Here's the short version: Onyx is great, Ben is the man, I paid less than I expected to, and this is easily the best suit I've ever owned. Getting ready to go to a wedding for the first time since the pandemic, I realized every "nice" piece of clothing in my closet no longer fit (hell, half of it never did), and looked cheap. For the first time in ages, I wanted to impress. And I really meant to get out to a tailor with months to go before the wedding... but life kept getting in the way. Before I knew it, I had 3 weeks to go and no suit to wear. I found Onyx online, gave them a call, and had Ben out at my house the next night. He had no problem coming out after the kids were in bed, came with samples and photos ready to go, and helped me do the thing I hate most: shop for clothes. And honest to god, I had a good time doing it. Less than 2 weeks later, Ben was back with a custom made suit and shirt, and it's the best I've looked in ages--maybe ever. I feel good, I feel like me, I never once felt lost or in over my head, and I look awesome. Is it the most expensive thing in my closet? Yeah. Sure it is. TL;DR Good suit, great service. First let's get some terminology out of the way. If you're looking for full bespoke, the kind you see in the movies where they're basically putting the suit together on you, this isn't that. This is more like made-to-measure. You'll get measured, then the suit will be made, then you get back a finished suit. There's no in-between fittings. If you're like me and you did your research, you'll know there's a good amount of choices out there for made-to-measure. What you're getting with Onyx is a good quality suit, but more importantly you get Ben. He's very dedicated and passionate about this business and goes to great lengths for his clients. If you're at all uncertain about suits and all the options that go into a custom one, Ben will take the time to guide you through the process. Tip: Go try out some off the rack suits somewhere to get a general idea of what color you want. You may have an idea of what color you want already, but you might be surprised when you actually try it against your skin. The fabric swatches Ben will show you are not large, so it really helps to already have a general idea of the color category you want. I ended up going with a really deep charcoal grey suit with a fine herringbone pattern. I also got a white dress shirt with purple contrast trim. Both turned out really well with incredible textures. The only issue I had was with the dress shirt cuff. I chose to go without my initials on the cuff, but the shirt was mistakenly made with them on there. Ben fixed this issue by getting a new cuff made, without the initials, and right now we are in the process of having the cuff swapped out at a tailor. There are two things I would change on the suit if I were to do it again: 1) The jacket collar doesn't quite fit as well as I would like. There is a small gap between the suit jacket collar and my dress shirt collar. It isn't big, but isn't perfect either. 2) I would inquire about getting higher arm holes on the suit jacket. I completely forgot to ask Ben about this during our measurement session. You can google what "higher arm hole" is, but basically the hole you put your arm through rides up closer to your armpit, versus lower down the side. I enjoy higher arm holes because they allow for better mobility when raising your arms. With normal arm holes, if you raise your arms up even close to parallel with the ground, the whole jacket raises too. The only downside I can think of with higher arm holes is that it might make putting the jacket on and taking it off a bit more difficult. As for logistics, the turnaround time was amazing. I needed this suit in September and I believe I procrastinated until about one month away from my event. Ben was able to see me quickly and I had the suit in my hands within 3 weeks. read more
