I've always thought they had a ridiculous return policy - sale item can't even be exchanged even if it's the wrong size! But, nevertheless, I kept going. That is until an incident a few days ago which was the straw that broke the camel's back and made me not want to return ever again. I bought my 10 year old son a pair of nice running sneakers there. Can't remember the brand but with their prices, you think they'd be top quality. 1 month later a big hole appeared at the top by the toe. Now my son wears through shoes pretty quickly as do most 10 year old boys, but after 1 month? The other sneaker was starting to wear a hole by the small toe. I brought it in (unfortunately waited another month before I was able to get there, but still, 2 months after purchase) and said that I'd like my money back. The salesperson said she'd have to ask the manager who wasn't there. I came back and they apparently needed to go to the "top" manager up the hill (clothing store). I waited and she came. It was like she planned a whole line of attack. Told me it's a "fact" that something happened to these sneakers and they weren't defective. She was talking like she was a detective who knew how to do an autopsy on shoes. I told her how my son didn't do anything to them - what was she thinking he did? He liked the friggin' shoes and wanted to keep them. She refused to refund a penny until I told her what a good customer I've been for many years and how this was poor customer service. She "gave in" and said she'd give me half back which she described as 'more than fair'. More than fair in what world lady? So, McCaulou's is good if your purchases work out, but lord help you if you need to return something!! BOYCOTT MCCAULOUS!!

But I've also brought in pre-owned shoes for Peter and his team to restore (my favorite example are a pair of vintage Ferragamo Vara pumps that needed new heels and a desperate restoration of the white grossgrain bow. I've also brought in shoes that I got on The Real Real that were a steal due to damage. Peter and his team added new heels to my Balenciaga mules and removed nail polish from a pair of Prada kitten toe heels (I have no idea how the original owner managed to do this) Anyway, this review is about a Gucci vintage handbag that was lovingly brought back from the brink of landfill. I didn't know that they had a regular business of reconstruction of handbags. I stumbled upon this bespoke service after an unfortunate mishap with my new Mansur Gavriel leather tote. Soon after acquiring the bag it met with deep severe scratches after I pushed it under the seat in front of me on a flight. I was crushed. So I brought it to Peter who didn't make any promises but nonetheless delivered a small miracle and filled in and rubbed out the scaring. The tote now looks new. Getting back to Gucci. The sad story here is that I originally bought the bag at an estate sale about 2010. It was already old at that time with faded leather, an indelible stain and a broken strap. While I used the bag occasionally I mostly kept it in its dust bag. Until one day last winter I took it out to sell it, only to discover the entire inside had mildewed! Fast forward to January when I was picking up my tote bag, and the staff couldn't locate it. So they took me back into the storage area and while looking for the tote, I spotted on Peter's work bench, the exact same Gucci bag, but completely deconstructed! The bag was being rebuilt almost from scratch. When I asked about it, that's when the staff informed me of this whole other service. And! They even showed me a finished product of a bag that was identical to my own. This chance encounter gave my mildewed bag a new chance at life. Was it expensive? Yes did it take a long time? Yes there were a few months long delay due to the backlog of work and availability of the suede material used to rebuild the interior. Was it worth the wait? Yes I have been a believer of buying fewer but better, preventive maintenance, and buying second hand. In a world where shopping online has replaced brick and mortar stores, it's heartening that there are still businesses out there that we can support like model shoe renew.

All returns are accepted within 30 days with a receipt. Would that have happened to someone of a "lighter hue"? I doubt it... Yes, I'm a Black woman.
