Oskar's Café Went with my coworkers to Oskar's Café for lunch today and ended up having a better meal than I expected. I ordered the hamburger steak with gravy and onions, plus fried okra and corn nuggets on the side. The hamburger steak was about what you'd expect -- nothing fancy, but solid comfort food. I was happy to see the okra wasn't thickly breaded -- it was thin, crispy, and you could actually see the okra through the coating. That's my favorite kind! The corn nuggets were okay, just not something I'd go out of my way for. After the meal, we tried an appetizer of their giant cheese balls -- definitely something new for me. The cheese inside was a bit runny, so I probably wouldn't get them again, but everyone else around us seemed to love them. Our server was on time and generally adequate, though she did let my tea run dry and I had to flag her down for a refill. A local favorite. Most days they are packed for lunch and dinner. The dining room is not elegant or fancy by any means. Very casual dinig atmosphere with wooden tables and lake decor. Most entrees are fried wih a country flare. There are a few healthy options, but not many. I had fried catfish and another member of our party had fried chicken. Both were absolutely mouthwatering! Greeting at door was great.? Our party was already seated. The server was patient as it was our first time. Husband ordered a Grilled Chicken Salad . He said he liked the way the chicken was chopped small to match the rest of the salad. I had a grilled chicken sandwich with a baked potato. It was cooked perfectly. We've been coming here for some years when visiting Lake Martin, as it's a local staple. We have their t-shirts as well. Food is good and the service is friendly. You have to go soon after opening, as the parking fills quickly. We went recently and tried to order the BBQ. They said they were out. Wish they could make more of some of the menu items in advance. The BBQ is a regular menu item, not a special. We also ordered grilled fish (in lieu of the BBQ) but it arrived to the table fried. We didn't make a big deal of it, and they took it off the ticket upfront, which we appreciated, as we didn't expect nor request this. Their cobblers are good. The BEST item is the fried cheese. Found Oskar's for a quick lunch today with my husband thanks to reading someone's yelp review talking about how much her husband loves the burger. Let me just say that burger was AMAZING. What a lucky find! We stumbled upon this place during a road trip and now I'm sad that I don't live nearby so I can return. The staff were attentive and very friendly. Oh how we love Oscar's Cafe! We've been eating here for better than 10 yrs, and have always gotten hot fresh food. You gotta get there before the crowds(5pm) or be prepared to wait. There are always specials on the white board when you come, Fried Shrimp plate is always good. This time, Oscar's had Royal Reds as appetizers, needless to say are main course was Royal Reds n a tossed salad. PERFECT! Oscar's is a time honored establishment with a rustic lakeside decor. Bottom line, we're glad we decided to eat here! The place was full of folks when we got there. Mostly locals! There was a lot to choose from in their menu. It all sounded good. I ordered their Seafood Platter which consisted of Shrimp, Oysters, and their famous Catfish. It came with two sides and I ordered Fried Okra and their Brunswick Stew. My wife ordered their Catfish Fillet Platter with Fries and a side Salad. It was all very good. We actually ordered an Appetizer too, their Fried Cheese Balls. These were awesome. If you do decide to come this way, we highly recommend Oskar's. Come hungry! Note: The attire is very casual. There's plenty of parking. It's a great family place. Great little place I found on Yelp and we were not disappointed. I got the blackened catfish, which was probably some of the best seasoned fish I've ever had. My husband ordered the ribeye, which he loved, but after sampling my catfish, he said he wants to order it next time. The atmosphere is casual and I'm assuming because it's off the beaten path and popular with the locals that's why we were getting some stares from the other customers. I could feel the "Who are they? They're not from around here" looks, but we just laughed it off. It was also surprisingly diverse, with whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians all noted - not shocking, but still good to see in rural Alabama. We've had 2 separate people ask us if we tried the Cheese Ball appetizers and when we said no, they practically apologized. So apparently we need to get those next time! The service was great, but the food was not. Every visit to the lake we come here and it's been great but this time was disappointing. The server did apologize to us about the long wait time and said she would discount our food. She took off a drink. The steak I ordered was not SEASONED. I put salt on pepper on it, which helped some. It was tender and cooked like I wanted it, but a little flavor would have helped. I know they were struggling because that's what the waitress said, but as long aa this place has been opened, they've had crowds before at this volume. It was just not a good experience.
