I'd never claim to be a expert on Hawaiian food, but I've been lucky enough to have a friend (he's Hawaiian) who's a chef on the big island, who has brought me to his favorite spots, and spoil me with his knowledge of Hawaiian food. And living in Seattle for 20 years ... has exposed me to some good Hawaiian as well. Walking into Ono on a whim was by chance . I wanted something different but never did I expect to be wowed with this food in Minnesota... so many miles removed. I had the Loco Moco with hamburger steak. Came heaped with a beautiful serving of rice, macaroni salad, gravy and two eggs sunny side up (perfectly cooked) every single thing on the plate was as amazing as the next. The macaroni was salad was a point of conversation between us, but so was everything. My co-diner had the Chicken Katsu and garlic shrimp served with 2 scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and a katsu sauce. Once again... a slam dunk. Every single thing! We shared an order of spam to keep it OG, and by far the best spam I had ever touched to my lips. Who would have thunk it could have been leveled up so simply. This meal by far was one of the most amazing and pleasant surprises I could have ever expected, and can't wait to go back for more. Service style is very causal...order at the counter, get a number and they bring the food to you. Uncomplicated, and direct. Very friendly service and very dog friendly on the patio. Came here for a quick lunch the other day and was surprised by how big the portions were. I got the katsu and teriyaki chicken plate which came with rice, sauce, and cold mac salad. This was my second time trying this place and it is absolutely amazing! I have been to Oahu once and this is so spot on to being on the island! It is paid street parking but you can either download the app or there are pay stations. This place is located inside a dining hall with 3 other restaurants. In the center there is a bar. There are board/card games that you can grab if you want! There are also stations with water/glasses/silverware/napkins etc... there is also an outdoor patio that is gorgeous! The service here was fantastic and so friendly! The food: holy moly yum!! Sooo good!! I have had the pork and now the shrimp and both were spot on to what I had when I was in Hawaii!! Soooo tasty!! Their menu has a variety of options to choose from whether it be from burgers or spicy chicken sandwiches to spam sushi and poke bowls. The food was made to order and served hot! Their burger is one of the best burgers I've tasted. The meat was marinated in teriyaki sauce. Next time, I'd get the fries without any sauce, but you cannot go wrong with either sandwich. You can also order directly from the restaurant if you prefer. We were craving Hawaiian food and it did not disappoint. started with Spam Musubi. Very fresh, well seasoned, and warm. Perfect to start your meal. Portions are HUGE and very well priced for the location! We decided to share a Kalua Pork and Katsu Chicken Combo, and Spam Fried Rice, and it was almost too much. Katsu was nice and crispy and the pork was super tender and well seasoned. I'd highly recommend you get the Teriyaki BBQ sauce to dip the Katsu in. The sticky rice was perfect to balance out textures and flavors. The Spam Fried Rice is as simple and delicious as it sounds. Well seasoned with a healthy dose of sesame oil. Because this is a food court style hall, it can be a little louder than a typical restaurant, but the place is very spacious and there is plenty of seating to accommodate small and large groups. We were so excited to see a Hawaiian spot within Minneapolis, that we failed to realize it was within the North Loop Galley. We found a food hall similar to this in Southern Florida, and were thrilled to see the style made its way north. You can choose to order from your table via QR code from any of the available choices within the food hall (including the bar), or you can walk up and order. Be aware - this is an open floor plan, so it can get noisy quickly. It was only about half full when we visited and we struggled to hear one another across the table. We tried, and split, a few different options. We were pleasantly surprised by the portions considering the pricing for the location. The Katsu was crunchy and juicy. The Kalua Pork was tender but a bit salty for my taste. The Spam Musubi was warm and the saltiness of the Spam paired well with the minimal salt in the rice. The Fried Rice was savory but could have used more flavor - I would recommend adding a sauce to your order to adjust the flavoring to fit your palate. As someone who has spent much of my life in the islands, I am always on the search for some 'ono grindz and 'āina style food. This place has just that. Here, you can find poke, kalua pork, huli huli chicken, mac salad, and plenty of other island favorites, all for an affordable price. I opted for the spicy and shoyu poke, mac salad, kalua pork, and huli huli chicken, and all were absolutely incredible. By far the best poke I've had in the Twin Cities, and some of the closest I've found to island style outside of the islands. The mac salad was wonderful as well as the kalua pork and huli huli chicken. Everything was great and certainly what I had hoped it to be. The service is nice enough, you order at a window and someone will come bring it to you, and clean up your dishes. Very efficient. And the ambiance is good enough too, it's in one of those more modern looking food-court establishments in which several vendors occupy a space, and the tables are all shared. Katsu & Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Combo (3/5 rating): I didn't like either of the sauce options but the grill marks and flavor from the Hawaiian BBQ chicken was the star of the show for me and a 5/5. It was juicy and had that perfect char taste. The rice was a bit too soft and soggy for my preference. I was so excited to try Hawaiian max and cheese which was basically pasta salad which I love so I didn't mind- would have just liked more salt. Glad MN has some Hawaiian food options now. Location is inside a small food hall that can get kind of loud but ordering is very easy. Buy extra sauce as you will need at least 2 and they have multiple flavors. The Kalua pork is a little salty and doesn't have much flavor, not too different from regular pulled pork but my partner liked it. The garlic noodles were a little salty but went well with the creamy Mac salad. Pro tip they do charge a credit card fee of 3% so bring cash if you have it. You order at the vendor and they will give you a number and will bring the food out later. Its somewhat a self service place. They have water bottles, cups, and plates in little carts throughout the dining area for you to get. After you're done, they have people come and clean your table. There are tables inside and also on the patio for nice summer days. Street metered parking since it is downtown. Food comes within 10-15 minutes so it's pretty fast. I think it's Taylor's towards work people for quick and fast lunch break maybe? While waiting for food I ordered a peach cocktail at the bar. It's a bar but they don't have every cocktail or ingredients to make everything you want. But it's not bad. Loco moco chicken katsu- I usually get just the plain chi ne katsu combo but go the loco moco version this time. The difference is, it comes with the sauce and fried eggs on top. Regular order is just chicken Katsu, macaroni salad and rice. Chicken is crispy and tender. Macaroni is good. Not sure if I'll get the loco moco version next time since nothing too special and it's 4-5$ extra. 4/5 Hurricane fries - it's basically just fries drizzle with 2-3 difference sauces. It's ok. For I think 7-8$ it's nothing special. 2/5 Chicken burger - the burger does come with fries! Same fries as hurricane minus the sauce. I would have been fine with this and didn't need to order extra fries. Chicken is spicy but not too spicy. Not sure if this is the place I'd come for chicken sandwich though. 3/5. Definitely come here to get their chicken katsu dishes. Don't come for fries and chicken sandwich since they're not really known for it. A great place for friends gathering since it's big and spacious. They other stand sells pizza, tacos and wings for those who doesn't want chicken katsu. Difference options for difference people :). This sauce however was really zesty. Kalbi: I had recently had some pretty mediocre Kalbi recently in Florida. This restored my faith. The KBBQ-adjacent style short ribs were so flavorful from the grill that the flavors rubbed off onto the bed of white rice it was served on. Mac Salad: Very creamy, a perfect complement. The Luau Bowl was delicious. I loved being able to get a bowl that had both poke and kalua pork because I always have a hard time trying to decide between the two.
