    Olives and other pickled treats

I went here looking for Turkish coffee. The store is small yet fully stocked with anything you may be missing from back home. They had a few brands of Turkish coffee and I went for Cafe Najj with cardamom. Omg!! This coffee has changed my life! I was assisted by Hilda who I had a brief discussion with about coffee. She saw my reservations about trying the cardamom coffee and looked to see if they had any I could sample. Unfortunately they didn't but her genuine concern and kindness won me over to take a chance. I hadn't been to this store in about 5 years and I'm glad it's still there in light of how Brooklyn is changing. I'm happy to report I'm going to patronize this store more often, especially since they have better customer service skills than other stores on that street.

Small cute Middle Eastern grocery, spices are fresh and in big totes and barrels, hard to find pantry items are here. Nice prices and owners!,, stock piled candied ginger, cinnamon sticks, Za'aar spices, dried cherries, roasted cashews, etc etc!! Great pickled veggie selections and olives!

Despite Oriental Pastry & Grocery size, you could spend an hour asking about the different varieties of bulgur, sampling a free chunk of sweet halvah or salty fresh cheese, wondering what in the world the seaweed-like stuff in a jar marked "Fancy Green Zaatar," and even stumbling over familiar products that seem way out of place (like Aunt Jemima pancake mix, for example). At Oriental, sweets are the specialty, and free samples flow. They'll cut generous portions of baklava; pistachio-packed Turkish delight; or kounafa, a syrup-soaked, salty-sweet Middle Eastern take on cheesecake. This place doesn't really engage in fancy display; in fact, the sweets department is virtually hidden in front of the belly-dancing instructional tapes. Some sweets are disguised as fruits: there are several kinds of sugary dates, and there is also the dried apricot paste known in Arabic as kamar al-din, an ancient ancestor of Fruit Roll-Ups By the way, the Oriental folks also do catering, so if you're planning a big party in your hotel room while you're in the city, consider ordering a stuffed lamb (rice, pine nuts, raisins and, of course, meat) for $310. You'll want to call the store a few days in advance (and check your hotel's policy on in-room lamb feasts).

So terribly sad to hear of the tragic death of one of the owners by car accident. May he rest in peace.

Nicely-scented shop with a good selection, but I prefer Sahadi's and Damascus.

I still haven't been to Sahadi's, but I can't imagine what it could have that Oriental doesn't.

They also have a vast amount of goodies, specifically chips, cookies and candy from Japan, Korea and China. There is also a section with stationary items and toys for all ages. The market has a small seating area which is great for grabbing a quick bite or soft serve ice cream, in my case, near the ice cream station. I love black sesame ice cream and put my colleague on to it, and she loved it as well. It was a nice treat on a hot 80 degree day in NYC. This space is in a great location in Cobble Hill, not far from transit and shops. The best part is it's clean and well lit. Will return to try some of their prepared foods and packaged salty items.

Hashi feels like an actual grocery store with aisles of Asian goods. While it's still a bit pricey, it's the next best thing without traveling to Chinatown. My favorite part of their ready to eat hot foods/sushi section. I decided to get a Sashimi/Sushi Combo ($23), which I also got to enjoy right away. They have a dining area for you as well. Plus, you get 50% off at Fujissa located inside with $10+ purchase at Hashi Market (just show your receipt when you order). And don't miss out on the 50% off discount after 7pm for the hot foods/sushi, which is an hour earlier than Ten Ichi Mart.

Walk up counter available for ordering a variety of sandwiches. I had a Caprese sandwich. Was neither here nor there.. Nothing stood out. Would benefit from a really nice balsamic glaze/better tomatoes/lottts of fresh basil. But the service was friendly and I have a feeling their meat-based sandwiches go harder. The selection of items is and charm inside the store is unbeatable, though!

However, for their extensive selection of quality Italian pasta, you're going to want to cook it first. Maybe pair it with the olive oil, artichokes, tuna, dressings, sauces, mustards, broths, etc. A special bonus is the adorable array of kitchen tools that look like pasta. Like the conchiglie lemon squeezer, penne pan holder, and the mafaldine kitchen ties. This review may be spoiling someone's gift coming up, but such is life. All that aside, I'd still come in if it was a panini counter and nothing more. There is an extensive menu of options that I am only starting to make my way through. My first choice was the Parma, which is a generous amount of homemade pork shoulder, fresh tomato, truffle pecorino cheese cream, and a little drizzle of truffle oil as well. It was hot, it was rich, it was delicious. It came recommended by the lovely woman behind the counter, who was very sweet, if not very talkative. There's even a backyard and seating area if you don't want to take it home. If I had any criticism for Tavola, it's minor: I would like some acid on that sandwich to cut the richness (some pickled red onions would go a long way), and I would like everything in the market to be about 20% less expensive, because I want it all and I could really only afford a sandwich and some very nice pasta that I'm excited to make.
