Now that I have tried other sandos, we are changing it from a 5 to a 4 star restaurant. The ube latte and the katsu sando are still solid selections. The katsu seems like it's made as you order so the crunch is fresh and real and full of flavor with each bite. The ube latter is still one of my faves. The other sandos were just okay. Something felt missing from them - maybe a little toast of the bread like with the katsu sando. But they weren't as memorable as the katsu. In summary, Onto is still a cute coffee shop. You are more likely to get a seat if you come earlier in the day before anyone wakes up. And the best sando to choose is the katsu one. Drinks are honestly up to you. I can't drink coffee so the tune latte is my choice of a drink. read more

Well, I've now been to Onto four times since they opened in Belmar. They're close to my house and have unique offerings so I've been hopeful I'd love it. Unfortunately, one thing has been consistent all four times I've visited: the baristas are really not friendly. Every time I've gone, it feels like I'm a bother as a customer. Like, I've been excited when they get new menu items and when I ask questions, they seem like it's a huge inconvenience to answer. They don't make any conversation and legitimately, everyone I say thank you to (after placing my order, when grabbing my matcha today), they don't say "You're welcome" or engage with me any further. Today when I went to take my matcha to go, I said "Thank you!" super cheerfully, and the barista just walked away without saying anything. It's really a bummer to feel like my mere existence bothers them when I'm paying $10 (inducing tip) for a matcha. Speaking of cost. I do not have any problem spending $10 on a delicious specialty drink. I have my favorite matcha spots around town and GLADLY pay $10 for a well-crafted drink, even when my friends or coworkers give me a hard time about spending that much. Here at Onto, the drinks are good. But I do think they're a bit overpriced. For example, two of my favorite drink spots that I regularly go to make their drinks with fresh, house made purées. You can really taste the difference. At Onto, many of the flavored drinks I've gotten, I watch them make it and they are just made with Monin syrups. To me, I'd rather pay $10 for a drink that has fresh puree versus one I can get the flavoring at any big box store. Food: The first time I visited with my husband, we were really excited about the sandos. He ordered the chicken katsu and I ordered the eggs salad. My egg salad was shockingly bland, but nothing was really wrong with it. Fine to eat, would just prefer more seasoning. But my husband's sandwich was just all tendon. To the point where you couldn't finish the sandwich because it was just chewy tendon throughout. That was the only time we've ordered food, so I can't speak to other items. But I likely won't be getting a sando again. All in all, Onto has a great menu with lots of variety and fun flavors. I've enjoyed their hojicha and their black sesame matcha. Unfortunately, it's just not going to be my go-to due to me feeling like I'm bothering them every time I go. But if you're looking for a good drink and don't give much weight to customer service, Onto is certainly worth a try. read more

Another Saturday another coffee shop. Small cute new little coffee shop. I got the Hong kong latte and my boyfriend got the Vienna latte. It was iced which i love ice coffee. WOW!!! I've been following this new AAPI owned coffee shop on social media since they opened, and finally got to stop in today. It's event cuter in person!!! I got the black sesame matcha latte and when I say the flavor was chefs kiss- it was amaaaaazing!!!! They make matcha the right way in store, too :) And because I have zero self control, and it was 9 am, I ordered a spam and egg sando (Japanese style sandwich with super soft bread) and a crab salad onigiri. While I saved these to eat later in the day- I have zero regrets (besides maybe not buying more food lol) They make the food fresh when you order; so it's not just sitting in a display fridge. Today was my first visit. I went on a group dog walk nearby hosted by AJ's Dog Bakery and then we all headed over to Onto Coffee. I like matcha lattes but I don't like sweet drinks. I asked the cashier for recommendations and he originally suggested a banana matcha latte but I don't like banana flavored things. His next suggestion was the Hojicha latte, 1/2 sweet I think. I went with that and ordered the chicken katsu sando. And my pup got a Pupcup! Everything was so good. I loved the sando and the hojicha latte tasted like earthy but almost chocolately. Honestly the best Ube latte I have ever had! Perfectly sweet and creamy and full of Ube flavor. The sandos were also good - we had the special miso chicken as well as the spicy chicken katsu. Came back twice within a month because the first visit found ourselves with nowhere to sit. Yep, it was that busy. Since there were four of us and at lunch time, we went somewhere else to eat. Then we came back for a warm cup of joe. All of us ordered the Black Sesame Latte because you don't find it anywhere! And it didn't disappoint. I'd like to think mine with oat milk was the best, but I also didn't try my friends. Judging from how happy they looked with the drink in their hand appreciating the filled to the brim latte with art, they're sold. Second time one of my friends and I arrived earlier for lunch and there was one table available! I asked for the Gui Hua latte with oatmilk this time and it's just as good, the perfect size, perfect warmth, and the perfect sweetness. My friend raved about her mocha too. She also got the Chicken Katsu Sando and said it was very tasty. I didn't want anything spicy or fried so I opted for the Egg Salad and Spam Sando. The filling was delicious but I didn't care for the bread. It reminds me nothing of the Japanese Milk Bread. My friends Chicken Katsu Sando had thinner looking bread, I think it's because they pan fried the toast a little, so it looked less doughy and dry. I love this place, I wish it was closer to me. The coffee and tea are amazing. I got the Gui Hua Latte which had Osmanthus creating this beautiful floral flavor in the coffee that was light, the coffee flavor is still there too and they balanced each other well. I got the the regular egg Sando and it was really good, the bread was very soft. It was pretty busy when I went and it was difficult to find seating but the service was good. I just love a Japanese sandwich, and honestly, I don't think anyone does it better than Onto Coffee. They've been killing it at pop-ups and their ghost kitchen , and now they have their own brick-and-mortar in Belmar and it's perfect. Their drinks? Absolute 12/10. I had the iced ube latte (creamy and dreamy), the black sesame matcha latte (earthy and energizing), and even coconut water topped with ube cream. All so good. The food is equally fantastic -- the spicy chicken katsu sando and ube strawberry sando are my favorites, but don't sleep on the mayo tuna onigiri. They're also now partnering with Black Box Bakery, so you can grab a pastry like their flaky strawberry croissant alongside your coffee. Such a good combo. And, Jessie and Jason (the owners) are some of the kindest people you'll meet. Their passion shines through in everything they do, and it makes supporting them even easier. This was $8 without tip. Yikes Shoutout to Spencer and Prim for always getting me right but a lot of the staff are just plain rude. I'm not a believer in service workers always needing to be super jovial or whatever, but it's a little much. Back to the quality: I've waited over 20 minutes for a sando here during relatively calm hours. Most of the time my matcha tastes like straight milk and has clumps. It's not hard to rinse your chasen between uses. A couple times I've even had plastic shards at the bottom of my drink. Even if the matcha were passable, charging $8 is absolutely absurd given the size of the cups. I only go here because I live close and I like the ambience. I got the black sesame coffee and was pretty disappointed by how muted the black sesame flavor was. It was completely overpowered by the coffee, which didn't sway me either way. Stopped by Onto Coffee on a total whim while my Tessie was juicing up, and honestly, Belmar had me feeling spiritually renewed. One of the baristas was literally the sweetest human alive. I hit them with the classic "I want something energizing but like... don't let my blood sugar skyrocket pls," and they guided me with the gentle wisdom of a caffeinated guardian angel. Ended up with the Vienna Coffee. It was okay, my taste buds were waiting for a bit more flavor pow but maybe it was because I told them about my sugar monitoring and I could tell they put their whole barista heart into it, so points for effort and the consideration. Also grabbed the tuna mayo onigiri because why not multitask and hit my protein goals while having an identity crisis in a coffee shop? It was classic, plump, and absolutely did what it needed to do. Onto Coffee is a ghost kitchen inside the Mile High Food Club. It's walk-up or order ahead online via the Mile High Food Club website and is an Asian-owned small business. We tried it today for the first time and had the Ube-Strawberry Sando, the Mala Chicken Katsu Sando and a Matcha Espresso Latte. First, the Mala Chicken Sando was our favourite. A little salty but went great with the shredded cabbage. It's actually not very spicy or numbing at all so good for everyone to enjoy. The Matcha Cloud Espresso Latte was thick with barista-style oatmilk, my favourite. I could not really taste the matcha to be honest but the coffee was good and seemed strong. The Ube-Strawberry Sando tasted delicious and the ube came through however we waited a bit too long to eat it. The texture is better if eaten quickly. Of all the things that I got most excited about, it was the packaging, ha! I was really impressed in that the takeaway bag looks reusable, lined with mylar inside to help maintain temperature. The latte cup sat in a special cardboard box and the drink had a tab to close it so it wouldn't spill during the short ride home. I can tell they thought a lot about the packaging and they did very well. Overall, we enjoyed and would come back to try the Egg Salad Sando and the Black Sesame and Guiha lattes later. read more

I didn't quite put 2 and 2 together to realize that Onto Coffee is part of Mile High Food Club, a restaurant co-op that is a ghost kitchen. I showed up looking for a cute new coffee shop to do some work in and was a bit disappointed. Nevertheless, I used the kiosk to order a Mile High Asian Food Week special of a drink + sando for $16. I got the iced ube latte with oat milk and the spicy chicken katsu sando. I don't have any notes on the iced ube latte - it tasted pretty standard and tasty to me. As for the spicy chicken katsu sando, my bread was a little smushed/soggy by the time I got home to eat it. I don't remember this sando being spicy, but I did think the flavors were really well done! Overall, the combo was delicious and filling! It was a perfect lunch meal for me. Even though I ordered at the location, it wasn't quite clear when my order was completed and ready for pick up. I don't think I got a locker or barcode receipt and I ended up standing there for a while even though my order was completed. I do wish this were its own stand-alone coffee shop because I know it would be so cute, and I get that it probably doesn't make sense for the business! I was greeted right away and decided on and iced Ube Latte (less sugar) and it was made quickly. My colleague decided on a latte and enjoyed her beverage as well. A nice coffee shop with good Japanese sandwiches! I tried the egg salad, and the bread was perfect. Soft and slightly sweet, it tasted very fresh. I didn't love the egg salad filling and felt it needed more flavor. Tokyo Premium Bakery still has the best egg salad sandwiches in my opinion, but these were decent. I came on a Thursday afternoon. Despite letting the barista know it was my first time, the barista's service ultimately left a poor overall impression of my experience. Since syrups weren't listed on the menu, I asked the barista what options were available and if she had any recommendations. The responses I received felt dismissive rather than helpful, and I didn't feel guided through the ordering process as a new customer. To add on, in-between my questions, she and two other baristas were whispering and snickering, which made the experience even more uncomfortable. Chicken katsu sando was awesome. Made fresh and great flavors. Definitely recommend trying one. Onigiri was horrible as it was smashed, wrapped and set on the counter. Rice was mushy and had zero flavor. Definitely do not recommend trying one of those. Drinks sounded good but only have non-dairy milks and whole milk so did not order anything. Need more seating and inside needs a good cleaning. Service is meh, unfriendly, and non-interactive. If you're near, try it, but there is also a different boba tea shop and a sandwich shop right around the corner. read more

Ill list my order and the pros and cons Price $40 w/o tip 4 items. Hongkong latte- espresso is good smooth and strong. Flavoring was too light handed, cant really taste the tea or condensed milk. It wasnt even slightly sweet. Now i dont like overly sweet lattes but this was almost zero sweetness, you have the option to add vanilla but i really think the condense milk portion is off and could use a tweak. Vienna coffee, same good espresso, smidge sweeter because the cocoa cream. Underwhelming still in flavor. Egg sando fluffy SOFT shokupan (with crust unfortunately but probably the softest japanese bread in the area), chunks of eggs but the yolk is too grainy so they over boiled. I couldnt tell if they used kewpie which im assuming not. It was pretty overpowered by mustard. *Regular strawberry sando* same fluffy SOFT Shokupan, Strawberries throughout sandwich and they are sweet and ripe. The fluff isnt too sweet. Amazing coffee! The flavors were rich and not overly sweet. We tried the Vienna and the Black Sesame latte; both were delicious and fragrant. The sandos (strawberry and mala chicken) were also tasty. My friend and I decided to visit this place after visiting once awhile back, we wanted to give it a second chance since the first experience didn't leave a good impression on us. After coming back and looking at others experiences, nothing has changed. We walked in and as I ordered, I guess I wasn't quick to clarify what exactly I needed in my order. A barista with glasses who was checking me out, asked a question to clarify what exactly I needed, she asked in a very blunt and annoyed tone. I paid no attention to this cause maybe she was tired and ready to go home. Once me and my friend finished ordering, other baristas were working on drinks and calling out names for orders. My friend noticed my drink on the counter and said that my drink was almost ready, I waited around longer and occasionally kept looking up to see my drink still just sitting there. I was in an awkward position not knowing if it they were doing finishing touches or if they just refused to call out my name because they didnt want to try pronouncing it. I ordered a sando and the only man working there called out my name for that (thank you for attempting and actually doing so), so i stood up and grabbed my sando but i was still unsure if i was good to grab my drink yet. They ended up calling my friend shortly after and that is when I asked if my drink was done, when I asked I just got looked at and stared as if I was a fish walking on legs. My friend noticed the weird energy there too. Ultimately this place gives very clicky weird vibes, the workers seem to be on the younger side and just very moody. The drinks were alright, you could honestly find better drinks elsewhere that isnt overpriced. The bread on the sando was very tough and almost tasted like it had been left out for awhile. I've been looking forward to trying this place for months and even drove 2 1/2 hours after hearing great reviews. I walk in to the counter and the girl working it just gives me a dead stare and doesn't welcome us and says nothing it was uncomfortable and awkward and obviously completely inconvenienced we were there.
