3.5 stars because Onion Creek has the vibe down perfectly, but the experience didn't fully meet my expectations this time around. The patio is still one of the best spots in the Heights for people watching, casual drinks, and soaking in a laid back Houston evening or trivia night. Top tier trivia is that's your thing. The space feels artsy, eclectic, and very "Heights-core" in the best way. That said, the service inside was good as usual but a little slow considering it wasn't overly busy. I came for their weekly steak night and it just wasn't giving. My medium well steak came out very obviously medium rare! I heard another table joking about how many customers took their steak back to the grill as I walked past them with my plate. Yes, the cooks happily put it back on the grill but I had to stand there and wait for it to cook while my friend sat alone at our table. My baked potato was cold when I got back. The 3 guys cooking the steak looked so unmotivated. They should take more pride in the food they serve and the servers need to check back on their tables and make sure people are happy with their food. I shouldn't have to run my steak back. Can't believe them! their website says brunch on Friday's. I arrived before 14:00, the reciept shows this. But they charged me full prices, I showed them their the page on their website that shows brunch every Friday. they refused to honor what their sites offers. It specifically says $25 for bottles of Prosecco for brunch. I ordered one and they charged me $30. I showed them their web site and they shrugged and said it was wrong. I showed them it was a reoccurring brunch menu on all Fridays and she became irritated and told me to leave. After a sun-filled bike ride from 3rd Ward to the Heights, all I could think of was grabbing the coolest drink and something filling to carry me on the ride back home. Onion Creek surely delivered with their Country A$$ Tea (a vodka-based Arnold Palmer that could've used a bit more vodka, but otherwise, was the perfect balance of tangy and sweet) and the Brisket Taco (cooked too perfection, but on the smaller side for $8). The bartender was super nice about offering me samples of brews and ciders to try (mango and strawberry) before I decided that I hadn't yet acquired the taste for this drink of choice. I loved the vibe. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor is a more wooden pub scene while outdoor is wooden tables and umbrellas. The outdoor seating was so nice in summer Houston weather. The string lights were beautiful when the sun was down, and there's the rustic wooden vibe. It seems perfect for a group or a date night. I got the fried chicken sandwich and it was delicious also! They have a lot of options of salads, sandwiches, apps and pizzas. The fries were perfect for sharing also! Good place to have a late night meal in the Heights. I think their kitchen goes until 11pm. This is one of the smaller "Creeks", but the food and counter service are consistent with the other locations. During the day, the trees provide shade and there also canopies for some of the tables. There are a couple of items on the menu for vegetarians and fish for the pescatarians but I usually get their margherita pizza. Pizza being a loose term since it actually is two slices of thick bread with cheese and tomato on top. Still works. I also had the fish tacos at one time which features mahi mahi and pineapple salsa. The tortillas were small pieces in a creamy mix of white queso and cotijo with the eggs. No jalapeños but it did have a soft kick to it. Parking is limited, but you can always get lucky with nearby street parking. There are plenty of seating both indoor and on the outdoor patios. Similar to the other "Creeks", order at the bar then grab a table, the waiters will bring your orders to you. This is probably my favorite out of the "creeks", compared to Cactus Cove, Canyon Creek, Cedar Creek which are all in the Heights area. Parking is mostly free street side parking on White Oak. Onion Creek has a cool outside area (with too many freaking flies and minimal shade though) and an interior seating option. The food is alright casual American food but slightly lackluster if you're looking for quality. Their burger buns are a bit dry and their chicken in the sandwich is also a bit dry and overcooked. The fries are just standard fries. Their nachos / chips and queso are decent. It's a good spot to hang out in a group setting and it's more about the hanging out than the actual food most of the time. Service is minimal, you order at the bar and food gets brought to you, and that's the end of the service portion. read more

It's finally cool enough so we took the pups to a new place (to the dogs) with a patio. Onion Creek has multiple pockets of shaded outdoor space, which is ideal for people dining out with dogs, so they don't get too close to start a barking match. Because of this, it was an stress-free experience for our pups and their humans. We ordered a regular burger and a beyond burger and both were well prepared, adequately seasoned, and quite substantial, especially with a choice of a side (fries, chips, side salad, or a small upcharge for other side items). I chose roasted cauliflower as my side and it was very tasty! The restaurant is counter-service but we were able to place our order and get our food in reasonable time, even on a Friday afternoon during happy hour (3-7pm weekdays, all day on Mondays). With a quite extensive menu, Onion Creek has a lot to offer, and we'll definitely return with the pups. read more

I was staying at a nearby Courtyard Marriott and wandered out looking for dinner. (Am not a fan of the hotel's in-house restaurant.) I found Onion Creek a couple of blocks away and ordered the Margherita pizza plus mushrooms. The "big ass" brownie looked good so I got that too. The pizza was made fresh so I waited as it cooked. It wasn't cold out, so I waited at an outdoor table. The pizza was great and the portion ample -- it lasted for more than just dinner. The brownie was disappointingly dry. I had a bad experience here 10 years ago, but gave it another shot and things seemed good for a few months. But now ..our group ordered four of the brisket burgers since I have had them several times and they have been amazinbg, but not today. All four of our burgers were loaded up with these 1 in square cubes of pure fat. When I say loaded, it was beyounf belief, like 80% of it was these solid cudes of fat. I spoke with the cook about it and he said he can't control the meat. I said well somebody had to cut the meat and put it on the burger didn't they? He had nothing to say, no apology no nothing. He did offer to refund our money so we did that and left to eat at another restaurant. Reminds me of one of those guys that takes things out on other people when he has a bad day. I'm guessing it was not a good day or not everybody are morning people due to my service not being so great. The food didn't take long! A friend and I met up for drinks Memorial Day Weekend and wanted to try a new place so we stopped into Onion Creek Cafe. We loved the casual outdoor patio seating and the friendliness of everyone at the bar. While there, we tried the frozen mango mimosa, the frozen bomb pop slush, a Deep Eddy Grapefruit w/ club Soda, a drink of the bartenders choice and a chocolate chip cookie. The frozen drinks were on happy hour so very reasonably priced but we didn't like any of the ones we tried. They seemed to be lacking in flavor and tasted mostly like ice. The drink made by the bartender was fun and tasty! I loved just telling the bartender what type of drink I was looking for and then knowing what to make. I have to admit though... the cookie was the best thing of the night! The cookie was soft and full of chocolate chunks... yum! The bartender i ordered with (not the one shown in the photos) was so much fun to chat with and very friendly! He made drinks quickly and kept the line moving. Been here many times and a beloved staple of the White Oaks area. It's become our brunch spot for morning runs and special events like White Linen Night or group meetups. Good amount of seating on the outside patio and can definitely get busy at night or morning brunch times. (Parking can be limited for the area but Onion creek always has their own which is very appreciated) The service has always been pretty good, bartenders tend not to be chatty/friendly but are very efficient and I liked that. The runner's bowl I got this time was good but would like it more if the sausage wasn't burnt. In a foodie city like Houston there is often a lot of turnover on the restaurant scene, however, Onion Creek is not one of those places. I'm not sure when it opened, just that it's been here for quite some time, and for good reason. The bar/restaurant offers a great atmosphere both inside and out, with a super cute outdoor patio (with plenty of shade) as well as a comfortable eclectic ambiance indoors. The menu is superior to that of a typical bar food menu, with plenty of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The cheeseburgers I've had were all really tasty, and the fried chicken sandwich was good but a bit on the dry side. Honestly I think it would be improved with the buffalo sauce they offer but I forgot to ask for it. My husbands ranchero salad was substantial, with a very poblano forward flavor. For desserts we have tried the churros (which I got with a coffee and baileys) as well as the cheesecake. Both the desserts were just fine. I'm a bit of a cheesecake snob myself (I prefer dense and dry NY style cheesecake) so I probably won't order that particular dessert again for myself. With regards to service, our food and drink have always come out pretty quickly, so can't complain there. In my experience the bartenders taking orders are not a very chatty bunch and have not been particularly friendly. It's possible I've just caught them all on an off day, so will be happy to update this review in future if that changes. We definitely will be back! read more

Zero stars due to another dishonest encounter. I open a tab and when I go to close it I'm told they closed it and they refused to give me a receipt. Yes, refused to give me a receipt. I open my discover app to see what he charged me and I was overcharged by I'm thinking 50-75 dollars. I'm walking to my table as I'm looking at the phone and I ask my friend "what did we eat for 125 dollars?" It gets better. A beautiful woman calls me over and said "you shouldn't have a bill at all. I paid your bill because you two are celebrating a birthday." I'm shocked by her kindness and generosity. So who knows what the bartender charged her. I go back to the front and ask why I was charged 125 dollars for a couple of small meals and beer. I also let them know I knew someone paid my tab. They NEVER told me someone paid my tab. No one had a damn answer and stared at me. Some smirked. I had to ask for a manager. He watched in silence as the thief tried to figure out how to return my money. They did so without explanation, excuse, or we are sorry. Silence. I called corporate and they sent me over my receipt (which I was never given even after asking for it) which was forged with an incorrect name and the employee gave himself a generous 25 dollar tip. I told them it was forged. They were kind and apologetic and promised to follow up the next day. Weather was bad the next day so I gave it a good long time. I've waited for over a month to find out the outcome of the investigation they promised. Never heard back. My previous review details being charged I think 45 dollars for three drinks from the same bartender at brunch. When I asked at the time why I was being charged for 5 drinks instead of three the waitress said because they had double shots in them. So they padded my tab at brunch. I didn't order doubles. If I order 3 why list 5?? So twice I've been dealt with in an extremely dishonest manner. I'm assuming the old guy with the pony tail still works there.
