Gulf Shrimp Skillet

Hull & Oak (bar side) gave us a whole vibe for Saturday night. We decided to stay in because of the weather and traffic--and honestly, it was the right move. There was a live guitarist, cozy lounge seating, and beautiful views of downtown through the windows. The drinks were solid, and our bartender Brittany was excellent--attentive, friendly, and consistent. Food was good: The shrimp skillet was flavorful (my partner ordered it again) I had the smash burger--good, but definitely a lot of food (two patties caught me off guard) They did miss my request to leave off the spicy relish, though it didn't ruin the dish The biggest issue was the gnats/fruit flies in the lounge area. We had to constantly fan our food to keep them away, which was disappointing, especially for a hotel with such an upscale feel. Overall: Great vibe, strong service, good food--but definitely room for improvement on cleanliness and attention to detail.

Had an amazing brunch at Hull & Oak in Houston! The atmosphere was stylish, vibrant, and perfect for a laid-back brunch outing. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, with great flavors that really stood out. The service was friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. If you're in Houston and looking for a great brunch spot with good vibes and tasty food, Hull & Oak is definitely worth checking out!

My husband and I came here for brunch while we were visiting Houston. The place was super cute! Nanyamka was our server and she was so sweet and accommodating. She answered my questions and made a recommendation for us to get the biscuits and gravy, which is a staple breakfast for us. We really enjoyed it! I also got an oat chai latte which was solid--a bit on the sweet side, but I'd get it again. Would definitely come back here for a standard breakfast.

I dined here two days in a row. The food was all right, but the service was poor and it didn't look like a single person there wanted to be there. This is a captive restaurant, but you should at least nail it on either food or the service. I left my table as briefly as one could to wash my hands after ordering. It should've been obvious what was going on since I just ordered, but to be safe, I left my napkin over the back of my chair to more clearly communicate that I would return. When I returned 1 minute later, my place was cleared and, apparently, they also cleared my order since the waitress had no idea to which table it belonged when it was made. After adding a tip to the check and signing it, I noticed a tip had already been added. Why? I've had about 600 nights at Marriott properties, and have never had a tip auto-added for a party of one. Curiously, the second morning I dined, a tip wasn't automatically applied. As I left the restaurant, the host at the stand, who did not appear to be engaged with anyone or anything, successfully ignored me. The second morning the hostess sat me at a bench whose food debris hadn't been wiped from the last party. I wiped the food off with my hands (yuk). She saw but didn't seem to care. Very promptly after taking my order, she left me the check. I appreciate that so it doesn't waste my time at the end, so I promptly signed the check and placed it hanging over the other side of the table to clearly communicate that it was taken care of. It's remained there the entire meal. Even when my food was served, it was still left there. During my meal, another server brought me a tea pot, which I didn't order. She was uncertain if it belonged to me so she silently stared at me with the teapot. I think she was trying to communicate, "does this belong to you?" She should be using her words so I didn't say anything. presuming she would. After too awkward of a silence I said, "that's not my tea." She grunted (or muttered a single unintelligible syllable) and served it to another table. Not only does it seem like none of the staff received service training, but not a single team member did anything that most restaurants do to make someone feel welcome or want to return. As a platinum, I had a breakfast voucher for my third morning, but gave it to a friend as I went elsewhere for breakfast.

This place is located inside of the hotel on the 2nd floor. We made reservations but you don't really need to. It is very nice inside. We sat in a booth. Our server was very accommodating. For brunch I got the shrimp and grits which were delicious & filling. I also ordered a side of bacon. The mimosas are great too. I would say it is more on the expensive side of brunch, but totally worth it.

We stopped by Hull & Oak for breakfast after arriving early for a work trip, and it was a great start to the day. The menu looked fantastic and the food did not disappoint -- the Peaches & Cream Waffles were the perfect balance of sweet and savory. My coworkers also loved their meals. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The decor was also super nice and aesthetic. Highly recommend for a delicious breakfast if you're staying at The Laura Hotel.

Visited for a Valentines Day dinner and the food was nice. I loved the edition of the live musician singing love songs. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. We opted to sit within the bar area, which was an open space. The crab cake was good. My favorite cocktail was the Garden of Eden.

Sunday downtown Houston brunching with my fav!!!! I saw this place on TikTok and saved it in hopes I'd get the chance to go one day and today was the day. Reservations are recommended as the place is small. We were seated immediately and given a menu. The brunch menu was small but the choices were great. Our waitress was amazing and the atmosphere was very inviting. I'll definitely be back to try other dishes.

H&O is located inside The Laura Hotel. For the OG HTX Elites, this hotel used to be the Hotel Alessandra where we had a YEE years ago. You can enter from the street level or from the Greenstreet Complex on the 2nd floor. The restaurant is located on the second floor next to the reception area. When I walked up to the host stand, they asked me to go to the hotel bar area to order. The bar was pretty busy. The bar manager, Joe was bartending and he was doing his best to keep up with the drink orders. There were a few servers wandering around, but it appeared they were short staffed. Joe did apologize for the slow service which we appreciated. Drinks: Garden of Eden - I really enjoyed this cocktail because of the cucumber. It was very refreshing! Sip Pink - It was good, but sweeter than the Garden of Eden. Basil Leaf Us Hanging - My bff ordered this mocktail and she liked it. Food: Deviled Eggs - Spectacular! I loved the black truffles. The spicy peppers were a bit too hot, but the flavors complimented each other well. Brussels Sprouts - They had a nice char and were tasty. Seared Salmon Filet - This dish was good. It came with mashed potatoes and a Creole piperade. Collard Greens - Nice flavor and the portion was huge! We ordered two bowls because the server said the bowl was small, but one portion would have been plenty. Jambalaya Rice - My bff ordered this, but I didn't try any. On my second visit, we went straight to the hotel bar. Sandy was our server but other employees checked on us too. Drinks: Velvet Dream - This drink reminded me of a lavender flavored Clover Club. It was good. Basil Leaf us Hanging - My friend ordered this with mint instead of basil, however it looked different from the one that my bestie ordered. When I looked at the receipt, I noticed that it said Burning Bush instead of Basil Leaf Us Hanging. At any rate, my friend enjoyed her mocktail. Food: Deviled Eggs - I ordered them again because I loved them so much! My friend enjoyed them too. Truffle Fries - Delicious and not too crispy. I've added H&O to my downtown dining rotation. The food and beverages are good and it's near some of the venues that I frequent.

Even this time the GPS took us to an entrance that had us going the wrong way down a one-way, but we eventually figured it out I will say that the parking isn't all that great, but we were able to find a spot. If the parking lot is full you should be able to find street parking nearby Kanpai Club is a sister location to Handos. They share a kitchen and you can walk through an inside door access either. You can find the same cocktails and bites from Handos on the Kanpai menu, but there's also additional drinks and bites The bar feels like a Japanese Izakaya. It's a narrow space resembling a Japanese outdoor bar. It's intimately lit and well decorated. We did have to wait for two spots to open up, but that didn't take too long The bartenders were friendly, professional, and efficient. We went on a Friday night (fairly late), and they had two dedicated bartenders The cocktails were fun and were beautifully crafted. Most were served in novelty glassware. You can order classic cocktails, but both Kanpai and Hando offer a variety of signature cocktails. Most having some sort of Japanese or Asian fusion. They have beer, wine, and extensive sake list, as well as green tea and other nonalcoholic options The cocktails were tasty. The only one I was iffy on was their Espresso martini. It was poured from a machine and I guess there were having issues with it. The presentation was phenomenal. There was a roasted marshmallow garnish. The drink itself was far too Smokey in flavor than I like, or at least in terms of my espresso martinis The Yuzu Kosho fries were incredible. The flavors really hit the spot. The Okinawa Potato salad was both questionable to looks and and to eat lol. This purple mound of potato's had an interesting taste, look, and consistency. It wasn't bad, just... interesting and new Some tips: If you can't find this spot from the street, look for Handos. It's part of this restaurant Ask the bartender about the happy hour menu. And most nights they're open until 12am, but on Fridays and Saturdays they are open until 2am If you order food online (technically from Hando's) you can get 10% off using code: HANDO10. This is part of their "Hando and Chill" special Cheers!!

Midtown with their questionable parking makes me not want to go. Upon entering, the place is a nice, intimate setting, with a handful of seating areas along with bar and outside seating. Recommend bringing a light jacket as it was a bit cold. The menu had a variety of offerings, and noted that all drinks are $12. They are card only, so bring your card or tap to pay and also your ID. Because they are 3 feet from a school and are considered a private club, they comply with TABC regulations to ensure safety and efficiency in their business. From the variety of the drinks, I opted for my signature drink, an Old Fashioned, it definitely had a bite to it. I slowly sipped on it while I lounged in one of the seating areas. My sister tried the Starduster Ranch Water, and she didn't like it, I had a sip of it and it tasted like only way I can describe is like soap. Saw that they also have Mocktails and THC Beverages, I didn't try any of them. We headed out as we were trying to grab dinner and Starduster doesn't currently offer food. I did get to speak with Dylan again outside and he clued me in on a couple of things they are planning to do such as having food trucks and also open the upstairs for additional space. Overall, I know being new (had just opened last week) there are many things being worked on and do hope that things improve here and they add additional seating, it got busy for a bit and seating was standing only. Thankfully I was there early enough and got a nice cozy seating area. I removed a star because both my drink and my sister weren't really anything special, it tasted like they were premade and poured from a tap, I missed seeing each one be made. I did like that there aren't TV's inside, it helps maintain the personal interactions natural and focused. Outside they do have TV's which makes sense for bigger groups. Though the seating is limited inside, likely to maintain it as a cozy and intimate space, outside has a lot of seating AND they are PET FRIENDLY! In cold weather without heating lamps, don't think anyone would really sit out there. Once spring and summer arrive, it will be nice. On their menu they indicate "Weekly Specials" Spaghetti Western Sundays Monday Night Steak Night (not sure why it wasn't happening the day I was there, would've enjoyed some steak) Tarot Tuesdays Whiskey Wednesday
