I recently brought my car to Japanese Auto Masters and had a very disappointing experience. It took them over 6 hours just to provide me with a report on the issue. When the quote finally came back, the parts they recommended were marked up 100% -- a part I could source for around $500 was quoted at $1,000 through them. I asked if they would consider working with customer-provided parts if I waived any warranty on those parts and only had them warranty the labor. They said no, citing company policy. I understand that many shops have this rule, but with a markup this extreme, it felt unreasonable. I left without having the work done. If you're considering this shop, just be prepared for very long waits and potentially significant markups on parts. read more

I have taken my 2005 Subaru Baja to Japanese Auto Masters for about 5 years now. I have been consistently impressed with their courtesy, professionalism, and integrity. They have kept me informed of my vehicle's needs without pressing me on any service. With state inspections, they've told me of issues that will need to be fixed in order to pass the next year, allowing me a full year to take care of things. If I ask to have a service that is not necessary, they will inform me that it is not needed. My vehicle has over 200,000 miles on it. Japanese Auto Masters has helped me to keep it running reliably. Called just to get an idea how much a diagnostic would be after being referred. Explained my problem of a vibration in my steering wheel on the highway at highway speeds mainly over 70. Was told they wouldn't be able to isolate the problem and wouldn't put their technicians driving records on the line. I understand that since the highways locally speed limit is 55. But I often commute on highways that the speed limit is 70, therefore have to find somewhere that can solve this issue. Have been using JAM for awhile and have friends that have used them for years. Most recent visit was on a Friday for a noise from the engine compartment that they diagnosed as needing a water pump for $1900. I was told by Dana they did not have the parts and would start working on it Monday. On Saturday I checked two Toyota dealers and both quoted $850ish. I left messages with JAM to call me Monday before starting work. At 745 Monday I called and was told work was done. I asked them to double check the quote as they were more than double the dealership quote. I was told by Dana her manager verified the quote was accurate and offered a 10% coupon. I'll never take my car back. If you take your vehicle there get another quote before authorizing them to start. read more

Thanks to both Joe, the Service Advisor & Phillip, the mechanic who did my maintenance and replaced the starter on my '12 Honda Civic Sedan. Phillip did a marvelous job putting in the new OE (Original Equipment) Starter on my vehicle; it sounds even better now when I start up the ignition. I originally was gonna drive to my appointment today on 5/24/24, but instead did an early bird drop off at Japanese Auto Masters on the day before. It was because my vehicle had to get towed by a towing company dispatched by State Farm due to the starter going out after fueling up at an Exxon Gas Station. I wanted to update my review of JAM because it has been a while. Since I wrote my initial review, our vehicle situation has changed. My beloved Odyssey was totaled in a wreck. The Prius, once my husband's daily driver, has been passed down to our daughter. To say that making sure the Prius is maintained in top shape is important to us is a vast understatement. I don't want my daughter stranded on the highway. A car breakdown is a hugely dangerous situation for a young woman. Our Odyssey was replaced with a newer CRV. We just took it to JAM for an oil change and inspection. Both cars are taken only to JAM, for everything. They are so trustworthy and thorough with the maintenance of our vehicles. After recently moving to Virginia Beach, we found Japanese Auto Masters (JAM) after my husband's 14 year old Honda Pilot (240k) miles was having problems. They were able to get it back up & running in no time at a reasonable price. My Subaru was having transmission problems, so we took it in to get looked at. Not only did JAM diagnose the problems, they went further to check extended warranties on my car. They told me about the warranty Subaru was extending for just this issue. Advised that although my car was over the mileage limit that with a call to Subaru they just might extend it to cover despite the mileage. A few phone calls later, I can credit Japanese Auto Masters with saving me $5000+. Subaru covered the work!! I've used Japanese Auto Masters many times over the last 20 or so years. I can remember the old shop, the new shop and now they have their own building off of Holland Road which is just down the street from me now. They do great work and really know Japanese cars. They will work with you explaining what needs to be done and what it will cost. When I had an AC problem in my Mazda van they told me the truth - that the repair was such a hassle and costly that I should seriously consider not doing it. Anyways, I had got into a car accident and my tail light is cracked. Complication with both insurance so have not fixed yet. Brand new car too. I would've appreciate them telling me before hand that I shouldn't do the inspection yet since my tail light is cracked. That's a for sure not pass already. Instead they did everything, charged me and only gave 15 days to fix n come back to get a sticker. If not I will get charged for another inspection. I will go elsewhere for my second inspection. They could've gained a yearly loyal customer. But instead they rather only come up 16$. The type of auto place that will rip u off. read more

And even if you didnt get you car inspected there, it still would not pass, and you were STILL going to have to get a state inspection and a new tail light. (failing an inspection has NOTHING to do with the auto shop and everything to do with your vehicle and va state law) They charged you because that's the cost for the inspection at any inspection station. Secondly, they let you come back after the 15 day grace period to fix any issues and charge you a dollar, again, state law, not the auto shop. "They could've gained a yearly loyal customer. The type of auto place that will rip u off." - This auto dealer has every right under va law to fail your car for an inspection or they could lose their license, your cracked $20 - $40 tail light is not worth them losing years of auto shop service. I had some issues with my Acura but given that my car is 9 years old I was expecting a huge repair. After speaking with multiple repair shops and receiving quotes I went with Japanese Auto. What I needed done was the rack and pinion replaced and it was not cheap but by using the 10% online discount through the mobile app it definitely did help me. So upon calling Japanese Auto I spoke with Joe. He seemed very knowledgeable over the phone and the next day I decided to bring in my car. The staff there was very helpful and Joe went over all the charges that would be part of the invoice including the 10% discount for new customers. Although my car did take approximately 2 weeks to get repaired due to the part being backordered I have to say that they did a great job. Great experience both times I have been here. Dave is easy to talk to, doesn't mind lots of questions and is very personable and knowledgeable. I had my timing belt replaced and they replaced a few other assorted items, hoses and such, while they had the engine apart, smart repair technique if you ask me. Dave helped me prioritize my repair list and we have a schedule set up to address the remaining issues. My son has his learners permit and we are getting the beater up to par for his first vehicle. The prices are fair, not cheap but in this day and age, especially when it comes to automotive repair shops, you get what you pay for. My 2004 3.4L 6 Cyl Toyota Tundra was not running well and the check engine light had just come on. After reading reviews I decided to give JAM a try. I called to make an appointment and used their early bird drop off service. During the brief phone conversation I told him what I thought the problem was and we discussed maybe replacing the timing belt while it was in for service. Given the mileage when it was replaced last, the current mileage and the time of year (almost Christmas) and JAM advice, I decided to wait until after the holidays for that service. The next day I received a phone call from JAM at 11:12 am to tell me what they found and what they recommended. Turns out I needed exactly what I thought which was all new spark plugs and ignition coils. I was quoted a price of $628 which I thought was a little high but the whole reason I brought it in was because I didn't have time to fix it myself and I've got a 1500 mile round trip planned for next week. JAM also performed a complimentary maintenance inspection and found several other issues. They emailed a list of these issues with pictures and listed under categories of needing immediate or future attention. I am embarrassed to admit the pictures they showed me of my radiator cap and engine coolant. Needless to say the Engine Coolant flush and replace for $167 was a no brainer. They also recommended a transmission fluid flush and replace for $180 which I also had done. At 3:27 PM JAM called to tell me that my truck was ready for pick up. They are only open until 5 PM so it could have been an issue getting there before they closed but I supposed I could have paid over the phone and picked it up later. When I got inside my truck I found that JAM had left a bag of cookies with a note saying they thought I was one smart cookie for choosing them to service my vehicle. I agree! I was very happy with the customer service and the work that was completed. I was also able to take advantage of an online coupon and received a discount of $50. I have read in other reviews elsewhere that some customers received an new customer discount of 5 or 10% off which was not offered to me. Regardless, I am happy that my truck is ready for my trip and JAM has a new customer. I will definitely bring it back for any service it needs in the future. read more

Great place to get any auto work done. I needed 30,000 mile check up on my Infiniti. Dealer wanted more than $600. Japanese Auto Master did all the work for a little over $300. They were very accommodating as well. They offered to drive me home since I wanted to drop my car off. Also, I couldn't get back by closing time, so they took my payment over the phone.
