It was our first taco shop visit in the East Coast area. It is in the heart of Charlestown. VA. The ordered placed at the counter, they accept credit cards and credit card on smartphone. The restaurant has limited indoor seatings. It was very clean. The price was a bit more expensive comparing to the taco shops in the West Coast. Food was served within timely manner. But the tacos were medicore. I ordered 2 street tacos and 1 regular size taco, and 1 fish taco. The carne asada was good, but not the tortilla. The white corn tortilla were not grilled nor warmed up which lacked the flavor of the white corn. The fish in the fish taco was so so. I've wanted to stop in many times and finally stopped in on a (taco) Tuesday. I ordered 2 fish soft tacos, 2 carne asada soft tacos, and a large queso (no chips) - to go - and my total was $29. Not terrible but a bit pricey for 4 tacos. I waited about 10 minutes for my order - not bad at all. While I waited, I wandered around the attached store, Bushel & Peck. Very cute setup and I like that I can visit both businesses. The fish tacos were REALLY good! The batter and crispiness is what makes this taco outstanding. I didn't try the carne asada but my husband said they were a close 2nd place to the fish tacos. The cheese, however, was disappointing. It was basic ballpark/7-11 type cheese. Very lackluster and had that "out of a can" taste. I'm a (self proclaimed) queso connoisseur and this cheese was extremely disappointing. We barely ate any of it so now I have a styrofoam container of liquid cheese that I'll need to "doctor" so I can use it on something else. We would definitely stop in again, and I'm looking forward to trying the breakfast burritos, but the queso is a hard pass. read more

We live 5 minutes from the shop and ordered food to go. I ordered a burrito bowl and it was pretty disappointing. The chicken was cold and chewy all the while, my bowl wasn't necessarily full either for a $10 dollar bowl. My fiancé ordered a fish taco, and when she opened the foil, it looked like a frozen fish patty that you'd get at a grocery store. I've been going here a few years now. Prior to the pandemic it was one of the best places around. During the pandemic it was a nightmare like some other places. Since the pandemic it has never rebound. Let's take a Breakfast Burito for example, Old tasting ingredients that I suppose they didn't want to throw away. Not cooked well. not seasoned well. Same is true for most items we've tried, old tasting ingredients far from fresh. The prices are absurdly high. Most people including myself would be OK paying a little more for a fresh delicious meal. However, it's far from fresh and far from delicious. Today I was in the mood for tacos so I ordered the machaca beef taco. This is a chewy taco, and a couple of those hit the spot. Ortega's is my go-to spot anytime I'm in downtown Charles Town. It's attached to Bushel & Peck market and across the street from Abolitionist Ale Works. The only down side is it's closed on Sunday, but everything on the menu is good and reminds me of taco joints in San Diego. And the vibe is perfect for downtown with high ceilings, exposed brick, and a shaded outdoor breezeway for al fresco dining. read more

Who would've thought one of the best taco places I've ever tried would be in the middle of a small WV town? Tacos are excellent here and they give you a ton of food, I tried the carnitas street taco, slow cooked pork taco, and the slow cooked beef taco and I enjoyed them all. The chips must be homemade too because they're thicker than most places and are very tasy with the hot salsa. This place is pretty small since somone said it's a former Dariy Queen but they have tables outside too so grab one of those if the weather is okay. This is the place for a cheap and tasty lunch if you're in the area, it's definitely worth the short drive from Harper's Ferry after a day of hiking and touristing. read more

I really like the chips here, they are my favorite style. The hot salsa is perfect too... I occasionally stop in to buy a bag for takeaway. Yummy yum yum! But, you get different amounts of salsa included depending on who is at the counter. It's annoying. One container is just not enough, I need three actually. If the older lady is at the register, you get one, and charged for anything beyond that. Others say you get two, but will give you a third if you ask.... Set a standard people! Either provide enough Salsa to enjoy the amount of chips, or don't offer it at all. Think: Mexican Restaurant, where it's free with a meal! I've been there for several 99 cent Taco Tuesdays, and have determined that it's not really that great of a deal. The tacos don't seem to made to the same standard as they are on other days and the choices are limited I think I would just rather pay a little bit more for a better taco. I think I liked this place the best the first time I visited, but I'm less enthusiastic with each successive visit. I found Ortega's Taco Shop, with nearly five stars and One review that said the place was cute and clean. Another said they were "off the chain". We laughed about it and decided to check them out. Oh man! So glad we did! Finding good tacos in VA has proved impossible. And technically this place in actually in West VA. We still have yet to find good tacos in VA. I live over an hour away from this place and my hubby and I are obsessed. We make the drive once or twice a month just for these tacos. The food is amazing, amazingly cheap and the service is always quick and friendly. If you are a fan of simple but yummy street tacos hit this place up! They really are "off the chain"! read more

I stayed overnight in Charlestown, and I ate at Ortegas twice in two days. Between my friends and I, we tried many items on the menu, and as far as I can tell, it was all fantastic! The special, three tacos for five dollars, is an amazing deal. Two minor improvements needed in my opinion: 1. Since there is no indoor dining, due to Covid, more outdoor benches would be nice while customers wait. 2. Even though we all ordered spicy rather than mild dishes, nothing was spicy at all. They could kick it up a notch, or supply some additional jalapeños on the side. All things considered, I will go back again. Sidenote there is a lovely produce market right next-door. read more

One word BLAND. Perhaps the flavor was in the salsa? The carne asada itself had NO FLAVOR. Even with the 1/4 slices of tiny limes. The predominant flavor was the onions. The refried beans needed any flavor. Salt did not help. The salsa, which I had on the side was 'hot'. Not really any flavor, just hot. The bright spot was the guacamole. Fresh and tasty!
