Having been to Italy, Originale's is the closest restaurant that even compares to the taste of the sandwiches made in Italy. I've had the Nonni and the Classic Piadina. Both are packed with flavor. Whether ordering in or ordering to go, keep in mind it takes quite a while--almost 10 to 15 mins--for the staff to make your sandwich, so I wouldn't recommend that you stop here in you're in a hurry because you're not going to get it out fast. In this case, call ahead about 30 mins or so if you're picking up. The prices are a little high, but it's worth the price for the quality of the food you're getting, which I can't say for most restaurants in the present era (2020s for those that are reading this in the 2030s and 2040s, if this platform still exists then lol!) Either way, the quality is HIGH and the flavor factor? HIGH! The Classic Piadina is very fresh tasting and comes with greens. It only comes in one size, so it's a little small for me. Still delicious! The Nonni is a pretty large sandwich, if you're getting the full sandwich. The onions combine with the meat enhances the flavors. The building that Originale is in presents itself as a very quaint and relaxed lunch spot with bright colors and large windows. It's a place you can go to sit and talk with friends. I popped into Originale for a weekday lunch without ordering ahead and ended up with a bit of a wait as it was fairly busy--but let me tell you, that sandwich was absolutely worth every minute. I went with the "Favorito," and let's just say, it instantly earned its name. The prosciutto cotto was pure-savory-bliss-melt-in-your-mouth good. And the focaccia- fresh, herby, and perfectly balanced in thickness. It hugged the fillings just right without stealing the show. Also, the tomatoes- I did not expect them to be so buttery and delicious. I may have paused mid-bite to appreciate them. Yes, I'm that person. I love Originale. This was my favorite sandwich shop downtown. I had not been since the new owners took over and decided to give it a shot while in town. I had high hopes knowing they were passed down the original recipes. I knew it wouldn't be exact but what I received was disappointing. I was finally able to check out this popular Italian deli. Inside there are lots of items for sale. A few triple d memorabilia spots from their visit. We were there during lunch and luckily we were able to order and sit down right away. The woman working the counter, seemed to appreciate my enthusiasm for having my order in picture form. My lunch mate wasn't hungry, therefore she ordered tiramisu. It was some of the best I've ever had. I ordered a caprese panini with mortadella and tomato soup half size, perfection! I ordered a single lemon ricotta crepe that was absolutely divine, and a full size panini (forgetting the exact one) also with tomato sauce, to go. Lastly, can't forget the Italian lemon and orange sodas that were the perfect compliment. In the end, we took more to go, than we were able to sit and eat, at which point my lunch mate got up to ask for a to go box. At first the woman working the counter said no and directed us to use their provided foil. It wasn't until she realized I was also taking my crepe home, that she then decided to give us a to go box. I had been wanting to try Originale for quite some time and finally was able to! The bread was so soft and fresh. The sandwich was good overall. I enjoyed the Caprese Sandwich. Originale leans heavily into "authentic Italian," and the interior decor, menu and accompaniments, and warm hospitality reflect these values. We shared a Pinsa La Margheritta ($17), add salami ($2). Marvelous fresh flavors of mozzarella, basil, tomato, and deli sliced salami. Paired with a Blood orange Sicilian Limonata and an ice cold Peroni, this just hit the spot perfectly. We had been looking forward to visiting this place since we had seen it on DDD. The food sounded great. Just our type of environment. We stopped in a little after 11 AM and the place was empty. But by 1130, it had started to fill up. We ordered the La Puttanesca pizza. The counter person asked if we like spicy food. We both answered yes. The counter person was true to her word. One thing I miss about Chicago is the abundance of authentic Italian delis & eateries. It's the biggest thing I get homesick over as I grew up in a Italian immigrant household & Italian food is comfort. Originale sells sandwich's, soups, deli meats & cheeses, desserts and pinse (Roman style pizza). It took my a while to check out Originale because they have hours that don't really work with my schedule as I'm rarely downtown in the afternoons. Though they do also have special evening hours (5-7:30pm) on Friday & Saturday nights for their pinsa. Well, they were running a sandwich special in September that I just had to get my hands on so I made it a point to go there for lunch one afternoon, and now I'm hooked! I've purchased both the September and October panpinsa (they use the pinsa dough to make the sandwiches) and they are just so delicious and well constructed. Fresh ingredients, house made pesto and jams. You get a choice of side between chips, soup and potato salad. Their potato salad is delicious, and their soups change regularly (they also sound good though I've yet to try them). With the thought they've put into their monthly specials I can only assume the standard menu is just as delicious. The other thing I just had to try were the pinsa! I typically prefer Neapolitan style pizza, but since we don't have a true Neapolitan pizza place in Anchorage Roman style pizza will have to suffice. This Roman street food seems like it would be heavy, but the pizza crust is light & airy. Originale sells take & bake at home options during their business hours, but on the weekends they also host "Pinsa Nights" where you can get these delicious pizzas cooked in house to order. I've cooked mine at home on my Traeger grill, and they were very good. Getting them made in house though with a perfectly crispy crust is a great experience as well. Most notable thing about this deli is that they were recently visited by famous restauranteur, Guy Fieri. Hopefully they will make it onto an episode of Diners, Drive ins & dives. I ordered one of their panini and the meat and cheese were great! It was a take-out and the bread was already soggy after 5min walk to my hotel unfortunately. So I definitely recommend eating on the spot. All the sandwiches also comes with soup or chips. I agree with some saying the service definitely could be better. I want to switch things up and post a positive review, and Originale is just the place for it. I had heard of it before, but didn't try it until my husband suggested it. I ordered online and walked to pick it up on my lunch break, as it is in a pretty convenient spot downtown, right between the courthouses and the 5th Ave mall. I ordered the Il Diavolo sandwich, and a Sicilian lemonade. The whole thing was a little pricy, but I chalk that up to the fact that a majority of the ingredients are made in house. Picking up was quick and easy and the woman behind the counter was very sweet. When I tell you this is the best sandwich I've ever had, I'm not exaggerating. Every aspect was on point, from the bread to the dressing to the cuts of meat. They clearly know what they're doing here. We placed an online order and picked it up via their curb-side pick-up parking spot. It was super fast and easy! Everything we ordered was delicious. Our take-out was mostly packed in paper boxes, except the salad and cannoli which were in plastic clam shells, and plastic forks for the potato salad. (I appreciate they seem to try to use paper/compostable where they can). The selection of Italian meats and cheeses to choose from was truly outstanding, we settled on the New York sandwich (pastrami and Mozzarella) and the Muffuletta (Salami, Spicy Coppa, Rosemary Ham, Mortadella, Provolone, Mozzarella, Muffuletta Spread). The cube of cheese on top of the sandwich is such a nice touch. We also got a caprese salad and a cannoli. This was my second visit. First time I got take out. While the food was great all around, the cashier/host was curt and seemed argumentative when I ordered. I observed this behavior with several people but they were pleasant with what appeared to be regulars. Very unwelcoming and messed up the vibe of our fun lunch outing. This delicious place is located in the old Brown Bag building on D St. In the giant coffee land of AK, this was the best macchiato i've had. This place is legit Italian paninis! I had come here once before severa years ago. I just remember it being a little too spendy for regular visits. Today I came on a Saturday for lunch and there were a couple people sitting down and several people in line ordering. While I was waiting there was still a steady stream of people! I got the New York City panini which had pastrami and fresh mozzarella and a basil spread. I like that you can order half or full sandwiches for most. I ordered a half for $9 and it came with a potato salad, chips or soup. The basil spread was delicious had a lot of flavor to it. The bread was focaccia, it was thin and crispy. I would have liked more than one piece of mozzarella on each half. Even though I got a half they cut that in half so I had two pieces and was plenty of food for me. The bread had Italian herbs on top. I forgot to take a picture tho! I only had to wait 5-10 minutes and they were diligently slicing meat and making everything in the back behind the counter while one person cleaned tables and another took the orders. They also have a cheese meat cold counter and they have some Italian candies and other goodies to buy. You can also get pizzas to go that are frozen and trays of meats and cheese. read more

Dropped in for lunch w my boss earlier this week and had a delicious, filling meal! I heard the paninis were to die for so I got the zip Diavoletti - which is with pepperoni, salami, cheese and peppers. I liked the warm crispy bread and the meat was fresh, flavorful and amazing... although so potent I didn't get as much cheesy flavor as I would have liked. Even though it was only a half sandwich it was extremely filling - I actually only ate half of the half and took the rest home. Good thing because although the Sandwiches come w a "side" of soup... honestly I'd say that little cup is more of a sip than a side. The ambiance is super cute - lots of seating and very clean.
