I'm going to dig in here for the people who are struggling with a new puppy or young dog. Kerry welcomed us into her Puppy Play and Learn Program to try and help our dachshund, Henry socialize more and to potentially identify and sooth his quirks and anxiety. He's an awkward guy with the sweetest heart but quite frankly, we'd been to a few other establishments that offer both play and training and we did not find our match. Those experiences made me feel like a 'problem parent' and instead of assimilating him into the pack- he was isolated to practice being alone in another room in a strange place while he could hear other dogs playing and definitely came home more anxious and misunderstood and it was expensive. Like anyone else in this position you throw money at what you hope will stick and it's overwhelming. Henry loves other dogs and being part of the pack and we didn't even know that until we found our spot. Our experience at Dog Adventures NW could not have been more different. The first thing Kerry said to me via email was "He sounds like a real turkey which is just my type!". This felt like a life ring and a big warm blanket rolled in one. Henry adores Kerry and was perfectly matched to his group and we have done the 'add on training' at noon 4-5 times thus far and I can guarantee we've made significant head way each time. The one on one training has been as helpful for me because our dynamic was off and some crummy patterns were set into motion early in his puppyhood. I needed the support as much (or more) as Henry does and together we are totally finding our way. I went from crying multiple times a week (it was really bad) to getting into a rhythm that I almost did not think was possible. I have also fallen for Kerry and her professionalism, pragmatism, brilliant canine training and experience. Puppy Play and Learn is not doggie daycare. It's an incredibly balanced morning of all the things these dogs need to be on their way to awesome pets. It feels like a luxury but it is our necessity. When Henry sees Kerry- the sound he makes is like no other sound he ever makes. She speaks his language and I've adopted the lessons (training) he's learned each time he goes and we get better together. I read an awful stat the other day that said "In the US, 4,000,000 puppies come home each year and 3,000,000 of those are put up for adoption. I'm proud to say we've been officially saved from becoming part of that hideous equation when we were almost there. Henry is 10.5 months and we love each other more each day. It's been a slow burn with this puppy and we didn't sweep each other off our feet immediately which devastated me. We finally have our support system firmly in place thanks to Dog Adventures NW. When I was ill, Kerri provided training, sitting and board for my 13 week old puppy. He spent almost 6 weeks with her until I recovered from surgery. When I was sick and in the hospital, she brought him to see me whenever I called. She took him to my vet for his puppy check-ups and vaccinations. We are not even remotely close to Kerri as we live in NE Portland and my vet is way up in N Portland. It's a real "adventure" to drive across Portland whenever you are asked. It broke my heart to be separated from him at such a young age. I believe because she never hesitated to bring him to see me, it helped me heal. I was fearful all the time he was away and the visits as well as the pictures and daily reports kept them at bay. In the pictures she sent me, he was always the happiest of puppies. He is pretty much not afraid of dogs or people and is comfortable in all kinds of situations. She taught him all sorts of manners in different climates. She took him for coffee, camping and overnights at the beach. They really did go on adventures all over the northwest! Training such a young puppy in all these situations had to be an enormous challenge. She taught him the basics, but more that, she taught him how to be a well tempered puppy wherever he was. He knew how to go into environments everywhere and stay with the family. Even today, trying for recall is a huge challenge. He gets distracted by seagulls, squirrels, and most moving objects, but still learned to stay close to his family. That is a lot more important than "sit, stay, down, etc. I didn't know until looking back on all the pictures she posted, how much fun and especially, how much love he was given for all those weeks. At Kerri's he got to play with all sorts of puppies and her dog JoJo. Her 8 year old daughter loved him like her own and even Kerri's husband could not resist him. Where could you ever get that kind of care for your dog? I don't care the cost, I feel like the luckiest person for my daughter finding Kerri for me. Our lab Nigel has the very best time on his adventures with his trainer Matt. Nigel always comes home tired and happy, and has learned to recognize the sound of Matt's car. The minute he arrives, Nigel is at the door semi-hysterical as he is so thrilled that Matt has arrived. We finally adopted a new dog after our previous dog Cleo died of old age in 2018. It had been 18 years since we had young dog energy in our world, and HOO BOY it has been a trip. Our Alaskan Klee Kai puppy (Momo) has been attending Puppy Play and Learn with Kerry Ryan for the last two months, and I feel like words cannot express how valuable it has been for us! Momo is such a great puppy, but is also incredibly curious, independent, and stubborn which just means we have had to put in extra work trying to figure out how to get him engaged in training. He is also very social, and trying to get all his puppy needs met often left me feeling overwhelmed. We'd tried a few different options for day camp-type socialization for him, and it just wasn't a good fit, in part because Momo was just too excited to be around other dogs! Kerry has been an incredible advocate for Momo since day one. She is so knowledgeable and during our initial consultation with her, she shared a lot of great information about working with a natural dog breed. Momo warmed up to her a lot quicker than most people, and it was so nice knowing Kerry not only liked our weird little dude but also knew how to work with him. She was not deterred by some of his personality traits I had started to worry were bad, and totally normalized his struggle to chill around new friends! My husband and I cannot say enough good things about Autumn at Dog Adventures NW. She watched our mini dachshund, who is quite a handful, while we were out of town to get married. It was important for us to find a person and a company that offered in-house care, to not disrupt his scenery and routine as much as possible. Needless to say, we wanted to make sure we had someone caring, trustworthy, and loving to watch our little guy in our home while we were out of town for such an important event. Dog Adventures NW is such an amazing company! The staff is absolutely wonderful, very friendly and easy to work with. The trainers are very professional, attentive and knowledgeable to my dog's needs and training routines. I know my dog is in good hands when he is out on his adventures. I have been with this company for 6 months now and absolutely love the service. When Jaime comes to the door to pick Samson up, he is full of excitement and she is full of love for him! Samson comes home with the biggest smile on his his face and you can tell he has had the best day. I also get a message after his adventures with the day's recap and some great photos of my dog on his outing. I love the pick up and drop off service as it makes it very convenient! If I am not home for pick up and or drop off, I have a spare key outside so Samson does not miss his day out. I fully trust Jaime with access to the key as she is very reliable and honest. His leash is always put back where I keep it and she makes sure the TV is left on for him as he is one spoiled boy. I highly recommend this company as Kerry (the owner) has put her heart and soul into creating an incredible brand. read more
