This is my new go to shoe store when I know what to get! The lady was helping me was nice and helpful. It is conveniently located.

I will never shop at McCaulous Shoes in Montclair again if the rudest employee I've ever encountered is still there. Mask below nose, death stare, measure his feet yourself lady, don't touch the shoes, creepy guy. I reported his behavior to management. They really didn't care. I guess they have scraped the very bottom of the barrel this time, so without this person, there would be no one. Maybe that would be better? read more

I've been going to McCaulou's clothing store and shoe store for many years. In a word, convenience. I've gotten some nice things there but they are mostly overpriced and pretty "snooty". I've always thought they had a ridiculous return policy - sale item can't even be exchanged even if it's the wrong size! But, nevertheless, I kept going. That is until an incident a few days ago which was the straw that broke the camel's back and made me not want to return ever again. I bought my 10 year old son a pair of nice running sneakers there. Can't remember the brand but with their prices, you think they'd be top quality. 1 month later a big hole appeared at the top by the toe. Now my son wears through shoes pretty quickly as do most 10 year old boys, but after 1 month? The other sneaker was starting to wear a hole by the small toe. I brought it in (unfortunately waited another month before I was able to get there, but still, 2 months after purchase) and said that I'd like my money back. The salesperson said she'd have to ask the manager who wasn't there. I came back and they apparently needed to go to the "top" manager up the hill (clothing store). I waited and she came. It was like she planned a whole line of attack. Told me it's a "fact" that something happened to these sneakers and they weren't defective. She was talking like she was a detective who knew how to do an autopsy on shoes. I told her how my son didn't do anything to them - what was she thinking he did? He liked the friggin' shoes and wanted to keep them. She refused to refund a penny until I told her what a good customer I've been for many years and how this was poor customer service. She "gave in" and said she'd give me half back which she described as 'more than fair'. More than fair in what world lady? So, McCaulou's is good if your purchases work out, but lord help you if you need to return something!! BOYCOTT MCCAULOUS!! read more

I've previously shopped here due to convenience but am over it. No sizes and horrible service. Why have so many shoes on display when you have no sizes in stock? A frustrating experience when shopping for children's shoes, especially after three attempts/visits. The service people seem to not know or are completely indifferent to the meaning of the word service. In addition to a general attitude of simply not caring about the customer, when they couldn't find my store credit (because they had misspelled my name) their service approach was to shrug their shoulders and tell me that it didn't exist. A silly store where the lack of professionalism zeroes out the convenience factor. It's off my list. And by the way, what kind of kids shoe store doesn't have or won't let a 3 year old use their bathroom? Referred me to the CVS. Luckily I remembered that the main McCaulous 1/2 block away had a bathroom in their kids department. read more

I've walked in here a couple times, and not once have I've been greeted. Every time I walk in there, the employees just look at me and continue on with chatting with one another. The sign says "SHOE SALE" outside, which kind of makes you think that they are selling discounted name brand shoes, but they're not. Prices are the same as you would see them in your favorite brand's website or whatever. They have a nice selection of shoes, but a bit too pricey for me I guess. read more

The selection of shoes is pretty nice, although I wish there was more variety. The prices are also pretty good for a boutique-type shop. I love that the Easy Spirit selection isn't so "old woman" looking either. read more

Good selection of kids shoes, better than the selection for adults. They had a good variety of brands for kids: Vans, New Balance, Sketchers, Merrill Stride Rite, Converse etc. I was glad to see at least 3 brands that come in wide - yay! They had some really cute 'infant' shoes (Vans, Converse). Prices were good - $5-$10 less than I've seen elsewhere for the same brand/shoe. There weren't very many salespeople working at the time I was there, but it was a Sunday. read more

I went to the new store on Mountain today that is next to the old store. I had my emotional support dog with me. I was told that dogs aren't allowed. After I explained that he is an ESA I was told that it was ok, but that people usually tie their dogs up outside. I'm sure. Even if he wasn't a certified ESA I still didnt want to support a store that doesn't allow dogs....in Montclair of all places.....where rents are sky high. They're going to turn away paying customers with dogs??? I guess so. read more

Poor, poor customer relations. My daughter and I saw a display of Hydro Flasks in the window. We went in to pick out a few. After picking out a few flasks, we were stopped immediately in our tracks by the cashier and were told to purchase the hydro flasks at the register next to the display. I let the cashier know that we wanted to look elsewhere in the store. Why the issue? He explained that the hydro flasks did not have sensors on them, so we had to pay at his register and couldn't walk with them around the store. At first I didn't think anything about it. I said okay. We purchased $121 in merchandise. We left. I came back within 5 minutes and returned ALL flasks. That transaction left a bad taste my my mouth. I felt like I should not have spent $121 in this store for POOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS. Is it customary to treat customers like a thief every time they walk in? I explained my situation to the cashier. He gave me a heartfelt apology and said this was not coming from him. It was coming from management. Every time someone steals from the store, he gets yelled at. The management makes him be a security guard AT THE DOOR and cashier. He didn't blame me for how I felt and kept apologizing. He was so embarrassed for enforcing the stupid store policy and kept apologizing. He took the flasks back without a problem. He was very nice. Your store needs a BETTER WAY to handle customers and furthermore, you should not have a timid, old, almost blind man being store security AND cashier. PICK A POSITION FOR HIM. I am guessing you're too cheap to hire security, so you use a timid old man to hold down the fort? He should not put his life on the line for your cheap merchandise. I just bought a house in the Bay Area and I'm not coming into your store to steal some damned water flasks! I'm ordering off Amazon.. they can have my business! Hope your store fails big time in the Bay Area. I will tell whomever I know to avoid your little funky store. YOU ARE NUTS AND PARANOID! How about you make friends and not enemies? read more

I was looking for some new shoes for fall and they had a really great selection for men. I bought some awesome Vans that I get compliments on all the time. They measured my foot and really took the time to help me. Great customer service, definitely will be going back to get my winter rain boots. Also, I get my Sperry's here every year. They always keep them in stock, plus the staff is helpful and I have branched out on my usual Sperry purchase which wouldn't have happened if the girl hadn't brought me out a different style to try on. read more

They have a good selection of children shoes, but horrible service. Barely do they bother go get you the pair you ask for, and then just hand you the box and go away. Unbelievable. Don't expect any kind of customer service or advice here. read more

Walked in on a Wednesday afternoon, wasn't greeted by staff. Three of their sale associates were behind the counter and when I approached them to ask for sizes, they looked super annoyed. Isn't is your job to cater to your customers and help? I'm sorry my presence annoyed you, but aren't customers supposed to keep you in business? I ended up buying a pair of boots and when paying she was rushing me out the door. I will not step back in here, unless something changes with their pretentious staff. read more

Surprised to see the reviews below. I had a great experience with this store. I was looking for a specific pair of shoes as a gift for my mom, and called around 3pm. The lady who answered not only confirmed she had the shoes, she offered to put them on hold for me. When I got to the store, I was looking around, and someone asked me if I needed help. It happened to be the same lady who I talked to on the phone. When she went to grab my shoes, she picked up an extra pair in a different size just in case. She was right, and I ended up with the larger size. I don't often give 5 stars; also, the store selection wasn't the best. But, I think the neighborhood caters to a different demographic than mine, so that might be why I didn't find the styles as appealing. But, good choices if you're looking for basics and decent quality shoes. read more

When I went into McCaulou's I saw a number of styles I liked and asked to try one on. One was a white canvas shoe, and the girl returned with a size I hadn't asked for. After some time she came back with the right size but it was a medium dark tan. I said I wanted it in white and she said it didn't come in white, that the one I saw had just faded to pure white. No way. Then I found another brand of white shoe and she brought back a model with blue trim. I again asked for the white shoe on display and was told the one with the blue line was the same. If this wasn't annoying enough as it was, although there were 2 salesgirls in the store, neither greeted me or was in any way pleasant or helpful. read more

I went in recently to find a new pair of boots and was helped by a lovely young woman Linea. She was helpful, friendly, and efficient. The only negative was the smaller selection in size. I'm a size 11 shoe and not every style was available. Still, the store was well kept and organized with excellent customer service. read more

I walked in on a Sunday afternoon looking to buy shoes for my two-year old. Nobody greeted us or acknowledged our presence. There was a man with his son being helped by a sales associate. I waited for a second sales associate to finish with his customer, so that I could ask some questions. Instead of coming over to help me, he then went to help the man who was already being helped by the first associate. I was willing to overlook these things because I really needed to get my daughter some new shoes that day, but when I finally got his attention and started talking to ask about available sizes and to ask to try some on....he actually walked away from me WHILE I WAS TALKING and started a conversation with a coworker. Then instead of coming back to me after the conversation was done, he WENT BACK to helping the man. I immediately left and went to GoldenBug Children's Shoes on College Ave and bought my two-year old a pair of $60 sneakers. I am appalled at the way I was treated and McCaoulou's has lost a customer for life. I live in the neighborhood, but after the way I was treated, I will never set foot in their store again. read more

I WILL NEVER SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS AGAIN... I came in to purchase a pair of white crochet Toms with my niece and immediately the young blonde girl approved me and gave me great service in helping get what I needed. I left very pleased... I went down the street for some lunch and came back to the shoe to pick up three more pairs for me and my niece. I noticed the blonde girl was with someone so I asked if when she was finished if she could help me again... She immediately just grab someone else, a shorter asain women wearing all black and glasses.. She didn't seem to want to help at all she was not friendly at all she just grabbed the shoe for my niece to try on and literally walked back to the register to stand there with a stupid look on her face like she didn't want to be there and never came back to check in on us... I was happy the first time to support the business and I loved that it right down the hill from my house. but now F that I'll just go to borderland or Macy's to by my Toms.... Bought shoes at McCaulous and wanted to return them the same day, and they refused to accept the return!!! Terrible customer service. Do yourself a favor, stay away and buy your shoes elsewhere. read more
