The location and the venue is nice - spacious, the outside seating is great for a low-key dinner. The food wasn't that great though, just average. The menu seems to be more interesting than normal "bar food" but the quality is still at about that level. The mussels appy is great, but the fish tacos were fried and low-quality (not enough fish!) and the pork special was not that tasty. Burgers etc are pretty good! I went to Orleans tonight with my wife for an early dinner. For the most part, our food was incredible. I ordered the fried chicken plate, which came covered in a smoked bacon gravy (read that again... yes, that is what I said... smoked. bacon. gravy.) with a side of mashed potatoes and some mixed veggies. The chicken was fantastic... perfectly seasoned. The mashed potatoes were some of the best I have ever had.... seriously. I have had perfect mashed potatoes a few times in my life and Orleans made that short list. The veggies were disappointing considering how good everything else tasted. My wife got the fish tacos. She enjoyed them as well. However, the guacamole that came on the side was pretty bad. It honestly tasted a bit old. Our server was a little bit inattentive... we sat at the table for 10 minutes before he came to take our drink orders and we never got refills on water. I wanted to like Orleans more, but the late night menu didn't seem capable of delivering many of the menu items that made Orleans so appeal. (foods commonly found in New Orleans would be nice). We got a couple of beers, which came from a decent selection as well as a pizza and wings to share. The pizza was a little too oily and greasy for my liking and the wings were crispy and tangy, but this wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I think the cut the late night menu a little short for operations sake, but when you call yourself Orleans, you have to put in the extra effort to rep the city! The service was decent and patient with some of our indecisiveness. The food and beer came pretty quickly. It seemed a little odd that they left the restaurant intact and felt like they could have been more creative with the space with some kind of event like live jazz, dance floor, or some other themed format. I have to say that this place always comes through for me. Pretty standard place with decent food and drinks. Nothing fancy or special, but really a good place that I've ended up at many times. A few times I've tried to go out to dinner with some friends/family nearby, most places were booked up or had a ridiculous wait time. I went here with a couple of friends and there were corona promoters here and we got free drinks from them which was super nice. I really liked the atmosphere here and they had the Red Sox game on so that was nice. I made a reservation through open table and I'm glad because we were seated right away. OK, here's how best to enjoy your Orleans experience: 1) Go on Sunday to watch football. Ask the bartender to add a little Tabasco to it. If that isn't your thing, try one of the local-ish brews on tap. 4) Order the steak tips. They are unbelieveably good (no one believes me -- until they try them). 5) Greet the other football watchers at the bar. 6) Enjoy. Orleans has surprised me by becoming my neighborhood bar. I went a few times on a few dates, and ordered entree-ish dishes, and wasn't bowled over. However, several friends and I went down one fateful Sunday, in search of a place that had the NFL ticket without being another annoying, crowded, loud, meat-head filled sports bar. I've been going to Orleans ever since. The staff is incredibly friendly, and many times (except maybe Friday and Saturday nights), you'll meet nice local folks at the bar. You can't go wrong with most items on the menu, though some things are better (seriously, those steak tips are freaking good) than others (chicken fingers). I appreicate the bar area for it's laid-back atmosphere, the late (and good) menu, and the very decent tap selection. I went to Orleans for Saturday brunch because they have outdoor seating and we had a dog. Despite the place being completely empty, save 4 tables, the service took FOREVER and once our server delivered out food, she wasn't to be seen again until almost the end of the meal. For brunch, I always order my standard eggs/sausage/homefries plate (that's the gold standard by which I judge all brunch places), and I know there's supposed to be some cajun flair or something because, hey, it's Orleans, but I didn't really like how the sausage tasted. I've been here on a few occasions, including grabbing a few drinks on a Friday night, which is very difficult as the place gets very crowded. This place is a nice escape a few blocks down from Davis Square and I quite frankly didn't know it existed until recently. It is slightly awkward standing at or near the bar when there are no seats since you're literally standing next to the dinner crowd, and waitresses are trying to get past you. So in that respect I wasn't very pleased. I did come here for brunch on a Sunday and it was very nice and quiet with only a few people. Good for an afternoon lunch. Food was overpriced but fine. Not amazing and not bad - just fine. We had the bacon cheeseburger and the cob salad, and they were both perfectly acceptable. Nothing was wrong with any of it. I think our server was new so I won't judge, but he did try to tell us that each bowl of soup is made from scratch with the meal - so I couldn't get my soup before my burger cause they had to make it. If this is true, they should advertise it because it's awesome. I have a feeling that it's already made and either is reheated or simply ladled out of the pot and he just didn't understand. I remember when this place was called the Aquarium, complete with huge fish tanks, and at night they'd bring in a DJ who'd play loud bass-thumping music. I always wondered how the fish felt about that. The Orleans dinner menu is pretty good, and I've never been unhappy with my meal. But the brunch is unremarkable and at times disappointing (the eggs in my benedict were overcooked and not even runny - what the?). It's decent for a drink after work. The bar menu's not bad, but if you're gonna drop $10 on a burger, go to Gargoyles on the other side of the Square. Why do I keep going to Orleans? Love going to Orleans when the weather gets nice and they open up the wall of windows. Problem is the sun beats down on those leather seats and you get 3rd degree burns. Well maybe only 2nd degree burns but still hot as hell. We went for brunch. I was uninspired by their menu selections but ordered the Bimini sandwich. Between the sun, the warm air and my lack of a good nights sleep from my previous night's escapades I was not hungry after two bites. My girlfriend works right in Davis, and I often have to pick her up, so we've been finding this a convenient spot to pick up a couple drinks or a quick bite after work. The staff seems nice, and they have at least a dozen draft beer choices. The appetizers and food is always good- we've tried the nachos, quesadillas, and a flatbread pizza with duck on it which was pretty savory. We've noticed a few advertised specials as well, including $1 oysters and $5 burgers, but the timing is limited and we haven't had the chance to take advantage. There is ample street parking (metered), as well as a public lot (also metered) across the street. My sister took me out for my birthday and, since she lives down the street, we opted on Davis Square for the night out. There are so many choices down there but, as recommended by her boyfriend, we chose Orleans, and I'm happy we did. The atmosphere was excellent. There was a host there immediately when we walked in so we weren't scratching our heads wondering where to go. It had large TVs everywhere (so I didn't miss a moment of the Patriots-Ravens preseason game) but thankfully lacked the boisterousness of a sports bar. THEY HAVE SAM ADAMS CHERRY WHEAT ON TAP! Yes, that deserves ALL CAPS. The bread we were served was so soft and moist, it was like a biscuit and it was served with hummus for dipping. Excellent. The menu had a great selection but wasn't as long as Homer's "Illiad" *cough* Cheesecake Factory *cough* I chose the Gnocchi and it was perfect. Sometimes, gnocchi is mushy, but Orleans got it right. (Surprising for a non-Italian restaurant). For dessert, I was served the chocolate lava cake with a birthday candle in it. Aww. It was delicious. And hot. Perfect. Most importantly, our server was excellent. I only wish I got her name. As I've mentioned a million times before, I waited tables forever which makes me very anal about service. We went with another couple to Orleans Restaurant in Davis Sq for News Year Eve. We really enjoy the staff and the food, and the menu for the evening sealed it for us. We used to go to another restaurant in Cambridge but one point the food changed and we lost interest going there. We have found that you can always order a drink at any bar, but the food is what keeps the customers coming. After having the food at Orleans we really said, "This is great". Example of the New Year's Eve menu that we had... First Course: The Baby Mixed Greens:: For a mixed green, it had a lot of details from the toasted walnuts added right before the dish was sent out, the goat cheese at a perfect temperature to melt in your mouth and the right amount of dressing that didn't make the greens soggy. The Shrimp Boulette: Our friends stated they really enjoyed this appetizer. Second Course: Braised Beef Shortribs: This was what New England calls comfort food. The ribs were cooked perfectly where the meat just peeled off the bone. The gravy was a great compliment to the ribs. The gnocchi and wilted spinach was the perfect side dish. Pan Seared Statler Chicken: Loved the lemon thyme au jus sauce with the rice. It did come with mashed potatoes, but I am not fan, so without any issue - I was able to substitute. The baby carrots were cooked perfectly with a nice crisp to them. Potato Encrusted Salmon: Our friend said the Salmon was excellent with lots of flavor and most importantly, she felt it was cooked perfectly. Even with the potato crust it was light and not oily at all. Third Course: All of the desserts were PHENOMENAL!! Two of the desserts really stood out - The Nutella Pizza with the light drizzle of the raspberry sauce and chocolate chips were heaven. The Lemon Meringue had a slight twist but was a complete favorite. The quality of taste and presentation of the food was stellar, the fun atmosphere, and attention from the staff are top notch. This is why we come back and brought good friends with us. Also, on top of it all it's a great place to watch sports, talk sports with the other regulars (and they know their sports), and their Sunday brunch. I've had food that was so horrible that I've had to send it back (super dry pulled pork that looked disgusting during their "taco night" special - - it clearly had been sitting under a heat lamp all night, drying out and looked gross), but on the other hand I've had some tasty food there (the steak tips were delicious and the mashed potatoes and green beans that came with them rocked). Is it a bar? Is it a restaurant? Does it matter? Orleans is something of a hybrid. They have a nice bar with high-top seating in the front of the restaurant and a classier restaurant style area in the back. But the low divider between the two means that folks eating have a view into the bar and vice-versa. At some places, I find it a little off-putting, but at Orleans, I think it works. On a random Friday night, I wandered in here with friends and really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a good group of people, but still not too difficult to get drinks at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, something that's far lacking at some other establishments I've been to. The bartender got an order for seven shots for a group, saw me waiting and asked me what I wanted (two beers). Understanding how long the shots would take, she served me quickly before mixing and pouring for the large group. Definitely a positive. The deck at Orleans is also quite nice on warm summer nights. There aren't many places in Davis Square where you can have a beer and look up at the night sky. It's hard for me to even think of another one off the top of my head, other than Sabur which really isn't in the Square. Regardless, it's a nice change from the normal dinner/bar establishment, and I definitely believe it's worth a try. read more

It is great for dates, puts out the best mussels I've ever had, and makes a better citrus mojito than anywhere else you'll find in the area. The only reason that I hesitate to give it the next-to-impossible-to-achieve five stars involves its prices. No, it isn't over the top expensive; with that said, though, all of its appetizers can come down in price about $2-$3, and its entrees are about $5 more than you'll want to pay. Yes, you do get your money's worth and the entrees are plentiful and delicious, but these prices rival those you'll find on Newbury Street; Davis Square should stick with Davis Square prices, no? This restaurant was great. I absolutely loved it. I went there for some brunch and everything about it just made you feel so comfortable. I had a reservation, & arrived late but they had no problem accommodating me. Both the host and the waiter were extremely friendly. As soon as we sat down we got two glasses of water and the waiter gave us plenty of time to look at the menu. She was also great with answering any questions we had, and gave great suggestions. They were also very inexpensive, I spent about $30 for two people which in my opinion is great for the quality of food we received. I ordered the French Toast, and it was delicious. A Davis Square staple. I love this place. I've been going for the last 6 years, first at lunch or happy hour from my office then as an easy stop on my way home when I moved a few streets away. It's got a great local vibe and sense of community. Of course, for the moment, they are only open for take out and delivery given the pandemic. But usually there is something going on every night. My weekly favorites are trivia Wednesday, karaoke on Friday, brunch & football on all TVs on Sunday. They have a patio open whenever it's warm enough along the side of the building and the front windows fully open in the summer (sometimes I just step in that way vs walking around to the door and it's currently the takeout window open right to the side walk). The truffle fries and chicken tenders are my favorites, the bourbon molasses sauce is so good. But a lot of things here are! If your looking for a causal spot and some solid pub food, give Orleans a try. read more

They subsist by leeching off the popularity of other Davis restaurants. They're like a vampire restaurant who should be dead in any other town but survives based on their one redeeming quality. Anyway, we tried to come here with our dog and a couple friends after a walk and have dinner. Nice day, empty patio; classic. Exactly the story: we tried Boston Burger, no dice an hour wait. We tried Mike's and Five Horses, all full patios and long waits. Sigh. With five of us and a dog, Orleans was the only option. Gotta love it when your main quality is "process of elimination" right? Long story short, a hostess told us the patio is cool for dogs. We settle in, order our drinks and food, then the manager, a 40 something deadbeat with a mullet and a stick up some part of his body comes out and snaps at us that dogs aren't allowed. He barely stays to argue and just tells us the dog can't be on the patio. She's a perfect dog mind you, not that that matters. I get it. Health code or whatever (though I HIGHLY doubt that since other Somerville restaurant patios allow dogs). Meanwhile we already had our food order in, so we waited for it and had them box it up. I figured they'd at least do something for us given their mistake, but nope, full price. Ask to talk to bad manager again; he comes out, our neighboring patrons are arguing with him as well and are very supportive (thanks everyone) and he tries to blame us for ordering even though we knew dogs weren't allowed (nope, order was already cooking), and then he blamed the hostess for the mistake (nope, bad communication is your fault as manager), and then finally relented and cut half off. He said "we get this 20 times a week," ... really? How dumb do you have to be not to just put a sign up? Bad management, mediocre food, middling to bad experiences every time I've been (probably 5 times at least). Never again. Honest and fair review. Get some new management in this place and turn it into a high quality joint and it would be a cash cow for its location. As it stands, the management is failing miserably, and I pity them for the lost opportunity and feel bad for the good employees who have to deal with it. Avoid. read more

I don't drink, so I can't give any insight on the bar. I do eat my share of filet mignon so I can give insight on that. One of the specials last night was Surf and Turf, shrimp and the filet. The shrimp were rubber and had grill char bits on them that I had to pick off. The "filet mignon" was a strip steak with a big cluster of crunch fat on it, also it was less cooked than I had ordered. New rule to add to my life list. Never order steak in a restaurant lit by candlelight. I couldn't see my dish, so I was unaware it wasn't an actual filet until I cut into it and had to chew, and chew and chew. I should have sent it back, but was trying to be polite. $22 of politeness, the receipt listed it as Miscellanous Food. And that's exactly what it was. read more

I've been to the Orleans 3 or 4 times now, and find it to be one of the better places to go for dinner and/or drinks in Davis Square. I've had dinner each time I've gone. One time I had a steak special, which was a bit undercooked for my tastes, but not so much I sent it back. My girlfriend had the swordfish that night, and we both really enjoyed our meal. The second time I went I had the spicy burger which was pretty damn good. I also had the opportunity to sample they're beer selection on that occasion. They have some decent brews and keep 5 of they're taps rotating with something new all the time. They actually had a Harpoon Leviathan on one of them last time I went, which was a nice surprise. The atmosphere is a very cool, not too hip but not super low key. They've had live music there a couple of times, and neither time did I puke which is a good sign for the performer, since I usually dislike live bands. Take home message: if you live near Davis and dislike Joshua Tree, Burren, Sligo, and the other mediocre bars, there is hope. Give this a shot. read more

I recently met up with some friends for dinner at the Orleans just outside of Davis Square in Somerville. After promptly being seated, we started with a round of drinks. Although there was nothing wrong with the cocktails, they were nothing to write home about. The biggest upside was the abundance of booze in each drink. Our food was served rather quickly and was right on par with our order. Much like the drinks, the food was OK. The only downside was the calamari appetizer. Do yourself a favor and avoid it all together. It was well overcooked and the flavorless dipping sauce only added to the disappointment. I would suggest the veggi burger or the Cuban sandwich. Both were quite tasty. Our waitress was great and the service was acceptable. The overall value was "OK", as prices were not too high and portions were mediocre. Service at dinner was slow and our waitress was not at all interested in being there that night. The manager had to come over and re-fill our water because she never did. I give it four stars for hanging out for drinks late in the evening. Good drinks, good service, not too loud for talking. It is fun to be there on a nice summer evening with the front windows open. Because it is down the street, I'm sure we will be back - probably only to catch a drink at night and go elsewhere for dinner. read more
