Located a block or so away from the Alamo, inside the Crockett Hotel, you can enter via the hotel entrance or directly into the restaurant through a patio entrance. The 1800s Western decor creates a fun atmosphere both outside and inside. I came solo at lunchtime on a weekday and was immediately seated at a wooden high-top table near the bar. The friendly woman who was bartending took care of me during my meal, providing excellent service...and extra napkins, which I defintely would need. I ordered the Bonham Brisket Grilled Cheese, a sandwich consisting of slow-cooked brisket and mutiple slices of melted cheese between locally made sourdough bread. (side note: Bonham refers to James Butler Bonham, a brave officer and courier who gave his life at the battle of the Alamo) The sandwich was stuffed with super-tender brisket. The brisket wasn't smoked and had mild flavor, overpowered by the cheese. I used a provided side of fantastic barbecue sauce to kick it up (and also to dip my fries in). The bread of the sandwich was nicely grilled and delicious, definitely greasy (as expected!). I enjoyed it and it filled me up. The place clean, service was fine. No issues. The food, while it wasn't bad, it needed help. Immediate medical attention. I ordered the brisket grilled cheese with a side of tomato soup. 1) the sandwich. Bread was good, good amoutbof properly melted cheese. And a tiny, and i mean tiny slather of chopped brisket. It wasn't an after thought. It wasn't even thought about. Disgraceful. 2) the soup. Shouldn't have been called tomato soup. Should been called almost Luke warm, more tepid than anything tomato paste. My husband and I were looking for a place to eat after visiting the Alamo and we saw a sign for the Crockett Tavern. This restaurant, inside the Crockett Hotel, is just behind the Alamo. We ordered the country fried chicken and the brisket grilled cheese. The chicken fried chicken was so good but the grilled broccoli that came with it might have been better. The brisket grilled cheese was slathered in butter and the brisket was very tender. Based on our entrees we decided to have the peach crisp for dessert. I normally don't like fruity desserts but this was phenomenal! Our server was friendly and engaging even giving us recommendations on other things to see and do. I love the western decor. The Crockett Tavern was a brisk walk away from where were staying at the Menger Hotel. Afterwards we had a walking ghost tour, so I wanted a hearty meal for me and my girls on 5.25.2025. Service from the hostess was a bit standoffish. Like she didn't know what she was doing. I do not like that. Our waiter, the guy who also first greeted us, was a chill guy who checked on us an adequate number of times. We ordered the following: + Alamo Cacti ($13.95) - pretty good. It was strong. Lol. I'd order this again. + David Crockett shot ($4.95) - I ordered this at the end of my meal. It came with a shot glass ($5.99) that I later gave to my brother for taking care of some things while I was gone. Did not like the taste so much, but it was fruity and smooth. + Fried green tomatoes ($12.95) - had a kick from the diced jalapenos on the plate but they were cooked just right. Like other entrees, they stuck a little toothpick with The Gonzales Cannon & "Come & Take It" flag. + Betty's Boraccho Bean & Brisket Soup ($6.95) - this was divine Texas comfort food very similar to how my family creates it. This place is excellent. Walk three blocks east from the Alamo and you'll find the Crockett Tavern, tucked inside the Crockett Hotel at 320 Bonham Street. The restaurant sits in a building that shares a wall with the Alamo compound--close enough that defenders in 1836 could have thrown rocks at the spot where diners now cut into ribeye's and sip bourbon. We stopped in for an early dinner. The name of this restaurant promises frontier swagger and maybe a plate of enchiladas. What you get instead is something San Antonio rarely offers: food that ignores the Tex-Mex playbook entirely. The chef runs the kitchen like he's cooking in Tennessee, not Texas. The menu reads like a love letter to American comfort food filtered through French technique. We tried the Brisket and Bean Tacos, two Tacos with espresso rubbed brisket, refried beans, charred green tomato salsa, and Cotija cheese. Excellent. We also tried the Bowie Beast Burger, a custom ground patty of elk, bison, wild boar, and Wagyu beef, topped with smoked Gouda cheese, fried onions, and a house Tavern sauce. We arrived at the early part of the dinner time, not really sure what we wanted. The decor is all cowboy paraphernalia and it's lively and casual. We decided to order appetizers and then see if we wanted something else later. The server warned us that there were a few large parties and that wait times might get long. We ordered nachos and coffee, and told the server we weren't in a hurry. The only reason they got any stars was because the nachos were so good. They were layered nicely so most of the chips had some toppings on them. After we finished them, we decided to order dessert. We had said we weren't in a hurry but after the food came nobody ever checked in on us. For 45 minutes we looked at our dirty dishes and waited. Finally, we went to the hostess stand and requested our bill. Our server miraculously showed up. When I told him we would have ordered more food but he ghosted us, he didn't even bother to reply. This place is attached to the hotel but the staff are very friendly. They have acoustic music which is very nice. I had the chicken fried chicken plate with was a satisfied meal. The chicken was so tender and the mashed potatoes had seasoned well which blended with the chicken. I also paired my meal with a black lemonade (Adult). I will tell you this, the Bloody Mary she made me was seriously one of the best I've ever tasted! It was absolutely delicious! I was here for a work training and found the Crockett Tavern on Yelp. So, we decided to walk from our hotel down to the tavern. The area looked so historic and it was neat to see the Crockett Hotel sign lit up at night. We seated ourselves and when we arrived around 6:45 on a Wednesday evening it was not that busy but as the night progressed it became busier. Our waiter was great with the exception of how long it took to get beers from the bar that was pretty close to our table but, I do think he was waiting on other tables too so I don't hold that against him. He was an enjoy to have, he told us about growing up in Texas, the building itself, the other restaurants affiliated with the restaurant and even the haunted hotel down the street. I do wish he would have told us about buying the souvenir glass first before having already purchased a couple of beers. If you buy the souvenir glass you get half off beers and are able to do the same at some of the Mad Dog restaurants. I must say the food was delicious! The fried green tomatoes were not mushy and the balsamic vinegar was so yummy! I ordered the brisket grilled cheese with side salad and jalapeños. It was so much food, I ended up taking half of it with me. The other person in my party ordered the chicken sandwich with fries. She said all was delicious! All in all, great atmosphere and food! I was left waiting at the counter for 5 minutes, before a server told me to sit in the back where I liked. No one came by for another five minutes. There was something about the Crockett Tavern that kept drawing us back. It was less hectic than the Menger bar, but more inviting than the bar in the Emily Morgan. (Those are the other two hotels close by.) The drinks were good, and the food was surprisingly better than one might expect for tavern food. My friend was really impressed by the brisket soup. Service was a little bit slow, but the friendliness more than made up for it. There was live music both nights we were there, both men playing country, but it added to the vibe. Excellent service and delicious food! Grew up loving Fess Parker as Davy Crockett on Disney channel, decided to check it out this trip. The history references are both fun and kitschy, perfect for across the street from the Alamo so close to the Riverwalk. Ordered the Chipotle Shrimp Scampi and was delighted by the flavor and the accompanying lime for topping. So far, this is the best restaurant of our time in San Antonio. Atmosphere is perfect and fits right next to the Alamo. It's a block off the river walk and well worth it. We were soon seated and enjoyed the wall decor but neither wait staff would make eye contact with us. Later, a woman tapped the table and said your server will be with you as she scurried away. Soon a short lady (blonde) came by and dropped off two glasses with ice water and was accompanied by a young male with a huge head of wild hair came and asked if we wanted something to drink other than water? I replied that my husband would like a glass of water with no ice. Once we decided, I told the young man that I would like the nachos with bean and cheese but no jalapeños and the garnishes on the side and my husband ordered the shrimp scampi.. Once the order came the waiter plopped down a bowl of corn chips with a smattering of grated cheese. I was shocked, The waiter completely disregarded my request. This is not what I want. He looked at me very personally offended, I said, the cheese isn't even melted, no beans .He proudly announced that he took the liberty of placing all the garnishes in tiny bowls. . I told him that this is not what I was expecting and would not eat it. He abruptly turned and took away the food. About a minute later he reappeared with a small cast iron skillet with 6 small shrimp inside and a slice of buttered sourdough bread. He literally threw the plates down along with the small skillet. He was so upset, he would not make eye contact with me or my husband.. We left a small tip because his treatment of the food and his rude manner did not deserve more. My husband and I have worked in food service and bartenders and we know what excellent service looks like. Crockett Tavern is not the place for excellent service! I was in town for a conference and a group of us came here for dinner as it was close to the hotel. Definitely a casual, laid back vibe with lots of interesting Texas decor and TVs around if you want to watch some sports. As some have said in their reviews, it took a little while to get someone's attention to get seated but once we were seated the service was decent for the rest of our meal. They've got a good selection of food- we got cactus fries and nachos for appetizers and I got the Bowie Beast Burger (elk, bison, wild boar, and wagyu beef blend) for my entree. The appetizers were good sized but nothing noteworthy. I really enjoyed my burger though. The blend of the meats was interesting and it was really tasty. Definitely a mess to eat but finger licking good! My co-workers enjoyed the drinks here so I'd come back again if I was around the Alamo. Great place for a group dinner! read more

My friend graduated Army medic training and we were on a very tight schedule to eat and get her to the airport. We walked in, I asked the first employee Insaw if we could "rush" things. They were more than accommodating. Our waitress came over and apologized for our wait which wasn't necessary at all. She offered a few suggestions and the. Took our orders. The manager made sure the kitchen handled our order promptly. We were able to eat, enjoy the amazing food, and get her to the airport with a few minutes to spare. Our crunched timeline was not their problem at all, but they were very accommodating and I really appreciate that. The bar / restaurant has a lot of cool decorations around. My friend and I were both enjoying the ambiance. After dropping her off at the airport and walking around the area, I found out they have live music outside. It's a really neat place. This restaurant is in the historic Crockett Hotel - and it has great ambience with lots to see inside. You just kind of wander in - we didn't see 'an' entrance (there are several) and catch someone's attention to find out it's open seating. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. They give a 25% military discount (we weren't aware until we asked after the meal) which is really a big discount. So the good - the queso and chips were good. The chips were a good texture and the queso had just a hint of lime - it worked well! my wife ordered the grilled cheese and brisket sandwich with bbq sauce. It was really, really good. The bread had a perfect crunchiness. The cheese, brisket and smoky bbq sauce - very good! The fries were crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside - not anything to write home about good or bad. The coleslaw was not good - it couldn't decide if it wanted to be vinegar based or creamy and it just didn't work. I ordered the chicken fried steak, garlic mashed potatoes and Caesar salad. The mashed potatoes were probably some of the best I've ever had! Sadly, they were the highlight. The Caesar salad also had a vinegary flavor to it - definitely not a Caesar. The chicken fried steak came out as chicken fried chicken. So, they remade it and brought out what was called chicken fried steak but which should have been called chicken fried fried. On the plate it was a generous size - unfortunately, at least 50% of it was breading with no meat. I literally left a pile of breading on my plate that had no meat inside. The service - again - the servers (I'll explain that quirk in a bit) were friendly. The server who took our drink order was never seen again after that. Our initial server was on her first day and she took our order. Another server brought our order. Both asked if we needed more water (we did - we were almost empty) and it took a long time to get and not until after the second inquiry. While we were waiting, there were three other groups of two who also 'wandered in' and who were eventually asked 'have you been helped' and they hadn't. So - the food that was good was really good. Unfortunately, the food that wasn't good was bad. There seemed to be some real issues with lines of communication with the servers - but they were friendly. Would we go back - probably not - too many issues in one meal. Oh - and valet parking at the hotel is $25 . The two nearest parking lots were $30 for up to 2 hours. After just visiting the Alamo this was a super convenient place to grab a bite on the way out of town. The experience of visiting Crockett Tavern felt like stepping into Disney World, with the theme clearly reflected in the background and the attire of the wait staff. My waiter reminded me of Judge Reinhold as Brad Hamilton in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I ordered the BOWIE BEAST BURGER - custom ground patty of elk, bison, wild boar and Wagyu beef. Topped with smoked Gouda cheese, fried onions. (without a side) and a beer off of a pretty decent list of options. The burger is the real reason for the five-star review.
