My wife and I were on our way to the IAIA museum and we stopped in Onyx just to have a look around. We were met by Mario and Paul, who are two of the nicest people I've ever met. Onyx has an incredible selection of Native jewelry. We ended up purchasing a ring for me that day and came back the next day to pick up a bracelet. Both purchases were effortless, and the prices were very affordable. We live in New Mexico. Often times, jewelry stores on the Plaza are full of pieces that are popular with the tourist crowd, but not many local artists. I can not say enough about Mario and his beautiful shop. Mario spent extra time with me and my sister explaining all the different types of turquoise, the different types of silver work and showing us all the different artists that do the most beautiful jewelry work. He was able to send my personal bracelet off to be repaired and had it back to me before I left town. We had a great time shopping at his gallery! This is my go-to for any and all jewelry. Mario, his wife, son, and staff are exceptional professionals and they treat everyone like royalty. I have come in with a photo of a piece I'm looking for and Mario is incredible at finding them because he has developed (not surprisingly) a wonderful relationship and network with many, many world-class jewelers. For example, I saw a sand-cast bracelet in an ad for Indian Market and brought it to Mario. He told me it may be difficult to find one, but 2 weeks later he emailed me that he had found a nearly identical one! Mario has three reviews so far since 2018 and that is way too few for a shop such as Onyx for Jewelry and other accessories. I have shopped in the Jewelry district of NYC and have seen the best there. But for the items that Onyx specializes in, primarily southwest and others, Mario knows his stuff. He collects terrific pieces and one of a kind items as well. We bought a beautiful hummingbird necklace with nice stones in it. Quality was terrific and if Mario wants a sale, he will work with you. (See humorous pic as he also has a sense of humor). Next time you are in the Santa Fe area stop by and see Mario at Onyx and just capture with your eyes the intriguing items on display. Heck even if you are in Albuquerque it is worth the one hour drive. You will definitely find a piece you will want to take and wear. This shop is always one of our first (and often last) stops when we visit Santa Fe. Mario and his wife Neri make us feel like old friends whenever we stop in. Not only does the shop have a great atmosphere because the owners are so warm and welcoming, but there are many fine pieces of jewelry here for both men and women, from turquoise and silver items by Native artists to fine gemstone pieces and even engagement rings.
