They assured us he was over it. It's been 8 days and 2 vet visits and a hospital stay later we know he had pneumonia. I'm talking thousands of dollars in week one. They have services that are discounted and/or donated. He should have been properly treated before being allowed to be adopted. I seriously love this place. Can I just put a hammock up in the kennels and live here? They have a great volunteer program and extensive classes for all kinds of creatures. Free classes are also available to the public. They have primarily "owner surrendered" pets, but they have a Second Chance program, which allows animals another chance at getting adopted, primarily from shelters/humane societies that don't have as many resources or the right demographics. Portland is pet-centric and very dog friendly, so they adopted out 99% of their dogs in 2013. They're the 3rd oldest Humane Society in the country, but definitely up there with being modern and tech-savvy. One thing most places don't have is a surgery viewing area. You can view surgeries (mainly spay and neuter). They really do care about educating the public. I, like most people, am a dog person. I like dogs more than people, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I talk to them in my dorky baby voice. I just can't help it. Their kennels are amazing, right down to their security and waste disposal systems. As a volunteer, I'm super excited to work with all of the animals that call OHS home for a short while, but I fear that I'll become the crazy dog lady. There's not a bad pup in this place. I'm sure I'll be posting pictures like a madwoman. It's incredibly therapeutic coming here - and it's free! I feel so good about OHS based on their practices, their staff, and their outreach. I am not a local of Portland, but I do love frequenting my local Humane Society and so when on a trip to Portland with my boyfriend and the husky pup in tow, we decided to drop by. The space is well organized (cats, dogs, small animals), clean (everything is sparkly and no strange smells), quite expansive (seemingly never ending cats, kittens, and doggies), and the people working there are very knowledgeable and friendly (a woman by the pet store came and talked to us for 15 minutes, as we told her about our pup and asked for park recommendations). There was a particular kitty I was interested in, but it didn't make sense to adopt in Portland and then road trip down with her to California where I live. We had a wonderful experience here at OHS. We even adopted our first dog here a month ago. We were 3rd on the gold list and managed to take our dog home because the other two families did not want him. I'm glad they didn't because he is such an amazing dog. We are so lucky and thankful he came into our lives. The adoption process was great, all we did was sign a few papers and pay and they sent us home with a bunch of coupons online. So apparently they don't do low cost spay & neuter services so that's just wonderful from the only place in the whole state that did it. This state clearly doesn't care about animals since they close down every opportunity for anyone that isn't completely rich to get any assistance. Then when you try to contact any other business that provides spay or neuter services, it becomes a car dealership lmao $400 for this $200 for that like these are animals? I'm SURE it doesn't cost anyone upwards of a thousand dollars to fix a cat. We adopted a 9 year old cat during the Covid-19 pandemic from here and we are so happy we did! The process was easy from starting online to meeting our pet and then taking him home. Caution: this is long and may need to be updated since we aren't completely done with our experience. Start 12/22: my 13 yo and I walk in, and it's super busy. We expect this. We walk around and see a few kittens we would like to meet with. This experience on this day was not good. We can chalk it up to holiday stress and high volume of clientele. The two individuals I worked with were very negative about every possible thing and deterred us left and right from even meeting any kittens let alone adding any to our family for this reason or another (it was always something!) 12/23: I felt it necessary to reach out to them this day regarding the incident the prior day from their website instead of going here right away (it's unfair to not allow the company to correct a potential fluke!) 12/24: Eleena called me back this day and she was sincere and apologetic. She was kind and understanding and informative. We spoke about what had happened and how to proceed in potentially having an addition to our family. We decided we were going to make a list for her to keep an eye out for since it's more important to us to have a family member in a month that fits our family dynamic then not or having the not right fit just for instant gratification. 12/28: randomly we were back with a family member. They were looking at adding a canine to their family. I went and peaked at the kittens and there was one that wasn't able to be met with but we will be meeting her this week and maybe bringing her home if it feels right (to us and her). We worked with another member of their leadership team, Hobie I believe his name was (also very kind and personable) and we were not disappointed. Summing up this experience so far in, the company had an issue with some customer service as do all companies. Remembering they can't fix something that they don't know is broken, I informed, and I'm told it's going to be if not already addressed, as all companies should do. They handled our experience with a great deal of professionalism and compassion. Maybe it didn't start out that way, but it ended up that way! We have had animals from the shelter before. And some from breeders. My choice will always be humane society first. Well, unless we have another experience like before. We may never adopt from here again if I'm treated poorly again. read more

To combat my negative review, "Barbara," at OHS leaves a frosty reply, and defends the practice of separating human from dying, sick animals, when pets need their owners the most. I dont want ANYTHING from OHS, but I cannot allow this unusual and cruel act on sick, or dying animals, (or their owners), to continue... in fact, I am pretty sure that the only reason I was responded to, by, "Barbara," was to try to invalidate my concerns of animal cruelty. OHS, I have already started blasting that shiny reputation of yours. I wont quit, until you stop this practice, and my next step, is speaking to OREGON LIVE, and WILLAMETTE WEEK to see if they will do a story. I will seek out your largest donors, and tell them whay happened...and I will also tell every sponsor you have, about what happened to me. I actually feel very as sorry for the animals in your care, as we speak. Change your practice. If your techs cannot deal with emotional owners, they are working in the wrong place. Hire new techs. Maybe you could have taken some of that money that my friends and I have donated over the years, and BUILT a facility to accommodate owners, during their pet's final moments, instead of telling me I couldn't be in the room, after I paid you. For years I've been coming to the humane society to "window shop." I come and look at the kittens at the kitten room. Check out the adult cats in the 4 or 5 main rooms that are all thematically decorated. Then I go to the room with the smaller animals. Guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and all types of rabbits. After all these years, I finally decided it was time to get a kitten of my own. First off, OHS is a great organization. They are a new kill shelter and they take in animals from all around the country, especially from other shelters that have too many animals. They also do tons of community outreach and aid work. Their website is excellent for adoption. It is updated throughout the day with what animals are available, and they are taken off the website as they are adopted. That was really useful so I wouldn't waste my time going over there when they didn't have any kittens. After finally deciding on a kitten, I had a one on one sit down with a worker and they gave me guidance on what to expect and a full run down on her history and medical condition. The care and attention they provide is unrivaled. If you need a pet, this is the place to go. read more

I adopted my perfect cat here! Her shelter name was Sweetie, which is so so fitting for her. The team was quick to respond to my adoption inquiry and they were very helpful in teaching me how to care for her because I have never had a cat before and she had just had a pretty gnarly spaying procedure. It's been almost a year with her and I couldn't be more happy and full of love! Because she was an older cat (3ish years old) she was only $50, but let me tell ya, she's priceless to me. Best $50 I've ever spent and I really encourage taking a chance on an "older" cat. She took some time to warm up to me, but with patience, she felt comfortable enough to cuddle after a few days. Now she's the sweetest lap cat on earth with the LOUDEST meow. As a dog owner of rescues, I strive to visit shelters and adopt dogs from second chance programs. After my young six year old Pit mix passed, I figured no better a place than Oregon Humane Society. I have a five year old chihuahua mix that is indifferent to dogs at first but warms up quick and my roommate has a young cattle dog who has a lot of energy and loves to play. I wanted to get an older puppy who would be the best of both worlds for these two. I found one, Goldie, at OHS that seemed like a great fit and came back later for a meet and greet. After an hour of waiting, we brought the two dogs out back. I told Beth, the employee, that the cattle dog(Lucky)was leash reactive but very fun off leash. She suggested putting him behind a barrier to meet the young puppy. Lucky and the puppy got very overly excited and reached a point where they became overstimulated due to the barrier. Beth suggested she bring out her coworker Lori to help us since she wanted more eyes on the dogs interactions and because she felt she was unable to hold the dog back because she had a bad back. My first thought was...hmm okay... So far, Lucky was reacting as usual when he is amped to meet another dog but to them it was a different story. After Lori came out, she explained Lucky was not leash reactive and just did not want to meet the puppy. "That this was a dog(Lucky) who did not want to meet another dog". I know this dog, when you trap him behind a fence and dangle a dog in his face that he wants to meet, he will get amplified. I mentioned many times that he was very good off leash, but it didn't matter. Our house was not a good fit. I know my dogs, and I know what I saw. Stating my roommates' dog was leash reactive over and over, which by that point was not happening. In the end, they never even let the two meet. My final point is that they described a five month old puppy like a dog who had solidified all social cues, and could not be changed or helped in any way. It is a puppy! What I saw were two people who misinterpreted a situation and did not allow a puppy go to a loving and good home. I was shut down completely by their remarks and will try a more knowledgeable shelter for a dog. read more

Over the last 25 years, we have adopted three dogs from the OHS, all of them imperfect and fantastic in different ways Dog 1, Daisy, a 75 pound three year old Lab-Pit mix, came to us with kennel cough and several hot-spots. She overcame it all, and was the dog that watched over our infants (slept below the cribs) as well as chased a burglar out of our home. She almost made it to 16..... Dog 2, GiGi a 65 pound two year old Boxer-Pit mix, came to us with a finicky stomach and ear issues. GiGi proved to be a playful, kid friendly, oversized lap-dog. She loved to sleep in the middle (or on top of) of all the kids at slumber parties. We lost her at 10 years. Dog 3, Stanley, a 96 pound, 4 year old English/American Lab, is our current OHS adoptee. Stanley's weight at adoption was 57 pounds, and we were told he shouldn't exceed 75. Stan has a sensitive stomach and is very afraid of the wind, but is a fantastic companion to all in our family, and guards our house and yard with authority. My reason for sharing this? It's because I just read through the yelp reviews for the Humane Society, and am appalled at the negative criticism. You had to wait a few hours for the adoption process? Stop complaining, OHS is non-profit. If you want service, go to a breeder and spend the $1,000 for your pet. Maybe they will serve you a latte while you pre-socialize with the animal..... The staff didn't meet your customer service criteria? Stop whining. Financial restrictions dictate how this organization is staffed. The person you dealt with is going through the same process over and over again. Perhaps if you donated more money, OHS would staffed differently. You are upset that your pet had ailments not caught or recognized by the Humane Society? Take a breath. It happens. It's life. Vets aren't perfect. Buy pet insurance (It's saved me almost $3,500 with dog 3). My kids both have medical issues, but I'm not giving Group Health in Seattle negative reviews on Yelp..... Not happy that OHS wanted a bit more information on you or time because you were adopting a Pit? News-Flash: They don't know you. They don't know your history. They don't know if your yard is fenced. Risk Management, people..... This organization is far from perfect, and I don't like everything that goes on there either, but the bottom line is they take in more rescues and re-home (I hate that term) than most like organizations. My opinion is that the animals and public are fortunate that there are people at OHS who will walk animals, clean up pens, sit with scared animals, and deal with angry, impatient people, always working towards of finding animals a home. read more

I'll admit I come here twice a month just to play with the kittens!! I would take them all home if I could. I love the kennel design it makes it so easy to interact with the animals, the animals are well cared for and the adoption fees are reasonable. Before you shop adopt they have almost 20 kittens right now that need new homes. The staff is super friendly but who could be grumpy working in such an Amazing place.. There was a line at the door at 9:30 so if you picked a friendly face from there online list you better be first in line to insure you get first pick since they go fast.. read more

Adopted a kitty from here recently and the process was extremely easy. Everyone was very helpful and friendly, making me even more happy with my purchase. However my kitty did end up having tapeworms (which as someone who has never experienced those before was one of the most horrifying moments of my life, to see worms squiggly out of your kitty's bum hole) so just a warning out there. Other than that, my kitty has been the perfect addition to my household **BUSINESS REPLIED AND SAID THEY TREATED THE KITTY WITH DEWORMER** However I took my kitty to Banefield ASAP and got her dewormed (again I guess?) and have seen nothing like that. Live worms are supposed to be breaking off egg sacs and wriggling out of my kitty's butt after being dewormed?? That sounds inaccurate. Plus I got an email from another employee a few days back saying that tapeworms may not be covered under the treatment you guys give. read more

I received estimates for neutering and shots and microchipping to the tune of $503.00 per kitten. I have 2 so it would cost me over $1006.00. I filled out an application online at the Oregon Humane Society and was told it would take 3-7 months to get an appointment if at all. 2 weeks later I received a call that I could come in the next day! It was truly a wonderful experience .I live on less than $1100.00 per month. I adopted 2 "rescue" kittens. At the time, I did not think of expense of cat litter, cat food and vet services. I am 75 and all the dogs for 1 child, and all the cats for the other, only 1 time did 1 of them see a vet. My litter and cats food cost $90.00 a month. I need to find an affordable source. Me and my grandmother went here recently, And i'm blown away. There was no cats available. Also, your prices are insane. You have so many dogs that are old and need care, and you continue to charge over 200 dollars a dog.. The point is to rescue them.. Not get an insane amount of money for a sick old dog. Also, you take awful care of the dogs. Almost all of there food and water dishes were completely empty. One pitbulls ribs were showing. Selfish company, with terrible care taking. read more

Sorry to tell you this, but my new puppy Sansa is the best & brightest ... and cutest & cuddliest ... and craziest and bitiest dog evah. Thank you Oregon Humane Society. Sansa is her name and she is a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix of joy and terror. Love her. Besides furniture, carpet, clothing, and hands without bite marks, rips, and tears are over-rated, right? Getting a puppy is competitive at OHS. My best tip is to go often and go early in the day because by the time you get an email announcing a cute pup, he'll be adopted (or have a hold placed) long before you get there. We started looking for a puppy to adopt after moving to the area. Six months and a dozen visits later plus several second/third puppy holds, we finally got the best, brightest, cutest, and cuddliest dog ever. We completed the Oregon Humane Society Puppy Training class held over 7 weeks in the evening. Sansa got her graduation certificate although to be honest I think it was more a certificate of attendance and good luck. She definitely needs a remedial class. If you get a cat, bunny, or dog from the Oregon Humane Society, also check out the small store for some really good deals. We got an excellent starter package for the puppy for about $80 which included a cage, toys, leash/collar, food, bowls, and treats. Everything you need to make it through the first day with your little puppy of joy. After that, plan several return visits to learn how to train your own best, brightest, cutest, and cuddliest new member of the family. read more

Let me start by saying this is the smoothest running, best organized, and friendliest pet adoption we've ever experienced. The facility is spotless, uncrowded, and considering that everyone who walks in the door is looking for an animal to love -- a very relaxed and orderly place. We saw a dog online, and having never been here, didn't realize that the line to get first pick of new arrivals would start long before the doors open in the morning. We got there a full hour after the opening bell -- and except that the pup we wanted to see had gone to the vet for his surgery, we'd have already lost him. As it turned out, we just stayed in Portland for the night and were first in line the next morning. We met our pup, fell in love, and took him home by lunchtime. Did I mention that this spectacular building is bigger than the high school I attended? I'm not sure what full-capacity is, but there were dozens of dogs, plus more dozens of cats -- and a room full of hamsters, gerbils, bunnies, rats, mice, birds, turtles and other small critters. Evidently they also do some farm-types as well -- but not in this building. There's a great little gift shop/pet store with all the basics you might need to take your pet home, and lots of swag-coffee cups and t-shirts to show your support for the good work they do. And because this is Portland -- this HUGE facility places -- not a few hundred -- but THOUSANDS of pets every year. So many Oregonians love their animals that the OHS takes regular shipments of unwanted animals (otherwise destined for death-row) from California. Every week or two, big trucks full of crated dogs make the long journey up I-5 to this no-kill shelter. That's where our guy came from -- so OHS made no bones (lol) about knowing nothing of his past. But we've had many dogs through the years -- and while his obvious abuse/neglect was evident, so was his playful and hopeful spirit. He went from scruffy, frightened, and half-starved -- to bouncing, happy, and fighting-weight in just a few weeks. This is a good place. read more

I want to stress that the services they provide through adoptions are extraordinary. On reflection, I have some issues with their human services. We emailed and called multiple people at OHS to see if we could have our information forwarded to the adopters of the littermates of our dog, as the whole litter was adopted out at OHS. If people were willing to contact us, we thought it would be very cool to exchange photos of the dogs, now they are grown up. Nobody at OHs answered my multiple emails. I called, expressed my frustration that nobody answered my emails, somebody called me back and left a message apologizing. I left a message for that person thanking her for calling and asking about my original question, about forwarding our information, and she never called me back. I left another message about a week after, expressing my frustration that both phone calls and emails were left unanswered, and again, no response. I wasn't asking for information to be revealed to me. One email could have forwarded my info to the other dog owners. This could have been a fun experience for us and the other dog owners, but instead, OHS refused to offer any customer service. If they had just said, "NO, we don't do that" I would have stopped emailing and calling and called it a day, but no response is just rude. I get it, I'm not giving them thousands of dollars, I don't rank high on their list of people to call back. This was about a year ago, that I last tried to contact them. A full year's time given for them to respond, and I've received nothing, other than mail requests to donate money. Anyway, I would definitely adopt from OHS again if I still lived in Oregon, I just wouldn't expect any assistance as soon as I walked out the door with the dog. read more

I was surprised when I stepped in the Oregon Humane Society. I'm used to dogs barking and not so great smells but this place was anything but that! They have a small room for rabbits and other small animals. They all have a lot of room in their crates and seem to be really happy. The four areas where the dogs are kept are huge! The have so many animals there and it's so nice to see since that probably means they aren't being put down (are they?). The dogs, big or small, have a lot of room with blankies, some have toys and cute cot type beds! They even have an area in the back they can go if they don't want to be disturbed. The set up is very nice and clean and the staff are all so friendly. Granted I'm comparing this humane society to the one back home, this one is really nice and ..Humane! :) read more

At first I really liked this shelter. It reminded me a lot of the one in Long Beach, where I have happily helped three cats find homes (one of them with me). Well, I made the mistake of stopping by this shelter with my friend who lives locally and was very disappointed when I learned they would not let me adopt a cat if I didn't also live in Portland. While I understand the rationale behind this sentiment-- I'm sure the woman at the counter only had Mustang Sally's best interest at heart-- I had fallen in love with her and was willing to put in the extra effort and fork out the extra cash to take her home with me on my flight. My friend was also willing to watch the kitten for a short time if the shelter felt it would be too abrupt to take her on a plane right after adoption. Still, no go. I left the shelter fighting back tears, and wishing I had lied to the people who work there. Let me stress here that I am not a dishonest person, so I was more than a little upset that I was punished for being forthright about my situation. I called the shelter back three times that day, hoping she had not been adopted, hoping I could put a hold on her before someone else took her home. Not a chance. It wasn't policy. I don't know what I could have done to make it clear that I was serious and very much attached to that little kitten. But, the day ended so sadly for me. By the time I could get back to the shelter (to make my case again), I was too late. I watched as a family carried her out of the meet-and-greet room, ready to sign the papers for her adoption. I felt like I'd been kicked in the gut. I hope the woman at the counter knows how heartbreaking it is to want to take an animal home and be rejected. When animals all over this country are being shipped by breeders, mishandled by irresponsible owners, and euthanized by shelters, it seems unconscionable to me to turn away a dedicated cat-owner because of extenuating circumstances. It has left a VERY bad taste in my mouth about the politics and decision-making of this shelter. What authority did she have to determine whether or not I could adopt? I strongly doubt they have the authority to make sure adopted pets stay within the Oregon state border for their lifetimes. If you want to adopt from this shelter, you should be prepared to either lie or never move out of the immediate area. read more

Have you been here???? You MUST go!!!!!! It's crazy far from where I live, but was SO worth the drive. It just makes me LOVE Oregon SO much more. I've got this crazy desire to have a dog. The cat is seriously distraught with this idea. So, I haven't committed fully to getting one, just playing with the idea. I visited their website and found lots of dogs. A couple looked pretty interesting. But, just like with online dating I was a little leery of internet photos. I knew I had to make the 25 minute drive out there. The building is a giant compound on NE Columbia Boulevard. It's uber clean and shiny inside and out. No doggy poopy pee smell hitting you in the face. The greeters at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. I got there only 30minutes before closing, which gave me only enough time to check out the dog area. If given more time, I would spend the whole day here. I love Critters. Each dog has it's own clean spacious enclosure. They all wear attractive collars AND tags. SO adorable. And just as I thought, the internet photo didn't clearly represent the dog I met in person. In my short visit I was able to see all the dogs and chit chat with the front desk greeters. I noticed they have a very large cat adoption area and a small area for caged critters. There is also a super cute little retail store. There is a lot more to the compound, but this is all I got to quickly gander at. I am so happy animals have a place like this to care for them and find loving homes. I had done some reading online before I had drove out there. The Oregon Humane Society doesn't get a dime of government money. It is COMPLETELY funded on donations and adoption fees. my friend just adopted a cat that they said was healthy. it was sneezing on the way hope and kept getting worse. They made her wait days for the free exam. Turns out it has a respiratory infection that can be spread to her elderly dogs and should have been in isolation. She paid another $200 for meds. This cat has another underlying problem that will cause life long illness. She had to wait for the one hour window per day that you can return an adopted pet and was told she would get a refund for having adopted a sick cat whose illness was not disclose, and paying for medication that should have been given prior to adoption. They will now not refund her, and her two old dogs are sick and not eating. One dog has renal failure and may die from this sick cat. They need to give a refund so she can get her dying dog to the vet. This is the humane society's fault that this is happening. We recently adopted our third pet from OHS (endpetlessness amiright?) We have gotten two dogs and just got a new cat. The volunteer who helped us was extremely helpful and friendly. We knew we were looking for a cat comfortable with dogs, so read all the signs. There were two that indicated they were cool with the hounds. The volunteer was very upfront and let us know one of them had some issues and needed some special attention - probably more than we could bite off right now. We ended up with the other cat (a silver tabby that got dumped at some ones property) and named him Sterling. He is awesome, gets along great with the dog and we are happy to have him join our family. I think they do a super job at this organization and would love it if everyone got their animals from the Humane Society. read more

Hi! My name is Emily and I adopted a pitbull terror mix from the Oregon Humane Society about four months ago in May, not only was i questioned about adopting a pitbull and what my intentions were with him, the adoption process was horrible. I saw young couples and old couples leaving with dogs a lot quicker then I was who got there at the same time. I was coming back to the shelter for three days before I could adopt him, when the process was all over I took him home and he was a completely new happy pup! I told myself as soon as I saw him in there that I was going to get him out, when I got him they told me about his level one heart murmur and his enlarged heart and told me it could take 4 years off his life, knowing I could give him a better life I accepted the responsibility and brought Dougly home. He loved it, but my girlfriend and I noticed how doug's wouldn't let us anywhere near his paws or the lower part of his feet, so thinking it was just his touchy spots we never thought anything of it and proceeded to focus on making sure he was eating the right food and getting enough exercise for his heart. A week ago I noticed he had started limping and not wanting to go up and down our apartment stairs to go outside ( before he would get so excited he'd bark at me with excitement to get out and see other dogs in our neighbor hood ) So I thought maybe he got something in his paw like a splinter or a piece of something, looked and nothing was there. One morning I woke up and he wouldn't put his paw down on the floor, and snapped at me when I pet him and even got close to his paw, and then would come up to me immediately after and nudge me to pet him... something was wrong and i took him to the vet that day. I found out that my dog had a cracked nail and the shieth around his nail was completely gone, his nail was in lodged into his toe and they would have to extract his whole toenail and maybe amputate his whole toe or paw. Devastated, I scraped up all of my savings and he had to be put under for surgery. He came out of surgery with medicine and drooling so much i had to wipe out the cone I had to buy him as well, he could barley walk to the car, and I had to carry him up my apartment stairs. I left for an hour to go get something to eat with my girlfriend and I came home to blood all over his kennel and our bedroom, not little bits but puddles of blood and everywhere he stepped it got worse. My girlfriend and I ran to our bathroom and got what paper towels and socks we had to try and stop the bleeding but nothing was working and i had to stay up and apply pressure on his paw the whole night, he was scared and laid in bed with us. The next morning, our bed was covered in blood and I rushed him to the hospital at 6:45am, the doctor kept him during the day and told me that the humane society had ALSO missed a clotting disorder, if you remember from earlier, he has an enlarged heart and a level one heart murmur, those three things mixed are a deadly combo and have to be watched with intense care. They kept him for another day and put him on sedatives, he has to be sedated every day 24 hours a day now and the humane society has not answered ONE of my calls or texts, and I even went into the shelter and waited for the lead medical staff member to talk to me, he made me wait for an hour and a half and never even called me back. 400+$ in medical bills and another year and a half off my dogs life because of a toenail and a clotting disorder they missed. never.again. read more

The first time we went to OHS we didn't walk away with a pup, it was disappointing at first, but the staff encourage you to continue to come back until your find your favorite little friend. We finally started to meet some more pups, and we knew right away that our little pooch was perfect. The staff member we worked with was so nice and supportive, she gave us lots of space to interact with our pup without hovering. The paperwork process was simple, and we got a wide variety of support, coupons, and supplies to help us out for our first pup. So now that this place is closed to walk thru and see a pet. You have to go online to find a pet, then fill out information for that pet and there is absolutely NO Guarantee that the pet will even be there for you to go see. Sounds like alot of work ( perhaps too much work) to go rescue a dog from this shelter. I can understand filling out paper work one time, but not every time for a dog that may not even be available. I just adopted a sweet little kitten from here! Her name is Lottie and she's an absolute doll. The adoption process was really simple. I've had some precious experience at a humane society in California, but nothing was as easy as this place! I roamed around a bit, found a couple of cats that I was interested in and then was given a buzzer and waited for a kind volunteer to bring me some of the cats/kittens to get a feel for their personalities. I totally fell in love with little Lottie. The rest of the adoption was easy, but the gal who helped me sign the forms didn't seem to be as excited or enthused by the whole ordeal as I did. She went through the information very quickly, and I left realizing that I had no idea what kind of food she had been eating or if they had any vet recommendations. (I checked on the form that I would like a recommendation). So far so good though, I've been checking out yelp for vets in my area so cross your fingers for us! read more

This place was not good at all. We went to meet a dog and inquire about adopting one. The staff were cold and short-tempered especially the woman at the desk, don't know her name but she is older and just very rude. We told her what dog we wanted to meet and she asked where we live and we said an apartment. We didn't k ow the dog wasn't fit for apartments, but instead of nicely explaining that, she just told us no in a rude tone and said to go look at the computer for other dogs. She told us we weren't a good fit and she was so rude! We ended up adopting a dog from somewhere else and it was a completely different experience, we got helped efficiently and effectively, they answered questions, told us info about our dog, and helped us get ready to take him home. I adopted 2 dogs from here. One of the dogs had major teeth issues that should have been addressed by the shelter before placing her up for adoption. I'm disappointed they cut corners with her care. Overall I think the humane society does a great job and take good care of the animals in their care. read more

The name "Oregon Humane Society" must be some kinda Huge JOKE !!!!! They need to rename themselves as "Oregon InHumane Inc." Motto 1. "We are No kill shelter, we let the new owner's do that job on their own penny" 2. "Pump out as many Unhealthy animals as possible to be adopted to make us look good" We are proud on our High adoption rate.... we let pets be adopted if they have a pulse. You new a dog , cat or a worthy place to volunteer? Look no further than the Oregon Humane Society. The Society is very well ran, super clean and really has the best interests of the animals in mind. The cat adoption rate is almost 100% (97-98) which is astronomical. Not sure what the puppy percentage is, didn't look at the pups or I would not have been able to leave empty handed I my scouting mission. If more people went here instead of to the back yard breeders - we would all be better off. They also have coupons for a heavy discount to get your pet spayed or neutered - just ask at the front desk. read more

No Kill Humane Society. 2 Thumbs up. We have adopted two pets here and they have always made sure that they are healthy enough to be adopted before sending them home with us. This place is run largely by volunteers so please be nice to the people (as well as animals) here. The only negative is that if you try to adopt or hold an animal you like by phone you will lose that pet. The phone typically goes to Voicemail which I suspect only gets answered later in the day so if you are reserving an animal via phone, you will probably be at the bottom of the list. Just go and drive there and look at your potential pet. Put a hold on them personally. They are family and should be treated as such. Heck wouldn't you love to meet your son's GF or daughters BF before bringing them into the family so you have a vote? Same thing here. read more

If you have a job, you can't adopt a pet. We spent hours of our time rushing to the humane society after work (4:30 or so) only to find out that the puppies on the website were already gone. This happened repeatedly until we realized their site has a 1 hour delay (they say it's updated in real time). If I could have called to check, I would have, but they won't answer questions about puppy availability. Here is why this policy is not only bad for people who want to adopt a pet, but also for the animals themselves: unemployed people and young adults are less likely to provide a good and safe home for pets. The "non-working" people who are able to adopt at OHS are less likely to be able to provide permanent homes because they move often and have to deal with new landlords, roommates, future spouses, and a variety of other factors that established working adults won't have to worry about. Most rescues vet animal guardians BEFORE handing them out. Instead, the OHS gives out puppies on a first come, first serve basis and only requires a simple 1-page questionnaire to determine if someone is a good fit for the pet. No home visit, no background check, nothing. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE IS THE WORST WAY TO FIND HOMES FOR PUPPIES! They say the site is updated in real time. They lie. Only 20 year-olds without day jobs can adopt pets because they are sent out first come, first serve, like donuts or a common commodity. Dear OHS: spend less money on corporate branding and more money on vetting pet guardians. read more
