While I enjoyed my facial and massage treatments (the reason for 2 stars vs 1) the amenities at the spa were very much lacking. The decor is dated and worn, the private whirlpool was not operable at the time of my visit, and the sauna was literally closet sized. The relaxation room has these chairs that are upholstered in a super itchy fabric, so I went to the only other room with chairs but it is situated next to the salon and you can hear their loud music playing which defeats the spa experience. Oh, and the shower had hair on the soap ledge and the water didn't get hot so that was nice. The waiting room in the treatment area of the spa is better (with snacks and decent seating) but I was unaware of this because the tour given by the attendant ended right outside the door, otherwise I would have hung out there until it was time for my treatments. I won't be back except to use the pool and hottub in the common area as a guest of the hotel...also, I think the use of the Japanese word "Onsen" is a joke and the antithesis to the vibe of this spa. And they played Laura's Theme from Twin Peaks twice while I was there, which was amusing but slightly depressing. read more

This is one of my favorite places in South Lake Tahoe/Stateline Nevada. The ambiance is peaceful and relaxing. The pool, jacuzzi and sauna are huge. The fitness center is great. We decided to get massages last minute and Onsen accommodated us. The first surprise was the indoor pool. We didn't have our swimsuits, but next time we'll have them! The locker room was another surprise with a women's only hot tub, steam room, sauna and relaxing seating areas. I had a mini facial with Coco and I left with my face GLOWING. Tom was my masseuse and gave me the perfect pressure Swedish massage. I will definitely be back here next time I'm in town. read more

Had the best facial with Socorro! This is my second time getting a facial here and my face feels lovely! The spa area has a steam room, jacuzzi, sauna, showers, sitting area, blowdriers, razors, deodorant it has it all! But really these facials leave me glowwwwiinnngggg. The day after my facial, there was an extremely noticeable difference, when I put my makeup on it felt like I had no pores! By the weekend I actually chose to go makeup less when I went out. Because of that, I had to come back! Socorro took a good look at my skin and really focused on my trouble spots rather than just going through the motions of a facial. Update June 2018...well I gave it a little over two years since my first visit. Unfortunately, the spa has made zero improvements. You can't charge spa prices if you aren't offering spa amenities. Still the same relaxation rooms that aren't relaxing at all. Still only one infused water, and the only snacks are apples. No trail mix, nuts, etc. I booked two treatments for today, thankfully they were both free otherwise I would've been talking to management. They were out of the product for my first treatment so I had to have something else. The technician had to leave twice during the treatment to get other products. Completely unacceptable. During my second treatment, she had to leave once again to get more product. Again unacceptable. There was so much wrong with this particular visit that I thought I might be on candid camera. I would go into more detail but Yelp has a limit on how many text characters I can use. ********************************* I was very happy excited to try this spa. Unfortunately it doesn't even come close to Spa Atlantis or the Toscana Spa at the Peppermill. Not even close. It was lacking the "zen" factor. I give the actual spa facility only a two star rating. It is not impressive at all. It was too chilly in areas. The women's Jacuzzi is right by the lockers so that is awkward. The steam room and sauna were fine and they do have a beautiful pool area outside of the spa. There are so many areas for improvement it's not even funny. Four instance, one of the relaxation rooms is it's kind of a joke. It is situated right next to the salon so you can hear music playing loudly in there and it is not relaxing music whatsoever. There were also only two lounge chairs in this relaxation room which is silly. No tables to put your drinks on or books or whatever. So everything had to be set on the floor. It is also by the locker room which gets loud. So there is no way to relax. Another relaxation room is also off of the locker area, thus all the loud noise. Inside the locker area, they have only one infused water. Absolutely no snacks there. Any kind of toiletries are at a bare minimum. There is a small area that you wait before being called into your treatment. It is quaint with a fireplace, but here it was in the middle of winter and the fireplace was off! Only one infused water here too along with hot tea. They only had whole apples, no trail mix, pretzels, nothing. In the entire spa they only had 5 apples as snacks. Now onto the treatments. I had a hot rock massage and my masseuse was very strong and attentive. She was very good and was, by far, the highlight of this visit. I also had a facial and the technician did a fine job. The product line however, was nothing impressive. Most of the music that they play in the treatment rooms is more of a classical music rather than "spa sounds".... birds chirping, the ocean, trickling water. The problem with the classical music is throughout the songs there were many crescendos and the music would get extremely loud. So just as I was starting to float away, I would be jolted back to reality by the music. I guess the only way I would come back to this facility is if it was free. For the money that they charge, you are better off going to Reno and having an actual spa experience there. read more

Onsen will not extend the expiration dates on seasonal or yearly memberships nor compensate members at all for amenities we pay for. After many similar complaints Onsen is now saying they will give us an extension on expiration dates. Review to be reedited then. read more

It's not the most stylish place, but the service was ah-mazing! I spent a half-day at Onsen (inside Monte Blue Casino) being pampered with a massage, facial, manicure and pedicure. I would happily return and recommend it to friends. Here I summarize the drawbacks and highlights from my experience, and offer my advice if you decide to visit Onsen: DRAWBACKS I didn't have high expectations for the facility, since its in an older hotel property (formerly Cesar's). Sure enough, it smells like a smokey casino when you walk in the front door of Monte Blue. The spa is tucked in the back, with the entrance is adjacent to one of the nicest indoor pools in South Lake Tahoe (waterfall!). The smell of stale smoke is quickly overwhelmed by the smell of chlorine. The spa reception doubles as the snack bar for the pool, and the young folks working there lack the refinement you would expect from an upscale spa. Their ditzy manners take away from what could have been a lux experience from start to finish. MY ADVICE: Ignore the strong smells and awkward reception and get ready for an lovely experience once you walk through the spa doors. Change into your terry cloth robe, pour a glass of lemon water, and get ready to relax. HIGHLIGHTS The very best thing about this spa is the spa technicians. MessageEnvy and nail shops are accessible, but the services here are far superior. The people make it worth the price! Onsen uses Pevonia spa products, a luxurious organic line that I've had the chance to use before. It speaks volumes about the quality and attention to detail inside the spa. I left with two travel sets of Pevonia skin care that I gave as gifts (even though I was never even asked to buy). The locker room is clean and well-appointed, but belies the property's age. The Jacuzzi was hot -- but not too hot -- and the steam room was lovely. The showers and bathroom appeared to be recently remodeled, and there were plenty of complimentary towels, shampoo, and lotion. The nail service was comfortable and sanitary - no suspicious massage chairs with their own bacteria cultures. The pedicure stations are elevated in a room with Ceylon basins and bamboo floors. The nail technician, Charlie, was friendly and experienced without being intrusive. The spa services are in a separate, quite area away from the noise of the hair and nail portion. The massage therapist, Rosemarie, is dual licensed as an esthetician. This makes for a seamless transition between a massage and facial - ultra relaxing. The treatment room was warm and the massage table was comfy. I get about 6 or 7 massages a year; this one stands out as one of the best. It was the right mix of deep tissue and relaxing body work. The massage lotion was just what my mountain dry skin needed. Finally, the facial was the cherry on top. The products are the perfect balance of calming, moisturizing, and invigorating. Rosemarie was attentive and professional, and worked with confidence that is born out of experience. My skin was noticeably more clear an calm when I walked out. I came away feeling relaxed and rejuvenated - exactly what I want after a spa day. MY ADVICE: Ask for Charlie and Rosemarie. You won't be disappointed. read more

This review is just for the Onsen Spa: The Hispanic employee with dark hair and light shaved face was one of the most annoying experiences I have had. He asked us twice after seeing us about the 10$ fee to use the gym/spa after we had already payed earlier . Secondly, I waited long and nobody was in the front desk to talk to (assuming it was that gentleman) he looked in his mid twenties and had an accent. I felt harassed as he kept staring at us like if he had a problem. Before I left I made sure I showed him my receipt of my paid fee, he didn't acknowledge me. I was looking for a surprise for my wife on our first anniversary, and I thought why not our first couples massage. They did not disappoint. The staff was very friendly. I wanted to do something special for my wife so I called ahead to see if I could arrange something. They offered to have some champagne in the room for us, and the best party was they gave it to us for free! That was an awesome way for us to start our massage. They brought us the champagne before so we could sip it in the nice quiet waiting area. The facilities were pretty clean. I liked the waiting room area (it reminds me of the haunted mansion at Disneyland, my wife and I both thought that right away. We like the haunted mansion so it was a good thing) the waiting area was pretty relaxing. The rooms were nice. We tried the aroma therapy, it was nice but I am not entirely sure how much it added to the massage, but it was only $5 extra so it wasn't too bad. The massage itself was great, the 50 minutes went by too fast. Overall I think I would come back next time I was in Tahoe and looking for a massage. read more

The spa facilities were better than what I expected, but the staff could have been a little more considerate and warm than they actually were. We checked in at the front desk of the spa and the girl on duty there looked like she didn't even want to be there or even speak to us for that matter. We just concluded that maybe she had a bad day--fine, it happens. But overall, their staff seems to lack the understanding of what a spa really means: tranquility, serenity, and, most of all, quiet. They have metal lockers in their spa area, a little older, but it works. It's great that their staff comes in periodically to clean up the area, but it'd be a little more considerate if they actually checked the facilities to see if anyone was there before proceeding to walk down the aisle to slam all the lockers closed...so much for piece and quiet. My complaint lies with their general staff. My masseuse was great though. I got the hot stone massage--private room and personal attention. Called before my reservation to learn more about their spa treatments as follows: "Enjoy your choice of two 50-minute treatments at a special rate, pick 2 for $200. Appointments available Sunday through Friday." My wife was excited and placed a reservation. Thursday, one day before the appointment, their staff member Lidia called to inform they changed their mind and they wouldn't honor the special since they've gotten busy during the holidays. The advertising is even on flyers in our hotel room and according to Lidia it's a scam set up by her manager Cindy. I left my phone number to hear what this manager has to say but haven't heard back. What a good way to start my year off right....by hangin' out in the spa on New Year's, which by the way, I TOTALLY recommend EVERYONE to do on New Year's Day, regardless where you are located. I came out of that place with a big smile, relaxed, and rejuvenated. I swear, as soon as I walked out of the door, I stopped, inhaled the fresh air for about 5 seconds, and blew out by sayin'.... "ahhhhhhhhh". I definitely felt like a whole new person. First of all, their massage rates are similar to Burke's (maybe a lil cheaper), which is on the pricier side compared to other spas I've been to. For a 50 minute Swedish, it was $115. And for hot stones, it was $145. I enjoy getting massages with hot stones, but that was just a tad bit too much for only 50 minutes, so I stuck with the Swedish. Anyway, I ended up with a male masseuse...for the first time. I was a lil weirded out by it. What if he was a tall, buff dude, with a really deep voice that wasn't sooo welcoming? Me being me, I kept over analyzing while I was sitting quietly in the waiting room. Wouldn't you feel weird? Envision it. Anyway, he wasn't. He was gay (gay as in happy), very friendly, and had soft hands. I was hoping he'd sneak in some hot stones for me, but I guess my flirting didn't work, if I even know HOW to flirt. Ha. Regardless, my massage was great! I wished he added just a lil bit more pressure, but nonetheless, it was still quite satisfying. Don't you just hate it when you know it's almost over, then he/she slightly taps you and whispers, "all done"?? Anyway, after my massage was done, I headed straight to the steam room in the ladie's room. I was even happier because no one was in there, and I had it all to myself for a good half hour. I was pleased. But note that you need proper spa etiquette when entering a steam room. My bf and other guy friend went into the steam room in the men's section and caught an old, BUTT NAKED guy doing Bikram Yoga! LOL! Now, visualizing an old man doing 10 foot lunges with balls hanging out for their dear lives is not so pleasing to the eye; although, I wished I was there to witness it so I can have a good 10 minute ab workout from laughing so hard. But anyway, back to my experience..... Steam room was GREAT. Going into the Jacuzzi afterwards was GREAT. Putting on cucumbers on your eyes and lying down listening to your ipod was GREAT. I mean, really, I had a GREAT experience. I also made sure I used up ALL the amenities and items to get my money's worth; for instance, I used a hair brush they provided that was a lil ganky, even though I'd brought my very own brush with me. I used up their shampoo, conditioner, soap, blow dryer, curling iron, stole a few mouth washes. I had a blast! Thank you for making my New Year's Day a memorable one! I was revitalized. :) read more

Clearly when reaching out to someone to the spa some things just don't get handled the way they should be. Such dissatisfaction to receive when they clearly lie to you about being busy on a Sunday and they must abide to it. Obviously this was a blunt lie. Working in hospitality/spa or anyone working in this field clearly Sunday's would be the day everyone leaves and departs thus leaving the in house at a low occupancy and open for the books. It seemed as though when talking to the Spa manager she sounded like she was in a hurry to further address the situation and sincerely apologize and leave me on with my day. Clearly it would make sense that when selling the littlest thing as a day pass on Friday's and Saturdays would be better sense, then leaving Sunday's open for local/ non hotel guest to purchase. Even the simplest things could not be addressed and the fact that you want to give them revenue for treatments or day pass they will not show the slightest interest. Save your money and go somewhere better. Other places with such a smaller facility will sell or schedule you in on a day like this if or when it is available. read more

I love Monte Bleu hotel I stay here every time I visit Tahoe which is a few times a year! I came up with 8 girls for my sisters bachelorette party for the weekend. I called Onsen spa and made reservations to use the spa facilities for a Saturday a month in advance. A week before I called just to make sure that everything was set up and ready to go and the girl informed me that they don't take large parties on weekends just to use the spa facility which was NOT communicated when I had originally booked. She told me that it was their fault and that she would leave a note and this would be a one time thing. Upon arriving they told us that they didn't have anything down for our party. The supervisor came out and was super rude and accused us of lying. Her employee then infact found the note in which she looked super annoyed and then pleased as she rudely started to read it thinking that it would say that they informed us we wouldn't be able to use the facility. Instead it stated that she told us that it was unavailable but that they had made a mistake and would accommodate us this once. She had us all pay then sent us in, no tour, no help, all the staff was horrible all day. We received one locker for the 8 of us, no robes and no spa shoes. They told us that the spa was 100% booked and really couldn't fit us. We were there over an hour and there were MAYBE 2 other woman the entire time. If we thought this was bad.... The spa was absolutely disgusting, so dirty, the steam room didn't even work which left us only the sauna and spa which were both FILTHY!!! Take a look at my pictures to see! I honestly am not one to give horrible reviews but this place was a NIGHTMARE, from horrible service to a disgusting facility... No magazine selection. Love the gym facilities and the private hot tub. It's such a treat to leave the noise of the general pool area and find quiet and relaxation! I definitely agree with the past comment, however, of the disrespect of the staff. There seems to always be staff running in and out to clean, grab towels, check lockers, even change their clothes. I really don't want to see the receptionist naked in the locker room!!! A little more courtesy and less intrusion by the staff would be nice! Also, the sauna never seems to work and the steam room needs to be hotter. Good for the price but definitely not a high end, professional facility!! read more

I got my and my daughters nails done the day before my wedding. I was excited because it was something her and I could do together before the wedding. It was my daughters first time getting acrylics. First off, there was only one nail tech. The nail tech didn't want to hear about any ideas that we had so she did her own thing. She burned my cuticles numerous times. When my daughter sat to get her nails done, the tech told her she didn't have tips that would fit her fingers so proceeded to use tips that were too large for her fingers! Secondly, it took 4 HOURS for both of us to get nails done! When my daughter was getting hers done, the tech stopped what she was doing to show her pictures of her grandson that worked in the casino!!!! Seriously?!?! My daughter is 14..... Lastly, my nails started lifting the day of my wedding and the gel topcoat started coming off! !!!!! It was way too expensive for what we got done - for 2 hours each, we should have had the bomb nails to show off and be proud of. Front desk staff was not very friendly and had to search for our appointment. It was disappointing to say the least. read more

Actually incredible. I feel like I just floated home!! First of all, the Onsen spa at Montbleu is luxurious and impeccably clean. All the staff are welcoming and friendly and the locker room is very well-appointed. I had an hour-long Swedish massage with Evelyn who was wonderful - she really worked on all my knots and sore bits, and made me realize that I really need to do this way more often! Then the incredible Cindy gave me the facial of dreams - she is so experienced with all things skin-related, and knew exactly what to do to get my poor middle-aged skin glowing. I can't believe how soft my skin feels - like it's woken up for the first time in years. I called in inquiring about the spa package (pick two services for $225). The gentleman I spoke to said that they no longer offered the special and they needed to update their website. I finally booked a service for myself and a friend of mine after about 10 min of deliberation. Then after we booked he called me back (which was really nice) saying they did have the package. Additionally I inquired about a locals discount and if they honor that for Reno residents and he said yes. When we checked in, we asked again about the discount and we were told they would acknowledge it. When we were checking out for our appointment, even though we had a player's card, they said only those in the immediate Tahoe area and Carson qualified for the 25% discount. Very upsetting since the price was not what we were promised when booked and checked in. Sounds like a lot of staff confusion and a lot of overall disappointment. read more

After reserving (8 weeks in advance) wedding day appointments for hair, makeup and nails, I called to confirm only to discover that they had booked makeup, pedicure, and nail appointments ONLY. The hair person was now booked because it was a busy weekend and "they were booked 2 weeks ago". No kidding, that's why I booked 2 MONTHS BEFORE. They basically called me a liar saying I never asked for hair appointments and did absolutely nothing to try and fix the problem. Even the manager refused to help me, saying their reservations were NEVER wrong and I must be mistaken. Considering I booked for MY OWN WEDDING and there were four people in the room to confirm what I said, these people were totally incompetent and could not figure out what they were doing. At 100+ per hair appointment, you'd think they could handle reservations 2 months in advance. read more
