I really wish I would have seen the reviews on BBB before I ordered with OWC. Where to even begin with my saga. I ordered a Apple MacBook Pro from OWC with the 2 year eclipse plus protection. When my laptop arrived, upon first power up it made a loud static/crackling noise and clear liquid (I'm assuming water) came out of the keyboard! Once the computer was on I noticed there was a defect in the screen, about 4-5 inches of white spots/streaks across the center. When I emailed them about this issue, they sent a one sentence response that told me to send pictures/videos. I sent pictures (I took a picture of the screen with my cell phone, the screen happened to be opened to the customer support email thread), which the customer support representative responded that there were no files attached. So I sent the pictures AGAIN, to which she said the file was unreadable and that I needed to send her my email address, shipping address, and invoice number which didn't make sense considering all that info was in my initial email. I sent pictures for the THIRD time, this time as jpegs and pdfs. Her response was "Kindly refrain from sending us the same email that we sent you. The picture was not downloadable and cannot be read/seen. You need to attached it to your email so we can proceed with your RMA not a screenshot of our email." Which means that she can in fact see the pictures I have been sending her. I sent additional pictures and threatened to report to the better business bureau, and they finally said I could send in the laptop for their team to confirm the damage and once they confirmed the damage, they would replace it (I have to pay for the shipping btw). This back and forth email conversation lasted for an entire month. Obviously I was extremely distrustful at this point, so I contacted a different team member to ask about the exchange process. He looked up my case and immediately saw the pictures I had emailed showing the screen damage, and said I needed to send MORE pictures of the water and audio of the static noise. Really?? That's all he has to say after everything?? Then he said that the reason his co-worker could not read the pictures is because she is far-sighted and she could not see the pictures because they were too bright. Is this a joke?? This entire experience feels like a scam. Who knows what would happen if I sent them the laptop. I am extremely distrustful that they would acknowledge the damage and actually replace it. I will NEVER EVER order from this company again. Terrible mistake. read more

They sell you refurbished parts and i had to return a hard drive twice!!! Finally on the third return i received a new one. Cheap parts that are NOT backed by apple. I also bought a replacement battery for my macbook air and it is worse than the original battery. Terrible will never use them again. I ordered two 85w Magsafe 2 chargers from their website at $55 each. Unfortunately, despite the genuine claim on their website they are in fact fake chargers. When you plug in the chargers the charging indicator immediately turns green and starts charging your laptop. Authentic chargers are designed to take a few seconds to make sure that it sends the proper power signal to your computer. Over the past decade I have probably used about 10-15 different authentic macbook chargers and none of them have ever immediately started charging. Additionally, the production/certification text on the charger was also quite a bit different from authentic chargers further proving that these are fake chargers. Despite the fact that they send you fake chargers and claim they are genuine they actually do have a good customer service department. I was able to get my refund processed promptly so that I could go purchase some real chargers at Best Buy. read more

I bought 2 MagSafe 2 power adapters back in August. They are NOT genuine Apple and caused a short in my MacBook Pro. It cost me nearly $200 to fix my MacBook, and 6 trips to the certified Apple store to diagnose and fix the problem. I bought 2 REAL MagSafe adapters and my problem was solved. They won't give me my money back and offered store credit. I don't want or need any of their products. Live and learn. After reading other Yelp reviews I see I am not the only one who received a FAKE product. Their line about other manufacturers is BS. They are good fakes until you compare to the real deal (sloppy construction at joints). When you plug it into your laptop the light comes on immediatly, causing a spark that burns you laptop charging plug. read more

I ordered a used MacBook Pro 2015 in "very good" condition from OWC. When I booted it up I found it had several "hot spots" on the display. The spots were most noticeable on a white background, such as documents and many web pages. I mean, expected some minor defects, and apart from this issue the MacBook looked great and worked fine. I spent a couple of hours using the machine to see if I'd stop noticing the spots, but ultimately decided it was very distracting, and more than I could accept, so I decided to return it. I submitted a return request online the day after the MacBook arrived. When I didn't get a response for two days I began to get apprehensive. Still this was during the Coronavirus crisis, so I realized they could be short-staffed and working under strain. When I called, to my relief, the Customer Service rep I spoke with could not have been more helpful!!! He agreed that this was defect was not usual or acceptable, and set up the return authorization immediately! I've bought drives and RAM and enclosures from OWC many times over the years, and was always satisfied with their stuff. While I was disappointed about the defective display, the OWC Customer Service addressed the problem with no hassle whatever. read more

DO NOT patronize this place. Below is an actual transcript with Sam K of OWC regarding a hard drive (SSID) that went bad in my MacBook Air. What OWC is really saying below is, we sell equipment under warranty, unless we sell to resellers, then the warranty applies to the reseller, but not to the buyer of the equipment from the reseller. When I contacted the reseller, I was told I had to contact OWC, as the parts are theirs. Then, when I took the laptop to a licensed APPLE tech store, they confirmed the SSID had completely failed, and confirmed the part was from OWC, giving me the serial number and the part number, and saying it was still under warranty based on the serial number, but OWC had to be the one to replace it. So, I now have to pay out-of-pocket for a new hard drive, less ALL my data, simply because OWC sells to resellers and the warranty only applies to the purchaser. The below is the final paragraph from a 80 minute chat, that was passed off from their normal customer service chat person. Like the Seinfeld episode noted - OWC knows how to "make" the sale, they just don't know how to "keep" a customer. "I am sorry that you having issues with the drive. The computer was not one of ours. The drive that is in the computer is one of ours. Looking at the original order for the drive, we sold it to one of our resellers. I do not know if they sold it to Mac of all trades or if it was purchased in the computer. This is actually a warranty transfer. From the original purchase which was in 2014. I would need to set up the warranty transfer and have you use a credit card for that transfer fee. After that is done I can do the Advanced Replacement on the drive with a credit card authorization for the cost of the drive. You would not be charged for the drive unless it was not returned. With Apple testing the drive, they would not have tried to update the FirmWare on the drive which does normally fix these types of issues with drives." read more

The situation goes even worse after my screen falls down, smashes due to the failing adhesive tape. After numerous calls and e-mails with the OWC customer services they say it's not their responsibility, I should have had professional support doing the upgrades. Their laptop batteries are junk. $100 battery that is performing the same as the four year old one I wanted to replace. And they won't take them back. They finally stopped emailing me. Just no response. Amazingly poor service and useless product. Too bad, because they were good. ps. Buy your SSDs from B&H photo in NY. Samsung. Cheaper and work great. UPDATE: Finally they write. And they even send me another battery. That battery also performs terribly. Two bad batteries in a row. Now I've wasted a lot of time switching out batteries and I have two bad batteries and they have my money. They offer to refund the money - just send the batteries back. 10/19/2013: A year ago, I bought a 500GB external hard drive from them - one of their On-the-Go Pro models. I bought it to back up my laptop. Long story short - I went through three hard drives in the last year and they all failed. Each was used approximately two or three times before failing. When I asked for a credit towards another one, they said they couldn't because it wasn't their policy. Well then, my policy is to shop somewhere else! Save your money for a reliable product that will work more than a few months. fast forward to today, 11/8/13: Since my initial review, I received immediate communications from OWC to Ken M. (my name is Karl, thanks) apologizing for three failed hard drives and that I could return the last one for a refund of $97 - what I paid for it. I sent it back using their label and packed it myself very well. However, I noticed my refund amount was for only $68. After asking why, I was told I didn't return the original packaging or CD software (which was never an issue with my two other returns in the past year) and that was the reason for the smaller amount. I was excited to find an affordable SSD upgrade for my MacBook Pro and placed an order for a 480GB card. A week later an email arrived from one of the sales reps asking me for a verification of the credit card in order to reprocess the order, and an assurance that my item will be shipped as soon as it's in stock. I was never informed that it wasn't in stock when the order was placed. A week after that e-mail I checked the status of my order on OWC's website, and sure enough the order still has not been processed and the SSD had not been shipped. I can't speak for the quality of this company's products, but I can say that when communication and service commitment is this poor from a major vendor, that warrants some red flags. read more

Terrible Quality Control. I had my iMac upgraded by OWC with a solid state drive. When I got the iMac back, my superdrive no longer worked and there was a large bit of dust on the inside of the monitor glass that casts a shadow on the LCD. (In order to add an SSD, they have to remove the LCD. OWC got the inside of the glass dirty when doing so.) I contacted support and they had me ship the computer back out to them for repair (on my own dime - over 60 dollars to ship). When OWC received the computer they told me that the dust inside the glass was cleaned, but that they can't even look at my non-functional superdrive because it wasn't in warranty. I asked them to replace it and they charged me to do so. After being without my computer for a month while they fixed what they broke, the iMac was finally returned to me. I powered it on and immediately noticed that the dust that they said that they cleaned was not cleaned. It only takes turning the computer on to notice the dust. Obviously, OWC didn't care to understand the issue or check their work. Terrible service. Terrible quality. UPDATE: ----------------------- I understand that by stating that I didn't complain until December, that must mean that my story is false and that the speck of dust must have crept between the LCD and the glass sometime after the iMac was returned to me in perfect condition. You know enough about these machines to know that doesn't happen -- the inside of the glass doesn't collect dust. The fact of the matter is that I'm busy and don't have time to deal with this. I don't have time to post these messages either, but It's pure frustration with the way things were handled that motivates me to share my bad experience online. You can keep the $60 you offered to refund me. You earn my positive review by good service and reacting appropriately when you make a mistake. Neither has happened. read more

In February 2015 I consulted with their so called "Technical support Staff" via LiveChat which SSD I have to buy for my Macbook Air (I even sent him picture of my old SSD) and they sent me a link to order an SSD wich I ordered same day (paid $30-delivery fee+$30 for customs brokerage fee for inbound shipments to Canada). Long story short I got a wrong SSD which doesn't work with my computer. Get in touch with Customer Service via LiveChat and all I got from them is "We are very sorry, but you ordered wrong SSD". I own a small business and was considering ordering more I-pads from this company for my technicians as we like to be "green" and not use so much paper and use these as field tools. After ordering my I-pad 2 it only took 6 months before my backlight started to go out. I contacted OWC to tell them I would need an immediate replacement and they said the best they could do was two weeks. TWO WEEKS!? This was not the sense of urgency I was looking for when I thought they warrantied this item. I ended up going to the apple store where they do take care of you right on the spot and I was back up and running in no time! So, now I'm out my money for the crap I purchased from OWC with no type of reimbursement and I will now no longer be recommending them to my other colleagues or sub contractors out here in Las Vegas. read more

Other World Computing (aka macsales.com) does a great job of making buying mac upgrade components easy and at a good price. They'd get 4, maybe even 5 stars if that's where it ended. But they barely get 2 stars because their customer service blows chunks! I ordered a RAM and SSD upgrade for my mid2012 Mac Pro Tower, installed them and my old Mac was running on par w/ the new Mac trashcan I have at work... in a word, it was SCREAMING fast! Fast forward a couple of months later and the SSD failed. Losing important work data is on me, since I didn't have a great backup regimen at the time (I had one before the SSD and I do now). But not getting a complete replacement for the failed SSD is on OWC. Instead, they REPAIRED something despite my many emails (see below, that's the 3rd email of many which was just ignored) insisting on a COMPLETE REPLACEMENT. There's no guarantee that what failed before won't fail again on a REPAIRED card. For such a critical component, why not just replace it?!?! Anyway, buyer beware. I bought a battery for my macbook pro and it wouldn't even last 2 hours. OWC called it working the way it is supposed to. they are passing low quality products and charging premium prices. also, after I sent back the defective battery, i forgot to put back 2 tiny screwdrivers. and for this, they charged me $24.85. anyone can buy these screwdrivers as a set on eBay for $1. this place is ripping customers off. their breakdown of the cost was $10 for screwdrivers and 15% restocking fee. any good company will not charge you for restocking fee if the item is defective. this is not a good company. never buy from them again. BEWARE CUSTOMERS!!! I was contacted by the manager after I had written my review and he wanted to assure me that the way their office handled my return was not correct. the manager gave me a full refund and even offered me a discount on a new battery. he told me that the new battery will last at least 5 hours and not the less than 2 hour battery i had received. it was great that he did follow up. By Monday I had still not received confirmation that my order had been processed or shipped, so I checked in with their customer service "chat", who told me that my order, "...should ship today. "Hurrah!" I thought to myself, excited that I'd have my laptop by the next day. But it was not to be my friends... A few hours later I check my email. Hmm, still no shipping confirmation email. So, I check in with customer service again. This time (after waiting for what seemed like an eternity) the customer service agent finally admitted that they didn't actually have the Macbook pro I ordered in stock, and that the order was sitting in limbo indefinitely. I asked "what would happen if I hadn't called you to look into this?" and I was told, "...(they) would ship it when available." I said, "Ok, I've been super inconvenienced by the fact that you sold me something you don't have in stock, but why not just send me the next most expensive macbook pro 15"". But, alas, the customer service agent I spoke with did not have the kind of executive power required to correct this mess. Instead I could wait 48 hours to receive an email from customer service spelling out my options. After waiting this long to find out they didn't even have the product they sold me, I decided not to wait for that email and to cancel the order. How long does this company expect customers to wait patiently for products that are never going to arrive? How long should a company be allowed to retain a hold on your bank account if they don't actually have the item they sold you in stock? If they had just shipped me (overnight) the next best macbook pro I wouldn't have re-activated my long-neglected yelp account just to warn others of this deceptive practice. I use all the big sites, Newegg, Monoprice, Crucial, but I always come back to OWC for my Apple specific needs. iPods, iPhones, PowerMacs or notebooks, OWC always has a solution that meets or exceeds Apple's original offering. Many times, I will custom configure a new Mac with the intent to replace a specific component with a better one from OWC. Their DIY repairs and upgrades are great, with simple to understand instructions that leave no questions unanswered. I've never had to exchange or return an OWC product, but they always have me coming back for more. The best aftermarket source for Apple products, bar none. read more

My experience with OWC has been disappointing to say the least. I specifically chose a laptop with an optical drive because my elderly mother wanted that. Before purchasing I asked the customer service rep if the drive was guaranteed to work, she assured me that the entire laptop would be tested before being sent out. The computer arrives and the optical drive does not work. I send back the computer and they replace it, and ship the laptop back without sending me a notification or email. The computer arrives and sits outside the house in the rain. The only reason we knew it arrived was from the security camera footage. Luckily a trusted neighbor went to fetch the package and kept it safe until we returned. I called OWC about this and they assured me it was a one-off and would make note of it. The computer works fine for a bit then starts beeping and crashing. I call OWC and am told the RAM is busted and needs to be replaced. How is that possible on a computer that was tested? We get the RAM replaced and again, after 2 weeks the laptop keeps restarting, crashing, and beeping. We send it back to OWC. Because I no longer trusted the company to handle this issue in a logical manner, I called regularly for updates.... luckily! Because they were about to send the computer back claiming they found no issues- without even emailing me or informing me! Luckily, I had taken screenshots and videos of the computer crashing so I sent those as proof and insisted they check more thoroughly. In the end, they replaced the RAM as a courtesy and again ship the computer back without sending a notification or email! So this is a recurring issue and despite my first complaint about this, nothing has been done to rectify this major issue with their system/website. The amount of time, hassle, and energy this purchase has cost me is unacceptable. I doubt I'd ever do business with OWC again. read more

The only reason this review does not garner 5 stars is this; there are no email addresses on the OWC website, only telephone numbers. Emails provide a hard record of the communications. I responded twice and this was my response to his pm today, which had reiterated his claim of not having received a reply: "I replied to your email at 3:50 pm ET on 4/24/19, to the address dmckinney@macsales.com. Having received no response after 5 days, I followed up at 7:33 am ET on 4/29/19 to the same email address, still receiving no reply." I needed a new hard drive for my old mac and found one on their site. After receiving it I realized it wasn't really a good one for my computer. I ended up procrastinating about sending it back until it was after 30 days, (the return window). So I called them and asked if I could get a different one. When I spoke with Dyllon McKinney the manager and explained what happened and that I just wanted an exchange he was happy to help. I purchased four 4GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC from Other World Computing last week, thinking that it would be a good idea to max out the amount of system RAM in my Mac Pro. This is my work computer and it is beginning to slow down with the new 64-bit applications I have installed. End result? My power light on my computer started blinking. That means "not enough RAM to boot the computer." In English, that means the new RAM is not getting along with the old RAM. Other World Computing told me that they did not sell me bad chips and proved it by having me boot with just their RAM in the system. Booted fine. I spoke with Jim and he was very helpful. He told me that workstation-class computers need to have matched sets. So I spent a ton of money on RAM that left slots open to no purpose. Happily, OWC will take my old RAM back and give me a credit. I am returning theirs and have ordered the proverbial "matched set." Good job explaining, OWC. I recommend them. read more

Bought a "genuine" MagSafe 2 apple charger, first one melted the white plastic case it was in then stopped working. RMA'd that one the replacement one gets very hot, has burned my laptop's power socket and it flashes from green to orange frequently. Requested a refund but they refused. Will tear this one open to document that it's counterfeit. read more

I may be a bog Internet nerd (my best friend calls me Lauren Dot Com) but when it comes to making my computer GOOOOOOOO, I tend to get flummoxed. So, as a HEY I JUST GOT A BIG TAX RETURN gift to myself, I got a nice big iPod. EXCITING. But I have a very old Mac Powerbook. I was telling a friend of mine about it, and the fact that I needed to get an external hard drive... and he suggested that I look at this site for something else I needed (a card with 2 USB2 ports for my poor slow computer) to help speed things up. Let me tell you. I ordered the card on Monday night, Had a shipping receipt in my inbox on Tuesday morning, and the card on Wednesday. I'm so glad that my friend clued me into this shop. I'll probably need help knowing what to actually ORDER, but they were so quick in shipping, that I'll not hesitate to order again. The prices were also pretty great, and the shipping costs were also totally reasonable and not overstated like a lot of shops out there (and having done a lot of shipping and handling, I know what they should be.) Excellent customer service experience! Accidentally ordered the wrong item, so immediately ordered the correct item. Due to a very busy schedule I missed the return date for the wrong item. I was worried they would not accept the return as I missed the cut-off date but after a brief phone call they had no problem accepting the return, and refunded my money very quickly directly into the account it was taken from. I have about a dozen of these drives but today I'm switching to a new brand. I just had a 3TB Mercury Elite Pro fail. (This is the second drive I've had problems with) It's out of warranty so OWC refuses to replace it. In any case, I'd suggest shopping around before purchasing any OWC hard drives. read more

I ordered both a Apple Genuine 45W MagSafe 2 and 60W MagSafe 2 for our MacBook Air/Macbook Pro. Both where Fakes! When I contact OWC to request to return the fraudulent products the are requiring me to pay to ship them back. I've be a devoted customer for over a decade but no longer. Customer support didn't even deny they were selling fake products and even told me they buy them in bulk and repackage them. Shady. read more

So far I'm a fan of this place and the products they sell. I haven't needed to return anything like some of the other reviews, so my opinion might change if I need to. Their prices are pretty good (not the best, but close). Everything I've gotten from them has worked as advertised, even on some of my more temperamental Apple products. Of the three items I've purchased from OWC. One was Dead on Arrival (Mercury Elite Pro Dual) and another failed within 4 weeks (USB Drive Dock). Not exactly a great track record, but par for the course for a company that is basically a front for Chinese manufacturers and bootleg Apple accessories. Protip; don't buy lightning cables or 85W chargers from OWC. read more

I have worked in the customer service industry as well as internet marketing for quite some time, so I am no stranger to best practices when it comes to keeping customers happy online. I've never in my life experienced such appalling customer service in my life. If I could give negative stars I would. We have spent THOUSANDS of dollars with OWC and would have continued to purchase with them if they had their customers best interest in mind but over $300 they have lost our business. We were sold a defective drive and immediately followed up to let them know it wasn't working, they then did some troubleshooting and it still didn't work so we started the processing of replacing that drive with a new 8TB Mercury Elite Pro. The lemon was shipped back and after they said "The SATA port on the hard drive has been ripped off of the board and is unrepairable." Implying that we had tampered with the drive. Not only is this completely false but the accusation is offensive! They are now refusing to issue a refund! It's deplorable that they have the unmitigated gall to not only accuse us of tampering with the drive but then to also not make any effort to rectify the situation after how much we've spent with this company. Over $300 they are losing a valuable customer and I will be sure to make sure everyone knows about how Other World Computing runs their business. They are scam artists and thieves! It's actually unfathomable that in this day and age anyone would risk the reputation of their company over a simple fix but then again based on all of these other 1 star reviews plastered all over the internet it's clear that they don't care about their customers. I'll at least do my part to warn other potential victims that this company doesn't have any values or standards. I would be embarrassed to say I work for a company like this. read more

I was having trouble getting an old Apple Cinema 23 monitor to work with our new M1 Mac mini. I called Tech Support to see if they could help. The tech I spoke with listened to my somewhere out-there question (about using a very old Cinema 23 DVI display). He asked a couple of questions and explained how to setup two monitors - one, the old Cinema 23, and our TVLogic grading monitor. He told me what adapters to use. Turned out, OWC didn't sell either! How often does a company help you out when you don't buy anything. (I have bought a bit over the years). Well, I just setup the Mac mini and the two monitors work perfectly! This is OUTSTANDING customer service! read more

This is a followup on my original review. I purchased three Mac laptops from OWC last year. The 2017 Macbook Pro I purchased for myself was described as in EXCELLENT condition. I had it for just one year and the screen started malfunctioning consistently. I spoke with Applecare and they asked me to have the problem documented. I took it to MacEdge, a certified Apple repair dealer. They discovered that not only was the serial number different on the case as the logic board , but that the computer was NOT an Apple product as most parts were third party knock offs. After many emails OWC agreed to look at the computer. They danced around all of the issues, including CLAIMING that they could not duplicate the screen issue, but would fix the problem they could not find!, if I paid an additional $490. I simply wanted my money back, as I was deceived by OWC. I had spent over $3000.00 with the company and had to purchase a new computer for an additional $1000.00, which I got new from Apple. This is apparently how they treat repeat customers! Their marketing practice is profoundly deceptive! Their customer service is disgusting. read more
