She prints chowder labels for fake companies she has made up and you take the labels off of cans of Walmart chowder and replace them. They sell especially brilliant Lightfoot pine soap. The store as a whole is enjoyable. But the soap is special.

Bottom Line: Touristy stuff. I thought a store like this might have some really, upscale nice local art and gifts but most things just seemed really touristy and not necessarily very unique to Rhode Island. Even the displays weren't that inspiring or engaging. read more

Well everything sold in this store is made in Little Rhody. Unfortunately there isn't much made in the Ocean State anymore. Actually there's not much made in America anymore. So unfortunately the shelfs are a little barren. But that's not the fault of the store. It's the fault of the world we live in today. So I'm not going to knock it for that like the other Yelp jerks. It is what it is. Anyway, I was able to find and purchase a large bottle of Autocrat's Coffee Milk syrup. TAKE THAT, you tourist snobs (I'm looking at you Maryland)! It was a cute, nostalgic store that has mixings to make your own Del's lemonade, hot weiner sauce, Autocrat, etc.

This is a odd little shop in a strip mall near Thames street in Newport, I also understand there is a similar shop in the airport (now that should tell you something). It has all those things that are supposed to make an ex-pat R.I. type like me get all mushy about R.I. and it does have some of that stuff, but mostly its a bunch of touristy stuff you can find at cheaper locations in state. There is a lot of "art" here for those needing a photo of a lighthouse or a beach at sunset and most of that stuff is reasonably priced. Now having dissed all that, I ended up buying a T shirt, some N.Y.System hot dog meat sauce mix and some coffee mix. Yes, I am one of those ex-pat R.I. who loves to come home again. read more

A coffee-milk-loving girl followed this shop on Instagram and struck glass when she saw a link posted to this shop's website on its account--a glass saying "I [heart] Cawfee Milk." I love all things Rhode Island, and this shop [clearly] has them!! I live out-of-state, but really enjoyed the time I lived in Rhode Island and all the treats this state has, from coffee milk to Del's and johnnycakes. After seeing a special posted on the shop's Instagram account, I followed the link and shopped like I was in the Ocean State. They have a little of everything, with mixes and sauces as well as books and jewelry. You can even pick out massive baskets filled with different specialty items or create your own bag full of treats, depending on your favorites!! I ordered a coffee milk glass, a johnnycakes mix, and a buttermilk and honey pancakes mix. Three days--yes, three--later, I received it in the mail, treats packaged and protected well (especially the glass). Tucked in, too, was a handwritten note stating, "Enjoy!!" from the staff at Only in Rhode Island. What shop takes the time to write a note to accompany a package? Only in Rhode Island. (Thank you so much, Only in Rhode Island!!) While items are a bit higher in price here, you are supporting a small business [focused on showcasing a small state] and paying for quality and the real thing. I am unable to get to a number of Rhode Island haunts due to living in another state, so I paid a little more for quality and convenience, and I am excellent with it, especially after having a personalized handwritten note tucked in with my treats!! Definitely follow them on Instagram to see scenes of Rhode Island as well as specials they may be having. I plan on stopping in to the shop to see all of the items offered in person the next time I am in Newport. This will hopefully be soon, but I have my glass ready to make coffee milk in and my johnnycakes mix to make some deliciousness to hold me over until then. read more

I was looking for some gifts to send out-of-state, but, having just perused half a dozen other stores downtown, I realized that the prices here were higher than in several other stores. In other words you can buy the taffy, the Del's stuff, coffee milk, the jonnycake mix, the soaps, sauces, etc., for less money other places. And several of the food items can even be purchased at the local grocery stores. And I agree with the other reviewers who wrote that the clerks are not the most welcoming. In addition, you can find other made-in-Rhode-Island gifts all along Thames Street. There is Shore Soap Co., the tea store, the spice store, the store that sells nautical signal flag jewelry and Primavera also sells jewelry made by local artists. In other words, there are many choices for RI-made goods! read more

WOW! I am so floored by the treatment that I just received...is this the usual treatment that you get ONLY IN RHODE ISLAND? No one ever acknowledged me even though there were two clerks behind the "mysterious wall." When making my purchase, I was made to feel that I was an inconvenience and even when I asked for a separate bag, tissue paper and a price tag removal for a gift, my request was met with a sigh and a big show that what I was asking for was creating too much work for the clerk. My family and place of work have been regular customers, but I will now go out of my way to NOT come back to this store. read more

I visited this store today to purchase a hostess gift for a family I am staying with overseas this month. I had been in before, but only to browse briefly. No one greeted me when I entered, and I walked around for at least 20 minutes. No one asked if I needed any help, and there were 2 clerks in the store and maybe 1 or 2 other customers. I chose several products (almost 100 dollars worth of merchandise) and brought them to the register. The only words the clerk said to me was the total of my purchase and which receipt was mine. I was at the counter for several minutes while she bubble wrapped my purchases. Next time i won't wait until the last minute and definitely go somewhere else. Overpriced and rude service. read more

I am not sure what "Stacey B" is talking about because I visit the OIRI store frequently. Whether it's the height of the summer or the dead of winter I am always pleasantly greeted by the staff and have felt welcomed in this store. I make it a point purchase gifts for my relatives who have moved out of state and my gifts are always a big hit! I was down at the store this past weekend with an out of town guest and he absolutely loved this store. We both agree that OIRI has an incredible selection of fun local products that are reasonably priced. After purchasing our many items for gifts our "treasures" were handled with care by the staff and each item was wrapped individually for safe transporting (many of the other stores should take a page from this book). I will continue to shop at Only In Rhode Island this store cares about the local economy and the people that support it. read more
