All the more reason I felt I need to do a review of my favorite hair salon and color specialist. This is looooong over due! I have been a client for a couple of years now, and a blonde all my life, so this is a WELL INFORMED REVIEW. Finding someone (even at high end salons) that can return my locks to the NATURAL looking blonde of my youth has been A LOT of trial & error; ending up either looking like a spotted leopard when my hair was pulled back (due to bleeding) or a bleach bottle blonde (due to overlapping) after a few cycles. Even if they could get it right the first time, being CONSISTANT was another thing. Dawn has DEFINITELY been consistent and my hair. My hair has literally never been healthier. If you can't get in with Dawn you're still in luck, because on top of the training the stylist come in with, Dawn provides each of her stylists with additional one-on-one training on her techniques. The color wasn't great (kinda brassy) and he took me in the lobby for better light -- my roots were still showing in places. Then he took me inside and was like, "since I'm new here, you get to name your own price. My rates are usually $... for a root touch up, and $... for a cut." Can't remember the exact numbers, but his normal price was close to $500 for both of those things. Maybe that's normal for this area, but I've never spent that much for a touch up and trim. And there was this awkward interaction between us where I was like, "I don't want to insult you, but I've never paid that much for my hair..." And he suggested over $300 and I was like, okay... which is still more than I've ever paid for my hair, but I'm not from this area, so again, this could be completely normal. I think the negotiating part at the end just left me feeling scammed. It was definitely my bad for not asking up front about pricing, but I was not expecting that cost and it wasn't the best hair experience I've ever had either. I guess I could see paying that much if my hair looked amazing, but it was just okay.

I saw one of the new owners, Dana. I think the issues began during the consultation. I showed her some pictures from Pinterest of some classic blonde styles. I mentioned that I was interested in having more lowlights added to my hair. Dana agreed that my hair needed "more dimension" and then proceeded to ask me some technical questions about how I wanted her to process my hair. I didn't realize it until later that she was creating a rooty blonde look. I know that it's a trend at the moment, but I don't think it was clearly communicated to me that this was look she was hoping to achieve. She proceeded to dye my entire head a dark brown color and then added blonde highlights. While this wasn't the style that I wanted, I had two larger issues with the experience. One was the execution of my look and second was that occasionally her comments felt condescending. She repeatedly said that my hair looked brassy when I came in, yet the brown she chose had reddish overtones. The blonde near my roots had a slight copper tinge to them as if it didn't process long enough. When I got home, I still had dye smeared on my face near my roots. I believe that this may have been an off day for her, but the resulting look I thought was worse than what I walked in with. I didn't notice the issues as much until I saw my hair in indoor lighting. The sloppy execution was pretty noticeable. Had I noticed these issues in the salon, I would've said something. Additionally, I felt that some of her comments further detracted from my experience. She seemed to form an opinion of my financial situation based on the fact that it's been several months since I had my hair cut and highlighted, stating "if you're on a budget" during our conversation. She continued in this manner of speaking to me when I asked for restaurant recommendations in Fort Collins. To Dana's credit, when I called to ask for more highlights, she did return my call, but by that point I decided that I needed a second opinion due to how poor my original experience had been. I went to a different salon where the stylist confirmed that wrong color of brown had been chosen and the blonde hadn't processed long enough. He meticulously colored over all of the brownish red and copper tones in my hair, so that I wouldn't have two layers of outgrowth. He treated me and my hair with the utmost care. Please save yourself the money and angst by choosing a different stylist or salon.
