I used to eat here a lot when I was in my graduate program in the early 2000s and am glad it's stuck around through the years. I went for dinner last night and have to say I think it's better than it was 20 years ago. The fish is so fresh and the rolls prepared so well. The noodle salad was plentiful with fresh cucumbers and carrots and a hint of sesame oil. And always get the fresh wasabi anytime you see it available. The owners are so sweet and engaging. When I lived in New Orleans, I visited and ordered delivery from Mikomoto regularly. It was fun to take my sushi loving daughter there for lunch when we were in town. We were seated immediately and quickly received our drink orders. We decided on our order and the food came out fast, perfect for those on a lunch break or otherwise needing a quick meal. The miso soup was as expected, and I was thrilled to have two of my old favorites on the menu - the deluxe roll and jalapeño madness. Some nigiri and a snow crab Naruto completed our meal. Gross and such poor quality. Rolls are okay because the fish is hiding behind all the toppings but the sushi and sashimi is disgusting worse than supermarket sushi. Definitely one of the best sushi stops in New Orleans. My Yelp Bestie put me on to them some years ago and recently I have been visiting them more and more. My go to rolls are the Metairie and Philadelphia Roll with no green onions, and I like to add the eel sauce to both rolls. Every time I visit the rolls and fresh and tasty. On my most recent visit I tried the Deluxe Roll with tempura shrimp and cream cheese inside seaweed and rice with show crab, tuna, salmon, tempura batter, avocado, pink sauce and eel sauce on top DELICIOSO! I can't believe I've never reviewed Mikimoto. I've ordered takeout from them so many times, and my orders have always been accurate and tasty. This was my first sit down visit and it was really nice. I met a friend for lunch on a chilly day and arrived first. The wait staff was on top of their game and got me squared away and settled at the table of my choice. I ordered a hot green tea and sipped while I waited. When my sweet friend arrived, I ordered a rainbow roll. Our orders were delivered shortly and my tea was refilled. The dynamite roll was completely inedible -- they loaded it with an absurd amount of wasabi that overpowered everything and burned my mouth out. I'm all for a little heat, but this was just disrespectful. The rainbow roll was also a disappointment: no avocado, which is basically a crime for that kind of roll. It felt dry and incomplete. We did date night here and it was honestly just ok for us. We both ordered water, got the who dat poppers, the deluxe roll and the uptown roll. The who dat poppers weren't good nor were they prepared the same as in the pictures from reviews. They didn't have much flavor other than the (definitely jarred or bagged) chili sauce they were smothered in. That's really all you tasted. In pictures there is no sauce and it looks like some melted cheese, we did t have any cheese on ours. We just weren't a fan. The uptown roll was good, a lot of sauce which my husband liked. I prefer raw, but for a cooked roll it was good. The deluxe roll was good but it seemed to lack something. Maybe a little more eel sauce or lemon zest. Idk, it was just a little bland. The app and 2 rolls totaled $50. Which isn't bad for sushi in the city, that's pretty normal pricing. Our waitress was nice, not super informative but she was very nice. Mikimoto sits on Carrollton Avenue in small unassuming cinder block building. Inside there's an intimate space, but under pandemic conditions about a third, including the small sushi bar itself, has been given over to assembly and staging of delivery and to-go orders, which is what this review is based upon. A variety of appetizers are offered. Beef Nigimaki and Beef Asparagus Maki are tasty wraps of beef with a dark sauce served in a portion that looks a little small but ends up being filling. The vegetable tempura is light and not greasy, and recommended. The udon soups are excellent especially on a cold night. Check out the large selection of house specialty rolls, in particular the mango, Bayou, the NOFD, and the box combination rolls. Do peruse the menu, there are many choices including some with cream cheese. Salmon skin roll is tasty, but expect it to be salty and a little dry (which is how it's supposed to be). Crunchy roll is a family favorite, mild and not fishy. Probably would be more accurate to say this is a four star place for most diners, but the noodle salad, which seems to be an exclusive recipe at Mikimoto, is such a favorite of two-thirds of this reviewer's family that it's five stars in their book. I love their sushi, their udon noodles, and like (but didn't love) the fried rice. There's a cramped parking lot, but also plenty of additional parking down Forshey, the side street. After placing a to-go order and arriving a few minutes early, I masked up and sat down inside to wait. The staff is a marvel to watch as they assemble bags (and for larger orders, boxes) to go. Use the drive through with caution: this food, especially soups, weigh much more than your Big Mac and fries. I once had a near disaster with bag that started to slip the not-so-surly bonds of a hungry driver's arms and make its way to back down to the surface of the Earth, i.e the concrete under my car. A last second grab and juggle saved our car's carpets from becoming a lifetime reminder of that time I ordered seafood udon. read more

I went with another Thunderbird Alumnus (an international business school and we both had careers in international sales development) and now visit NOLA eateries to reminisce about our travels and eating experiences... We visited Mikimoto, and for me, it was my first visit. My first trip to Japan was in 1978, and I had initially covered Europe and Latin America in my first ten years. The ambiance of Mikimoto's was reminiscent of my first visit to Japan. Small, compact dining area getting us menus and beverages within two minutes of sitting down. The Attentive service, which gave us time to review the offerings, had our orders, and we were off. I had worked in American companies - that sold food service equipment and had been involved with IMFA (international Manufacturers of Foodservice Association), At the start of expanding abroad - the saying was - "the US exports blue jeans, Rock N' roll, and fast food, and which had set up the path to expanding American fast food to be sold to global markets. Mikimoto had a great presentation of food; we had gone there for Sushi and stuck to that offering. My Sushi was fresh and met all the standards I had known in Japan of sushi. Picked this up for dinner last night. Unfortunately for me, I spent about $50 on extremely mediocre sushi. I am a sushi connoisseur as I eat it about 2-3 times a week and love trying new places. I got the Joe Burrow roll, which sounded delicious. I really go for rolls that have fresh salmon and spicy salmon or tuna in it. This luckily had both. When I got the roll, there was no spicy salmon in it just regular salmon on top and inside the roll and it was beyond fishy. I also got an order of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail sushi. The salmon was tough and not melt in your mouth. The tuna was pretty good and the yellowtail was so stringy that I couldn't even finish a piece of it. I also got the clear soup, which was delicious. I ended up throwing away 75% of it. Overall, a complete waste of $50. I'm very disappointed. read more

Is New Orleans native and have always loved this restaurant. Not sure if the owner has changed or if it's under new management, but everything was disappointing. Prices have gone up and quality has gone down. Service was terrible. Just some perspective though, I did place a to go order through the phone so that may have made a difference. My favorite items in the past were the mango mania roll, the tuna tataki, and the jalapeño hạmachi. All the items I received did not meet expectations and I am probably not coming back. They run a well oiled machine here. Great customer service and efficient. My Super Crunchy roll was one of the better rolls I've had in my sushi career. One of the best sushi places in Nola that I have found. It's a small restaurant so seating is limited. It's not a fancy place it feels like your at your auntie's house. They also run to-go orders. You can do drive through or take out which is just as busy as dining in. In my opinion they have a huge sushi selection that's more salmon options. When I go I like to also get one new sushi roll that I have not gotten or I ask my server which is their favorite and I order it. I will say if you have not been in a long time the prices have gone up but it's just like anywhere else so don't be surprised. The edamame is a good portion that is good to share. I have dined here several times throughout the years and this sushi restaurant does not fail to delight! This week I brought a friend to lunch, I told her all about the delicious noodle salad they gave diners complimentary like the miso soup is often given at other restaurants but they no longer do that. Bummer but we enjoyed our lunch, regardless. We shared the day's special fresh Tora Roll and the Mango Madness Roll, as well as the Poke Bowl. The Poke was a little soggy but I must say, it was delicious. I believe they have more drive-through customers than they have dining in because the left side of the restaurant is a mess of to-go boxes. (Someone should curtain that off or at the very least, add shelving to make it more organized and presentable.)
