For New Years Eve 2017, we wanted to make some homemade kimbap (Korean-style sushi-type rolls) and decided to come to Oriental Food Mart to grab most of the ingredients. The only downside was that carrots are sold in packs as opposed to individually, so we ended up for more carrots than we need. Otherwise, it's a small compacted store but it has most of the main ingredients and lots of fun finds throughout the store. I stocked up on some delicious Korean-style Cheetos snack which is my absolute favorite, try it if you haven't already! (A little pricey at $1.99 per bag but still worth it!) If you come in through the store, the refrigerated section is to the right side of the store, along the walls. Then there's some snacks and dry food in the middle, with sauces and tools near the back of the store. The cashier counter is to the left when you enter. There's some parking along the street, we usually just parallel park right outside the store. read more

This is the best grocery store to get all my essential Korean ingredients and even fun Korean foods. It is so hard to find Korean pears and Asian sweet potatoes and I feel so lucky that they have it here. I like their various selection of Kimchi and tofu. They have most of the meats needed for any Korean recipe along with many seafood options. They try to keep up with the 'trending' chips and instant Ramen from Asia, so its been enjoyable trying them out. They also have a large selection of nori, seaweed, hot pepper flakes and paste, soybean paste, noodles, sauces, and seasonings. Love the owners and well. Very sweet! read more

I finally found a Korean mart in Madison! I'm so happy!! I was looking for an asian grocery store for several days here and started to doubt that there would be a store carrying the Korean foods, drinks and snacks that would make my sister feel a little less homesick being so far away from NC but then I found this place! Yay! Don't let the front of the store scare you away, I realize it makes it seem as though it'll be dirty and cave-like, but it is anything but! The store is actually pretty clean and well organized with a large variety of Korean foods (packaged, frozen, and a small selection of fresh foods!) as well as household items. That being said, if you are looking for other asian products, you may not find it here; but if you are solely looking for Korean products, this is the place! Firstly, it's the first place I've seen a variety of ramen, korean buckwheat noodles (Naengmyeon), black bean noodles (jajangmyeon), rice cake and ddukbokkie, kimchi (other asian grocery stores in the area only carry one brand that doesn't look too great...) AND much more like bulgogi, korean ice cream, porridge and yogurt! In terms of Korean products in the area, this place is a goldmine. Granted, I only checked out Asian Midway, Yue-Wah and Hmoob but their selection was seriously disappointing. Sure, this food mart is not the best korean store I've been to, but it provides the locals with the Korean products I couldn't find anywhere else. I also wanted to note that the owners here are very friendly! Once I walked in they immediately greeted me and wanted to help me as best they could. This type of service was such a breath of fresh air compared to the service I had at the other asian grocery stores where I was completely ignored nor greeted or acknowledged in any way. I'm honestly just glad to have found a mart that carries familiar foods my sister can enjoy. Thank goodness they have their neon "Korean Market" sign, or else I'd still be searching! Just a note that they do accept credit cards (Visa/MC, not AmEx) but with a $10 minimum. read more

I've been meaning to make kimchi fried rice for the longest time, but I haven't been able to find kimchi at any of the grocery stores on the West side. I guess I should have expected that... Anyway, I finally gave in and trekked over to the East side for my Asian fixin'. [I think two of the three Asian markets in Madison are literally within one mile of each other...and none of them are on the West side. :(] The market is very small. They carry mostly frozen and dried goods. The fresh produce section is limited to a few types of fruit and onions, I think? There really isn't any rhyme or reason to how things are placed around the store and I had to walk around a few times before I found the kimchi I was looking for. I would have picked up a few other things, but contrary to the Asian markets I'm used to in California and on the East coast, the items here are marked up quite a bit. For example, the packet of udon noodles I bought for $3.99 at the Oriental Food Mart would have cost me maybe $1.99 at home. The takuwan would have cost me maybe $2.99 instead of $4.99. I just couldn't bring myself to pay so much extra for something I knew I could get for a much lower price elsewhere. (Yea, yea I know we are in the Midwest and supply/demand doesn't really pan out in my favor.) Overall a decent find in the Madison area though. It will tide me over for now. read more

I went with one of my friends a couple of months ago and they had so much stuff! I found everything I wanted and more! The baked goods were remarkable, the selections of frozen food was incredible and the owner is such a nice guy! I bought about $80 worth and he helped me carry it to the car. It's squished into a little store with everything you might need, but I find the prices of packaged foods (like ramen and frozen dumplings) to be a little too high sometimes. My wife loves Japanese food, and this place very recently expanded. They have a great selection of fresh, frozen, and packaged foods. This is where we get our rice, nori (dried sea weed), Kewpie mayo, and togarashi (Japanese hot pepper) for homemade spicy tuna rolls. Mmmmm! Of particular note, you can get a $20 variety sashimi platter if you pre-order and pick it up after their Tuesday night (7pm-ish) delivery. Their is always some tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, but there is often some mystery stuff as well. I highly recommend it. The owner and staff are extremely helpful and friendly. read more

In all the years I have lived here, I've referred to this place as 'The Korean Shop', if only because of the neon hangul in the window (which I covet slightly). This little place has all kinds of good Asian frozen foods, kimchee for all, tea, fruit gummies, and lots of cool kitchen and cooking supplies. I go here specifically for the Sasum Deer frozen potstickers, the Korean chilies, and they sell EAR CLEANERS (mimikaki)- ever tried one? It feels goood... :3 They usually sell Acacia gum, as well as Xylitol and such... I highly recommend either of these for when you have bad breath. Staff are nice and friendly, and check out the case for some grab-and-go items. :D read more

Koreans and Korean food lovers rejoice! This is your one stop shop for all your needs. How have I lived here for 2.5 years and never stopped by this place but have gone to literally every other Asian supermarket in town. I wanted to cry after my first look around, everything I've struggled looking for is here in terms of Korean items. Sure they aren't a large scale like hmart but they have the basics of everything you would need to make a home cooked Korean meal. I found a variety of kimchi, dried anchovies, ice creams that I could never buy from h mart in Chicago cause I knew they would melt by the time I got home but now I can get them only blocks from my place! Frozen squid, variety of noodles, ramen, cookware, sauces, several brands of rice. The owners are kind and the shop is clean and well organized. I'm so happy to have found this place. I just wish I had found it sooner! read more

I honestly don't know how to rate this place. There are some great prices and interesting finds here. If you need any type of Asian sauce, it doesn't matter how obscure, they likely have it. And ramen for days at a significant discount from standard grocery stores. The selection rivals some of the smaller stores in San Francisco. And you cannot beat the selection and prices of produce aimed at Asian cooking. They have plenty of Korean, Japanese and Thai products as well as a strangely out of place aisle of products from the United States. But it is dirty. Really dirty. Questionably within health codes dirty. And the tanks that hold seafood are in dire need of cleaning. With that said, I love shopping here for anything canned or in a bottle, but fresh food I pass on, even though there is likely very little difference in actual cleanliness. But first impression is everything and this place does not present a healthy clean one. Authentic? Definitely! Dirty, yes. Shop here? Depends on your level of comfort but you cannot beat the selection and the folks who work there are always friendly. Worth a look any day. read more

Owners are fantastic!!! They have all the Korean ingredients you could need, including the cuts of meat (pork belly, thin sliced ribeye, thin sliced pork shoulder). They even have imported sides from Korea. Even the kimchi they source out of Chi-town is delicious. Its the one and only true Korean market in Dane county. read more

Great market for quality Korean products. It's clean, well-organized, and has a variety of things from food to kitchen supplies. The one reason why it is 3 stars instead of 4 is that everything is too expensive. I found that I would buy most things from other places and just come here for kimchi and some other obscurely korean products I would be willing to pay a bit more for. read more

I live near this place and have gotten to know it well. It is run by a Korean family, and focuses mostly on Korean food items (fresh produce section is small but good quality, lots of refrigerated and frozen food, and a nice selection of dry goods, including good quality rice) but also has a smattering of Japanese snack/grocery items, Asian cooking tools, dishes and Korean gifts. The interior is clean and decently organized. Things are not exactly cheap here, but the quality makes it worth it. A heads up - they take credit cards, but only for purchases over $10. read more
