We found ourselves strolling 4th Ave around 6:30pm on a Monday evening with the intention of spontaneously grabbing a bite. Despite some key sports events going on (World Cup U.S. round of 16) this once bustling shopping/dining avenue was eerily quiet. Indeed, we both couldn't help but notice the number of venues that were permanently closed and the degree to which nearly every window (occupied or closed) had etched or soaped graffiti all over it. One block off of 4th Ave (on 6th St) we saw Opas Grill (not to be confused with "Opa's Best Greek" at Broadway/Swan!) and headed in. Two small screens above the corner bar area were displaying the soccer game. Of the roughly 16 tables between the two dining rooms only three were occupied. We were greeted promptly and tended to graciously. She got the Dinner Gyro Wrap with the salad side ($15) and I got the Dinner Gyro Salad ($16). They arrived in less than 10 minutes with both protein portions of decent size and piping hot. The salads were fresh/crisp with no wilted anything and dressings were on the side, as requested. Note: the wrap was a bit sloppy due to juices but good flavors for both entrees and we polished them off. The lone disappointment was the Honey Old Fashioned cocktail (average) and in hindsight we should have tried one of their Mastiha drinks (a deliciously unique liquor that's endemic to Greece). The entrance is kind of hidden/recessed about 25 feet deep from the sidewalk. Bonus, there's a small private parking lot (free) that's right beside the building. I tried Opa for the first time last week during lunch and liked it so much that I came back again over the weekend. It's located on 4th Ave and has both an outdoor patio and indoor seating. On my first visit, I ordered the falafel wrap with fries and it was delicious. When I came back, I tried the gyro wrap which was really good too but I might stick with the falafel wrap next time because it was packed with flavor. The service was great! Everything came out quickly and they bring out a plate of pita bread with hummus and tzatziki sauce while you wait. There's plenty of seating inside and the space is decorated with pictures of Greece, which adds a nice touch to the atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're in the mood for Greek food. read more

Was craving some Greek food and decided to check out Opa's. So glad I did! Located next to Lindy's on 4th, this small Greek restaurant is delicious. They provide free pita, cucumbers, and humus while you decide what you want to eat. I ordered the Gyro with feta and a side of Greek fries. Everything about the dish was tasty. While entering, we were asked if we would like a table or a booth. The booth seat was not thoroughly cleaned as there was food on the seat which was my first impression. The food is fairly priced. This is our favorite Greek Restaurant. We live in the valley so we dont get there often. Anytime we are near Tucson, and by near i mean within an hour drive, we have to go. They have the best gyros and they are huge. Their Greek fries and taboule are great. They give you a complimentary hummus plate with veggies and pita while waiting for your meals. Even time we bring friends they live it and say they understand now why we are willing to drive do far to go. We once brought friends while camping at Picacho Peak State Park. Service is friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is casual and welcoming. Their Baklava is the best. I never have room for dessert but I always take baklava home. read more

I went here for lunch for the first time yesterday with a friend. I love that they bring out the pita bread with cucumbers and tzatziki sauce while you peruse the menu. It also had another sauce and both were reeeeeeaally good! I'm talking better than any I've had. Just flavorful and delicious! I even got some to go! The pita bread was kind of dry but it's okay. My friend also ordered baba ghanoush, which I did not try, but she gave me some of the pita bread, which were very different from the pita bread that came to the table prior. These ones were very soft. I ordered the spicy chicken wrap and it was okay. The spiciness I believe comes from the orange sauce that comes with it which had a heavy hot sauce flavor. The meat alone, as stated, was not spicy and though it carried many spices visibly, I felt the seasoning could be more plentiful for taste. The fries were perfect, though there could have been more. All in all though, I felt they gave a good portion for $14. The service was good and the interior was bigger than I would've imagined. Amazing, authentic food. Good, clean location. Huge portions. Fair prices. Quick service. In our party we tried a gyro and 2 chicken platters. All were amazing. The food is a little on the heavy side, as everything had oil or butter. But this also made it amazingly delicious. The meats of the gyro and chicken especially had perfect seasoning and were about as extremely far away from bland as one could get. In the chicken platter the rice was as fluffy as little clouds and well seasoned. The flavor is something I cannot describe, except to say it tasted like salt and herbs and butter. Lots of butter, haha. I got to taste the gyro and it was awesome, but it did look a bit on the heavy side. Looked totally worth it though! My only complaint here is the Greek salad which came as a side on the chicken platter. It was very meh, and had to eat around it. A massive raw pepper ring and lots of raw pieces topped the huge pile of lettuce with a generous portion of feta and tomato. Just a few olives and slices of cucumber. We went on Black Friday and it was not that crowded, but the parking lot was packed so I parked down the street in the metered parking and headed in. Very friendly staff, seated promptly, and given a plate with pitas and hummus while we waited. Yum, large, delicious plate of food to tide us over while we looked at the large lunch and dinner menus. I ordered the Chicken Souvlaki pita and had them add Feta, which they did no problem. Large and delicious and it came with some golden crispy tasty French fries. Less than $13, filling, and scrumptious. The server checked on us a few times and even brought more water without us asking. Nice touch and thoughtful. I would definitely recommend sitting outside if the weather is nice. We were given a complimentary plate of pita bread, cucumbers, hummus, and tzatziki. All of it was fresh and delicious! I ordered the Chicken Souvlaki Kabob and my friend ordered the Chicken Souvlaki Pita Sandwich. The chicken was flavorful, and the salad had a great dressing with crisp vegetables. I ordered catering for 15 people a week in advance and it was all ready to go when I arrived at my designated pick up time. The food was delicious. The menu consisted of gyro meat, chicken, baba ganoush, hummus, rice, potatoes, tzatziki, salad, pita bread, with an extra order of baklava. The food was well packed and was still steamy hot when I got it back to the office. Everyone was happy with all the flavors. The gyro and chicken was seasoned well and then we assembled our plates and quietly ate - that should tell you how happy we all were. LOL The potatoes we received looked to me to just be boiled, I didn't see any seasoning, but the steam could have gotten rid of it. It's possible that I haven't eaten enough Greek baklava, but the baklava on this day was really dry. The honey was on top, but didn't seem to make it to any other layers. Minor glitches though. We felt stupid for never thinking about ordering here when we have a special event, but we're in the know now. If you want to have some good Greek food, Opas is where it's at. read more

Too bad..... I really liked the food at this place but had an issue with the restaurant. After washing my hands after using the restroom, I saw a man walk out of a stall (not away from a urinal, but out of a stall) and walk out of the restroom without washing his hands. I later saw him in the back working with the other cooks. After bringing this to the attention of my wait person, I asked to speak to the manager. Twenty minutes elapsed and no manager, so I asked again. Finally, the manager appeared. After telling him, what happened, he basically minimized/denied the incident occurred, saying it did not happen and said that person would never skip washing his hands after using the restroom. I did not pursue this so I paid the bill and left. Too bad, because I liked the food, but I can't "unsee" what I saw. Also, I'm not naive enough to think this doesn't occur elsewhere. My concern is if a manager is going to be lax with a potential health hazard that has been brought to his attention, it makes me wonder what else is "slipping through the cracks"- no pun intended. :( read more

My wife LOVES Greek food, so when we had to visit her brother in Tucson I went on Yelp to search for a gyro for her. Found Opa's, thought we'd try it. Very, very good, and extremely large portions. Not only that, the prices were reasonable, if not a bargain IMO. I had the gyro. It was HUGE and came with a free appetizer of hummus and pita bread. My entire lunch was only $9.95, which I consider a bargain. (Check the photo for proof!) The beef and lamb gyro tasted wonderful, and came with a choice of fries or a Greek salad. I don't know when we will be visiting Tucson again, but we will be having lunch at Opa's when we do. read more

My husband and I love the Opa's on Broadway but were closer to this location today. We stopped in for lunch during a day of shopping. As always, they brought us a complimentary hummus and tzatziki plate with pitas and cucumber. It's delicious. I ordered the feta and gyro pita with fries. He ordered the low carb gyro platter - it comes with beef/lamb rotisserie meat, tzatziki, grilled veggies, and a Greek salad. We both love good food and good service. He is pickier than I, by far. And neither of us can complain when we choose Opa's. It's very clean, quick and friendly service, amazing flavor/quality, and nice big portions. If I *had* to pick one thing for improvement, it'd be that I'd like to see more menu options. But maybe that's because we always go at lunch time. read more

Great Food and Cozy Courtyard On a recent visit to Opa's Best in Tucson, workers were wearing t-shirts announcing their new Tucson location called Opa's Grill on 4th Ave., so we tried it. The building looks like it was a car service center previously, but they have done a super job of remodeling the building with very current decor. We loved the small courtyard dining area between their building and the Mexican restaurant next door. There are umbrellas, bushes and trees along with shadows from the buildings that would provide cover from the often intense Arizona sun. They also have gas heaters in that area for cooler weather dining. Just as at Opa's Best, a complimentary starter plate (Meze) of hummus, tzatziki, cucumber and pita was brought to our table as soon as we sat down. They have a good selection of tap beers and a good tasting brewed iced tea. We started with the Octopus. Tender pieces of braised and grilled octopus with olive oil, oregano and red wine. A very large portion, tender and not at all rubbery. We both had the Classic Gyro Sandwich with Greek Salad. The gyro meat is outstanding, piled high on a soft pita and a refreshingly tangy tzatziki sauce. With the welcome platter and octopus, we ate very little of our sandwich and brought home enough for another dinner. The salad was excellent and they gladly brought me more feta cheese to add to my salad. We look forward to going there again. read more

We have family members who love Opa's, and this was our first time joining them there. After we were seated, our server brought waters for all and plates of fresh pita, Tzatziki, hummus, and sliced cucumber. After a few minutes to peruse the menu, we ordered Flaming saganaki, Baba Ganoush, and the salmon with Greek lemon potatoes and green beans. The flaming saganaki came out first, presented with the expected flair. It had a nice crunchy outside, smooth center, and perfect amount of lemon. Not long after finishing it, our entrees arrived. The Baba Ganoush was accompanied by more warm pita, tomatoes, and sliced cucumber. It was a very large portion, meaning that we got to enjoy yummy leftovers the next day. The salmon was cooked as ordered, and the ample serving of sides made it a very filling meal. The restaurant itself has ample indoor seating and a patio. The space has plenty of light, and there is free parking for the restaurant behind it. We will be back! read more
