I just deleted an earlier review of OWC. I didn't think it'd be fair to leave a 1 star review up as I have now given them 5 stars. The previous review dealt with what I thought was false advertising regarding free shipping. As it turns out, Nick C left a comment on Yelp suggesting that I work with them in resolving the issue. At the same time I received an email from Becky D suggesting the same and to get in touch with her. She became unavailable so Nick contacted me by phone and we had a very good conversation about the problem. The problem stemmed from the website not being brought up to date with the free shipping choice in the drop down during check out; it's now fixed. Shortly after speaking to Nick, I received another phone call from Ellyse T as a follow up. Thanks folks! You are still the awesome company that I always had good luck with in the past! Now I'll bore you with my purchase! I was worried that my wife's late 2004 iBook could go bye-bye anytime soon. OWC had some amazing buys on 17 inch iMacs for less than $140 so I decided to buy one. It was listed as in good condition. I don't know what criteria they use to grade it but I would have given it a Very Good condition. I could only find one small scratch on the top of the unit. BTW, the packaging of the unit, for shipping, was almost identical to Apple's, very nice! The only problem I encountered after booting up was a problem connecting to certain web sites. They would load but it would take a few minutes for some. Others would connect immediately. DNS problem? I never did find out because I upgraded the machine to Snow Leopard from the installed Tiger and that fixed the problem (swapped RAM to 2GB though the machine cruised just fine with 1GB). To summarize, OWC continues to be my place to shop for Mac related gear, their customer service is nonpareil IMHO! Keep up the great work gang! read more

Stay far, far, away. They are the worst when it comes to their return policies. They cost me thousands of $$$ when they refused to diagnose a an SSD drive that still had a year+ left under warranty. However, the clerk kept arguing with me that the heatsink was part of the drive and therefore, the warranty was voided. She also lectured me about a missing screw, never addressing whether the actual drive itself was defective. read more

Purchased a thunderbolt three dock. Payed $319 for it, identified an issues with flickering screens when I purchased it. Called them within the warranty period for the dock, they refused to send one while checking out the old one for defects even when I offered to pay for the new one until they received the old model. I was contacted by Dyllon in their Customer Service department who was very helpful. He wanted to get this resolved and I appreciate his help. After talking back and forth and reassuring me my data would be safe, we decided I would send them the drive to see if they could recover my files. Since they have better tools than I have, it was worth it. Dyllon made a special point to keep track of my drive to ensure nothing happened to it accidentally which, again, was much appreciated. They found that the drive itself was fine - the problem was with the hardware in the case. They successfully recovered everything for me onto a different drive. I realize that with any product, some can be bad, and considering my other OWC drives have never given me trouble this is probably one of those cases. Still, I can't give a 5 star rating because of the ordeal. I still believe the problem was there when the drive was under warranty so I shouldn't have had to buy a new drive to replace it. They did do the file recovery for free, but again since I'm sure the problem existed under warranty I believe they SHOULD have done it for free. (And since the drive was fine and the data was completely intact, there should be no charge for that anyway.) But in the end I got my files back and that was my biggest concern. OWC did do a good job to remedy the situation. I am grateful for that even though I think they could've gone just a little bit further. I have not written them off for future purchases. I can't recommend this company enough! After my 2013 MBP Retina was stolen during a burglary, I found myself on OWC's website while looking for options to revive the 2009 MBP we had sitting around in our apartment. For context, the 2009 MBP was so slow that there was usually a 30 second delay between clicking something and it actually registering it. Needing a computer immediately for school, I ordered the 240GB SSD kit (complete with all the necessary screwdrivers and HDD casing for the old drive) and the 8GB DDR RAM kit. Using the installation videos on OWC's website, installing the new equipment - safely! - was a breeze. My 2009 MBP now runs *faster* than my 2013 MBP Retina - a true transformation. My iMac suffered a hard drive problem which required it to be replaced. I watched the video (excellent) and bought the upgrade kit and a new hard drive. The package )also excellent) arrived promptly and I set to work. Everything went well. Hard drive installed, screen replaced, computer working. Great. Four days later I came in to find the screen had fallen out of the iMac onto my desk. Two areas of pulverised glass, top and bottom, and a couple of cracks on the glass. Somehow the cables had detached without damage to their connectors. I swept up the glass, taped over the crumbled areas with gaffe tape, and reinstalled the screen. This time I ran gaffa tape along the edges. Not too pretty, but it will certainly hold. The screen works, despite one vertical line near the left edge. One crack is visible new the top left corner, but the other re screened by the mask. If you have to do a screen removal, forget the thin double sided adhesive tape. Go gaffa. It will hold. read more

I've had three negative experiences with OWC's products. Two years ago I purchased an OWC Aura Pro SSD chip for my MacBookPro. The chip overheated and melted inside of my computer. When I returned home from overseas they promptly replaced the chip no questions asked. I did not complain, although I the suspect residue all over the inside of my computer caused lasting damage to my $3000 MacBookPro 15" (2013), which is why their SSD drive is now in a USB enclosure on the shelf. I also purchased a battery replacement for my MacBookPro 15" (2008). After a few months the battery swelled, failed and bent the surface of my laptop around the trackpad. I was 7000 miles away on the other side of the planet at the time so I didn't bother asking for a replacement. Again, I didn't complain, even though my laptop now crashes daily, err, or maybe that's the other 2.5" OWC SSD upgrade? This year I purchased a OWC 2.5" SSD drive for my father's iMac and PAID for installation since I was 7000 miles away from home again. The SSD drive they installed was faulty. When I requested a warranty repair, OWC demanded I pay $80 to cover the cost labor to swap out the part under warranty. Absurd. They broke my father's computer and now they want me to pay them to fix it; I took the computer to the AppleStore and they verified that the iMac hardware was not at fault. I even offered to replace the drive myself, but that was just another complication. I've been a OWC customer for almost 20 years. I thought they stood behind their products and services which is why I used them exclusively while I was working in overseas in places like Kosovo, Palestinian West Bank, Afghanistan, Iraq and Darfur. Good thing my laptops didn't fail when I was providing direct support to the US military. Burned three, maybe, four times now. FYI... Beware OWC MacSales Customers, I've been a customer of OWC macsales for several years and I've never had an experience so disappointing in the whole internet. I have turned numerous family, friends and clients on to them for their needs. No more! On the 14th of September I bought an 480 gb Aura SSD with the upgrade KIT (includes tools & transfer enclosure). Approximately one week after being installed the Aura stopped working. I contacted the support via chat and they arranged a replacement for the disk. I lost a lot of work that I had no backup because I work a lot of time abroad. While I was waiting for the replacement I reinstalled the original Apple SSD with no issues. I must inform that I've had zero problems from the beginning with the original SSD that came with the Macbook Pro. After installing the replacement Aura it worked with no issues for no more than a week. It stopped working and couldn't be found by disk utility once again. And once again lost work, time and trust on OWC! Today I've contacted OWC support via chat. It's unbelievable!!!!! I've asked for a refund and they were insisting on replacing the item. I'm just interested on a refund since two SSD failures are more than enough for me. and you know what? the refund period would be within the first 30 days after purchase. great news!!!! I had to remind the support that those 30 days were gone between support, testing sending the disk, waiting for the replacement, the opportunity to install it and test it properly because you don't expect this kind to things to happen even once with the so called Other World Computing - "Quality" Solutions. "Expert" Support. Since 1988. Unfortunately it happened twice and OWC is willing to give me another chance. Considering I accept the replacement for how long will this keep going? The support told me 3 years from the date of purchase. Cool! After two months I've have two disk failures. If the average maintains by the end of the warranty I've had 36 480gb Auras from OWC, I have spent approximately more 250$ on shipping expenses for replacement, I have lost countless hours replacing SSDs on my mac, I have lost countless hours on something that should be straightforward. Life is simple with OWC products! And after the 3 years warranty OWC will finally solve your problem because they don´t have to deal with you anymore. What's the probability of happening two times? if happened twice in two months quite probably will happen again. and I'm losing time and money with these "trusted" companies. They claim to test the like-new computers before selling, but only plugged mine in (did not test the ports, etc.) for an hour. I have 2 of 4 Thunderbolt ports bad, causing restarts, but even though I sent the new computer in to fix or replace it, they returned it, saying there was nothing wrong, until I confronted them about not testing it (fraudulent advertising). I bought a near-new MBpro16 that is unreliable, but because they appear to sell grey-market goods, there is no Apple warranty. Their offer to me is 50% of what I paid as a trade-in, but the computer has always had the problem since they sold it to me. Beware of the false advertising and apparently factory seconds or fakes being sold as tested and good. I didn't realize there was Yelp for OWC, and now I am a believer. I just now saw 2 Yelp posts that found out, like me that they may be guilty of fraudulent activities. I have saved the emails: guilty guilty on at least 2 counts. read more

I was an established customer with Other World Commuting and had purchased several products that were reasonably priced and functioned well. I liked the way the firm did business. Then, in 2016, I bought a refurbished Mac computer from them. It did not work. In trying to get it to work, I took it to a Mac repair outfit. By the time the repairman had determined that the computer hardware was defective, the 15 day return period for a full refund was up. It had gone over by a week. I called OWC customer service and asked for a full refund on the defective computer, on the grounds that the computer was obviously a dud. The rep said I could send the computer back and they would repair it, or that I could get a refund with a 15% restocking charge (about $200) taken out of the refund. I didn't want to risk getting another dud from this company, and besides I needed a computer right away for my work. I told them the 15% restocking charge was unfair, given that the computer didn't work and that the 15 day window had been taken up by my having a repair outfit look at the computer (and I had to pay the repair people to do this). I asked OWC to make an exception to their 15 day rule. They adamantly refused. So I sent the dud computer back and ended up having to lose $200 to get a refund. The customer service experience was very unpleasant in that their response was unfair and inflexible. OWC shows little loyalty to return customers, and due to the 15 day rule, it is able to get out of standing fully behind the products it sells, especially defective ones. I will no longer purchase items from OWC (or Mac Sales). They lost a customer. I intend to warn other potential customers. Buyers beware! Note: the fifteen day window for full refund is actually less than fifteen days as it is dated from the issuing of the invoice, and it takes a couple of days to get the item by mail. read more

4 x 2 GB sticks failed on my Mac Pro and with no effort OWC looked up my order from my caller ID. It was placed on 11/12/2008. I told your staff diagnostics such as REMBER and the system profiler said these slots were empty. After swapping the boards it was determined the memory was bad (even after the "eraser test") so today I installed the replacement memory and WOW! Back to 10GB now I can open more than one Adobe App :) read more

Short version: Not a company interested in honoring their "guarantees", poor product, but good technical support. Longer version: I ordered a 2TB SSD drive upgrade kit for my late 2009 iMac. The video instructions on the website were extremely clear and helpful and I had no trouble removing the original hard drive and replacing with the SSD. However, the drive simply did not work, and I could not even boot to a different drive with the SSD installed. To be completely fair, technical support truly made a good faith effort to help me troubleshoot the problem. I had two RMA's, for a total of 3 SSD drives that, for whatever reason, did not work with my computer. Again, technical support did their best to help with this problem, but ultimately no OWC SSD drive worked for me. I decided to purchase a Samsung SSD drive and, using the kit, install the Samsung SSD to see if it would work when the OWC SSD did not. The Samsung worked flawlessly using the Adaptadrive and thermal sensor products supplied with the kit. It was at this point that I told customer service of the situation, and that I would happily return their drive (and the rest of the kit if needed) and just ask that I be charged for the Adaptadrive and thermal sensor that I am using. Customer service then replied that there would be a 15% restocking fee for the return of a drive that never once worked for me. 15% on a $739 kit is $110.85, an exorbitant sum to cover their shipping and restocking fees. I pointed out to them that they also had a 100% satisfaction guarantee on their SSD (See here: https://eshop.macsales.com/service/returnpolicy#s22) and that yes, I was actually dissatisfied with three SSD's in a row that did not work in my computer. Their reply was to simply quote the 15% restocking fee policy back to me. I suppose there is some clever legal parsing as to why their guarantee does not apply to me, in which case their money spent on legal services was well spent. At this point, whatever "restocking fee" is my penalty not to have researched this company more thoroughly on Yelp before making a large purchase. From OWC's viewpoint, the priority is that the customer service flowchart was followed and not that a customer that makes large purchases of their computer products for his business was alienated. 8/19/2016: Dyllon: I received an email confirming that the drive has been delivered back to OWC. I purchased a 5.1 Mac Pro I purchased a 5.1 Mac Pro, and it has had issues from the time I received it. It contiually drops the largest internal drive upon start up and requires you to take the side off, pull the drive out and restart. I sent the machine in to be repaired at a cost and was sent the machine promptly back with the same problem...... I recently had another issue with my machine where I could not do a clean reinstall of mojave because I don't have a metal support graphics card (I do). The Solution again was to send the machine back to them and see if they can fix it with no reassurance that they can fix the problem and will wave the fees for repair, as this is the second time I have been through this. They did however throughout this manage to sell me a new solid state drive (which has failed 3 times) and a new hard drive enclosure for the drive that keeps dropping out. I have had very good experience with their tech support, however; I would stay far away from their machines and hard drives. This has been a disaster from start to finish. Can't give 5 stars as the initial customer service fell way short of what it should have been. FIRST UPDATE: I'm adding a star to my review after being contacted by OWC's customer service manager. They made good on their rebate offer and I applaud them for that, but I think they should have gotten it right the first time. I'm still waiting for the rebate check. If no more hiccups, I'll reassess my rating again. ORIGINAL POST: Long time customer of OWC and generally been pleased with their products/service, but after this last purchase and encounter w/ customer service, no more. Purchased used memory for my Mac Pro. On the order page there was a prominent notice saying I could trade in my existing memory. No mention of any exclusions, etc. I get the memory installed and go to the trade in page. It doesn't show any qualifying purchase to allow the trade in. So I contact CS, who initially tell me since I purchased used memory no trade in is allowed. When I point out that it didn't say that on the order page notice, CSR says she'll set up the trade in for me and to expect an email w/ instructions. When I get the email, it says that my memory is third party and does not qualify for trade in. This is the original memory that came with the Mac Pro when it was shipped directly from Apple, but it's branded hynix, which is an OEM supplier for Apple memory. I have no problem with a company that makes offers subject to certain exclusions. However, I do have a problem with a company that doesn't adequately divulge the exclusions upfront. Bought a brand new Mac and it was DOA. I was informed (a day after already being given an RMA #) that I would have to pay a restocking fee of 15% (that's about $250). When I called to ask about it, they suggested I take it to the Apple store, which of course does not work. The Apple store said they can't replace the computer (which was brand new in box and allegedly under warranty) because it was not bought at Apple. Buyer beware, you absolutely cannot return a defective product to OWC/Macsales, there is a restocking fee and you cannot get around it. Furthermore, after investigating the issue, I found that it is a widely known bug with certain Mac Pros, and OWC/Macsales are knowingly selling these bricks to people and not issuing proper refunds. ...Update: They have blocked my accurate and honest review that I posted on their website. Watch out buying chargers from them, they claim they are genuine chargers but the one they sent me is clearly a fake. Fake apple chargers are known to get extremely hot and can even catch fire. Fakes can also fry your laptop. Its a real shame that they sell this type of product because now it ruins the credibility of anything else they sell, if it was clearly label that its a fake i wouldn't as upset but to charge this much for a fake and then to claim it's authentic is VERY SHADY. read more

Their products are excellent, and well-priced. But best of all, their service is wonderful! I just had a problem installing a PCI card and for a while it looked like maybe the Logic board on my computer was dying. All 3 staff members I spoke to at OWC (Doug, Joe and finally John) were extremely patient with me and with expert skill helped me fix the problem. It was about 3 hours of work but they were really kind, patient, and again, expertly knowledgeable. This company rocks. Great products backed up with service! I had an OWC portable HD and a Lacie brand that both failed. Couldn't even speak to someone at Lacie-had to submit a ticket online etc. After 2 weeks the answer was they don't repair anything out of warranty, period. They referred me to sources who would charged more then the drive cost. OWC? quick phone call to a person, minutes later an RMA form and 4 days later I had it back, fixed. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY. I ordering from them for years, and I work at a large studio that also orders from them. I will advocate not order anything form this company ever again. I ordered a computer, as my computer died, and I really needed it ASAP. I ordered next day. The confirmation said next business day, which I had not noticed. My bad. I called FEDEX to change to my work address at the Studio. They said the sender had to call them. I called OWC, and they contacted FED EX, but refused to change the address since I paid through Amazon pay. They NEVER said that they would order delivery restrictions if you opted one of the payment options they offered. SO!! I ask to speak to a Manager, after talking to service reps in customer service, shipping, and the Celeste in Sales. Celeste told me that I could go to the owner of the company and get the same answer. I said okay, can I have his info. Next, I was finally allowed to speak to a Manager John L. that told me he answers to no one, none is above him, and I could not get the contact information to anyone that is above him. Bottom line, I can't even send a PA to pick up the package. I have to lose yet more money to leave work and pick it up. This company is costing me money for a policy they did not clarify. If anyone would like to join me in a class action lawsuit against this company, please contact me. The one time I received a kinked/cracked power cord for my MacBook Pro, I did the return request entirely through the website/email and was sent a new cord promptly. The facts.. received the hard drive and kit. After 4 weeks of intermittent issues stemming from a faulty hard drive it was returned as it has completely failed. OWC only wanting to give a Partial Refund on the matter hence the cruel customer service resolution. I returned the hard drive per RMA. True it was not returned with all the components of the 'kit.' The computer repair shop only provided me with the hard drive and no other components. All of this is understood, but situations and circumstances vary so I addressed this directly with customer service supervisor Danielle. No consideration given that this cost me $120 to diagnose the faulty hard drive, loss of time (iMac in shop on 3 occasions over 12 days), and total loss of Data! ALL that I seek was a full refund on this item and they will not consider it and it must now go through a chargeback process. Product quality and return policy stink I purchased a Solid State Drive and it failed on the 43rd day from purchase, not from installation date. By the time we chased down the problem, after 3 days with Apple tech support and Genius Bar visits, a total of 48 days from purchase had elapsed. MacSales' return policy is 30-days, but they'd extend it to 45-days, because they're nice guys, but won't extend it to 48-days. This essentially means that 1.) the products are low quality, and 2.) the products are guaranteed for 45-days, after that, you pay a restocking fee. For just a few bucks, MacSales could have had a happy, understanding customer, but instead, I will tell you, go buy a Samsung SSD from Best Buy, as it's the same or, in my case, a lower price for better specs, and it's a major brand, instead of the private label "OWC' brand with only a 45-day warranty. read more

Such a horrible experience with this company. My family bought a New (late 2016) Macbook Pro 15". Spent over $3000. We opened it and noticed the screen was damaged. Did the right think and called Other World Computing to let them know and that is where the run around starts. First they were very helpful stating they would take care of us. Then they said they would refund our money because they didn't have anymore in stock. The next thing, they said the refund would be minus $980 for the cost of the screen. Wait, what? It was damaged in shipping. They basically told me "they determined" it wasn't damaged in shipping. WTF? They did inspect the device when they received it from apple, they didn't open it when it got to my house. How would they make that determination? They couldn't. On top of that, I can't even take it to apple because OWC is the customer on record and not me, and since apple knows they are a (non authorized) re-seller they won't honor the warranty if we bring it in. OWC would need to bring it in. So OWC wanted to go get the laptop fixed, then resell it for what, $200 off the original retail?! Still making a $800 profit off my family since they're trying to charge us $980 for a screen? Anyway, I spoke with someone named John who is in Tech support. He was not helpful at all and basically blamed us for the damage. Sam (Samantha) who was above John, was just as rude and unhelpful as John if not more. Both managers had kind of a "I don't really care what you say, we're not honoring a full warranty." Now, to Apple's credit, they were amazing as Apple usually is. They called OWC on my behalf and got the same responses from Sam, that basically "We were OWC's customer, and not Apples and if they don't want to refund they don't have to and wont!" Though I thought it too good to be true, at last! The Bose quietcontrol 30 only $208. A great deal right? Not so much so when in fact I was sent the Bose quietcontrol 20. A refurbished model, that was available from the same seller for $99. Though I was contacted by a MacSales representative who offered me a refund for the "mix up", I really did not want a refund but to actually have sent to me the item that I had initially ordered. This would not be possible. Why? The advertised item, which was said to have been in stock when I called MacSales before making my purchase, was now on back order for 2 1/2 weeks! The headset I ordered, I use in my work and expected to have it in a timely manner. I have had good experienced in the past with OWC, which is why I was a bit shocked at the experience of my last purchase - an external CD/DVD drive. I rarely use this medium, but my old LaCie drive died and they don't sell this product anymore. Hence, I purchased OWC's least expensive standalone. First off, unless you purchase an external PSU (not supplied), this unit requires eating up TWO USB ports from your computer - I have never seen this topology before, but fortunately I had two available. That's when the trouble started: The disc tray did not open fully and had to be pulled out manually (bad sign) - Then, the tray would not fully close as it should (I put this down to shabby metalwork). Once the tray was manually pushed closed, the drive would not recognize/play any disc. At that point, I realized that this was not going to work for me and would need to be returned for a refund. The OWC rep was excellent, however imagine my surprise to find out that I was on the hook for the RMA shipping charges... $11 for a $40-odd dollar drive. I am now seriously considering taking my peripheral business elsewhere based on this penny-pinching experience (RMA's for faulty merchandise should not be borne by the unfortunate customer). In the end, I bought an Apple SuperDrive from Amazon for $79 +tax and it worked straight out of the box on a single USB port - I should have gone that route in the first place. At this point, as for my experience with OWC, it looks like I paid $11 for a whole lot of nothing. The two star review reflects the courteous and professional contact I had with the OWC rep on the phone - the rest of the experience was worthy of one star at best and as I mentioned, this was my first bad experience (based on return policy) with OWC. read more

I have a late 2008 Macbook aluminum case. Came with 2G memory. Been getting slow and recently I installed Mountain Lion. All installed fine but now the demand on memory and swapping went over the hill. Thanks to OWC I easily found 8G of memory and easily installed it. LIKE A NEW COMPUTER. I knew it was a memory problem but I never dreamed what such a $55 memory change could do. Thanks OWC for the easy access to the right memory and the installation videos. Worked perfectly!!! OWC just upgraded my 5-year old iMac with a 3TB hard drive and 8GB of memory from the original 1TB and 4GB. They successfully transferred all my files from the old hard drive to the new. I had to reauthorise Office, but that was the only mild inconvenience. After making sure everything worked OK I upgraded my OS to Mavericks. OWC took less than two business days to receive and get my iMac back to me. Working with Ben on the chat and Ed in the sales office was a pleasant experience. Ben answered all my questions promptly and professionally. He did not oversell, but led me to appropriate decisions. My iMac is unbelievable. So much faster and responsive. I just received new RAM from OWC to double the memory for my early 2008 I-mac. I'd say (thanks to OWC selling me the correct RAM and thanks to their installation instructions) the installation took less than 5 minutes. Very simple, and my computer started right up and everything works perfectly and twice as fast. read more

STAY AWAY! I ordered a bundle which included an enclosure, HDD and software suite from their site for my MacBook Pro. It seemed like a decent bundle. WRONG. They failed to ship the tools with the bundle, and the packaging was clearly packaged in a hurry without any regard about the product, not even an invoice included. I bet it will be dead the moment I put it in my computer. Oh and did I mention that they took their sweet time of half a week to even process my order? OWC doesn't seem to give a crap about their products and determined to scam people, so I will not use them again. Do not recommend these guys. I ended up buying all my things from Crucial. I at least got everything this time. Plus it came in a sturdy packaging :D I have pictures if anyone wants to know more. read more
