Few things are more frustrating than a muscle spasm in your back that won't go away. I limped through a week with one and despite stretching, Epsom salt baths, and trying to roll out the muscles, I just could not get this away on my own. I knew that I needed a massage (sometimes that's the only thing that will get rid of these), but couldn't get in with somebody in a reasonable amount of time. I remembered passing a massage place in the mall and - after verifying on Yelp that they accept walk-ins -- I decided to give it a go. Located not far from the Macy's entrance, Oriental Chi has a surprisingly calming and very efficient setup. I explained that I wanted a back massage and was led to a table and draped with a sheet (in addition to the sheet, you stay fully clothed here). The masseuse got started and asked me about the pressure -- it was fine for me, but word to the wise that they are on the firmer pressure side at this place. Someone else began massaging my feet, and the masseuse asked me if I wanted a foot massage. "Um, no, just a back massage. Whichever the cheapest one was. I think it's the 30 minute one." He said something that sounded like 10 minute foot massage, which I supposed was included. It wasn't, and I ended up getting an extra service that I hadn't really wanted at an extra $10 cost. I was a little annoyed -- I thought I had been clear about what I wanted -- but apparently the language barrier has been a problem with others as well, so be forewarned. Like I mentioned, the pressure can be a little intense, even when I winced and asked them to go lighter -- and I am not one for a "floofy" massage, so that's saying something. I also didn't feel like they held onto a lot of muscles long enough to give the myofascial release that you often get from a trained massage therapist. All in all, I felt like they worked out the kink in my back for the time being, and I'll still try and get in for a "real" massage as soon as I can. But in a pinch, this place helps out. read more

This place is great for a really quick back massage. They are gruff, rough, and know how to hit the spot with all your shoulder and lower back knots. Their foot reflexology has been a hit or miss most times depending on the staff you go for. In the second location by Macy's, the nice lady has given me one of the best foot rubs in Ann Arbor since I prefer stronger massages with a lot of fine, digging motions and acupressure. Sometimes, I've been confronted with well-intentioned but mildly creepy attention from the male employees. I was told by one of them how people of my ethnicity are extremely attractive, and hand motioned a woman's hourglass figure and said how they're gorgeous while trying to compliment me too. First, Oriental Chi isn't closed. I just went there on Saturday. I've put in a request to get the listing back up and running but in the meantime, you can take my word for it. Anyway, my back was killing me while I was at the mall so I decided to give them a try for a little tune up. 20 minutes for $20. As others have said, they work with a sheet over you with all your clothes on, so it's pretty easy to get in and going and then back on the road. They use a good amount of pressure, lots of elbow work, to get through the several layers below. I definitely prefer the whole formal massage process that I'm previously used to, but for quickness and convenience when I'm really feeling tense this is a great alternative. In 20 minutes he did a nice job loosening things up for me. I ended up adding a little extra time for my feet since I've been running a lot lately and they were a little on the sore side. I didn't love the foot massage as it was more long strokes down my feet vs really digging in and massaging the muscles, so I'd probably not opt to go for that again in the future. But the shoulder/back work really loosened things up in a short period so I'd definitely stop by again for a tune up when I'm in the mall. read more

This place, I believe, holds a winning margin due to the convenience, quality, and price-point. I typically get the "back-express" massage, which run 12 or 18 minutes ($12 and $18, respectively), however, there are other bargains for the longer massages (it seriously goes below the dollar a minute rate). Now, it's not a spa and it is located in a mall so you'll hear the sounds of people walking past CPK and Chipotle, but trust me, one sit in that funny-looking chair in the hands of Tony-- that's my guy!--and all of that melts away. I am just as shocked as you may be by this admission... I have had some of the best massages of my life at a no-appointment-necessary, no-introductions-invited, no-need-to-disrobe spot in the Briarwood Mall. *pause for reaction* Oriental Chi is a no-frills, open-face storefront that you have probably passed a gazillion times without much thought; however, if you find yourself full of knots and kinks from the stress of holiday crowds and shopping, I suggest you stop in! After quickly perusing a short list of services that boil down to about $1/minute massage and deciding whether or not to add foot reflexology, you are quickly ushered to one of four massage tables that are separated by low barriers. No introductions are offered, and you are not interviewed about areas of tension, medical history, preferred pressure, etc. After shedding your coat, shoes, and belt, you lie face down where you remain for the duration of your massage. Despite the lack of communication, the massage therapist deftly locates your sore spots, working them into submission with deep long stokes, use of pressure points, and stretching. Be forewarned, these are deep pressure massages, so I would skip this joint if you prefer a lighter hand. If you request reflexology, this will be performed at the same time as your massage, by a second therapist. For me, the combination is somewhat overwhelming, so I generally skip this service. Chair massages are also available, permitting more privacy than those offered at kiosks throughout the mall. The drawbacks to Oriental Chi are really due to the fact that this establishment is indeed located in a mall, which you are occasionally reminded of when the screams of excited children are heard over the soothing music tinkling through the shop. Second, a blast of cool air sometimes rushes into the store, since the shop is located near the doors to the mall exterior. Wearing a long-sleeve shirt improves this situation. This is a no-frills, no-appointment-needed, and even no-English-needed kind of place where you can signal your way into a massage appointment. These massages are deep-pressure/deep-tissue (even more so than most non-ethnic places) and if your body doesn't prefer a strong hand, avoid it. If it does though, you're in for the most wonderful experience! The massages can be had for anywhere from a half hour to 90 minutes and you leave your clothes on. The masseuse cover you with a sheet as you lie face down on the massage bed and then proceeds to massage the sore spots in your feet, hands, back and neck. The pressure can feel a bit too much at times, so feel free to let out a welp or a whimper! There's no shame in that. :) The place is in a somewhat noisy spot and it's near the mall entrance, so you can get chilled by the occasional draft in winter. As others have said, long sleeves will help during cold weather. All in all, I still find this an awesome experience and it's definitely something you should try out once. read more

I did not enjoy this place. I was pressured into getting a foot massage. This way, I would get the regular massage and the foot massage and pay double. The person that did the foot massage did not seem to know what to do, it was not reflexology, it was just light touch The man who did my massage was rough and did not understand me. He placed so much pressure on me that I was in extreme pain and am still in severe pain 24hrs later. He also did not ask to massage my buttocks area and it was uncomfortable and painful. I went here yesterday with my husband on Saturday. We both opted for the 20 min/20 dollar massage. Well, during the massage, I was told that I was going to get a complimentary footrub as well which was a surprise as I was expecting only a shoulders and back massage. During the massage, the man kept talking to me to ask me if I wanted to get a different massage or a longer massage. I couldn't really understand a lot of what he was saying since his English wasn't very good and I was trying to relax during a massage, not get upgraded to another type of massage. He said something like "20 minutes, 20 dollars or 40 minutes 40 dollars?" I said, "What? No, I just want the 20 minute massage." He was whispering back and forth to his co-worker the entire time when he wasn't calling me Lady. The massage itself? It was OK, pretty rough, elbows on pressure points and slapping mostly but when I left I still had the same knot in the lower right side of my back. That's not even the worst part. Anyway, we go to leave and I'm standing at the register waiting to pay. They wait until my husband comes over, they don't tell us the price at the register, we don't even see what they are charging until they had already charged my husband's credit card for 80 dollars. I was SHOCKED. Who charges 2 dollars a minute for a walk-in massage at the mall? This is a much higher rate than most nicer spas would charge and the price was totally unexpected and ridiculous. I left feeling very angry and like they pulled a scam on us since all of the signs clearly say that a 20 minute massage costs 20 dollars. They deliberately charged us double the price listed on the signs while initially pretending the additional massage service they were offering was complimentary. Not a good massage and bad experience with staff. Sign clearly states that a 20 minute massage included back, neck, shoulders, hands. I even asked before the massage and was assured I was correct. Didn't happen. I then asked about it afterward and was given information that contradicted their sign. Was given bad information over the phone also before we arrived. I was told John is very good and asked for him over the phone. Was assured he was there. When we arrived we were told he didn't work that particular day. Was I lied to or was it an honest mistake??? Had 2 massages over 2 days at Oriental chi. On Friday night just before closing time and sat afternoon. I had the 20 min back express and it was quite good. It hurt but there was also relief so I went back on sat for a full 90 min of total body relaxation. The latter was painful and not relaxing at all. I like deep tissue massages because of my scarred muscles from radiotherapy but this was painful. I did not stop him because I know that it can help me feel better the next day. That has happened before in San Francisco. This time is different. It did not feel better. The muscles on my back where he was digging into felt bruised and swollen today. I probably need ibuprofen today. I would recommend the chair massages for a short period of time and be upfront about how much pressure you can take. At one point, I was tensing up in anticipation of the push and had to focus on my breathing to control the pain. Not as relaxing as it ought to be. read more

I walked right in for a 20-minute massage and was seated in the massage chair immediately. This was probably the best professional massage I've ever had. The therapist knew where all of my tension was, and the amount of pressure was perfect. Usually, I feel massage therapists are too gentle with me, but here she didn't hold back. I felt very loose and relaxed after. I also like the convenience of keeping my clothes on and not having to deal with messy massage oil. I have been here before and had a really good experience with the masseuse name John. Then I came back and had a young man who didn't seem to know what he's doing. I went last week because of tension in my neck hoping to get that resolved. Instead I left feeling like I was beat up bad. I had a lot of pain throughout my neck and upper back for days. I don't know the name of the man that worked on me but he was Asian, had a flat top crew cut, fairly big size for his short height. I repeatedly said stop you're pushing too hard, but he didn't seem to understand me or really care. I should've just got up off the table and left but I didn't. That was my mistake. Joshua was AMAZING! He found all my sore spots and used pressure points with massage to release tension in: my back - It cracked 8 times! (btw, my body cracks naturally- he was not attempting to crack it) AND my hips! which are almost always painful because of an injury from when i was young and fell on some stairs. I cannot recommend this enough. BTW, this was my first full massage and i am totally convinced i would not want a western style massage (since the only one I've had was neck and shoulders and i felt no where near the long lasting relief that i am still feeling from this acupressure/ reflexology style). I go here on my lunch break (they offer short times and 9 out of 10 times they can get me in right away) or on days that I can't get into my membership-based massage studio. Sindy is a wonder, she knows right where my problem areas are just by a quick touch assessment. I have had great experiences with everyone else there so far as well. They are straight to the point, efficient and good quality. If you are looking for relief with candles, low lights and ambiance this is not what you are looking for. My first massage here was a 15 minute massage in one of their funky chairs, and it was amazing. Soon I was coming back almost monthly for their Combo #2, which is 40 minutes back/shoulders/neck and 20 minutes on the feet. I sit at a desk all day and have terrible back pain-these massages are the best. I have since been to more "professional" massage places, and I can't stand how each masseuse tries to talk to you-just let me rest!! At Oriental Chi, however, they don't say much, and that is actually preferred. After having been to other places, I can say for a fact that this place has the best value and actually helps me more than any other place. I cannot wait to move closer so I don't have to make the 40 minute drive here (I actually still drive that far to go!). Another great perk is you don't need to make an appointment, you just show up. Was in the mall returning a few things and decided to try them out. My massage was so terrible it's hard for me to believe that the young man that massaged me was a trained massage therapist. The next day I was in more pain than I was before I stopped in. It's been 6 days and I'm still in pain. The young man was also sick or had an allergy issue as well. For the entire 60 minutes he sniffed and coughed. I wanted to stop the massage so bad and ask for someone else. I can't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Not sure who reported this place as closed. I was there yesterday and they did wonders for a knot that I had in my back. I go there about once weekly. It is luck of the draw though on if the person who works on you will match you preferences. Also if they ask to give you a free sample you can take the sample if you want but always say no to being charged more. Most of them don't speak english very well so saying no to the sample is always the best way to not deal with the barrier. read more
