Food was phenomenal, loved the live music. Our server, Hannah, was very attentive and very friendly. Definitely recommend.

The tavern was closed when I got there but I decided to stop and have a coffee at the coffee shop attached.

What a cool surprise this place was! I had gone and walked around the Alamo, and was needing a cup of coffee. Tavern and found out they were closed, however, the lady at the bar told me that the coffee shop was open on the other side, so I walked through the lobby and there it was. Super nice place in a historical building, ordered a sugar-free vanilla latte on ice, as it was about 98° outside. So a cool beverage sanded really good. The girl barista was super nice and friendly, and we chatted a little bit while she made my coffee. Went and sat down in the big oversized chairs that they had there and enjoyed the air conditioning and it cooled drink. This is a really great place and I would love to try the tavern next time I'm in town. The bottom line? If you are looking for a great place to grab a quick coffee, or go and have a stiff drink when they're open, Crockett's tavern would be the place to go. Highly recommend it, go check it out!

Located a block or so away from the Alamo, inside the Crockett Hotel, you can enter via the hotel entrance or directly into the restaurant through a patio entrance. The 1800s Western decor creates a fun atmosphere both outside and inside. I came solo at lunchtime on a weekday and was immediately seated at a wooden high-top table near the bar. The friendly woman who was bartending took care of me during my meal, providing excellent service...and extra napkins, which I defintely would need. I ordered the Bonham Brisket Grilled Cheese, a sandwich consisting of slow-cooked brisket and mutiple slices of melted cheese between locally made sourdough bread. (side note: Bonham refers to James Butler Bonham, a brave officer and courier who gave his life at the battle of the Alamo) The sandwich was stuffed with super-tender brisket. The brisket wasn't smoked and had mild flavor, overpowered by the cheese. I used a provided side of fantastic barbecue sauce to kick it up (and also to dip my fries in). The bread of the sandwich was nicely grilled and delicious, definitely greasy (as expected!). I enjoyed it and it filled me up. It's a great place to get some food, especially when visiting the Alamo.

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat after visiting the Alamo and we saw a sign for the Crockett Tavern. This restaurant, inside the Crockett Hotel, is just behind the Alamo. We ordered the country fried chicken and the brisket grilled cheese. The chicken fried chicken was so good but the grilled broccoli that came with it might have been better. The brisket grilled cheese was slathered in butter and the brisket was very tender. Based on our entrees we decided to have the peach crisp for dessert. I normally don't like fruity desserts but this was phenomenal! Our server was friendly and engaging even giving us recommendations on other things to see and do. I love the western decor. There was so much fun stuff to look at.

Crockett's Tavern was a fun place in walking distance to The Alamo. The ambiance was of an old western feel with an Alamo overtone. The drinks and small appetizer was a nice stop to quench the thirst. The service was friendly and informative. Great place to stop in for a bite and drink.

Great place of history , we stopped in to cool down & try cactus fries . Cactus fries are petals of cactus fried in beer batter . An acquired taste I'm sure , as they are crunchy & partial slimy like okra ... Service was perfect , we just stopped in for the history

*** strong drinks, live music, & an ode to David Crockett *** Fun fact before my review: David Crockett did not like being called Davey, although, he is heavily referenced that way. The Crockett Tavern was a brisk walk away from where were staying at the Menger Hotel. Afterwards we had a walking ghost tour, so I wanted a hearty meal for me and my girls on 5.25.2025. Service from the hostess was a bit standoffish. Like she didn't know what she was doing. I do not like that. Our waiter, the guy who also first greeted us, was a chill guy who checked on us an adequate number of times. We ordered the following: + Alamo Cacti ($13.95) - pretty good. It was strong. Lol. I'd order this again. + David Crockett shot ($4.95) - I ordered this at the end of my meal. It came with a shot glass ($5.99) that I later gave to my brother for taking care of some things while I was gone. Did not like the taste so much, but it was fruity and smooth. + Fried green tomatoes ($12.95) - had a kick from the diced jalapenos on the plate but they were cooked just right. Like other entrees, they stuck a little toothpick with The Gonzales Cannon & "Come & Take It" flag. + Betty's Boraccho Bean & Brisket Soup ($6.95) - this was divine Texas comfort food very similar to how my family creates it. It came with tortilla chips but I prefer cornbread. + Crockett Burger with gouda cheese ($15.95) - both of my girls ordered their own. Thank you for cooking it medium! They loved it. The live music (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) was good. Sublime. Stone Temple Pilots. Jimi Hendrix. The vibe of the place was cool too. Some Texas cowboy & Alamo history scattered. Flat screens with pro baseball on. The booth seats were comfortable and the food was hot. Easy to find once you enter the main entrance of the Crockett Hotel. Pretty good spot near the Alamo. Was pleasantly surprised by the hand breaded chicken strips, very crispy and juicy. Fries were good as well. The queso was just okay, the green salsa gave it a weird texture and it wasn't that hot. Service was good and a fun little place.

Reserved a space for a party of 35-40 people in the cafe area and it was a great experience. Emily was a great assist in helping us make our party experience a hit. Hannah and t? (Sorry, it was the young man assisting her). They were excellent in providing drinks and food and giving the party guests a great service. All the guests were saying how awesome they were. Thank you Crockett Tavern for everything you all did to make our ceremony celebration special.

The service wasn't great. The food was tasty though it came out slow. We had a group of 7 they accommodated at lunch without any issues. I would still eat here again. They were short on staff I think. It's right outside the Alamo.

    Great nachos, terrible service.

We arrived at the early part of the dinner time, not really sure what we wanted. The decor is all cowboy paraphernalia and it's lively and casual. We decided to order appetizers and then see if we wanted something else later. The server warned us that there were a few large parties and that wait times might get long. We ordered nachos and coffee, and told the server we weren't in a hurry. The only reason they got any stars was because the nachos were so good. They were layered nicely so most of the chips had some toppings on them. After we finished them, we decided to order dessert. We had said we weren't in a hurry but after the food came nobody ever checked in on us. For 45 minutes we looked at our dirty dishes and waited. Finally, we went to the hostess stand and requested our bill. Our server miraculously showed up. When I told him we would have ordered more food but he ghosted us, he didn't even bother to reply. The hostess apologized but we're from out of town so we'll never be back anyway.

For a starter we shared the cornbread with another couple and it was plenty for 4 people. If you are from out of town and looking for some Texas-shaped vittles or just want something substantial to stretch your meal I recommend it! Very tasty and filling. For my main I had the scallops with creamed corn risotto. It was a dainty portion but the flavors were nice. My husband had the short rib tagliatelle which he loved. It was very rich and filling. We had the buttermilk pie again for dessert and this time it tasted sweeter than I remembered. It was good but we couldn't finish it. Idk if it was my tastebuds or if it was different. Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)

The service somehow felt rushed even though the food itself came out slowly, and there were very few check-ins during the meal. I ordered the Mustang Chicken, and unfortunately it was very disappointing. The chicken was fatty, full of tendon, and tasted more like a frozen piece of chicken that had been dropped into a deep fryer than something I would expect from a restaurant at this price point. It's disappointing because the restaurant has a great atmosphere and our experience at the bar started off so well. Unfortunately, between the table service and the quality of the food, I would not recommend Cappy's based on this visit.
