This sushi restaurant has been a family favorite for years, and they seem to have recently separated themselves as the purveyor of the freshest sushi in southeast Louisiana. I couldn't believe how tender and on point every seafood item we ordered was. Que ilusión the octopus, the tuna, the crab... Every ingredient on point. Exquisite. Not to mention the staff are polite and attentive. Very pretty interior with plenty of natural light in the relaxed freret street atmosphere.

The service, food, and ambiance were all amazing. Great restaurant and great food! The menu was a little confusing at first but the food was excellent!

Everyone who works here is ABOVE friendly and it's the best omakaze option in the city. The sushi is incredibly fresh. And unlike some other options in the city you can customize your food order. It can get a little noisy because it's popular and has a lot of weekly regulars. Try the blind sake option!

THE WEBSITE JUST SELLS GIFT-CARDS. DOES NOT STATE THAT THESE CANNOT BE USED IN THE RESTAURANT!

My father purchased a gift card online on their website for 75$ to give me for Christmas. Came into eat, and they refused to accept my gift card. Turns out they only accept these cards for online takeout orders, however that is not stated anywhere online. Who gets a gift card just to order takeout. The waitress told me this has been a reoccurring issue. Feels like they need to state the terms of their gift card, or maybe accept their own gift card. I feel like I got scammed. I am a college student, that cannot normally afford to go out and eat, and intended to pay with the giftcard. Now I can't afford groceries for the rest of the month. I attached the photos from where on their OWN website the gift card was purchased. It does not state ANYWHERE that these gift cards cannot be used in the restaurant. Feels like a scam.

Had some of the worst service here which is such a bummer because the food was actually really good. We were celebrating a birthday with a group and I arrived a few minutes early. I offered to wait at the bar and get a beverage to which they insisted that I just go to the table. They would not take any drink orders until the entire party arrived and then it took over an hour to get our drinks. I wouldn't have even noticed the long wait times and poor service if I could have gotten a drink to start. I had the cucumber and crab salad for my appetizer and sashimi sampler for my dinner which all tasted great. The rest of our group ordered their own sushi rolls which all came out together on a crammed platter, despite the fact that we were not sharing or eating anything "family style" that night. Our server was hardly around all night and whenever she was she would only take half the tables order before jetting away! I really wanted to love this place but the terrible service turned me away.

Seated: 6:45. Order drinks (bottle of beer and: 6:50 Waiter AWOL til 7:05 7:05: order appetizers and entrees. Ask about drinks. 7:15: appetizers arrive. Ask about drinks again 7:25: entrees arrive. 7:30: bottle of beer arrives. Cancel order for old fashioned and decide to go to Cure. It shouldn't take nearly 40 minutes for a beer to arrive. I was excited to try the Ume Old Fashioned and the Tears of Montelobos. Instead I'm trying neither. We've been here many times, but this was sufficiently disappointing that I don't expect we'll return anymore.

Such an amazing local sushi spot! Even though I don't eat sushi I've been going here for years since I was at Tulane because everyone loves it so much and they make an amazing chicken teriyaki plate that you can see in picture two. And basically no matter how full you are, DO NOT skip out on the banana tempura for dessert! They serve it drizzled in honey and it's just fantastically sweet. You can really see and taste the craft in how they prepare their dishes... and there cocktails! Plus it's such an affordable delicious meal too! Plus, I really enjoy seeing all the staff because a couple of people at the front of the house have been there for years and are so kind and energetic and you can tell they just love running this restaurant.

Not sure if it's covid or seasonal but I wanted to cry looking at the menu last week No eggplant app No squid app All the rolls changed My heart came wanting certain things and definitely left a little sad Nonetheless everything we got was fresh and delicious but the menu changes left me a little depressed Is it covid? Is it seasonal? We will never know

Origami (banana!) plus California and Crunchy rolls
    William L.

Origami was an early settler in the Freret Street renaissance, moving into a space formerly occupied by a rowdy bar. Service and sushi are up to par with other New Orleans places, but without some of the heavy glitz in some of the larger places around town. The decor is predominated by light woods and is refreshingly spare and modern, even after nearly a decade. Recently an outdoor deck was installed, but the big hardwood booths and sitting at the bar are somehow more conducive to eating here. For cold weather, the soba and udon noodle bowls are OUTSTANDING choices, with a base salted just right and served steaming hot. Hot tea comes in its own traditional ceramic pot that keeps it warm. If you like bananas, try the eponymous Origami Roll, a basic eel roll with an inch-tall banana slice that's been tempura fried and set atop each piece. I'm not sure how the eel and the banana complement each other, but those little banana cylinders are sublime. The sushi slices serve as the perfect base by keeping the bottom of the banana bits from turning soggy. This is one of my favorite banana concoctions in town--and this is the same town that originated Bananas Foster. Some of the other rolls have names that harken back to when Origami opened. There's a Chocolate City roll that goes back to a controversy three mayors ago and a FEMA roll named for either the "heckuva job" Federal agency or the temporary trailers that were ubiquitous in the aftermath of the 2005 Katrina levee failures. Origami should consider creating a new roll, the "NFC No Call Playoff Roll" where the little piece of yellow tail stays firmly tucked inside no matter what you do to it

Kenji Omakase will be a new annual special occasion go to. Japanese Omakase experience and style, a one of a kind food experience where every course is a harmonious blend of flavors, textures and eye appeal. The sushi chef talks you through each course after he places it on you platter. I asked if these were supposed to be eaten by hand if you wanted to, he agreed most people traditionally eat these that way. The flavors were buttery and tangy, textures delicate and sometimes a small crunch with fried scallions etc. We had tuna, ocean trout that was Similar to salmon but a different shade of orange, scallops and finished with waygu beef. It was amazing with each course the flavors seem to improve. A great experience, if you are any type of sushi fan or even on the fence, this could easily make you a sushi lover. I give this a complete recommendation. Try Kenji you will be very happy you did. The ambiance was fun also traditional Japanese. I may have Mis-named a few photos but know they are all just incredible journeys across your palate, hard to describe, melting with texture and flavors.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure if I agree with the current ratings of 4.7 this place has (as of Feb 2,…read more2025.) To me, based on our experience tonight, it's none other than a super over-hyped sushi restaurant that only has a high end feel to it. Service: was decent. We arrived at the place 11 minutes before our reservation time of 5pm. Since my daughter works in the restaurant industry, as a politeness, we didn't go inside until 4:59pm even though one of the workers came to the door and unlocked it at 4:51pm. Once inside he knew we were the 5pm reservation. He was polite but somehow his whole demeanor lacked friendliness. Menu: Even though the drink menu was an actual physical one, the food menu is online. How strange. After scanning the QR code, we were hoping to see a good selection of food items. But to our surprise, the food menu is/was very small. Actually this place's main thing is nothing but "omakase" where if you choose to order from the a la cart section, the choices are so limited (we were here in town from Denver, CO. After eating some deep-fried stuff for the last few days, we felt that we were truly healthy food or salad depleted; just to clarify, we didn't show up to to this restaurant just to eat salad because after all, this is a sushi restaurant. We love sushi. And yet we were hoping for some decently sized salad. Unfortunately none is/was found on the menu. I even personally asked the guy to see if the sushi chef could whip up something but he gave me a nonchalant no.) We still believed this place could do some magical things so we ordered a bowl of miso soup, oyster tarter (lobster tarter replacement), tuna, salmon and yellowtail nigiris. Miso soup, for the price of $10, was extremely small. Also the entire soup was lukewarm to a point where the center of the small tofu pieces was still cold. Ugh... All the nirigis tasted fresh but I didn't care for the sweet sauce (mainly used for unagi/eel) on the salmon nigiri. Why?? I've never had a salmon nigiri prepared this way.) The only item that was impressive was the oyster tarter (not on the menu as this was the replacement item for the lobster tarter.) This was excellent where we could have easily ordered another one but at this point, we didn't want to spend anymore $$ as all items on the menu are not cheap here. We are a fan of yuzu. The only dessert item (once again, there is only one dessert on the menu) is yuzu tart or something like that. One of the sushi chefs informed us though that the online menu hadn't been quite updated for this so he said it would be a yuzu sponge cake type thing. We decided to give it a try. This, however, failed to impress us either as it was a very much average sponge cake, nothing more at all. We didn't order any drinks besides the water so the final bill was about $75 with some change. Well, tonight's overall experience of ours didn't justify this amount in any way possible. There was another sushi restaurant that had the similar ratings with similar location (when we searched it yesterday.) Maybe we should have chosen that one instead. Disappointed....

We started with cocktails which had fun twists in flavor. We ordered the Omakase and upgrade one fish dish to the Wagu beef ($50). I dug in, forgetting to take a photo. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasty, including some unique ingredients like ginger imported from Japan. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough. If the chef is reading reviews... switch the miso soup with a mini-ramen to give the meal more substance.
