Been wanting to upgrade the Wife's 21 JLU for a while. I started working on the front end a few weeks ago, I did the Yeti track bar and Tera flex ball Joints. Ordered a Metalcloak steering kit and then decided to let these guys do that and install a Mopar lift with some 35's, rims, spare tire rack, etc, etc... This was a pretty major amount of work. He sourced everything except the Steering kit, I supplied that. The estimate was off the final bill by less than 1 percent. This was my first ever Jeep build so I needed to rely on Tim's expertise and recommendations. Wife and I reviewed the parts and the plan with him and gave our approval about a week prior to drop off. Dropped the jeep off Tuesday evening and picked up Friday morning after it came back from Alignment. I have not been under it yet but from what I can see it looks great. The recommendations for the wheel tire combo with that lift were perfect. Wife still runs about 50 miles a day on the thruway so I was concerned about the ride quality at speed with the 35 inch tires but She says it handles about like one of her older TJ's. My original intent was to do all this work myself (except the alignment) but having them do it was a major stress relief. It was not cheap but considering the amount of work I felt the price was reasonable. Time will tell but right now we are both very pleased with the personal service, work done, and cost. I am a new Jeep owner and I am learning and loving the comradery of the Jeep community. I needed a catalytic converter and the repair shop couldn't find the piece so I googled the part number and found on it their site. I called and spoke with Jeff who has great customer service and I placed the order. Jeff emailed me later that night with my invoice and tracking number. I received the part in a 3 days and I spoke with Jeff once I received it to confirm I have the correct part. Jeff was very helpful and reviewed the pictures I emailed him and confirmed I had the right part. I called Jeff back because of an issue with the repair shop and Jeff provided me details about my warranty. I went to another repair shop and was told the converter was working fine and I needed a computer relearn because of the repair and that resolved my issue. This Was All Done Over 3 Years Ago. I Have Had Not One Problem With Any Work Done By Open Air Jeep. I Have Checked For Lose Bolts, Have Never Found Any, No Problems With The Wiring That Was Done. I cannot express how happy we are to have found Open Air Jeep. After backing into my daughter's Cherokee, I took my Wrangler to Tim for a couple of minor repairs (he easily could have told me that my bumper needed to be replaced, but instead fixed it quickly and at low cost). Since I was incredibly relieved at being treated so kindly and fairly, we decided to take the Cherokee to Open Air for the necessary body work. Tim quickly provided us with an estimate and was on the phone with us throughout the day answering further questions we had regarding tires, etc. The cost was very fair, the finished product was amazing (body work, new tires and painted rims) AND the vehicle was delivered back a day earlier than promised. Can I rate this business negative three? That's how I feel now. My first review was generous, at best. My wife said that she thought something was wrong with the suspension (she drives it every day), and I drove it and didn't notice anything. Then again, I'm a computer geek and not a gear-head. Our friend who IS a gear head started pointing out things he thought needed to be looked at just by driving it. When we got home, he crawled under the Jeep with a flashlight, and after he was done looking around and said to my wife - "Don't drive this. Period. It's unsafe." We pulled out the invoice, and then searched the internet for the install instructions for everything Open Air Jeeps installed. Downloaded and printed, our friend (who has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from General Motors Institute, and has been working on every car he's ever owned) crawled back under the Jeep and went to work. EVERY bolt that was touched by the proprietor of Open Air Jeeps was loose. One bracket from the lift kit was installed UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS. This bracket has caused rubbing on one of the tie rods. Our friend tightened everything up, and told us to take it to the local mechanic (ASE certified) with the instructions and have him go over everything this guy touched with a fine tooth comb. Bottom line - if you don't have the money to spend, have plenty of time to wait, and don't care about your safety - Open Air Jeeps is the place for you! Otherwise - go elsewhere. read more

I have spent the past 3 years doing a ground up restoration of my Jeep Scrambler. the Jeep has 1600 miles on the frame up, new odometer from when the Jeep first fired up and ran so they are actual miles since the restore. I have been a customer of OAJ for 2 years, and outside of a few minor things that needed to be tightened up or redone the service and price was pretty good. They have been able to help me out on prpojects I did not have time for or did not have the capability to complete myself. However, recently mechanical work has become sub-par and not to be trusted. Every repair or upgrade that has been completed has had to be brought back for repair. The first was a rear axle swap to solid one-piece axles. After 700 miles the splines stripped with only light commuting and highway miles. The diagnosis I was given was a bad axle and another $800 dollars to have the axle rebuilt.......again! brand new Superioer one-piece axle, 700 miles, no off-roading and a spline failure???? Really?? I next had an auto tranny installed in my CJ by OAJ, due to a leg injury, and although the install went pretty good, OAJ's finish work and attention to detail was horrible!! After putting in the tranny I still had oil leaks which I asked them to isolate and repair. After being told the Jeep was "dry", I drove it home and I still had the same oil leaks. Although the owner was very interested in getting it right and offered to do whatever it took to make me satisfied, I kept finding things wrong and parts missing off my Jeep, including a bolt missing from my oil pan. The mecahnics failed to put protective mats or towels on the fenders and scratched a pretty nice paint job; when the B&M floor shifter was installed they did not cover the hole in the floor panel with a rubber gasket or cover boot allowing road water from the next rain storm to enter the cab and soak my carpets and floor. The floor plate was not properly refastened and the screws stripped, leaving a 1/4" gap between the plate and the floor allowing for heated air from tranny and exhaust to enter cab from below and enter from the previously mentioned hole, making it extremely hot even with windows open. The mechanic told me that my center console would not fit back in Jeep, it went in fine when I reinstalled it in 10 min by lining up the holes. Mechanic told me I would need to buy a neutral safety switch and he would have to custom wire the reverse light in the brand new B&M floor shifter. When I read the PDF directions on-line for the shifter it showed that the connections and NSS were already built into the shifter, so it is obvious he did not read the directions. I had to call back and point this out. Wires were left exposed and bundled with a zip tie to the frame from the tranny install with no protective covering, only connected by wire twist and electric tape instead of crimp connectors or heat shrink wrap. They did replace a warrantied battery and alternator which was great, but they failed to reinstall the battery hold down and it was missing and I had to ask for it back. After a day of driving the Jeep, a wire fell off the new alternator that was installed, my battery drained and I had no lights or gauges or wipers during a rain storm. I had to recharge my new battery and fix the wire myself. The very next day my speedometer cable snapped (new part 1600 miles) frayed at the transfer case. It was improperly reinstalled in the transfer case after the tranny install. I have been in almost daily contact with the owner and he has promised to make it right, but as you can see there is a pattern of poor workmanship and lack of attention to detail. He stated that he trusted his mechanics and he even verified some ofthe work, yet it was still faulty when I got my Jeep back. If they are missing bolts in an install or not taking the time to read directions for installing parts or taking the time to put your Jeep back together they way it was when you left it there, what else are they not doling correctly? Each incident the owner was very cordial, but had an excuse, and backed his mechanics, then just wanted to make it right. Thank God there were no extra charges!!! My recommendation is to go elsewhere. These guys are shadetree mechanics and are not ASCE certified mechaincs. You will be better served going to ETA or Phantomworks and have the work done the first time correctly, even if at slightly higher cost. The OAJ guys may be cool to talk with, and the shop looks busy and they know what they are doing, but with my latest experience and over $2000 in faulty labor and the not having my jeep for about 2 months, their work cannot be trusted.....PERIOD!!!!! read more

A VERY HEARTY THANK YOU TO THE TEAM AT OAJ! I am a decent backyard mechanic but some jobs I don't have the time nor patience to tackle. My brakes last year didn't pass inspection and recently, my carb was not right. I brought in my CJ8 because she was running like crap and I had lost faith in her reliability. Although they were all taking a "working lunch break," (the place was packed with beautiful Jeeps) the OAJ team all descended on my pride and joy. Within minutes they had discovered the culprit and had her running 100 percent better. I decided to have the carb overhauled since it most likely had not been done in 20 years plus. (1984 CJ8) I left the jeep with a list of "squawks" and I got a call the next day explaining everything had been completed and that they had found a freeze plug leaking and repaired it. (That now explains the coolant on my garage floor and my inability to find were the heck it was coming from.) Bottom line: Thanks Gents! I have brought OAJ my Scrambler to you on two occasions now and you have fixed my issues in quickly and with honest and fair pricing both times. I will see you the next time my Mistress needs a "tune up" and I am busy with the "honey do list" at home or it is beyond my abilities. Cheers, By the way, this is my first time using "Yelp." I had a great experience with OAJ. They lifted my JKU, installed new tires/wheels and new rear bumper. Everything done on time and received value for the price, less expensive than others in the area. I had done extensive research on this issue and as most people with Jeeps know, the "death wobble" is pretty common in Jeeps, but the solutions aren't.
