The Sweat Lab is awesome! You will dance, you will drop it low, you will shake it, you will flex it and most of all you will SWEAT! The instructors are not only fun and spirited, they push you to keep going whether your cycling, holding a plank or doing repetitive arms. Even after coming to new hope commons for years I am only just finding this hole in the wall! I did the Sculpt class with Bridget and boy was it tough. It was a full body work out in 50 mins and I think it was pretty fast paced but got in some burns. I think my preference would be slower paced work outs but the choreography was interesting and made sense for a full body session! The place is a little hard to find but thankfully I followed others who were in fitness clothes and made my way upstairs ok. The studio used was clean and I loved that all of our supplies were set out with a mat all ready to go. I do wish the classes orientation (the room itself) wasn't so narrow and long as it was hard to see the instructors movements around other people but she did her best to go on each side of the room for the exercises and did them all with us which was also nice. Can't speak on price since I found this place through class pass but I do think if you are looking for a hard, fast paced, heart rate up, and well rounded class this one was a good one read more

Have taken two spin classes now and have enjoyed both of them so far. The studio is tucked away in the same building as Sister Liu's on the 2nd floor and consists of a changing area, cycling room and then another room for barre/yoga classes. Cycling shoes are free and they provide towels as well. The first class I took was with Chris and while it was good, it was a bit of an adjustment on my first class figuring out the bike and the resistance knob/lever. Also I'm not sure if it was where I was in the room in the back corner but I could barely understand his instructions through the mic so it was a little hard to follow. Again not sure if I was just trying to figure things out. The second class with Amanda was great and I enjoyed it a lot more now that I was a little more comfortable/didn't have any issues. She was a great instructor and the flow of the class was a lot better I thought. Either way, both classes were a great workout and it's a great change of pace when the weather is crappy and I can't get on my bike outdoors. Also really appreciate that they require proof of vaccination and masks for classes. read more

HOOOOOOOOLY SHIT, I loved going to The Sweat Lab's cycling class!!! Having started with SoulCycle, then gradually moving to Harness Cycle when I relocated to Cleveland, I had fairly high expectations for The Sweat Lab. My nonnegotiables when I take any spinning class include a high-energy spin instructor and killer music. Hands down, my cycling class with Meghan fit both those requirements! Her theme ride - Childish Gambino vs. Beyonce - made me want to jump out of my seat and start dancing. She didn't add a lot of choreo, which I like, but rather focused more on sprint work and hill climbs. Her arm weight routine halfway during her class was also very straightforward. As a more experienced indoor spin cyclist, I had no problems figuring out how to set up my own bike or choose my own weights. That being said, if you're new to spinning or to The Sweat Lab, I would highly recommend coming in early, so one of the staff members can assist in adjusting your bike. (From personal experience, having a poorly adjusted bike can make or break your cycling experience.) Also bring your own water. Otherwise, towels are provided at each bike. Overall, I would bring all my friends to The Sweat Lab if I could. In the meantime, I'll be back at Harness Cycle while I'm still living in Cleveland. read more

So why would I, a student on a budget with access to an unlimited number of free fitness classes at the Duke gym, pay for classes here? 1. You can reserve your classes online, so you always know if there's a spot for you; 2. You can select and reserve your bike ahead of time, so you can always pick your favorite bike and don't need to rush to class way ahead of time just to pick the bike; 3. At the end of the cycling classes, they hand out cold scented towels that make all the sweat worth it. 4. The Duke gym has times when it's closed for break or undergoing renovations. 5. There's ALWAYS easy parking available here. Cons: - Docking off a star for the not-strong-enough air conditioning or not enough fans in the cycle room; - The prices, while comparable with other fitness places, are still pricey, especially for students - If you're late to a class, you have to pay... which means that if you don't get out of work until sometime in the evening, there's the rush hour 15-501 traffic that will constantly stress you out when you worry about not making it there on time; - There aren't many classes that start after the work day ends, making it troublesome if you're a med student that doesn't always get let out of clinic or the hospital at 5pm; The quality of the class depends on the instructor. Pick the ones whose styles you like the most. Chris's cycling classes are pretty much DJ'ed parties on bikes... totally worth it, and I'm almost considering paying for classes beyond my 5 intro ones just to take his classes. Elise and Alicia have amazing barre classes. I haven't tried the yoga or pilates yet. read more

I was excited to try Ride Cycle with my friend. However, I had trouble finding the entrance upon arrival. The front desk employee immediately asked my name upon arrival and said he could not let me in. After a confusing conversation for about 30 seconds, I looked down at my watch to see that it said 4:31 (the class had started at 4:30). As a new client I was appalled. The front desk employee was not helpful (and extremely rude) and could not process me a refund or tell me any further details about why I couldn't be let in. In the 30 seconds he was rudely telling me I couldn't of been let in, I could have already been on a bike. I am a frequent spin enthusiast and do not need any assistance on setting up. Meanwhile, my friend had texted me and said she had literally just walked in the studio a minute before. I may have been a potential new loyal client. Instead, I will be telling all my friends and family to not go. Not a great business model for attracting new customers. I talked to a manager who refunded me after I had to get her number from the rude front desk employee. However, she claimed that the directions for the studio were on the website (not helpful, as I was in the immediate area, the entrance is just hard to find, especially for a new customer). I was a little surprised she was not more sympathetic. I have been to many different spinning studios in NYC and throughout the country and have never been treated this way, especially as a new customer. What happens if one day you get stuck in traffic and are 10 seconds late? The front desk will rudely tell you to go home. Not the way most people want to be treated for a mediocre spin class that isn't even full. Even a 5 minute policy (see the wildly successful Orange Theory Fitness) is much more reasonable. read more

The Sweat Lab (previously Ride Cycle Studio) is a fun place to take a variety of classes! Barre, cycle, yoga and combination classes (bike + sculpt, cardio barre, etc). I've not been disappointed by any of the instructors' classes that I've taken. I do have my favorites of course and recommend going to one of their classes, especially if it's your first time - Elise or Trina for a barre class and Chris, Anthony, or Jessica (she's new to the studio and SO good!) for a cycle class. You will not be disappointed!! There's one major downfall for me, but I understand the reason, and so I'm not deducting a point for this. Unfortunately you lose a class credit or charged a class fee if you cancel less than 12 hrs before class begins. With my job as a NP, I don't always know whether I can make it in time for the class. So I've not signed up for a class, and then when I figure out I can go, the class is full. Or I'm definitely sure I'm going to be able to go, so I sign up ahead and then 4 hrs before class starts I realize I'll never make it in time and need to cancel. Again, I understand why they do this though. You've got to give the place a try!! read more

But it's the only spot in the CH/Durham area that offers intense cycle classes (I am sooo over the dance-spin classes at other studios). Well, the owner (maybe), either way, the dude who works there comes off as smug and condescending, not friendly whatsoever, so not sure why he chooses to help out with the front desk. Literally any of the women are far better at customer service. Additionally, I've been to cycle classes and boutique group fitness gyms all over the triangle - this is the first one that I've thought to myself, "wow so not worth the ridiculous prices." No offense to the instructors, but the cycle classes were mediocre at best - like I've literally taken a better class at a cheap globo gym. I predict that if another boutique style group fitness gym opens up anywhere near by, then Sweat Lab will more than likely just go out of business, personally I hope this happens so I can take a decent cycle class near me. do better. read more

I love this place. Finally, a great spin studio in the Chapel Hill/Durham area! For the past 3 years, I've been coming here when I'm home for the holidays. Yes, the location is a bit random, but there is always parking available. They make such great use of the space they have. There are 2 main rooms - 1 for spin and 1 for the other classes. They have changing rooms and bathrooms (with showers), both of which are very nice. Once you enter, there are cubbies and hooks for you to store your belongings (located right by the front desk, so you know your stuff will be safe). I love that this place offers combo classes and themed rides. Bike to Barre (half cycle, half barre) is probably their most popular combo class and it's such an incredible work out. They will also bring in live DJs for some of their spin classes. Which reminds me of another quality I love about these classes: the music is awesome. As for their spin style, I think it's a great balance between embracing the new wave of dance-like moves, while remaining at the core of traditional spin. I'm personally not a big fan of the contraindicated moves in spin (ie: push ups on the bike, dancing out of the saddle), and there is a bit of that in these spin classes, but I like that there's a balance. Yes, you will be doing push ups and things that "traditional" spin classes don't typically do, but it's only occasionally (and it's a fun change of pace and distraction). There is definitely not a lot of out of the saddle move your legs crazy stuff that other "new wave" spin studios do, which is good because those moves are bad for your knees! read more

I've attended several spin classes at Ride Cycle Studio and always leave satisfied with my workout, given the high energy instructors and music. However, the studio space and equipment aren't as nice as Flywheel, which is roughly the same price per class. But, if you're looking for a great spin class in Durham and don't want to trek all the way out to Raleigh, Ride Cycle Studio is a great option. The bikes themselves are high quality, but what I miss is the ability to track my workout metrics and to see the variance in resistance level and RPMs. This isn't a huge issue, if you attend a couple classes you'll have a good sense for how hard to push yourself, but it is a nice feature that other cycle studios have. I haven't tried the Bike to Barre or Yoga classes at Ride yet, but it is nice to have a variety of classes to choose from. read more

I bought the "first 2 for 1" package here as a new client and after these two visits I will not be back. On my first visit, the instructor, Elise, felt that it was appropriate to adjust the resistance on my friend's bike. This is wrong for many reasons that shouldn't need to be explained and goes against the studio's own approach posted on their website - https://www.ridecyclestudios.com/cycle/. As a studio that is tremendously difficult to find for a new client, it has a horrible late policy that does not allow anyone into a class if they are even 30 seconds late. Fortunately for Ride Cycle, there isn't much competition in the area so if you are in dire need of a workout it should be sufficient. read more

I also really like the barre classes. They give scented cold towels at the end of spin class & it is always so refreshing! Tried a Ride On class in this studio for the first time. The instructor was great and the music fun and upbeat - no complaints there. What they should mention in their class descriptions, however, is that their studio has no air conditioning - or at least that's how it seemed since the entire studio was balmy. This basically turned the spinning class into a VERY hot spinning class. It also took a place in a small enclosed room that only intensified the heat and unless you were seated right next to the couple of small fans, they did nothing to make the room cooler. I'm all for hot yoga since movements are slow. Hot spinning, however, is just miserable. I work out all the time and I had trouble breathing and almost walked out several times. I also don't think I got that great of a workout since I couldn't push as hard as I normally do - you get a fake sense that you're working out hard but it's just sweat from the heat. read more

RIDE is a fantastic addition to the Triangle Fitness community! We recently used our "first ride free" as well as the 2 weeks for $32 newcomer's special (actually, we only used a week of that, because Christmas is for gluttony not fitness, obviously). The studio is pretty new (there haven't been a ton of people when we went) but it's one of those local businesses where it's worth being an early adopter. Since there aren't any reviews yet, I'll go for the super detailed review. Actually, who are we kidding. I love super detailed reviews. First, some general things, then a review of the specific classes we tried. -It's located by Pomegranate Kitchen, sort of near the Bicycle Chain. Don't put it in the GPS, it will be wrong! My iPhone put me on 40. Just call if you have trouble, but basically enter like you are going to Office Max or whatever that store is. -They have both SPD and Keo Look compatible bikes, and all the SPD bikes have shoe cages for regular sneakers. There are only 4 Look bikes -the majority are SPD. -Both the cycle room and yoga room are beautiful. Definitely a much better vibe than taking classes at the local gym. Seriously beautiful. I love the vibe of the place - that fitness doesn't have to be stuff or laminate, that it can be hip and fun. RIDE's atmosphere makes it seem like a great place to go for a fitness date pre-drinks with a sigfig or a friend. -They have a shower (repeat). They have a shower. This makes morning classes fantastic. There is only one shower/bathroom combo, so if there is a class after yours, you should politely wait until they start to use the shower, since you'll be taking up the only bathroom. -It is very clear that Elise and Chris (the owners) are super passionate about their business. We had great chats with both of them when we took classes, and you can definitely feel the influence of their past experience in fitness (Elise's barre teaching experience, discussed below). Now a recap on the specific classes we tried: Ride On with Chris: Fantastic class. The "ride on" classes have about 48 minutes of cycle with 12 minutes of strength training / mat work. Chris played great music that covered a pretty wide genre and spanned multiple decades. His mat work was strength focused (there were a lot of push ups). I love the model RIDE has adopted of fitting cardio+strength into the same workout. Ride On with Elise: Also fantastic, my favorite so far. We took her class at 7am, and her energy and enthusiasm was contagious. Elise teaches a great spin portion (she puts together a really well balanced class and is really comfortable with the mic set). Her mat portion has a lot of Pilates/barre influence, which sucked in that way that all awesome things suck: it was hard but good for me. Ride OM with Rhian: 30 minute ride + 45 minute yoga. A great, tough 30 minute cycling class followed by 45 minutes of yoga. Rhian is a great teacher (you can definitely feel her David Swenson training in her style). Honestly I was so exhausted from the ride portion that I can't really comment on the music, but that's a good thing. Other classes to check out: Bike to Barre: similar to Ride OM, but with a Barre class. Great for people that are into that style (Pure Barre) The honestly *only* negative thing I have to say is that as a pretty new business, their schedule is somewhat limited still. They only have one class each on Saturday / Sunday, and about 4 classes during weekdays. I think this will definitely fill out more as they get more clients. THE QUICK AND DIRTY RECAP: Great new cycle studio. Definitely worth trying the 2 week pass at the least, but I encourage you to add it to your New Years Resolution fitness investment. read more

Ride Cycle has become my favorite yoga and cycle place! I'm more of a yogi, but Elise's cycle/barre class is amazing, and I'm now addicted! I used to go to cycle classes and stare at the clock, not at Ride. The music is upbeat, and Elise keeps you motivated to keep pedaling. She also understands that I'm a beginner and encourages me to go at my own pace, which I love. Also, try Christine's yoga class! I have followed Christine (I'm a stalker, ha) around the Triangle because her yoga class is absolutely amazing. Challenging, blissful and making you want to come back for more. Her playlist is always wonderful! After classes (barre and yoga) they provide yummy, cold washcloths that have been soaked in essential oils. It's so relaxing to lay it over my eyes in Savasana, or wipe off my face for a pick me up. Go check out this place, I promise you will fall in love with the space and the people. I have been taking on-line classes from The Sweat Lab for about six months. There is nice variety in the class offerings, the instructors are fun + encouraging + motivating and music is chosen well, plus the staff are extremely responsive and accommodating. I rented a bike for a time and they made it incredibly easy. I want to give a special shout out to Chris. He's given me some very thoughtful advice on how to approach and adjust my workout regimen, stay motivated and keep up my momentum to achieve my goals, all in an encouraging and compassionate way. I will look forward to doing live classes in the studio, which offers greater variety, but am very satisfied with the on-line alternative. I started going to Ride Cycle a little over a year ago and I have been extremely impressed with the improvements that they have made. Their location is convenient right off of 15-501 although navigating and finding the studio can be tricky-- they are located next to the former Straw Valley Cafe and then once you are at the building you have to go up the stairs. The space has a really cool chic loft kind of feel. They have greatly improved the signage both from the highway (no more tape on the windows) and at the building. They also recently redid the lobby and it is much nicer. They also have a technologically advanced check-in process with two iPads. You can tell that they are constantly making improvements. The studio itself has two sides: a barre/yoga studio on the left and the cycle studio on the right. I am not a spin aficionado so I can't comment on the spin classes, however, they do have some pretty neat theme rides (I almost considered giving up my aversion to spinning for their broadway ride. As far as the other classes here are some of my favorites: Cario barre with Carolyn- this is one of my favorite barre classes I have tried. Sometimes I don't feel like I got a great workout with barre because I don't break a sweat-- not in this class! You will be moving and sweating in no time! I love the mix of smaller movements and larger movements to get your heart rate up. Reshape barre with Elise- Reshape is very similar in format to Pure Barre (warm-up, arms, thighs, seat, abs), however, Elise does a good job to mix things up and offer lots of modifications (she is one of the owners). Yoga Fusion with Christine or Lauren- Yoga with weights and it is killer! You will definitely feel it the next day! Ride Cycle has a great concept and I really like the wide variety of classes that are offered and all of the teachers have been great. Their prices are also more affordable to comparative boutique studios like Flywheel (and they usually have a Groupon or Living Social deal going)l and I like that unlike large chain studios, they make an effort to be "local" incorporating the Durham bull into much of their advertising and supporting local fitness events like the Bull City Racefest. With a new client special of 3 classes for $18, you have no reason not to try them out! read more

I keep coming back here because of the Yoga Fusion class taught by Christine Wall on Mondays and it's close to work also. It's a good combination of yoga and pilates with weights. It's a very tough 75 minute workout. Also I like the bike and barre combo class offered.The studio has the bike studio (hence the name) across the hall from the yoga studio, so you may hear the music overlapping with the yoga music when 2 classes are going at the same time, which doesn't really bother me. The check in process is pretty fast because they use an iPad for self-check in. Definitely part of my workout rotation! read more

I'm not submitting this review for the benefit of Ride because I have first hand evidence that they don't take criticism seriously. Though I'm sure one of you will enjoy reading it aloud to the room for giggles. I'm writing this review so that people researching this studio know that the staff will make fun of you if they disagree with the feedback they actively solicit. So, the proprietors sent out a presumably anonymous survey and I filled it out. It took me maybe 3 minutes. I said I was concerned about some of the contraindicated moves taught by instructors -- moves that according to biomechanics may result in injury. These include tap backs, isolations, using weights while on the bike, and performing "push ups" on the bike (which are essentially useless because you don't get the full benefit of an upper body workout by just bending your arms against the handlebars). And this just isn't my opinion. This is the opinion of those who certify spinning instructors around the country through national accreditation programs that require regular re-certification. No clue what kind of certification or training programs the instructors when through because there's no mention of it in their bios on their website. So yeah, I disagree with many of the moves they teach. But money's money, and I'm not usually one to waste it. I went back for a class at Ride because I hadn't exhausted my groupon pack quite yet. I had been mostly ignoring the instructors when they led the class into contraindicated moves. But this time I had left my spinning shoes behind after class and realized it as soon as I pulled out of the parking lot. It wasn't intentional. I had forgotten my shoes after a class on Monday too. As I headed back upstairs to retrieve my spinning shoes, I heard the girl behind the front desk reading back my words in the snottiest tone ever. There were maybe four staff members in the room, and they were all laughing. Then the owner said she felt sorry for me because I took the time to write "all that." It was a brief paragraph. It took me longer to pull back into the parking lot, go up the stairs, and grab my shoes than it did to write the survey response. Anyway, I didn't linger, because I'm not particularly fond of confrontation. And I assure you I wasn't lurking. They continued to badmouth my feedback in front of me. Maybe they knew I had written that feedback and kept on talking in order to make me feel bad. It didn't work. I had legitimate concerns in my feedback they should consider looking into, but I guess a lot of spinning -- or should I say indoor cycling, because spinning requires accreditation and training that would teach them this -- instructors hear "contraindications" and roll their eyes. They don't care if their clients screw up their knees or experience lower back pain, I guess. If they were being professional, they would have swiftly changed topics upon seeing a client walk back in, but that's not what happened. I have 3 free classes I won at a raffle, but I really don't feel comfortable going back knowing how they talk about their clients after the room clears out. Sorry you didn't like my feedback. So, if you're thinking about attending a class here and you like soulcycle style classes, maybe you'll like this. I personally I prefer classes that are more rooted in biomechanics and physiology. I lost 60 lbs in a year taking those classes. The barre classes are pretty good. The yin yoga is nice and provided a much needed stretch. But if you try out one of their cycling classes and decide you don't like Ride? Don't bother offering feedback. In addition to sending out surveys, they also have a table where they solicit feedback too -- but they clearly don't want it unless you're just blowing smoke up their butts. PS: As to other reviewers who liken the temperature of the cycling room to hot yoga -- that was my impression after the first class too. It's unpleasant if you choose a bike near the fake candles. The diagrams indicate there's a fan nearby but it's a floor fan. What use is a floor fan when you're up on a bike? None at all. There are various spots in the class that don't feel like a sauna.
