When we arrived everyone (Cashier, trainer and cook) were on their phone as there was no-one else in the location. Friday night and dead empty, so we had the place to ourselves. We went up to the cashier who was training a new employee and they were very friendly and waited for us to decide what we'd like to order. My daughter chose a quesadilla, my wife a salad bowl and I chose the burrito. We ordered chips and salsa plus cheese sauce. The food came out hot, flavorful and nicely prepared. The burrito was stuffed and made well with just the right seasonings, a little too much rice to meat ratio but that's to be expected these days. The salad bowl was nice but looked a bit odd as all the toppings and meat were at the bottom and the chopped romaine on top. The quesadilla was well made, hot and grill marked as expected. The sides of sour cream and salsa were cold and pre portioned. Overall the food scored well in flavor, presentation, temperature and speed of service. The lackluster side of the operation dragged that down. No music, no availability of hot sauces, and the wall or heat not even plugged in and lit up or filled up. They mainly had two sauces available and had one per section at best. The other ones we wanted were there but empty, as well as the sauce at the table. Lastly the disgusting hot sauce spilled all over the condiment container was not very appealing, appetizing or clean. I just pushed it aside and went about the meal. It's a shame to see what was once a vibrant dining location ended up as a dull, lifeless operation. Probably best to order to go and perhaps that's what they were going for that night. Bathrooms were clean, soda station needed to be wiped down, sauce racks cleaned and stocked and table condiment racks boiled and sanitized. Meh at best. Suggest you bring your own hot sauce, and container of sanitizer wipes plus hand sanitizer. read more

Worst Cal Tortilla I've ever been to, it's very dirty /dark/ depressing inside and looks run down. Very neglected. Employees look miserable taking order and making the food. Food is never fresh and doesn't meet the standards of what this establishment should be. I've tried 3 different times with the same outcome each time. Well, i guess i should have read the review before ordering. I wanted something different for a change but after spending $26 to have 1 meal delivered that is not good i guess i will stick to what i know is good. I got the California Screamin' BurritoSpicy in a bowl- this is what is supposed to come in it. Blackened chicken, queso, fajita veggies, California Screamin' sauce and pico de gallo salsa. I asked for my sauce on the side, green sauce, i got red, I asked for no salsa, no salsa came on it. I got sour cream on the side and cheese, i paid and received those and guac and chip as my side, i got those. The bowl is supposed to have queso and there isn't any, the chicken is supposed to be blackened and its not its hard and crusty and dry even with all the sauces and sour cream and guac. I'm disappointed to say the least. After writing my review and stewing over my thoughts I decided to call and speak to the manager, he is going to refund my order and was sorry. read more

I've had good experiences at other California Tortillas in the past and have found it more interesting than the other major tex-mex place starting with a C, so I purposely drove 5 minutes past it to get some variety. I should have turned around when I entered and saw no other customers inside on a Friday evening. Unfortunately, the food was bland and just not interesting. Like a bunch of unseasoned ingredients with a not great sauce dumped on top. Two chili peppers spice level gave me no buzz. How could you mess it up? I'm not sure, but if this was my first visit I would not return. Love California Tortilla whenever we come up North, however this area in particular is the first time we came to. Our go-to and only one thing we've tried is the "California Screamin," which has chicken or black beans, rice, queso, fajita veggies, California Screamin' sauce & salsa. My husband & I always get California Screamin' burritos, but this time, he got a bowl and I stick with burrito (minus chicken, but black beans). If you haven't tried this place or haven't tried "California Screamin" dish, I HIGHLY recommend that you do! It's beyond delicious! No hate on Chipotle, but it's much better for than that! California Tortilla locations are in the DMV [Delaware, Maryland & Northern Virginia) area. At this specific location, the sauces were limited and there wasn't as many topping options as the other locations. Gross!! The main reason for my review is the cleanliness and ambiance of the place... The ladies restroom was "out of order" so I used the men's... the men's restroom smelled absolutely horrible!! Like it had NEVER been cleaned. There was an active leak under the sink. As soon as I washed my hands, it went right through, like there was no pipe, straight into a bucket under the sink that looks and SMELLED like it never had been dumped out. If everyone has to use the men's restroom then at least take care of it!! I ordered three tacos, two of which were Korean BBQ - tasted pretty good! The third one was a "screamin" taco... unfortunately the tomatoes/ pico de gallo that was on top of the screamin taco looked super old , so I didn't eat it. 10/15/22 - I was almost going to ask hubby if he wanted to get tonight's dinner from Cal Tort in Ranson but he had his mind set on Subways. We parked in this general area. Driving by, he said it looked like it was closed. Then we saw a customer going up to the door. Hubs said she didn't get in. I'm thinking that's odd as Sat.,hours showed they were open til 9pm. Treated the family to burritos and bowls from California Tortilla today. The wait was not long and we ordered 7 bowls/burritos. The staff was friendly and the food was good. I ordered a chicken bowl with all the fixins. I'll visit again, but I was a little put off by charging $1.75 extra for fajita veggies. In my opinion, those should be free, like everywhere else. The staff at this restaurant were friendly and nice. Unfortunately, I just had the worst fish taco ever there! There was no flavor except that of mold. Seriously, after tasting mold, I took a tiny bite of the fish and that was what had the moldy taste. After that, I just threw it in the trash. They did do one thing right. I asked for no cilantro and they didn't put any on my taco. Also, my husband had a vegetarian burrito which he said was edible but 2/3 was rice. First let's clear up one thing: there is a one star review posted for this restaurant that is an utter lie. The reviewer stated that the "beef was in the shape of a block. Obviously not fresh. May be made from powder. Taco Bell has better ground beef." Well, let's see.. First of all beef can't be "made from powder", so that statement is just stupid. Second, the beef ground cooked ground beef when you get it.. so unless the reviewer was standing in the kitchen (which wouldn't be allowed), the only time they saw the meat was when it was already cooked and ready to serve... at which point it had already been squeezed into a burrito or taco, so it probably could have looked like a log or a block at that point... but to assume it wasn't fresh is stupid.... And to say that Taco bell has better meat - Just nonsense. With that garbage out of the way, on to the rest of the review. California Tortilla serves a variety of burritos and tacos, along with salads, quesadillas and a few sides. A lot of people think that California Tortilla is pricey until they see the size of the burritos... They are quite large. There is a variety of meats, veggies, and other options to customize your order. The real hit for me is the "Wall of Flame" with the dozens and dozens of sauces to choose from. They have a wide variety of flavors and different heats, from mild to "oh my god why did I eat that". The queso, I have to admit, is not the greatest... but I never it it plain anyway. I mix mine with the salsa and one of the many hot sauces and it tastes great. The salsa and guacamole are very good. It is actually fresh, chunky salsa with a good bit of cilantro.... none of that stereotypical grocery store salsa that is too much liquid with a few chunks of veg and no cilantro to be seen nonsense. To be honest though, they could get rid of all the burritos and everything else and I would still go as long as they kept serving their fish tacos. The fish tacos have chunks of fried spicy blackened fish - and a lot of it - with cabbage slaw, fresh cilantro, and a chipotle sour cream. They come with a side and drink for under $10, which is a pretty good deal. They taste even better with a splash of the cilantro sauce from the Wall of Flame. Since the Chinese retaurant in the same plaza closed down (and is being replaced by a Subway of all things... yuck), California Tortilla is a great option for a quick lunch. First time ordering from California Tortilla this week. We decided to make an online order so it was easier for my husband to pick up. I ordered 3 burritos, an order of chips/queso, and 1 kids meal quesadilla. When my husband got home with the order, the kids meal was missing the drink and cookie that was supposed to come with it. I can't say I was impressed with the flavor of the burritos we received. I had taco beef and unless it was mixed in with the sour cream and tomatoes it was one bland flavor. My husband had ordered the Korean BBQ and it was quite spicy for his taste--but my father ate it without issue and said it didn't seem spicy to him. I can't say I was ever missing out on not eating here. It makes me leery to order online again when some items are never received. read more

Let me say that this is on par with Chipotle. They have the added theme of focusing on hot sauces. So after you order your meal, you can choose from an entire wall of hot sauces to add "flavor" to your meal. Is this authentic Mexican food? No. But it's tasty and hits the spot. Gotta say I was expecting a bit more. I frequent quite a few Mexican restaurants and Burrito joints, and this one will be low on my list next time. First off, the serving/ordering system seems quite backwards from what I would've expected. Unlike other shops, you do not walk down the prep area as they are making your order and select your toppings and such. Instead, you just order from the counter and wait, which seem like a waste of the really nicely designed prep area out on the floor. Also, there is an up charge for just about every add-on offered. Now to the food... I had a carnitas burrito... Very disappointing. Lacked flavor, a few solid chunks of bland pork, mushy rice... I was left feeling I would've been better off with a burrito from Sheetz. My wife had a mango Caribbean mixed green salad, dressing on the side. The salad was predominantly iceberg lettuce, and only half her dressing came on the side... The other half was on her salad, she was not a happy camper. All the kids had Nachos with cheese. They were happy, as kids tend to be, but when I sampled some of their uneaten nachos I was blown away by how salty and flavorless the cheese was, like a watered down velveta sauce with a cup of salt thrown in. I could almost feel my blood pressure go up and fingers swell as I swallowed! One of my favorite places in Ranson! Super fresh food and very friendly staff. If you like hot sauces, they have over 70 different types to try. They also have the freestyle machines and tons of different ingredients, you can really create something different every time and never repeat! This place is great. I have been to many different burrito places and this one may top the list. First thing i noticed walking inside was how colorful and clean the restaurant is. Smells like heaven! Unlike most places i have been to, California tortilla has signature burrito recipes like the California screamer and Korean BBQ. However, I prefer to create my own which this place also allowed me to do. I usually opt for chicken but was recommended the steak which was amazing. The steak was much better tasting than other burrito palaces such as chipotle. Try the steak on a quesadilla... amazing! the cheese sauce here is the best around, better than any of the competition - its thick and cheesy. You can even customize your cheese sauce experience by adding any of the 100s of hot sauces on their Wall of Flame. Nothing beats this place! Perfect spot for a first date too! read more
