Ono might be our new favorite restaurant on Kauai. We went early to dinner on Valentines Day and it didn't disappoint. The food was all freshly prepared and it has a very authentic menu. Things we Loved: 1. The entrees: We had tandoori shrimp and lamb vindaloo. Both were spiced just right and the staff delivered on our request for spice level (me mild, hubs medium). Both the shrimp and the lamb were fresh and tender. 2. The rice: We ordered the lemon rice. It was literally the best rice dish I've ever had anywhere. I can't even explain how exotic and amazing it was. 3. The service: This is a small family run place and you can tell how much care they put into not only the food but the service too. Things we didn't love: 1. The naan bread was crispy vs chewy. It's a personal preference but it still had good flavor. 2. The raita was watery so didn't serve well as a dip for the bread as it just ran off. Both of these things were very minor to us because the things we loved we really loved a lot. In terms of prices, they were a bit steep. But everything was very fresh AND the portions were very generous - enough to have a 2nd dinner from the leftovers the next evening. We loved this place and are already going back with some friends this weekend. read more

Visited this place during my visit to the island. We went there for dinner and ordered lemon rice, raita, kadahi chicken, dal makhni, cashew paneer, garlic naan, kulfi, and gulab jamun. Lemon rice was good. Raita was just water with a hint of curd. All the entrees were super spicy even though we ordered medium. They mentioned their medium means on the spicier side, but this was just too much. I honestly wonder who came up with that spice scale. Just call it what it is. Naan was good. Kulfi was okay. Gulab jamun tasted like the boxed kind, microwaved and handed to us. Service was fine, but overall the place was a disappointment. And it is RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE for this food. read more

Casual Indian cuisine. Everything is Ala carte so you have to order rice separately if you want it. Food is delicious and they serve good portions. You can choose your level of spice which is great for wimps like me. Unfortunately they got my husband's order wrong by giving him the wrong meat and not making his spicy like he wanted. But he said the flavor was good. The staff are friendly and you can sit inside or outside which is nice. read more

We really wanted to like this restaurant....I ordered the vegetable Vindaloo, medium heat. It arrived fairly quickly, and was (temperature) piping hot. Unfortunately, the dish was tasteless, bland, and incredibly spicy hot. The sauce tasted like it had been made with Campbell's tomato soup, and there was no indication that there were ANY Indian spices in it. Disappointing, to say the least. My wife ordered the Spinach Sag, which was also a huge bland disappointing dish. No Indian flavoring, and although she asked for medium heat (spicy), there was no indication of ANY heat in the dish. Coupled with the tasteless Nan, this was an overpriced and tasteless meal. read more

A great restaurant with quick and friendly service. Their samosas are always super tasty and nicely crusty. The Dahl Makhni and Malai Kofta are especially delicious. I think I've tried everything on the menu at this point and those items and the garlic naan are my favorite. read more

We've been back several times and tried many different dishes. Everything has been awesome. If you can handle a LOT of spice ask for "Indian Hot." They will ask you if you are sure...they even brought a little dish of hot sauce that was WAY TOO HOT, so of course we tried it on everything. Updated to add images of the printed menus, they are different from the online ones. The service is still a bit rough but the mai tais are very rum-forward, so that makes up for it. read more

2nd time at Ono was as amazing as the first. We went in late after realizing our propane was pau and they always greet us so warmly. Lemon rice and mango lassi for me are both a must. Our lamb plate was slightly dry in my partners opinion and I thought it had great flavor. I think the bar area could use a little TLC as it seems it's just a backpack storage. read more

Delicious authentic chole bhatura with perfect amount of spice. The bhatura was fried perfectly and not oily at all. We ordered "medium spicy" for the Chole and it was quite spicy, so be careful if you're sensitive to hot and spicy. Masala dosa and chole bhatura are not on the printed menu but were available YUM. Great fast service . Lovely outdoor patio. So happy to have found this place since most restaurants in Kauai have very limited vegetarian options. read more

We love Indian food but this was probably the worst we've ever had. The naan had no flavor and the other dishes were pretty gross. We got the papaya salad (DO NOT get this) and the eggplant dish left a lot to be desired. The rice was fine. read more

Dinner here tonight was good. The three stars are for the food - vegetable samosas, cucumber salad, coconut curry with fish (ono), rice, and garlic naan. It was all very tasty... the fish was a bit over cooked in the Curry, but still tasted great. The service gets no stars. We waited for quite some time to place our order, and when someone did come to our table, they just stood there until I said hello and that we were ready to order. When ordering, we said we wanted medium spice, but we're told that medium was hot... which made no sense. No one asked us how our food was. When we left, the person who waited on us was at the door and said nothing as we walked by. Go for the food, not the service. (And expect to wait.) Or maybe get takeout. read more

This Indian food was actually pretty dang good, and I've eaten at a variety of places by Little India in Artesia, CA. Like many Indian places I've been to, the service isn't the quick and heavily attentive kind you expect at Western restaurants. You have to flag down staff if you need something. The restaurant is open air with most of the seating on the covered patio. - Butter chicken, medium spice: 9.5/10 A true medium spicy by Indian terms. Expect a good kick. It had a nice bright flavor. The sauce is super great for dipping your breads or smothering your rice. - Garlic naan: 8/10 A go-to flatbread with great char. Plenty of garlic. Great for dipping or using as a scoop for your food. - Alu paratha: 7.5/10 A dense potato bread with mild spice. It's very filling on it's own. Very soft, so don't expect the crisp you get with naan. - Mango lassi: 8/10 Your standard Indian yogurt drink. Probably the bottled stuff. Great nonetheless. - Veggie pakora: 3.5/10 WAAAAY too salty. Great crisp. The sweet sauce cuts on the saltiness some, but it was still too much for us. - Basmati rice: 8/10 Fresh. Chopped cilantro/coriander over the top with seeds mixed in. A great pairing with any main dish. Everything was very good other than the pakora. We actually asked for another order of butter chicken to go because we had so much leftover rice, alu paratha, and garlic naan. Good portions for sharing. read more

Ono was the best Indian food I've eaten outside of the UK. Very flavourful. Perfect temperature. Food was offered with different spice levels mild, medium & hot. We went with the medium which was great. We love a mix of all the flavours so ordered a bunch to sample as much as we could. Server was quite rude here, not really willing to answer any questions about the menu. Food was overly spiced.

Slow and expensive, flavor is good. First time I went I had to pay $4 for rice to go with my dish, it said chicken on the menu but there was no chicken just cheese I think. The water crafts had lids that were visibly dirty. Today $10 for two samosa with two sauces that were good savory and sweet. The other samosa on the menu was a single with some toppings for $14 so I went with the two instead. The menu on the website says $9.95 for the two, with tax it was $10.42 they charged $11 something I questioned they said it was tax. They charged the wrong price and are not friendly or have any customer service, this place is part day care and part restaurant be aware before you go it will be expensive slow and not much parking. read more

If you're debating on coming here, don't debate it any longer and get here! The food was absolutely incredible!! The menu was so vast, and had many vegetarian options that I haven't seen at other Indian restaurants. There were probably 7 dishes we were debating - it was so hard to choose! We decided on the eggplant curry and the Bhindi Okra. Both were absolutely incredible. The space was a little small on the inside, with only a couple tables. But there was a ton of additional seating outside that made the space spacious and the ambiance outside was intimate. Wish we were going to be on the island longer so we could come back and try those other dishes. Guess we will have to come back to Kauai! read more

The owner came and talked to us and she told us that they were planning to open another restaurant in the near future. We look forward to coming back and to trying the new restaurant. Super great Indian food! We were looking for a new cuisine to try after a few days of poke and burgers. My husband and toddler split a butter chicken, rice and naan. We all felt full and satisfied. This lived up to its name, so ono! We let them know we wanted everything made vegan, and asked for tofu in the saag. The saag tofu and basmati rice were both delish and the garlic chili naan was decent, but the dal makhani was OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD good!! The lentils were perfectly cooked and spiced, and they replaced the dairy with coconut, which made it especially delicious. The naan was not as great as we have had before, it was ok but not fluffy light and crispy on outside chewy on inside; it was like a really good toasted pita bread. Started by sharing samosa chaat; to our surprise, this was served warm, a generous portion in a bowl that could've been an entrée, for me. Any time we've had chaat, it's been cool. Something new! I had tandoori shrimp, medium spicy. It had a little kick to it, without setting my mouth on fire! Hubs had his go-to, chana masala, and couldn't quite finish it. Delicious stop on our way to the airport! After a week of amazing seafood, we were so excited for a tasty Indian meal before we left the island. We arrived just as they opened for lunch, were seated at a nice table on the patio, and had prompt and friendly service. We started with our go to "samosa chaat" which had a delicious flavor! Although it was a bit light on the samosa and heavy on the chaat. We split the mushroom butter masala with vegetables, plain naan and basmati rice. The flavors were pleasant, the medium spice had a nice cumulative heat, and we licked our plates clean! My only suggestion for improvement, the tall tables and chairs, while both were comfortable, together they were not. Either the tables need to be higher or the chairs a bit lower. I live on island and come regularly. It's good but not really worth it unless you're craving Indian. I get the same thing every time: butter chicken, rice and garlic naan. The price changes each time I go, so clearly they try to get more out of you that they should. I pay anywhere from $45-$50 for the items above which to me is a little ridiculous. Service is poor, the woman usually has an attitude and is not attentive. Overall, small food portions, poor customer service and constantly upcharging every time you order. I want to say it's the tax, but it's not, just greed unfortunately. read more

The curry and Nann is spot on! We had the coconut curry with ono (wahoo fish). We tried the garlic nann and the herb nann. The service is very good and drinks were very delicious. My wife had somekind of guava with spicy type of peppers. I tried it and was a delight. It's a bit crowded inside but they have two outside covered decks. The bar inside is nice and seats about 5-6 and parking isn't bountiful but it's definitely worth it for a change of of all the fish places that abound Kauai The couple next to us also agreed and ordered extra nann and curry to have at home the next day. Wow!! Ono Bar & Grill offers amazing authentic Indian cuisine in a very nice location in Kapaa! I love this place. Delicious Coconut Curry - Vegetable with Basmati Rice It was flavorful and Authentic Indian Spices. The energy of the restaurant is very good. The coconut curry was fulfilling! I felt full and satisfied. Then I walked back to my hotel. During 20 minute-walk, i didn't know what happened; I felt great energy and kept smiling peacefully. Food is medicine.
