    Chicken Oregano
    Wendy C.

This was the first time I've ever been here, I'm mad at myself actually because prior to going, i already knew that i wanted moussaka, cos i love it, and then when confronted with the menu, i order Chicken Parmesan, then mentally kick myself, as i had vowed to get the moussaka. We were greeted warmly, and it seemed empty when we got there (early, around 5) but i cannot be allowed to reach the Hangry stage, because things get ugly. We were taken to a booth, and our server brought waters. Actually pretty small glasses of water, and in fact these are the smallest glasses of water i've seen in a restaurant. As this was my choice of beverage, i was limiting myself, because no carafe or pitcher of water for refills was brought to the table. Nor did the server refill the glass. I don't like that. We ordered - Chicken Parmesan for me, and Chicken Oregano for him. Like i say, i was kicking myself that i forgot about the moussaka. Sometimes, i love that restaurants are quite fusion with their food choices, and other times, i think it can muddle the flavours. We both opted for the soup that was an option, a chicken, lemon and rice Mediterranean soup. A cup of soup was brought out, spoons, and a basket of delicious looking herbed garlic bread. As we'd arrived early, there was no silverware or napkins on the tables yet, so i had to request napkins. I've mentioned before that i really hate cold, or lukewarm food, well this soup was boiling hot, too hot to eat without blowing on it, so we dipped the delicious herby garlic bread, and then ate it whilst blowing on the spoon. It tasted really good and creamy, i liked it a lot, and i prefer too hot than too cold. For our entree, we both believed the marinara sauce tasted of clove, which is not something I'd have expected. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm mixing clove up with something else. Possibly fresh basil? Anyway, the spaghetti on my dish was perfectly Al dente, the chicken Parmesan lovely and cheesy, however the chicken was a tad on the drier side. Not massively so, it wasn't inedible, but i didn't eat it all. His potatoes were like an English "chip" (what Americans call french fries) and i had some of those, i felt they were a little wet, as they'd been sitting in the marinara sauce, but still, it didn't stop me eating them. Neither of us finished our meal, nor did we take home leftovers, of which there were plenty. Maybe i just had higher expectations, as this has 4 and a half stars, and i did see loyal customers coming in and being treated very warmly, almost like family, and asking for their usual table. I'd definitely come again though, as I've really got to try the moussaka.

This was our first time eating at Pizza Olympia and we've found a new family favorite. The seafood fettuccine was delicious and the clams were hearty. The pizza, as my son put it, was the best he's had since we moved here.

Lovely food lovely family, been coming here for years and can never get enough. Service is like being treated like family and it's just so peaceful. Truly a wonderful gem of anchorage alaska.

    Moussaka with garlic bread!

I came here for my lunch break the other day since it has been two years from my last visit and was craving some Greek food. Pizza Olympia is a longtime Spenard institution that is located between Northern Lights and Benson across from the former REI location and next door to the Buckaroo Club. When I arrived, I was warmly greeted by one of the owners who quickly seated me at a booth. After going through the menu for a couple of minutes, I decided to settle on the Moussaka (fried eggplant, potatoes, seasoned ground beef, zucchini topped with Besamel sauce and plenty of melted cheese). This has been a customer favorite for many years and I still remember the family owners advertising this dish from their old commercials back in the 1980's. I was given a basket of complimentary garlic bread to munch on while waiting. The wait was a little longer than I would have liked especially with the limited time I had on my break. My order arrived about 20 minutes before my lunch break was scheduled to end. I made the best out of the situation and tried to finish it as best I could. The Moussaka was delicious with plenty of melted cheese and ground beef to complement the eggplant and the zucchini blended with the Besamel sauce. What happened next was the reason I decided to go with four stars for this updated review, the owner noticed how long I was waiting and she surprised me with a free loaf of seasoned Greek bread. She explained her husband made these loaves every year during the holidays. This was such a nice gesture on her part and one that would ensure me to come back here for a dinner with family and friends in the near future. This kind of warmth and sincerity from the owners is why Pizza Olympia has been going strong for such a long time as many businesses have come and gone through the years in the surrounding area.

In the future I think I'd come for an appetizer and a couple of drinks and that's it. I felt the veal was tough on both ordered plates and potentially I would have preferred chicken. That being said the sauce was great. The grappa sauce had amazing flavor and the Marsala sauce also had great flavor. Plus the funghi appetizer was great with the bread. It was clear that the staff was prioritizing white customers over us, which made us feel extremely unwelcome and disrespected. As Polynesian people, we felt discriminated against. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who values fair treatment and respect." - my sister's review. this happened to us today and this is not the first, second, OR third time this has happened! i started going to guido's in 2021 because a friend took me there. i have loved their food since so i brought in family, friends, etc. we would usually come in a big group or as a family. like every big group, we laugh, we are loud, it is a loud place in general. although loud, we are always respectful and tip well! we've rented guido's for my mom's 65th birthday party a year ago and the price they told us up front ($300) was different than what we ended up paying for. we brought our own food in, set up, cleaned everything after top to bottom, and they ended up charging us over $1k over "soft drinks". when we tried to address this with the owner, he did not return any of our calls. when we went in person to really just talk and itemize the bill, his employees would say he's not there, but we would see him walking around in the back. time after time, even with the terrible service, we would return in hopes to give them another chance. time after time, we get ignored or given passive aggressive service! they would whisper things to each other and just passes us by. we do not see this same treatment towards any white customers who are present at the time we are. also, there has been only ONE waitress who has always been kind to us and continues to be: a BLACK WOMAN. shout out to her! it's unfortunate that it has come to this because 1) i loved their food, 2) i do not like to put any businesses on blast EVER. i am understanding and want to see businesses thrive, especially longtime businesses. however, this continues to happen and this needs to be SAID.

Both are packed with flavor. Whether ordering in or ordering to go, keep in mind it takes quite a while--almost 10 to 15 mins--for the staff to make your sandwich, so I wouldn't recommend that you stop here in you're in a hurry because you're not going to get it out fast. In this case, call ahead about 30 mins or so if you're picking up. The prices are a little high, but it's worth the price for the quality of the food you're getting, which I can't say for most restaurants in the present era (2020s for those that are reading this in the 2030s and 2040s, if this platform still exists then lol!) Either way, the quality is HIGH and the flavor factor? HIGH! The Classic Piadina is very fresh tasting and comes with greens. It only comes in one size, so it's a little small for me. Still delicious! The Nonni is a pretty large sandwich, if you're getting the full sandwich. The onions combine with the meat enhances the flavors. The building that Originale is in presents itself as a very quaint and relaxed lunch spot with bright colors and large windows. It's a place you can go to sit and talk with friends. And the focaccia- fresh, herby, and perfectly balanced in thickness. It hugged the fillings just right without stealing the show. Also, the tomatoes- I did not expect them to be so buttery and delicious. I may have paused mid-bite to appreciate them. Yes, I'm that person. We eventually got seated, but even with the restaurant being pretty empty it still took a while before a server showed up to the table. Our server wasn't rude or anything, but the energy was just completely flat. It felt like he could not care less about being there. Sodas got refilled once the entire night. Between being seated and appetizers, and again between appetizers and our entrees, he was basically nowhere to be found. The thing that really got me was being asked if we wanted boxes while our plates were still full and we were just sitting there having a conversation, never once offering to top off our drinks until we finally asked. It's a shame because the food really was solid and the restaurant itself has a nice warm vibe to it. ORSO clearly has a lot going for it and on a different night with more attentive service it could easily be a 4 or 5 star experience. For now it's hard to rate it higher than a 3 when the service makes what should be a really nice dinner feel like an afterthought.

Our server was patient, and very pleasant, bearing in mind that one of our party was a crotchety old man. Prior to ordering, he and i arrived first, and were perusing the menu, and he was relating the items he liked, and what he planned to order. He told me he liked both Shrimp Scampi and Shrimp Sinatra. Our other 2 attendees arrived and we ordered - i got Italian Chicken, which came with Soup or Salad, and Garlic Bread. Crotchety Old Man ordered Shrimp Scampi, I'll leave out the other 2 in the party, because I'm the reviewer, and i can only give feedback on what i ate, and my experience. I got the lemon chicken soup, i did like that, it was quite a thick soup, and the citrus flavour was noticeable, but not overpowering. I did get some chunks of chicken in the soup The entrees came out relatively quickly, and IMMEDIATELY there's an issue. Crotchety Old Man announces that he ordered Shrimp Sinatra, and he does not want "that" and he was actually quite rude about it (Hence the name I've given him) the 3 of us and the server told him he had ordered Shrimp Scampi, and he was getting ruder, "Take it away, i don't care what you do with it" and the highly patient server, said she'd have a Shrimp Sinatra made for him. Honestly, I'd have walked off, hence why I'm not a server I did not wait for his entree to be served, as it was WAY past my personal dinnertime, and I'd already been hangry when i got there. Ok, so there was a huge amount of food. Mine was served on fettucine noodles, in a white wine and lemon sauce, with what appeared to be 2 chicken breasts, butterflied. Some parts of the chicken were very tender and juicy, others seemed to be quite tough. The noodles were ok, the sauce was not that creamy, and somewhat lacking. Just ok. The garlic bread - i am not a fan. I like my garlic bread to be made from scratch with real butter, and real garlic, and in my opinion this was not that. I make good garlic bread at home. And it like it made with a french baguette, aka small round slices, with liberal tiny pieces of freshly diced garlic. I rarely use garlic powder or onion powder at home. I prefer real garlic, real onion. I will say that quality beats quantity every time. Serving me a huge pile of food won't impress me. I will not take this home in a box. It's just not worth the calories. Just give me 1 butterflied chicken breast, juicy, tender, well seasoned, over an adequate portion of beautifully cooked noodles, in a perfectly creamy white wine sauce, topped with browned, finely grated Parmigiano Reggiano and my eyes will roll in my head with delight.
