After checking into the hotel, we stopped for dinner in the hotel restaurant. We were one of two parties there when we arrived, and we opted to sit at a table rather than the bar. Maybe mistake 1. We weren't sure if we were even supposed to be in the table after a while because no one greeted us or brought us menus for an uncomfortably long time. When she did arrive, our server was friendly... when she was around. She would disappear for really long chunks of time, to the point we weren't sure that she went on break. We ordered our drinks, but unfortunately before the bartender got a chance to make them, some friends of hers came in and sat down at the bar. She immediately started to help them, and then eventually, after they had chatted, caught up, discussed which cocktails they wanted, she made them and they had a chance to sip them for a bit did she decide to finally make ours - which we had ordered before they sat down. Our food came and it was wrong, but my friend didn't even bother to speak up about it because the server took so long to do anything that it didn't seem worth it. In fairness, the food and drinks were actually good. I had the Yellow Rose Martini (since we were in the Emily Morgan, after all), and it was very good, even better than I had expected. I also had the Caesar salad, which had a unique ancho Caesar dressing that was really good, as well as sun dried tomatoes on the salad. It was one of the better Caesars I've had in my time. My friend had a chicken BLT, which came on a really thick brioche roll instead of toast, but other than having the wrong side, she seemed to enjoy it. Staying at the Emily Morgan and while I don't typically eat at the hotel restaurants I decided to give this place a shot and I'm glad I did. Came to sit at the bar and glad I did. The service was very attentive from the beginning. Cesia was amazing the entire time. Very respectful and always checking to make sure you are good. And also has a great sense of humor. Ordered a chicken sandwich and Brussels sprouts as a appetizer. Also order a drink to relax a bit. Everything had tons of flavor and cooked to perfection. The place was nice and very relaxing. In San Antonio during the month of August, restaurants should have air conditioning. The dinning area was definitely hotter than 78° and was super swampy and humid. It took over an hour to get our food which was just subpar to mediocre bar food/appetizers. Over cooked super salty asparagus, tiny flavorless tacos. When we were done eating, no one ever brought the bill and we had to go into the bar area to ask for it. They said they were getting it ready for us, but still didn't bring the bill. So we had to go and request the bill again. This time they admitted their billing system was down and they were just waiting for it to come back on. FINALLY after two hours+ of being in Oro we just paid cash, but had to correct the bill because other customers' buffet orders were added to our bill at $22 each. So to do better, turn in the air conditioning in the summer, make better food, serve it in less than an hour, let customers know when you're having technical issues with the bill and don't add other customers orders to the bill. Also, when you fail at that many critical customer service items apologize and reduce the bill. read more

I had the opportunity to check out Oro inside the gorgeous and historic Emily Morgan hotel downtown across from the Alamo before the Coronavirus put everything on lockdown. It's a beautiful hotel with a lot of history ( rumor has it it's haunted) that's worth visiting on that merit alone. If you're dining at Oro (and aren't a guest) they do offer complimentary valet service FYI. As soon as my friend walked in we were greeted and taken to the person who does check in for the restaurant. I had to laugh because she immediately asked if we were "the" reservation. I quickly realized why when we walked in and noticed that despite its spacious layout we were literally the only diners there other than a few patrons at the bar. Our waitress was super attentive (I assume because we were only table) to the point that it made the meal unenjoyable. To sum it up for you, from the moment we sat down for our 7 pm reservation until the moment she brought us our check, we were there for 58 minutes...for three courses. It was the fastest service I've ever had at a restaurant and for once this isn't a positve. My friend and I both ordered their chicken tortilla soup to start. For entrees he went with a Grilled NY Strip topped with parsnips and served with green beans and mashed potatoes. I opted to go with a braised veal shank with a polenta cake and street corn. We both opted for their chocolate churros with dulce de lech ice cream for dessert. All of the food was good. Not amazing....but good. The soup was very flavorful...a bit fancier than I like my tortilla soup but not bad. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his steak (I tried a bite and it was super tasty, and those parsnips really added an extra something). My veal was a bit of a miss but the fried polenta cake was very tasty. The sauce used on the veal didn't compliment it very well and despite being braised, the meat was very tough and chewy. The churros....well, let's just say you can never go wrong with churros. :) Our waitress, in what I assume was her eagerness to serve us, brought our entrees out while trying to take the soup bowls away from us (which we weren't done with by the way). It was an extremely clunky affair and a plate was almost dropped on me. Then, while we were only HALF WAY through our entrees she dropped off our dessert...that had ice cream. It was utterly confusing. My friend ended up flagging her down to take the dessert away until we were done eating our main course. She apologized profusely (and the manager even came out to apologize as well) and when we were finally ready to move to the final course I'm happy to say the churros were still steamy hot and the ice cream just as cold as when she first tried to serve it to us 25 minutes prior. But again, before we were done with dessert she dropped of our check, without inquiring if there was anything else we would like. We had both ordered cocktails at the start of the meal and would have happily ordered more and hung out for a bit if we didn't feel so rushed to get in and get out of what was basically an empty restaurant. And that is how, at a sit-down restaurant, you can go through three courses in a record breaking 58 minutes. Late night and this was the only close restaurant opened so I ordered room service. Their BBQ shrimp lettuce wedge (listed in the appetizer section was more of a dinner. Nice done with lots of tortilla strips about 4 grill shrimps half a lettuce and plenty of Chipotle dressing. The side order of french fries was plentiful. It was something different from the traditional Ranch or Thousand Island. This appears to be leaning towards the high end restaurant so expect to pay. read more

Terrible service! Walked in thinking it was going to be a great place (part of the Emily Morgan hotel) to grab a few drinks and boy was I wrong. Waitress (Le Croy) was unfriendly, basically forced us to close out our tab after 1 drink each(bar didn't close until 12 and we arrived at 9:30. She had sign the receipt and when she came back to collect the signed receipts she rudely asked " now where are those receipts i asked you to sign". At $65 a person, there were no carving stations, hot food was cold, cold food was either semi frozen (crab and shrimp), or room temperature (smoked salmon, cheese, fruit). Desserts weee pre packaged cookies and macarons; no pies, cakes, or fancy pastries. Buffet set up was not well organized and it took a long time to even make it to the food. 100% the WORST place I've ever been to in my 25years in San Antonio Food was horrible, bland, tasteless and took 45min for a burger and a chicken breast plate. It took so long and didn't even have any flavor. Service was horrible, saw my server 3 times while being there for 3 hours at the end was rushing to get out because I had only paid for 3 hour parking. Server forgot my drink 2x and both times took more than 25 min to check up, couldn't eat comfortably since I didn't have anything to drink and when I finally got it need I remind you, food was horrible. Last Oct 29 I went online and filled up my reservations form for Oct 31 at 5:00 pm at the Oro Restaurant as we wanted to spend Our Halloween dinner in the Emily Morgan Hotel's Oro restaurant since the hotel itself is considered as one of the US most haunted hotels and I thought it was a good idea to have dinner at their restaurant. Since we did not receive any confirmation of the completed online reservations form, we called directly in the hotel by phone and was connected to the Oro Restaurant , someone answered and took our reservations as they told us they didn't receive the online reservations form . We made reservations at 5:00pm for Oct 31 and gave out all our details in there unfortunately I did not get the name of the gentleman who took our reservations but horror among horror we arrived at the Emily Morgan Hotel on October 31 at 4:55 pm and waited the restaurant to open at 5:00 pm . 10 minutes passed the restaurant still did not open then we talked to one of their security staff at the lobby and they told us that the Oro Restaurant opens at 6:00pm we were a bit disappointed and my husband didn't want to wait another 1 hour to just eat in there . I cannot believe how incompetent the people in this hotel are as well as in the restaurant . How could they be able to confirm a 5:00 pm reservations when they actually open at 6:00 pm . Oro Restaurant and the Emily Morgan staff you ghosted us on Halloween . Very disappointed as we drove 18 miles out just to dine in there . I requested a table close to the window and she accommodated me with no problem. I went specifically to try the Restaurant Week they were offering for lunch. This is where different restaurants put a fixed menu for lunch or dinner for $15/35 Tier 1 restaurants or $10/25 for Tier 2. Oro falls into Tier 1. Great deal for the type and amount of food you get. The starter I went with was the beef empanadas. They were so tasty and the dough was perfectly cooked with a chimichurri type sauce. My entree I went with was the Cuban sandwich with pork belly pickles and mustard. Excellent sandwich and the dessert Tres Leches was decadent not overly sweet. My guest went with the Alamo Chicken pasta, looked like Pesto pasta and the bread pudding with Nutella, she mentioned it was excellent. Our server was so nice and attentive, checking on us often. I would return to Oro and it's worth checking out while downtown since it's across from the Alamo. read more

This is definitely not the best choice of restaurants in this area, but it's not all that bad. That says more about the quality of restaurants around the hotel then how good this restraint is. I definitely think they are way overpriced, again considering what they are competing with, and that they are not really a five-star dining experience. I do think what we had was good, but at the end of the meal, we had spent a lot of money, and I did not get full, nor did I feel especially happy with what we had eaten. It's obvious that this is catering towards hotel clientele, andThey are priced to make their room service not seem so expensive. We stayed at Emily Morgan Hotel due to our supplier put us there for a Convention. I have no complaint about the hotel, I like how historic it is and I appreciate Landmarks and its history. The hotel is clean, the restroom is a little small and there is no exhaust fan. The view of the Alamo isn't bad either. We went down to the Oro Restaurant for breakfast due to it's convenience. I should have walk to Denny's instead. We ordered the Oro Breakfast, Breakfast Quesadilla for Hubby. My Oro Breakfast plate sausage was overcooked and dry, told the waitress about it and she gave me another one that is also dry and overdone, my breakfast potatoes was cold and overdone. The poached eggs was good and hot. Coffee was not fresh. Breakfast Quesadillas was plain weird. It had smoked pork inside a the quesadillas which was stringy and dry. We are both in agreement that Denny's would have satisfied us better. The only reason why I give them 2stars is because the server was friendly. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. read more

"The Don margarita is apparently... Award winning. Hahahahahahahah... No" - My extremely helpful tip while sitting at the bar sipping The Don. This review is confined to the bar. I do not like bartenders who have personal conversations with the only other patrons at the bar that are so loud, it's virtually all you can hear. I do not like bartenders who walk up to you and ask you what you want to drink without having greeted you, handed you a bar menu or told you any specials. I do not like bartenders who, when you say you want to read the menu first, then walk away for about 10 minutes before trying to take your order again - or who, during that 10 minute span as you're looking around awkwardly, turn to you and say "Be with you in just a minute" while they do nothing else but continue their conversation. And finally, I dislike bartenders who make really crappy 10 dollar margaritas. Needless to say, I found the service at Oro's bar annoying. I found the drink to be ever worse. If I hadn't seen her pour the tequila in the glass, I would have questioned if there was any in it at all since it was so loaded down with sour mix and orange juice. At that, there was so much orange juice in it it tasted like a tequila sunrise... and so little lime in it, it was left sweet. She also didn't know, apparently, to wet the rim of the glass in lime juice in order to make the salt stick... so I got less than half salt on my glass. If The Don margarita is award winning, according to their menu, then it requires a true mixologist to prepare it because I was firmly disappointed. We were not offered a food menu, so I can't tell you what the food was like, but between that and the lax, unprofessional service, I don't foresee myself bothering to sit at Oro's bar again... ever. This experience was the last link in a string of bad service in San Antonio that leads me to believe the city is light years behind when it comes to what proper restaurant and bar service should be. read more

For a lunch spot downtown? Hell yes, as good as it gets. I am a fan of the boozey lunch. Especially on Fridays. First of all, the Emily Morgan is a good-looking space, as well as Oro. With high banquette-style booths and cozy seating overlooking bustling Houston Street, you really feel like you're in the heart of the things. This city girl is pleased. Rumor has it, Oro will be undergoing a facelift, so I'm anxious to see what they do with the space. I have to dedicate an entire paragraph to the heaven-burger that is the Oro burger. I believe it's served on ciabatta bread (whatever it is, it's not your run of the mill bun), with all the basic components of a burger, but with locally grown fresh veggies and aged cheddar cheese. What I think makes it great is the thin and manageable patty. I like to enjoy all flavors of the burger in one comfortable bite, and you can here because it's not overwhelming in size. Lucky for me, I had a over-easy egg top mine off. Of course, this sent it over the edge. Oh, and if you like to get down with your bad self, take some of those perfectly crispy truffle fries to the egg yolk remaining on your plate. Trust me. I dabbled in a few other menu items during my visit, including the lump crab greek salad, antelope (off menu), and a limonncello & prickly pear sorbet to top it off. The orange fennel dressing on the salad was excellent - light, and the ideal citrusy compliment to the crab. The antelope was cooked to perfection - an extremely lean piece of meat but somehow still tender and melt-in-your-mouth status with some grilled strawberries to top it off. We stopped in to Oro for a quick dinner on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was not busy, although there was some action at the bar. We ordered our drinks just before happy hour, which ends at 7pm. The bread served before the meal was awesome, along with the perfectly spreadable and salty butter accompaniment. I had the Grilled Portobello Mushroom Sandwich and my husband had the Pearl Pasta. My sandwich was fantastic! The veggies on top were cooked perfectly and the portobello was meaty. Between the sandwich and the fries my meal could have easily been packed up and been my lunch for the next day. However, it was so darn good so between my indulgence and my husband stealing fries by the handful, the dish was totally finished! The pasta my husband ordered was one of his favorite vegetarian dishes thus far he exclaimed! Served with grilled zucchini, squash, peppers, tomatoes and roasted leeks in a vegetarian broth and topped with Cotija cheese, this dish is totally flavorful. Although, he did have plenty of the cheese moved over on his plate. The service was swift but warm and very friendly. A sort of "sampler" of several appetizers was all that I had in me to consume this time around. The ceviche, lump crab cake, and broccoli/guajillo soup were best described as mediocre. The soup, in honesty, probably stood out the most out of the three, though the flavors seemed to be hidden behind chili pepper oil. Overall -- this was a mediocre showing, but may be worth the trip if you are in the near vicinity. I wouldn't spend cab fare for it, however. ORO was delicious! It had a very nice ambience, yet relaxing. It was a Monday evening so it wasn't too packed, even though I don't think they have huge dinner crowds most of the time. My husband got the Caesar salad with flat iron steak and I got the Cobb salad with flat iron steak. Both were amazing and I would get either again in a heartbeat. We tried a variety of drinks and each were better than the next. And yes, we shared a dessert...banana split. We had one of the best meals in San Antonio here at the Oro and it was only appetizers and soup! First the Street Tacos. They come 4 to an order are made from shredded beef short ribs and are wonderful, but my favorite item was the Roasted Chicken Corn Chowder. Oh, my word! It is to die for. Absolutely the best corn chowder I've ever had. It was creamy, full of chicken and corn and did I mention it was creamy? I ordered a bowl to take home and got enough soup for two people. Heaven! For a place that appears to have its act together, my late lunch experience indicates otherwise. The restaurant was nearly deserted around 1:15 p.m. on a Tuesday. The menu looked promising in both flavor and price. It took a while to get a Diet Coke and even longer to actually get my food once I had ordered it. I had the chicken avocado sandwich. Well, that's what I ordered. The sandwich came open-faced, and the bun had obviously sat on the plate a while because the underside was downright soggy from collected steam. I decided to eat just the chicken breast, which was flavored well but overcooked and dry. Three bites in, I realized the chicken-and-avocado sandwich was missing the signature ingredient: avocado. I finished the chicken, ate a few of the "vegetable chips" -- really just gourmet potato chips from Terra -- and waited for the check. The server came by and was astonished when I pointed out the missing avocado. He apologized and when he returned with the check, he had deducted half the bill. It was still more than $8! For a $3 Diet Coke, he could have at least offered a refill. The meal was mediocre, and the attempt to make up for the mistakes was half-assed.
