Back to having a pet and back to going to Pets on Broadway. They still have the pet food return policy and they say they donate the extra food to rescue places. So just today we took back a flavor our puppy was having issues with for another type and we also brought some vet prescription food that she refused to eat anymore and they also said they could donate that. I am making an effort to switch away from megacorporations to local businesses wherever possible, and pet supplies is one of the areas I needed to make a switch. Instead of ordering from Chewy, I stopped by Pets on Broadway and I couldn't be happier about it. The worst thing about the store is the lack of parking. You may have to do (free) street parking and walk a block or two. Once you're in though, it is great. The store is so fun to browse, from the aquarium section to the cute toys to all the many supplies. They have every food type that I want for my dog and the option to request special orders if needed. One of the things Chewy is known for is their customer service and I think Pets on Broadway matches that. The staff is incredibly friendly/helpful and they have a very reasonable return policy. If you're unhappy with any item, you can return it for a full refund or exchange in 30 days, even if it's been opened. They donate what they can't restock. They also deliver locally! So you can order online and have things delivered to you. I love that they didn't box it up in bulky cardboard packaging, so there was no need to fill up my recycling bin. It's good to be able to shop locally in a shop that cares so much about puppies. We are novices, and each time we've been in with a question, a staff member has taken as much time as needed to explain and educate us. It's exceptional service from staff who seem to really enjoy people and their pets. We have had to return a few things, and that's easy and we saved $ on sale items and cash back. I was excited to find a local pet store, until I saw the reptile section. This store continues to sell "live feeders" despite the fact that this is harmful both to the rodents and the snakes. Snakes do perfectly fine fed on dead prey, and are protected from injury and disease this way. I could see mice and rats clawing at the walls of the small plastic bins they were kept in, in a noisy and hot environment with zero enrichment. You can see the display of pet rats with a lot of space and enrichment, showing this place does know what kind of enrichment rats require. Yet the feeder rats get zero consideration, despite them having the exact same needs. When an employee saw me looking she hurried over to turn me away from the area, insisting only employees were allowed to see back there. They know this is wrong. This is an unnecessary practice putting reptiles at risk and causing extreme suffering to rodents for no reason. If they have frozen feeders, why continue to sell live ones? It's completely unnecessary and caters to bad welfare practice. Anyone that tries to tell you this is necessary is severely misinformed. There are many other ways to enrich snakes that don't put them at risk and require this immense suffering. I can't trust a pet place that doesn't put the welfare needs of all animals as priority. read more

I called 2 weeks ago to ask about getting a box of cricket (1000) small. One of the employees called today to say they were in. I go to pick them up... $138.00!!!! for crickets!!!! absolutely insane!! I go online to search to order 1000 crickets from a random cricket farm, its $15.00 on average anywhere else you go online. This is such a great local pet shop. Been in the neighborhood since 1990, and always has the best pet supplies and responsibly raised and cared for pets for sale. They have a great small animal section, and even a rat waitlist if you are so inclined to choose a rattie (they make great pets) as your companion. Lots of high quality supplies for those little fuzzies. And the best, you can buy food there for small animals in bulk! So way cheaper and no packaging! They often have featured cats from local places for adoption, no doggies though, and I feel that. Their fish section is like a little aquarium and is fun to buy or just walk around for a bit! This I would say is a higher-end establishment, but they have lots of fair-priced items, and for our dog, we often will go after a holiday to pick up sale toys. Let me start by saying, the workers are so friendly i almost didnt want to post this review. I am going to assume it depends on the time of day though. Walking in at around 4pm and the shop is empty on a weekday, kind of rough, I got no greeting or acknowledgement that I even came to the shop. Fortunately, I walked in to the aquatic section because I am a fish keeper. I chatted with the woman, who seems to know the bare minimum about fish (Which is fine, most places don't know much about the products they sell, but they DO indeed love animals) I wanted to mention that my friend had purchased 4 feeder fish and gotten a 10 gallon tank and were told it would be a perfect tank. I looked my friend dead in the eye and said what shop?? and she mentioned Pets on Broadway. This was back in february... I went over to visit towards the end of June, and these fish are almost 3 inches now and shes questioning me why a shop would sell the feeders knowing that they actually grow? to my surprise my last visit.. back to what I said, the workers are really friendly depending on time of day. The worker that acknowledged me mentioned that she doesn't know a lot about fish and she was covering someone, which made sense. But I am still questioning the 4 feeders in a 10 gallon tank.. Anyways. great service if you go in at the right time, lots of different products, a bit pricey, but you can expect that from a small business because they still have to make profit for their overhead etc; I discovered plants on broadway across the street as well. High quality food brands (fridge fresh, raw and kibble), bulk treats, plenty of toys - including heavy chewer toys and bullies/bones, beds, pet hygiene, all the accessories and tons of similar choices for cats, your tiny fury caged pets and fish! They even have ice cold drinks for humans for purchase. I choose to frequent this business to support the local community and because I loathe the monstrous and loud corporate pet supply stores. I personally watched one of the owners (specifically the dude) scream in a customer's (the owner of an elderly husky) face because his dog had an accident on the floor. They were a regular customer all his dogs life up until that. Additionally they have live feeders breeding and eating their young with how stressed out they get, they put the most uneducated people in lead positions and it's just insane! I love this Pet shop!! I traditionally stop-by after I take my pup to Doggy School- down the road (Happy Go Lucky). But, I love their treat supply, and each month they have different brands on special/on sale. And, I usually get something new for the pups to try when I'm there. And, they also have a really good supply of dog toys too! And, the staff is very friendly and helpful. On multiple occurrences I have asked them for tips and advice, and they have been extremely helpful in their advice. And, they are open at 8 am on a weekday which is really convenient! As it seems other competitors don't open for an hour or two later, this is really nice to be in there at 8 am. read more

PoB is my go to spot for frozen mice for my hognose. They are always good quality (at least visually... I asked Draco for a review, he just said hhssss ‍), fairly priced & the staff is awesome. My dogs also love coming in and trying the treat samples, and usually end up leaving with treats too, since their favorites are at snout level... we're looking at you, Junkyard Bones. I would love to see superworms in store, but that's likely a 'me problem,' versus an 'everybody problem.' I'd prefer buying small than from the Big Box Store across the street from me. It could have been that they were out the last time I was there, but I don't remember seeing them on the price list... read more

I got my beautiful darling tarantula here several months ago! Great people working here, and good service! They had a very cute enclosure for her in store. I get mealworms from here occasionally. Always fun to come over and see what they have instore! A little worried, because the employee told me they would mist them. Don't mist your spiders. Humidity is not good for avics, caribena versicolor included. Try providing a water dish instead! read more

I have a long-standing retail location where I buy my pet food, but for everything else pet-related I buy from Pets on Broadway. This locally owned business is deeply rooted in the community, and has faithfully served its clientele for many years. There is a wide variety of leashes, collars, bedding, medication and anything else you can think of. The small animals that are sold on site are well-cared for, and the staff are quite informative and helpful. Aside from my vet, this is my go-to place for any information I need. Street parking is a bit of a problem, but you can find parking spots in front of the building on Broadway, or in the neighborhood blocks surrounding the store. read more

Great supply on pet stuff! While, yes, they're a bit more geared towards dogs/cats, they do have aquarium items, reptile items, and bird items! Hubby and I specifically came by to check out what they have for dog supplies and box turtle supplies. For cats and dogs, they have a wide range of offerings from bedding, treats, food, and pet lover miscellaneous items. For all other species, they have a good range of the basic items, and sometimes a bit broader of a selection depending on what you're looking for. It's a pretty big store, but it didn't smell rank or off, which was a bit of a relief; we've definitely gone to places that didn't seem to clean too well, and there was a bit of an unbearable funk after awhile. Staff was great! Each one made their rounds and checked in on us from time-to-time in case we had any questions. I think we ended up with a few treats and toys for our spoiled pup. Good prices, and not too overbearingly expensive. Yes, there were some things that were probably a little more pricey than if we were to go to a different store, but we were basing our judgment with what we have in California, and Portland doesn't have sales tax, so it's sort of a wash in the end when it comes to prices. Would come back if we were in the area. Also, shameless plug moment!: there are several bookstores in the nearby area to visit, e.g., Crooked House Books and Broadway Books. Parking seems to be street parking only? We had walked by from several blocks away because we were visiting multiple stores at once, but I never checked if there was a parking lot for this shop specifically. Well stocked store that carries healthy and nutritious food for my two kitties. Conveniently located on NE Broadway with parking right out front, making it easy to run in and out when I need to pick up cat food, toys and other items. They have a loyalty program and just the other day the huge bag of Nulo cat food I stopped in to buy ended up being free! Wahoo! They are well stocked in supplies for all pets, not just cats. Every week a mobile vet is at this location and I have used them for check-ups and vaccines, at a much lower price than my vet. It's a great value added offering! Customer service is always helpful and friendly; they offer to carry the huge bag of cat food to my car. On weekends, they often have free small bagged samples of cat and dog food for your pets to try. For picky cats, this helps tremendously. Been coming here since my dog was a puppy (a year) and literally have an account w yall and was putting some of the free treats they have in my reusable shopping bag and was also holding a big bag of dog food in my arm and the manager comes over to ask if he can take the bag of food to the front. I'm not stupid I know they thought I was stealing despite the fact that I am a regular and have always been loyal to this store (and always pay.. duh) Just super rude to be honest! Friendly staff, lots of fish! 15min or 30min parking right on Broadway so made for a quick in-and-our trip. We were looking for a few more guppies to add to the fish tank and they had a decent offering. Wish they provided written instructions for introducing the new fish into a tank but the staff did talk us through the process when we asked.
