Excellent, excellent care in a peaceful setting. You can smell the ocean from your room. Staff were present, attentive, and truly caring. There's a book I recommend for insight: Alcoholism and Addiction Cure. The book was written by the founders and lays the foundations of the program. You're treated like an adult--free to use your phone, stay in touch, and even order food if the meals don't suit you (though they're surprisingly decent). I left early due to insurance costs, but I regret doing so. This place is worth the investment in yourself. read more

Passages was started by a father son team that have no official medical treatment. Their advertising materials indicate that that they are there to help and with no stigmatization. The intake was handled by a very well meaning information, but despite comments that they could accommodate people with a wide range of concerns, it has become clear with our conversations with them that income and liability are their only concerns. Delay after delay was given to us as a need to "consult with the team" with no details about what might be the concerns or what we could do to assuage those concerns. I would highly recommend talking to a trained therapist or mental health professional before considering this facility as a legitimate way to get help. Based on our experience this feels like a place that will only take on clients that are high net worth and zero risk. read more

Buyer beware! 2 men, with absolutely no medical training ,nor credentials started this "rehab" with absolutely no expertise- only that Pax, the son, had an addiction problem, and daddy was able to capitalize on people's weaknesses. I was there for a month. All of the younger people were having sex in the swimming pool every night. The food was horrible. They kept moving me around from room to room because I was paying for a private room and they wanted to put a rooms in. read more

I was absolutely appalled when making the difficult call to possibly get into their program. The woman I spoke to was obviously driving and was so horribly rude! I have a pros and cons list going after researching exactly where is a good fit for me and I deleted this place immediately. I actually called my insurance broker and told him my experience (I have new insurance just for this purpose) and he said that "anyone that behaves like that over the phone, and is in admitting, doesn't want to deal with anyone at that time so I would cross it them right away!" Nevermind, they advertise that they take my insurance. I would take the snoring husband in the background at Cliffside over them because at least the nicest guy called me back the next day! This task of finding a place to go while already feeling terrible is daunting. I hope that lady feels great about herself considering she made me cry. I made a choice to go to Passages above anywhere else. I was going through a horrible time as a result of a situation and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Their approach to understanding the root of your issues, working on and through them, was beyond reproach. Amazing. I did not need discipline like the rest of rehabs for addictions or depression claimed who make me in "Recovery". I wanted to help the whole person of me and wonder why I was not able to process situations, uncomfortable topics and finally admit that I don't have to be PERFECT. Having cell phones, computers, dealing with family is what life is about. Best to be in a comfortable place for someone to learn how to handle it. Rehab is easy, it is dealing with the outside world and influences that can tear, derail or bring you to tears. I cannot say anything better about Passages Malibu. I have worn my blue bracelet for over a decade. I know what I learned about myself while staying there is beyond anything I can describe. I have had 2 friends go after I told them of my experience and they felt much more positive and powerful about themselves as a result, neither one needed to go to rehab again. I spent weeks and weeks, with many who have oldermoved on and taken charge of their life and are super happy as a result. My closest friend married another and they now have 3 children. When you get to the root issues of what isn't making you feel whole, then time to start learning how to treat your mind, body and soul. You have your alone time along with the so much therapy, groups sessions and other times to just have an "Adult Time Out." Hopefully you can come to a deeper understanding of yourself and with a new perspective. I have also been to other Rehabilitation programs that are 12 step based and I now have almost 1yr sober. Don't waste your time money or risk the life of your loved ones on this phony program! I called 8/8/18 to see if I can come back to finished the my treatment, Michael said no. He based his decision on getting my money already so who cares, right? and He says I don't participate - BS. My first week at your house - I have to deal with kelly and kelly-anne having amazing loud intercourse after 10 pm which woke me up and could not far back asleep. This happened twice. The second time I reported this to the CS. First week was not easy for me and this was an all new situation for me. My last four days there I had develop a rash that got worse from day 1 to day 4 covering my entire body. I have pictures so does yanni. The rash was itchy and burning. The doctor gave me the wrong cream and made it spread more. Noone follow up with me on my pain. The nurses were clueless and keep guessing like I was your test rat. The doctor did more damage giving me this steroid cream and made it spread. So I left early from the program to come back to denver to see my dermatologist who healed it in 24 hours with the correct cream. I asked the CS to see if I could see a dermatologist, and Miguel says he will work on it, NOTHING HAPPENED. Even the simplist thing about going to the Cure for my vitamin IV was a fiasco from your scheduler and messed up my entire day wasted instead of my time spent with athena and margarite I tried to go to all my individual sessions as best I could with all the itching and burning. Wow, I was hoping for so much. This was IT for me! I was going to lose my family. I was desperate for this. They gave me so many promises and when I got there I was disappointed. The first day in nursing I left. * My husband is an addiction physician* Not one of these doctors are board certified. Which means they won't compromise on your meds at all. Highly unqualified for the thousands of dollars I was spending out of pocket. When I came home from the East Coast I tried to call with my concerns, the BLOCKED my number! I called Passages a couple of years ago in the hopes of not only obtaining some information, allowing me to better assist my son but asked if they knew of anywhere else I may turn. I was hung up on. Calling again to see if they knew of any cheaper places, as I was desperate to contact everyone I could. She stated it wasn't the place for him and gave me no alternatives. Didn't want to help me in the least. Passages cares about the money and that is their mission. I hope others will take their money elsewhere where the people really do care. They couldn't spend two minutes to give me a name of a place to help my son and he has since passed. These people should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Road to recovery I've been an RN for 19 years and I was an IV heroin/meth user. For the past 10 years, I've been in and out of treatment centers all over Florida attempting to get clean. I've experienced all programs from PHP, IOP, OP, 30-day, and 60-day. Usually, I've attended twelve-step programs which consisted primarily of groups and one individual session per week. With that, I've completed all the steps suggested by my clinical team at each facility. At one point, I was 18 months clean. During this time I worked all twelve-steps, attended meetings daily, and actively called my sponsor. Although I followed my sponsor's advice, I felt very miserable inside; I harbored similar feelings as to when I was using. Last May, I was broke and had thoughts of ending my life. I tried yet another twelve-step program in Jacksonville, FL. Upon being discharged, I relapsed and was found pulseless by the police; they started CPR and administered Narcan. After this incident, I realized how essential it was to try a different method of treatment. I recall seeing Passages commercials on TV, however, I never thought much about it as I didn't think they accepted insurance and I wasn't in the financial shape anyway to pay out of pocket. Nonetheless, I called the Passages intake line and discovered that they accepted my insurance. I had a glimmer of hope as I felt this treatment center could be different. After the good news, I recall thinking about my family and how I can no longer force them to endure this emotional abuse; it's either Passages or I end my life. I later arrived at Passages, willing to do anything to save my life. Since this isn't my first rodeo in treatment, I assumed the weekly schedule on arrival. I figured I would be in groups all day and scheduled one weekly individual session with my primary therapist. However, during my intake, the staff at Passages explained that I would have approximately 5-7 individual sessions per week, versus the usual 5-7 individual sessions my entire stay. I was in shock! The emphasis on individual therapy is what sets Passages apart from other treatment centers. During my stay at Passages, my weekly schedule included individual sessions from clinicians with diverse backgrounds. I was able to meet with a psychotherapist, family therapist, hypnotherapist, EMDR specialist, chemical dependency counselor, and an aftercare coordinator. With the help of Passages, I was able to discover unconscious thoughts that were hindering my chances at ever being sober. Today, I am over 6 months sober. I went here in 2007, my first rehab. My parents saw the 84% success rate and paid 80000 out of pocket for me to get "cured." I can tell you this is not 12 step based and it shows in their aftercare plans. I was told to stay in Los Angeles and stay away from New York. I was even told by one of my therapists that when I dealt with my underlying issues I could drink normally. A month after I left, I was brought back to my knees by alcohol. Every single person I went with (we stayed in touch via an email group) were not sober by the 60 day mark. I thought I was going to be "cured" from what I later learned is an incurable disease. It's a great vacation with no alcohol... But other than that useless to get sober. Update: one of my best friends went to Passages for the second time about a year and a half ago. Her therapist told her to stay in Los Angeles and away from her home. She had no aftercare. Within a month of leaving, she married the first man she met, and overdosed and died on her wedding night. I did this because it allows people to check in for only their co-pay. The insurance company pays far less then what i would normally get if the client was to pay cash, but it helps people which is why i do it... My accountant tells me i loose money when i take people in with insurance, but my response to her is that it's worth it. You can see in big block letters at the top of my website that we accept insurance... I recently opened two programs... for people who don't have insurance and I'm currently working on opening another... The profit margin for these programs is almost non existent because my overhead is so high, but i do it to help, not to profit. Let's be honest, there are so many claims made by well known mental health treatment addiction recovery centers across the country promising extremely high success results. Almost all of residential treatment programs in the country are AA 12 Step based, their effectiveness relies entirely on the assumption that the AA 12 Step programs work for everyone. We heard a lot of good things about Passages so we decided to get treatment for our 20 year old son this past February. Everything was fine the first few days. He said he liked it there. The counselor he had was very good. She told us he may need a different level of care on the 3rd day. He only tested positive for weed and she thought he may have a mental disorder. On the 5th day they went on an outing to a local drugstore. Our son called us and said they left him there! He ended up walking the wrong way thinking he was going back to the treatment center. What followed was pure hell. He was a missing person for 36 hours. The police got involved with trying to find him. When we finally found him he was very distraught. We gave them $4,100.00 up front and they billed our insurance an additional $8,000 only for 5 days. I emailed the owner and asked if we could get any of the money back because it was such a horrible experience. He replied saying that our son completely destroyed the room! This is not true. We went in the room after he went missing to pick up his belongings, and the only thing we saw was writing on the desk. He said he would get back to me but he never did. Yesterday they tried to take out an additional $450 from my checking account. Sorry but you're not getting another dime from us. I wish they would have told us they couldn't treat him and we would have picked him up. This was the the worst experience we've ever been through in our lives. I'm happy to say our son is getting the help he needs and is doing much better. Please do your research before choosing this or any other treatment center. It seems they're only in it for the money. Just stopped by to see some of the people at Passages. The therapists, counslors, staff, and client supervisors are all really helpful and supportive to their alum. On my recent visit I saw that they are in the process of building a spectacular waterfall in the front of their facility. Once it is completed it looks like it will be a great place to sit back and relax or to meditate near. On my visit I also learned they have introduced a new component to their program called ocean therapy, where they take clients out on their yacht to enjoy the beautiful waters near Malibu. On top of an already comprehensive holistic recovery program that they have, I love how they continually make efforts to make their program and facilities better and better. read more

Never went there but called when my husband was going to be weaned off of opoids after a back surgery. The guy I spoke to basically was uninterested and cold. Told me to pretty much take care of it myself. We brought in plenty of money and had insurance. Unfortunately it seems their care depends on their mood. Good mood seems to mean good care. I was very impressed with Passages. The facilities are amazing, clean, and new - everything you need. I guess the Malibu location, ocean views, gym, infinity pools/spas, and tennis court help too. However, I am more impressed with Passages' view on drug abuse. They concentrate on helping the ENTIRE person - not only their drug abuse problem. I personally think this is a very important approach in helping. Mind Body Soul, right? They try to determine other life variables that may be causing you to be dependent on drugs. Also, for every person there they have a team of professionals working with them with hours of 1 on 1 sessions. The staff I met was very friendly and kind - everybody from the drivers to the cooks to the Directors. I went thru Passages Malibu in 2014. i've had great success since leaving the program. Unfortunately and sadly very dear family member began to suffer from the same illness I had. I immediately called Passages brought them into treatment once again the success of Passages shows in them and all the work they were able to complete our tasked to do here at Passages. passages has shown me over the years the amazing program owners and staff continue to be as amazing as they were the first time I met them. If you have a family member were yourself or in need of treatment I would highly recommend Passages Malibu. There's no games no bait and switch no hooks to get you to come to the place just honesty and integrity. I have yet to see anyone I know enter passages Malibu and do the work they need to do come out of here anything other than amazing. Regardless of any negative reviews I have seen here I cannot imagine that anyone came in here worked the program and honestly put an effort in to work the program not get anything but amazing results. I am now 12 months sober and I want to thank Passages for "changing my path". Passages is truly a wonderful opportunity for people to stop and hit the "reset" button on their life. In the 30 days that you spend there your complete focus is to understand the "core" reason that you are hurting inside. I was very fortunate to goto the Malibu location as I felt extremely pampered and was surrounded by other "quality" people. The staff at Passages sets it apart as everyone there is a genuinely caring person. Some people talk about the "treatment cost" at passages and I want to put this into perspective: 1. If you have good insurance (Aetna) you will likely only pay a nominal amount. 2. The amount of counseling (hours) you receive weekly is simply amazing 3. The facilities are 5 star. 4. The food is 5 star. 5. The location (malibu) is amazing 6. Most importantly if you follow the program you are cured... So really what is the "cost" of a top quality program like this? Honestly when my wife compared programs for me the first thing she looked for was - "which program is the best." Of course cost was in the mix but she knew that I would only goto a top quality program like this that treats you with respect. I am so very fortunate to have a family that loves me and a wife smart enough to order Pax's book. I read the book and it made sense. If you or one of your loved ones need a change the first thing I would do it pick up a copy of Pax's book. I did all sorts of drugs but cocaine was my drug of choice. I accepted the fact that I'd be doing drugs the rest of my life or die early from some drug related incident...until I met Chris & Pax. These two brave, strong men should be commended for breaking out of the disease concept! They have cured so many people and they have CURED me! They have given me my life back. Very clean facility, they keep you busy with many different therapists. I went last year twice hoping to be "cured" of my alcohol addiction- I love the non 12 step program- but I left after 12 days both times because it was more like a sober vacation, staff was rude-food was awful, and people were having sex and doing drugs- also, I relapsed both times I left. I had never been to inpatient treatment before and was admitted with a dual diagnosis situation. I had a fairly serious medical condition and as a result began heavily self medicating. I have heard about lots of others experiences going to "rehab" and while I don't want to dis any treatment modality, because if it works for you then great, but knowing my personality type I did not want to go anywhere AA/NA was the focus. Passages treated me as an individual and did not use a "cookie cutter" approach to its treatment paradigm. Also, I was very opposed to going anywhere which group therapy was part of the program. Passages was the closest to meeting those two criteria. My therapy consisted of approximately 80% one on one sessions and the balance were in small groups. In hindsight, some of my group sessions were of my favorites. In part the small groups gave my brain a chance to rest from intensive one on one therapy, but it afforded me an opportunity to get to know the other clients and what they were going through. This proved to be especially valuable when during off hours and interacting in the milieu I grew a bond with several of the other clients who I will consider friends for life. I am sure that every type of group living a treatment situation has drama and issues - just like life and treatment was no different. However, if there ever was an issue or concern they were heard immediately. I have to say that everyone from the housekeeping and ground staff to the therapists, administration and even the entire extended Prentiss family, Chris, Lynn, Pax and Joe were always warm, engaging and really took a personal interest in getting to know me. No one day at Passages was the same. After detoxing and getting in a routine, Passages made tremendous strides to assist me in re-engaging with reality for lack of a better word. I learned so much about myself I feel like I could write on for days about my experience. Having put myself through so much trauma by self medicating and feeling shell shocked when I arrived, I can say that gratitude is one of the words I would use in describing my experience at Passages. From a counseling perspective, I had a primary pscho-therapist, an addiction counselor, a family therapist, a hypnotherapist, a life coach, massage therapist, an acupuncturist, an adventure therapy counselor and an art therapy counselor. My day started around 8 am for breakfast and depending on the day would have counseling from 8 am until noon, or 9 am until noon, each session lasting one hour and then four more one hour sessions after lunch. That was Monday - Friday. One day I could have a heavy psychotherapy session from 10-11 am and then a session with my private trainer from 11-12 which may have been a workout at its onsite fitness center, or a power walk on the beach. Again, no one day was ever the same. Things like equine therapy and art therapy were enjoyable but always had a therapeutic component and it worked very well. There were many optional activities on the weekends as you "leveled up" through the program. As you progress through the program you also are allowed more freedom. At first when you get there, at least for me, I was pretty exhausted. But as time went on, I started doing the early morning beach walks, which are optional, and a small group would be driven a couple miles up the road to Zuma beach, and some days I would walk on the beach and other days I would sit and stare at the ocean and contemplate life and try to absorb the view. The whole approach at Passages is to help you transcend back to a place where being high or drunk is not your reality or where you reside, instead bring you back to residing where being substance free is your normal natural zone. I have so many great and magical memories of Passages as being a place which provided me with the environment and tools to heal myself and prepare myself for the rest of life's journey. Personally, 28 days to make the kind of changes necessary after a period of sustained and heavy self medicating is not enough. I was half-baked at the 30 day mark. Fortunately, Passages has another beachfront location where you can continue treatment for whats know as partial hospitalization and intensive out patient. It is a step down from being in a fully hospitalized setting. I opted to go there so ease my transition back into life. You have a new set of counselors after you transition from the Malibu location to the Santa Monica location. in the beginning, you have therapy everyday from 9 am - 4 pm and after a three day trial period you get to start interacting with the outside world again. The counselors in Santa Monica go way deeper with you because you are coming out of your acute phase and found that I really began getting "woke" while there. Malibu was necessary to get me to Santa Monica, and it was cool how the therapy again progressed and was tailored for my individual needs. read more
