While a bit tucked away, I've had nothing but great service each time I've come. Both in getting my truck (2005 F-150) serviced as well as my wife's Subaru, we've received nothing but quality work, friendly and honest service, and a reasonable price. This automotive shop is literally 100 yards away from my workplace. I have several family members and friends that take their vehicles here for multiple reasons. I dropped my car off here for an oil change on a weekday. They had it ready in a couple hours. When I got home I realized they didn't place a reminder sticker on my windshield. I also saw that my car did not automatically reset the oil change life. I called and spoke with Brian. He was super helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable with me. He told me to stop by the next day & they would take care of everything. Well, he sure did. They actually ran out of stickers and he gladly placed one on the windshield for me. I went in for an oil change on a 1989 F 350 Diesel I had just purchased and ended up with a bill for $503.16 . I ask him to look at the truck while they were doing the oil change so I would no if there were any Unknown issues. The service manager was kind and stated in would be under $100.00. I bought it back that afternoon and it was to be ready the following morning. I called at noon to check on the truck , It was not ready. They had not even started on the oil change. I get a call later telling me the parking brake was stock and if they could try to get it to release the next morning. I get a call the next day stating they got one side to release and he was going to order some emergency brake cables because the ones on the truck are old. Yes, the truck is 31 years old. I highly recommend this auto-repair shop! I noticed an anti-freeze leak - coming from the back of the engine near a hose (uh oh - NOT GOOD). So, on the internet I went - to try to figure out what the problem could be. You NEVER EVER want to go into ANY repair shop BLIND. You HAVE to do some research & sound like you at least have HALF a CLUE. Plus, from my experience, it helps to try to develop a basic rapport & establish a personal connection w/anyone you choose to do business with - otherwise you might come off as just another name and number (if you will) - but I digress. Meanwhile, my wife's sense of urgency kicked in & insisted that we find a place ASAP (in case a smaller problem turns into a bigger problem). Luckily, she remembered that one of her co-workers had been singing high praises about a trustworthy auto-repair shop in Chesapeake (B&W) that does good work. I did call a couple other places first - but none of them seemed to KNOW what the problem could be. So, then I called B&W & spoke to "Bobby" (I guess one of the owners). I described the problem - as best I could & he said (w/confidence) - that it sounded like the problem is a "cracked intake manifold" (common for our year's '98 Ford Mustang 4.6L GT). On a side note: it seems that Ford had to decided to use plastic - when they should've used metal. When they saw their intake manifolds began failing, they learned from the mistake & redesigned them w/METAL (instead of plastic) - to prevent CRACKING - & Bobby told us it comes w/a limited lifetime warranty - but he'd never had to go back in and re-replace one. Once the newer one is put in, you should be golden. So, Bobby fixed us up with a new "intake manifold" at a price we thought was fair - especially considering the complexity of the job & all the time/labor involved. I have to say - the Mustang is now purring like a kitten & is running better than it has - in YEARS! It did take them a few days to complete the job, but Bobby told me it was taking them longer than he'd anticipated. It's probably wishful thinking, but I'm wondering if it took them longer because they spent a little extra time in making sure the job was done right the first time - plus they may have made a few other minor adjustments to make sure she was "dialed in"... That's just my guess, but I could be wrong. It might just be that new antifreeze & a new intake manifold does wonders for an 18 year old car? Who knows! I'm not kidding though - whatever they did - I'm impressed (knock on wood) - cuz she's running like a dream now. Finding a GOOD place to do a GOOD JOB w/any kind of work you need done can often certainly be a challenge - but if you put yourself in their shoes - how often do they see people who have NO CLUE about what they need done? You only get taken advantage of if you ALLOW yourself to be taken advantage of. It's YOUR responsibility to do SOME research & NOT go in BLIND. You have to at least pretend like you have HALF a clue of what's going on - otherwise, you risk sounding like a clueless idiot - and that's when people are taken advantage of - but I digress yet AGAIN. B&W may have taken a bit longer than we expected - but as long as the job is done right the first time - I don't care if it takes a bit longer. I don't want them to throw it together if they feel rushed! I'd rather they take their time & do a good job & fix the problem ONCE - so we don't have to come BACK & play cat and mouse a few days later. We've been driving the car for about a week & I still cannot believe the difference. It cost us some money, but I feel like B&W took care of us. When we picked it up, my wife & I went inside & chatted w/them for a few minutes. They all were very friendly & down to earth - good folks. They showed us our old intake manifold & where the crack was & we were happy it wasn't a blown engine - or some other problem not worth fixing. Nobody wants to hear that their car needs a new intake manifold (it's not an inexpensive fix). However, we're counting our blessings that we didn't have to get rid of the car over a bigger problem. So, a big "thank you" to Bobby & his team. We won't hesitate to recommend B&W to others. read more

$42 for a (5qt) oil change. Yikes! $27 of labor...? The story: I went in for a state inspection and oil change. I was told it would be $42 for both. I waited in the building, when it was done, it came out to $58. The guy I talked to left for lunch, so someone else explained that it must have been $16 for the state inspection. I asked for the outrageous price, he blamed it on the high oil costs, but the receipt clearly showed 27$ on labor and only 15$ on the oil. I wonder how many other businesses abuse the current state of the economy to increase profit? read more

I have been using B&W since I've been driving, so about 10 years. My dad went there and always recommended them. I usually do my own work, but if there is something I can't do, I take it to them. It's hard to find honest shops, but this is one. I've had several shops lie about parts on an inspection, and their story falls flat when I ask them to show me what's wrong. B&W has not only never pulled this stunt, but tightened up an upper control arm that I had replaced but apparently didn't tighten enough, in order for me to pass inspection. He showed me what I did wrong, and only charged me the $1 re-inspection fee, since it failed the first time for that part. They have great service, and respectable prices. I change my own oil so I have no idea what they charge, but do know Juffy Lube can run $30-50 depending on the vehicle and type of oil. MY AC has not been working, so I will be taking my VW there this week. read more

So I bring my car in to Betterton & Whitlow to have the front bumper the blinkers and the air-conditioning and some other minor things fixed. It takes them about a month to get everything "fixed". So I spend somewhere around $2400 and I get my car back with the new bumper I brought to them cracked. one of the blinkers were chipped off. The headlights that I brought in for them to put in, one of them was bent really far to the side. And when I brought this up to the owner and asked him for my money back, or for him to fix them, he proceeded to slam my car hood shut saying that he's "tired of working on this piece of junk" (which shows me they don't care at all about your vehicles) it was pretty ridiculous to spend 2000+ dollars and wait a whole month when I just took it to executive collision center, next door and they did it in a week. I've been here going on 2 hrs still waiting to be serviced. Had I known it would be more than 2 hrs before i got serviced I would have went to the dealership up the street. Highly disappointed. Where do I start? This is a long one. I initially went to this place to get an inspection. Seem like really nice people there, so I took one of my vehicles there for repair. A day goes by...nothing. 2 days goes by...nothing. I had to call them to find out what was going on with my car. Talked to one of them and he explained they were short handed...like almost everyone right now, so I understood. Paid $475 for repairs. I then take a different car for inspection...cool. no problem. I take that car back for repair. A week goes by...no call. I didn't mind because its a project car, not something I drive everyday. Another week goes by and I have to call them for an update. Long story short. They tell me that the car is ready and it'll be $500. HUH? Noone every called me to tell me what was wrong with the car, let alone how much it would cost to fix. Absolutely not...do whatever you have to do to erase the work you've done...I'M NOT PAYING $500. How do you even know i can afford that. I have mechanic friends that don't have the equipment like they do. Im sure I can get one of them to fix it cheaper. I wanted to know what was wrong with it. So the mechanic admitted he never discussed fixing the car with me. We worked out a lesser charge $300. I go and pick up the car...I guess this is the owner. He was rude...yelled at me "why did you bring it, if you didn't want it fixed?". Threw the pen and receipt at me...threw my keys at me! Yes, threw them! I have NEVER seen anything like that in my 49 year old life. I had to get out of there before this old man needed to call the police. I was in disbelief. Very disappointed. Our city uses this location to work on city cars and we figured we would give them more business personally. Took our truck to be looked at to fix a few things we were concerned about for the service guys to break it some more. We understand individuals are inexperienced but it would be nice for the business to own up to their errors and fix what they broke and we would have still stayed with them to finish what we wanted. But clearly, they were not aware our truck had two keys. One to open the door and one to put in the ignition. Unfortunately, someone forced the incorrect key into the ignition that has now caused the ignition to no longer function. Thanks guys! Glad our city can serve you. read more

Had a issue 3-4 years ago, Was going to other service repair shop closer to my home (Bells Mill Auto). Had taken my 99 ford in for inspection and in a short time, they came and said, I needed a lower right ball joint. I had it replaced there for 300 and change. Later that week, I took my wife's 91 Mazda miatta in which we only drove on Sundays. It had only been driven a few times since last inspection and when I took it in, they said in under 5 minutes, I needed a lower right ball joint!!!! I said what, is that the flavor of the month? I told them to put a rejection on it and I was leaving. I took the car to (B&W) and met up with Bob. He was familiar with the car, as I had it serviced there before. I explained what had happened and he pulled it into his bay (State Law) scrapped the rejection off (also State Law) and checked the right front ball joint. He looked at me and said, you do not need a new ball joint! I had them immediately inspect it. Due to sitting, the tires were cracking and he suggested replacing them but wasn't withholding the inspection if I did not replace them. I elected to replace the tires for safety and he found some tires and had them there within the hour and were all mounted and balanced and back on the car within 30 mins of arriving. I will always go there, they are fair and kind. Sometimes there is a long wait but that is to be expected, especially if it's the end or first of the month or certain times of the season. P.S. if you ever go in to any shop for repair and feel that they are not being truthful, take your car to the nearest State Police Barrix tell them what happened and what you were told and let them inspect it. If they find you do not need a certain repair that a shop told you you did need, they will go and audit them and can pull their inspection license. (Always watch your car while it is in the bay no matter what your having done to it. You'd be amazed what you'll catch some places trying to do and telling you you need. I once caught a repair shop taking out my clean air filter and swapping it with a dirty one and then telling me, I need a new one. read more

Twice I've been to this shop with some difficult problems to solve. Bobby and his crew seem to enjoy getting to the root of the issue, without price gouging. They charge fairly and don't sneak in additional charges just to make a buck. Recently I took a vehicle in that diagnosed over the phone as a brake issue. After several hours researching, head scratching and digging, they thoroughly explained my problem (rear end locking up) and even gave some pointers to help me make the most informed decision possible. They were even patient enough to listen to my questions and input into the situation. I find that rare in a mechanic's shop. I'm also quite sure they put several more hours into troubleshooting than he ended up charging me for, especially since I didn't end up having the vehicle repaired. Betterton and Whitlow is definitely my shop of choice from here on out. read more

The customer service needs improvement. I think the other issue is that they don't tell you everything before you leave your car there, and that when you spend several hundred dollars (more than a car payment) the work needs to be done correctly the first time. read more
