Pro tip - avoid dairy for 2 days prior to donating to help ensure your iron levels are good. They are open 7 days a week. You can donate whole blood and platelets (not sure if they are still doing plasma and double red cell). Did you know only 2% of the population donates blood? Did you know one donation helps 3 people? Did you know when you donate, you get a free wellness check (bp, iron count, cholesterol - if you donate), usually some type of gift (shirt, blanket, cups, etc), and usually a $20 gift card voucher to pick a place of your choice. Have you made your appt yet? What are you waiting for? They are currently running a challenge that if you donate more consistently in a certain time frame, you actually get more money with each visit. Anyhow back to the location at hand. Their drink fridge is always full and snack tray is usually fully stocked with a variety of yummy snacks. They have a couple tvs usually showing random stuff without volume and music on one playing so keep that in mind if you want to bring a book or something to pass the time. Yes, it is there to comfort those in need after a hurricane or natural disaster, but did you know that helping people after a fire in their home is the Red Cross' biggest job? Working 24/7, they provide clothing, temporary shelter, meals, counseling, and monetary help for people like you and me - when we least expect it. In addition to that, there is the ongoing effort to educate people in health and safety, first aid, CPR, swimming and HIV/AIDS. And that is just what they do for Miami/Dade and Monroe Counties. The national and international activities are simply amazing. There is always a need for volunteers and contributions. Stop all the talk about giving back to the community and take action. Recently I accompanied a friend to go to OneBlood to donate his blood. When we got there, the place…read morehad just opened for the day, and a nice lady with dark long hair and glasses greeted us. She told my friend to sign in and wait while they get set up. Another lady, who only spoke Spanish, told my friend to go in one of the little offices. In there, she asked my friend questions about his personal information. Then his old record from The Red Cross popped up showing that the last time he donated was almost 20 years ago. Wow! We did not know that OneBlood's systems are connected with Red Cross' database. After gathering and verifying his information, she told him to go to one of the beds at the back and help himself to juices and snacks. There, a young lady started setting up for the blood donation. Earlier, I had spoken to the first lady sharing my friend's last blood donation experience that the employee had done a horrible job. She assured us that the staff is professional and well experienced. However, when the young lady inserted the needle into my friend's arm, she had trouble and I saw his face in pain. I looked around to see if the first lady was around. Then the young lady called for her assistance. She came over, adjusted the needle/tubes and then we saw blood starting to flow. She got a blue Gatorade for my friend to drink since it's recommended to hydrate while donating blood. And then she proceeded with putting an ice pack behind my friend's upper back area to stay cool. Note: Ask for the first lady to get your blood donation done because she knew what she was doing. I never got her name but she was really nice and friendly, spoke really good English and Spanish. She gave us free shirts and offered us snacks afterwards. The Yelp page states By Appointments only, but that isn't necessary. We walked in and the staff was able to help us right away.

Laid down on a comfy chair and the phlebotomist was gentle and took about 15 minutes to donated a pound of whole blood. They provided a free long sleeve OneBlood shirt with cookies and fruit juice. They have a casserole program, they collect toiletry items, dental items, shoes, etc. Living downtown, I see the extent of our homeless population daily. I wanted to help, and they made it easy.
