Sorry, Coach! Since my last review B2B has actually moved locations. The downside, for me, is that it's a further commute which often winds up translating into me being late for class. But there are far more upsides. The new space, while similar in size, is much cheerier, with bright white walls and sunlight filtering in. It also has AC, which not only makes a more comfortable gym environment, also allows for class to keep schedule even in these hellacious 110-degree months. Harold has added a lot of additional equipment over time, including double-end bags, speed-bags that size down as small as a grapefruit, and some bane-of-my-existance ab wheels. And I still love coming here. From mitt-work to footwork, weight lifting to interval training, heavy-bag speed drills to track, it seems like we've done it all. But as soon as I start thinking that, Harold introduces something new and challenging and interesting. And it's effective. I've dropped weight, gained muscle, and really seen myself grow. In a recent push-up challenge to failure, I completed 81! Eighty-one push-ups, ya'll. From not being able to do a single chin-up, I can now knock out 3. Harold's been a big component of helping me reach my potential, but also to keep looking beyond that and strive for more. If you're looking for a truly unique workout in an intimate environment where you're sure to benefit from a personal approach to workouts, from an instructor who meets you where you are fitness-wise, do yourself a favor and check out a class here. A few quirks: no music & no mirrors (so no distractions; though sometimes I wonder about my form without being able to see it). Also no water cooler, so remember to pack a big bottle because you WILL sweat.

We checked out several of the downtown/central Durham gyms and none of them were quite what we were looking for. CrossFit was probably the closest but it's much more expensive. When we stopped in at Danny Daniels Fitness Studio we found the owner to be disinterested. The YMCA seemed very crowded. There were other gyms further away and many of those seem to change owners every year. What I like about this boxing gym is that you get to learn technique and you also get a great workout. Nearly every muscle in your body gets exercised. The warmup and cool-down routines usually incorporate exercises such as squats, push-ups, pull-ups, jump rope, etc. The main boxing routine usually includes different combos on a heavy bag. Some of the drills are more focused on speed and others strength. Since this gym is new, classes are generally small -- which I really appreciate. Right now we do just boxing but Harold plans to begin offering kickboxing routines as well. As for the facilities, they have 6 heavy bags and various equipment such as pull-up bar, jump rope, and dumb bells. There is no A/C but this has not been bothering me (think of it as Bikram boxing). I've been working out in the evenings when the outside temperature has reached the 90s. The fans do a nice job of keeping the air circulating.

Off the bat, I came here specifically for Muay Thai, so can't comment on the others…read more So, I'm kind of having a hard time with this review. They are super, super nice people... but it's just not quite there. I've been to a bunch of better and worse Muay Thai gyms, and this place falls somewhere in the bottom. 1. Quality. This is really the biggest issue; nobody there is really qualified to teach Muay Thai. One of the trainers is a (lovely!) kid of 17 or 18 who just does not have enough experience, and the other is an older man who just has no muay thai skills. I never did see any of the trainers listed on their website teach anything. I know this is the East Coast and not the most metropolitan area, but even basics are not really there. There are no drills and pretty much no technical work. Lots of long combinations that don't always make sense, and not strenuous enough to count as a workout. Even worse, what's going on is frequently quite unsafe. There is a lot of training without proper gear (shin guards, hand wraps etc) and way too much hard sparing for people's level of ability. We all get it, it's martial arts, but what it should not be is people walking out of there with bruises everywhere because they've been whaling on each other or doing kicks without pads. 2. Rates. These are pretty high for what you get, and come with a 2x a week maximum. Once you're there you can take more than one class, but it still sucks that you basically have to pack all workouts into two days rather than being able to come when you want to. So you basically need another gym to work out at. 3. Scheduling and space. The classes are all at 6 and 7pm, which, for someone who works, is just really tough. Which means that unless you're actively in a class, as above, you need another gym. 4. Facilities. This might be a personal gripe, but it stops it from being a 'real' gym in my eyes - there are no showers. This means that there is no way to go work out, and then do anything else outside of go home and shower. Also... this is picky, but their heavy bags are not filled correctly and thus provide very little resistance and are too soft, and I remember someone saying about one of the bags that it had 'something hard inside' which, again, is quite unsafe, and kind of makes me wonder if they even know what it's filled with...? So... in summary. I can't really recommend it. It just doesn't feel like a safe space that's conducive to either learning or working out.

When i say i got a full body workout, i got a full body work. First off i would like to give a huge…read moreshout out to the crew for doing a great and walking around checking on people and making sure we were in the right stance when punch the bag. The class lasted 30 mins but within that 30mins the class did a stretch/ warm up exercise, punching exercise and a work cool down sessions. What i really liked was in between punching the bag, the staff would go up to different people and basically give them a break from the punching bag and have us punch the hand mitts to basically have a better form of aiming when swinging at a target hahaha. This was definitely an amazing experience and a great way to work out and I'm glad that me and my friend Mathew was about to come out and experience it. They are essentially high interval training with 3 minute rounds of boxing with a minute of either rest or low intensity between. Also a focus on core so and some strength so it isn't just cardio. The studio is very high energy with a lot of hip hop music and motivating coaches. Excellent for getting out any pent up aggression--(plus you feel like a b*d*ss after!) I love group exercise in general and they have good variety so while there is a lot of repetition, you don't notice it. They have a lot of classes throughout the day so fits almost any schedule. First class free! It is a lot smaller than the Cary gym tho so don't be expecting the same if you've been there!

When I was able to make classes led by Andrew I didn't have any issues. I informed any trainer ahead of time that I'm not sandbagging I'm pacing myself because while I was cleared to exercise, sprinting and jumping were not recommended. What do you think happened? If you guessed, the trainer kept coming over to "motivate" me, congrats! I finally had to explicitly say leave me alone in those exact words. The other issue is that there were never any morning classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I was never given a clear reason other than the lack of demand which wasn't true. The most egregious was the condition of the bags. You're supposed to take them down weekly and roll them to prevent the filling from settling on the bottom. When that happens the bottom is extremely hard like hitting a column and the top is just air. The bag won't move like it's supposed to and you'll hurt your hands. I don't know how that kind of oversight happens, especially with it being a franchise.

I have been going here since October 2022 and I already feel an overwhelming sense of community. The programming here is somewhat like a crossfit gym but I find it even better! I have been doing crossfit for 3 years now and I honestly think CFD's programming has pushed me further than those 3 years did. They focus on a lot of strength with good form instead of "just go as heavy as you can" like in CF gyms. I also feel like the workouts are NOT a competition like at crossfit gyms. Most programming is not "for time", it is just about moving well for a preset time or amount of sets. The demographic at this gym ranges from young to older as well as beginners to experts in fitness. CFD welcomes all walks of life! The coaches help you adjust all exercises to meet your level of fitness. Something special about this gym is that they really take the time to get to know you and your movement style. When you start here they complete a fitness assessment which basically looks at your mobility and balance in strength between your left/right and upper/lower body. It is a very helpful tool to help identify strengths and deficits for each individual. I highly recommend joining this gym. It's in a great location and the staff are incomparable. Courage Fitness was my first experience with CrossFit and like many people I was a bit nervous…read more about it, having heard about how intense the CrossFit community can be. Let me assure you that Courage Fitness is an extremely welcoming and supportive place to be, no matter whether you're just starting your fitness journey or are in fighting shape already. The coaches do a marvelous job of accommodating different levels of fitness and modifications for any injuries. I'm not sure how they're running things during Covid (I moved in July and had to end my membership) but previously they had two major categories of classes, the "Hustle" class which is a good starting point and is an intense "boot camp" style class, all body weights/dumbells/kettle bells. There's also the classic "CrossFit" style class scheme, with weightlifting and all that. If you've never done any weightlifting, don't worry, they'll set you up with a personal trainer (included in the starting package) who will coach you on basic form for all the requisite exercises and the coaches do a great job of helping coach you on your form during workouts. It's also a fantastic community. My first few workouts I had a hard time at points because the trainers had me laughing so hard. Yes, it a touch on the expensive side relative to a basic gym membership, but you're getting a planned set of workouts and a high level of personal attention.
