The Pros - very clean inside, fairly quick service The Cons - authentic Kalua Pork has cabbage in it, I had to order Hawaiian Mac Salad as an appetizer. I've never been to any Hawaiian Grill that Mac Salad didn't come with a combo meal. The rice wasn't sticky, in fact I didn't know I had rice until I got to the bottom of my meal? Who puts your protein selection on top of what is supposed to be sticky rice which disintegrates it. Final Grade - C. Not terrible but far from authentic. read more

Food is good. Customer service sucks. No one acknowledges you when you walk in and both the cashiers are on their phones and sipping on their Starbucks rather than helping the customer out. Was forced to order on the kiosk. Not sure if they have a plumbing issue or the place really just needs a deep clean but there is a funky smell like drainage or sewer problem or maybe even the build up on the dirty floors causing an odor . I've been here a few times and every time they get my order wrong somehow. Specifically on the receipt was no veggies and macaroni portions however two times I have gone have get that wrong and still give veggies and only 1 portion of macaroni. They don't take long thankfully but they could improve a LOT on making orders correct. The portion sizes have also been different every time I go and the most recent 2 times have been smaller and smaller portions. The food itself is fine except for the rice. Worst experience here. Ordered 2 mini meals and got 2 kids meals instead. Went back and exchanged the order and they gave us the littlest amount of meat I've ever seen. Half of the plate was cabbage. Hawaiin BBQ mix - ordered this on 2 different days and 1 time all meats were more tender and juicy while other time was slightly drier. BBQ chicken is soft and tasty. BBQ beef when it was tender was pretty good. Kalbi rib good sear and tasty also. Rice is chewy and cooked well. Veggies fresh too. Store is clean. Get your own teriyaki sauce, and soy sauce and siracha sauce packets. read more

This Ono Hawaiian BBQ is in the same plaza where Target is and they are right by Starbucks in the corner. This is my usual location to go to, and I would put a phone order in and the food is usually ready by the time I get to the store. This is one of my favorite spots to eat for a quick and protein filled meal after the gym. Downside is their price is always increasing for their meals. I like ordering the grilled chicken breast (lemon pepper) and sometimes the kalbi short ribs. It usually comes with one scoop of macaroni salad, two scoops of rice, and some veggies. I wish they give more macaroni salad and veggies instead of the rice. read more

Pretty basic Hawaaian BBQ but it really hits the spot.  BBQ beef and firecracker chicken are solid.  Kalua pork isn't bad.  Spam Mussubi is also really good if you're down with it being served hot (never had it this way but I preferred it).  The salad that comes in the combo plate is a good step up from your average free salad.   Portion size is not bad.  I would give it an easy 5 stars if it were pre-inflation prices, but even as is, I might increase it to 5 stars if I get to try more items.  Better than other Hawaaian BBQ chains for sure! read more

However, the restaurant forgot our (2) sides of macaroni salad that we ordered on the side. $12. I called because I would prefer the Mac salad vs getting a refund. Disappointing - I was just so disappointed in the catering. My brother bought the package that was supposed to feed 45-50 people. It was $500. Keep that in mind. It came with 2 large trays of white rice. I mean how much rice can 1 person eat? If you buy the combo meals, they give you a small scoop of rice so how come the package comes with so much of a filler?! Then there was another large tray of crab rangoons spaced out, not even full. And a full tray of Mac salad. As for the meat, they all came in 1/2 trays. Half katsu, half teriyaki chicken, half kalbi, and half Kalua pork (dry). The chicken and pork were on a bed of cooked cabbage. They gave tons of sauce, like 4 soup bowls of katsu and teriyaki sauce. I mean are we supposed to be drinking the sauce? There was not enough meat for what they gave. I went to another restaurant for another party just yesterday and picked up a large tray of delicious chicken teriyaki filled to the very top, a bit above the top even for only $85. I ordered Chicken Katsu and Terriyaki Chicken. The Katsu portion was alright, lots of vegetables. However the Katsu by itself was flavorless, and the sauce was cold so already a bad start. The worst was the chicken. It looks old and rancid, and it tastes old and rancid. I think they marinated the chicken overnight; it tastes like they drenched the chicken in sauce to the point where you can't taste it; it's like cardboard and it tastes like garbage, worse than lunch food. 0/10 will not come back Here's a picture, the camera distorts how colorless and over seasoned and old the chicken is. read more

I normally love this place and I've been coming here for months but today was a total miss, I'm disappointed. I recognize that we are in a pandemic and times are hard on all of us but I'm trying to support small local food businesses. The cashier was not in the mood to serve us from the beginning I feel unwanted at the restaurant. I order my same as usual and my boyfriend pays extra for some ribs. However when we get the order there is barely any ribs despite him paying extra. In the meantime the cashier has proceeded to disagree with the chef so to avoid the extra drama we left too. Maybe Ono Hawaiian Barbecue just isn't for me? I've been here a couple of times to try the chicken katsu but two times it's been subpar compared to other katsu I've had. The overall vibe of Ono is fast-food for sure; they have a soda fountain and a station to pump out various sauces. Both times I've eaten here it took an incredibly long time to actually get the food so I'm not sure what's up. However, the real disappointment was the food. The katsu was not flavorful at all and the chicken was more like a low-grade chewy mess; it was so bad I didn't eat it all. Whereas other katsu I've eaten has white meat and was juicy, this chicken was sinewy and dark in spots. Their teriyaki sauce didn't help and I found it too watery. Frying helps mask the poor chicken quality but not even floating in grease with a crispy crust could save these chicken breasts. The other big disappointment was the macaroni salad. Bland doesn't accurately describe it; I'd say it tastes like eating mayonnaise but with fewer flavors. I took about three bites and didn't finish it. The saving grace was the bbq beef that I ordered the second time I came--the beef was my insurance against a bad katsu. Compared to the chicken katsu, the beef was more flavorful and pretty tasty. Overall, I'm not sure if I have the right palette to appreciate the food here or if people who leave good reviews of this food just never had anything better? read more

Hawaiian for dinner it is! Their food is hit or miss for sure. Today I've order (2) Lemon Pepper Chicken, Spam and BBQ Chicken Musubi. I was not feeling the musubi at all.. they should not add the teriyaki sauce to it. Something about the teriyaki sauce tasted different and that killed the flavor of the BBQ Chicken and Spam. BUT... One of those places I felt extremely guilty about before even walking in the front door. Inside, I threw all restraint out the window and went with the Seafood Mix Combo plate (~$8.50) - fried whitefish, 6 fried shrimp (2 are shaped into a shrimp-ring of victory), and BBQ chicken atop steamed cabbage next to some mac salad and white rice. Carbs, fat, carbs, fat, protein, and some veggie sustenance from the cabbage (which really bumped it up to 3.5 stars for me). The food was pretty good, not soggy or over-fried. At the end of a long day, I was pretty stoked on it, and had enough to take home. That partly means knowing what you DONT want(for me it's the Mayo-macaroni salad that a lot of Hawaiian places serve). BUT, I do love their fried proteins with tartar sauce. OH GAWD I LOVE IT. So, you know, get some rice and enjoy the katsu salad; it's tastes good with their sauce and has edamame beans(protein too). Yes they're corporate, and have many outlets in the B.A. They do make consistent and very fine tasting Hawaiian-style BBQ at each of their locations. When you walk into an Ono Hawaiian outlet, you will get the same quality as almost any other. That's reliability and consistency. I am here for usually their Chicken Katsu and 'Fire' Chicken. Their portions are very generous for the prices charged. Ono's macaroni salad is not to be missed! I love their macaroni salad. The rice is actually more than just edible. The salad dressing on their garden side salad is a very delicious too. Not seemingly from a bottle. While my sentimental favorite Hawaiian BBQ joint is still L & L, the 'food deliciousness factor' between the two outlets are almost the same. All this makes for a pleasing and reasonably priced meal. The Hayward location is modern, clean, and spacious. The employees are friendly and efficient in processing your order. The restrooms are modern and clean. I was in town and went to 24 Hour Fitness on my lunch hour and then hit up Ono for a salad. The salad was delicious! The service was absolutely terrible. The young lady who took my order spoke in a very very soft voice, I could barely hear her when I asked her what came in the salad. I waited patiently for order to be ready on a table nearby the cashier counter. My order was number 108 and 109 was called before mine - the young lady got the order for 109 and when my order came up, she saw it and walked away to clean condiments leaving my order for the next person to get it and give it to me. She made the experience of going to Ono unpleasant. She acted the same way without a "thank you" or a smile to every person that ordered from Ono. I definitely won't be back and I hope the manager talks to her about her unpleasant attitude. read more
