Osceola Cheese offers a large variety of cheeses that are manufactured specifically for this facility to sell. I heard it was actually made In Wisconsin but that is nowhere on the label. Unfortunately the cheese is no longer made locally- the factory is gone but the cheese store lives on. The cheese we got was great quality- good texture and perfect saltiness. Decided to stop in while we were driving from KC to the Fantastic Caverns on a whim! Pretty fun stop! I'm not sure I believe the billboards when they say there are 275+ types of cheese, but there certainly is a lot to choose from! About half way between Missouri's largest and third largest city is the Osceola Cheese store. It had been about a decade since I had stepped inside, but in my younger days it was my frequent and favorite stop when visiting my older brother in Springfield. It was slightly disappointing to visit this weekend during the Covid crisis because the free self serve sample cups are no longer available, but over the years of over indulging in free cheese, I already knew which flavors I was attracted to. I picked up a nice block of horseradish and another of creamy garlic. The other MUST purchase item is the packages of rye garlic chip crackers - addictive since childhood. My two new impulse purchases were dill pickle pretzel sticks and a jar of sea-salt caramel honey butter; which is my new addiction; in 2 days half the jar is gone! I'm gonna need an excuse for a southbound road trip again very soon! If my flavor choices don't excite you, don't stress because there is about 200 more cheese flavors available and every noshing option in endless varieties from meats to wines to olives and pickles. This is like something you'd expect up in Wisconsin, but right here in MO. *Side note, don't eat the cheese off the toothpicks directly, it's the equivalent of double-dipping and it's kinda gross to see people do this!* Seriously take your time trying them all and enjoying them because you'll be surprised that some of the odd flavors might become your favorite. You can then purchase little blocks or big ones to take home, which you gotta do. It's a fun stop on the road to nowhere - or somewhere in between. The people who run it are often nice Missourians of some report - I've stopped here every year on my way to my families' yearly reunion towards the past and away from growth and change. We toil and trek a long distance to once again see the humans we share things with, and oftentimes these very same people exist daily within earshot of each other; confounding. Nevertheless, each and every vehicle in line at the reunion is stocked with some number of meat sticks, crunchie things, and an inordinately inappropriate amount of cheeses of various shape and colors. If you happen to be traveling from KC to Springfield (or vice versa), during the daytime; this is an interesting place to stop and take a break. Came in on a busy Saturday afternoon and there was plentiful parking and easy access from the highway. The odd thing is how small the place is. I figured I'd be walking into a cheese emporium. Instead there's 1 grocery isle running the length of the store (with chips, popcorn, pork rinds, pickles, jams, hot sauces, etc.) and behind it is an open 4-shelf refrigerated one sided isle also running the length of the store. The saying may go "good things come in small packages", but having a little more elbow room would've been great. There were no less than 50 (larger) souls crammed around the cheese. Oddly, it seemed as though people were walking from one end, very slowly, to the other end, while stopping to try every cheese possible. This makes it awfully difficult when you're someone that means business and you're trying to snag enough cheese to cause a heart attack. It probably took the better part of half an hour to walk the 40-50' or so of fridge space and acquire 8 blocks of cheese. If you were to minus the people just stopping in for free samples, I bet it would've taken about 1/10th of the time...just saying. Guess what I'm trying to say is that if you're a cheese lover, you should definitely stop in. But PRO TIP: give yourself time as it could randomly be quite busy and take a while to get what you want. If this place were say double the size and it wasn't so painful to get what you want, I'd easily give this joint 5 stars as they've got about 40+ different cheeses and all of them that I've tried so far were pretty amazing. read more

Located about halfway between Kansas City and Springfield along Highway 13, Osceola Cheese is a popular roadtrip stopover point for our family. With a huge selection of cheese, plus other snacking items, most anyone can find something to enjoy. PROS The star here is the cheese! They advertise "over 275 kinds of cheese" -- and while I've never counted, I don't doubt it. It is worth noting that many of their most popular varieties are available in standard, "smoked," and "applewood smoked" -- meaning that their sharp cheddar actually counts as 3 items. They carry standard American medium and firm cheeses (cheddar, swiss, jack, etc) with a few hard varieties (parmesan, pecorino). If you are looking for imports or soft cheeses (brie and similar), this isn't the place. Think of Osceola Cheese as the place to get good versions of your favorite snacking cheeses. While many of their cheese are about the same quality as standard supermarket varieties, there are some that really stand out. My personal favorites are the smoked string cheese (especially the slightly costlier "hand-pulled" version, with its distinctive bent shape) and the muenster (standard or with added bacon). The muenster is notably better than most supermarket varieties, with a wonderfully salty rind and soft, mellow interior. Since almost everyone that passes through is on their way somewhere else, the restroom situation is worth noting. They have two "banks" of restrooms: one in the main food section of the store and a second in the gift shop area. Good to know: since most folks don't go into the gift shop those restrooms are usually less crowded, and sometimes cleaner. CONS During heavy travel days, especially in the summer, Osceola Cheese can be quite crowded. It isn't uncommon for a tour bus to stop and discharge 40 or 50 tourists into the store in a giant wave. The staff is good, but the queues for the register aren't clearly marked and can get confused when it's really crowded. Don't expect to get discount prices on the cheese; you will pay as much, or more, as a standard supermarket brand -- but, you are also getting access to lots of unique or hard to find combos, so the pricing makes sense. While I totally understand and support the removal of the free samples due to the COVID pandemic, I do miss them! It was a great way to see if you wanted to commit to a fairly expensive block of cheese, or if that variety just wasn't for you. Maybe someday... OVERALL Osceola Cheese is a great mid-roadtrip stop with good-enough restrooms, an overabundance of gift-shop nicknacks, lots of snack options, and amazing cheese. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a solid win for our family -- our kids (6 & 3) now insist on visiting the "cheese store" anytime we make the trip along Highway 13. This is a tough one to review. On the one hand, there are so many different kinds of cheese, that if you're a cheese fan like I am you want to try them all, but it's too expensive to do so shopping at your local Safeway, so being able to do so in a place like this is great. On the other hand, some people treat this place like their own private buffet. There were entire families in there going down the aisle basically having lunch and ignoring everybody else who was trying to check out the different cheeses, and then they would leave without buying anything. It was a bit uncontrolled and irritating. It was also a bit concerning seeing how people would go through the cheese tester containers with their used tooth picks and a part of me couldn't help but think it was a bit unsanitary. Having said this, their selection of cheeses was wonderful. We did get around to trying most of them, and have more than a few new favorites. A must visit even if it's not on your travel route. You won't be disappointed. Try to go during the week, other than the weekend otherwise you'll be waiting in line a while. I received a confirmation from Osceola Cheese that my order was being processed. A few days later I received my order, but it was short 3 packages of cheese that I had ordered. I called the store and was told that the 3 packages of cheese not received, was because they had run out of it. They sent me an email refunding me the cost of the cheese that I had not received. They made no other attempt to contact me regarding my order, or the shortage. If I had known that a large part of my order was not available, I would have cancelled my order and placed it at a later date, when all their products were available. In order for me to get the remainder of my order, I will have to pay an additional $30.00 for shipping/insurance. If you place an order on line, just know that they may send you a partial order, with no notice of any shortages, and then charge you the full cost of shipping. This makes their expensive cheese VERY expensive. So if I place an additional order to get the remainder of the previous order that I never received, and they are out of everything except for one type of cheese that I want, will they send me that one package of cheese, with no notice of the shortage, and charge me another $30.00 for shipping/insurance, again? While taking in the heartland during a recent drive from KC to Springfield for work - I saw a lot of new and interesting parts of the county I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to. For example, Osceola Cheese! After several road markers notifying me of how many more miles I had until this mysterious Osceola Cheese - I was sold that I had to see what this place was all about. One, for the fun and quirky name, and two, because...well...it's cheese. So, on my drive back to KC I finally rewarded myself for the long drive (3 hrs to KC and back) to and fro in one day with a little visit to Osceola Cheese. My pot at the end of the proverbial rainbow if you will. And though I only sampled a few, those samples were delicious. And I did enjoy that they had a sample for every cheese sold, because it's just overwhelming to peruse all the choices, let alone try to imagine what they all taste like. However, the sampling set-up didn't seem to be the most sanity. Nevertheless - it's an understatement to say the cheese range was large. This cheese game isn't for amateurs. I finally succumbed to variations on cheeses I know best - cheddar, Swiss, and gouda.
