I should have known this was too good to be true. Bought an SSD memory for my Macbook Air 2010, no only it did not work but it broke my machine completely. After weeks of trying and contacting tech support, the only help I got was links to the videos they have on their website. Thanks "tech support". After much frustration, I finally got an IT Expert to work on this for me. He tried several times to "clone" to the new SSD without avail. Can't actually give zero stars.... UGH. Steer clear of these guys. A few years ago they had solid products and great customer service. Something there has changed dramatically- I've had several drive failures now and the warranty service was garbage. They sent the drive back saying it tested fine, and it was clearly broken. They didn't even look at the thing! OWC did that twice before replacing the enclosure's power board, and now the something in the drive rattles when it moves. They sold me a DVD drive for my computer that did not properly mount in my computer. The screws they included for the drive TOTALLY did not fit my computer. When I took off the screws of my dead drive and put it on their drive, the DVD tray on the drive would hit the inside of the computer, not clearing the slot in the front of my Mac G5 Tower.Then, when I finagled it so the DVD tray would sort of clear the slot, (by jacking up the back screws) it burned a CD, worked for a while loading software, and then choked on burning a DVD. I'm returning it, and I feel they are TOTALLY UNCOOL for selling a product that doesn't fit. read more

I've been a long time customer of OWC/MacSales and I had always been happy with their products and service. This has changed with my most recent purchase from them, however. I bought a NewerTech 95W NuPower Battery Replacement Kit from them in December and went through the lengthy process of removing and gluing in the new battery. Everything worked well for the first few weeks but then I got a notification that my battery needs to be serviced. Since it had only been 3 months since I replaced it, I reached out to customer support and they told me to recalibrate the battery by discharging and recharging 4 times. I tried this and it still has a warning that I should replace it now. I reached out to customer service again and was told that they would provide a replacement. They asked if I wanted to provide a credit card or send the battery back and wait for the replacement. Since I need my computer for work, I gave them my credit card info. I just received the replacement battery and was surprised that there is no return shipping label. Thinking it was a mistake, I reached out to customer support and asked for the return label. They told me that I'm responsible for shipping it back to them. I don't even know why they want the faulty battery back because it's glued in and you have to pry it out. My original battery looked pretty beat up by the time I got it out of my computer so it seems like a hazard to be shipping it back anyway. But now I have to go through the whole battery replacement process again and pay to ship the faulty battery back. The customer service rep was no help and I asked for an email or number to file a complaint. She told me that wasn't possible. I saw this happened to one other person as well so it's not an anomaly with this battery. I used to stand by this company and their products but, unfortunately, I can't recommend them anymore. UPDATE: I was contacted by OWC/MacSales and they provided a shipping label for the faulty battery and the new battery seems to be charging and discharging properly so I have added a star to my review. read more

I purchased a 60W Magsafe 2 power adaptor. Took to an Apple store where they told me the adaptor was a knock off due to a few factors, but primarily the fact the that the charge indicator light lights up immediately upon connection (instead of with an approximate 1 second delay with chargers purchased directly from Apple). Contacted OWC and had it shipped back. Received an email from OWC stating that they ran tests and discerned it was not a knock off, and asked what I wanted to do. I asked what my options were and a replacement was shipped back to me before I received a response (meaning asking what I wanted to do--I assume receive a replacement or a refund--was a moot question). the replacement exhibits all the same characteristics that lead employees at Apple store to tell me it was a knock off the first time around. If OWC had explained to me why the charger exhibits a delay in the charge indicator light and why it's a bit shorter than the same model charger purchased directly from Apple, or at least waited for my response before sending me a replacement (instead of a refund), I'd have felt better about the transaction. read more

OWC has a large selection of spare computer parts, but I was not able to find the laptop battery replacement I needed for my mid 2012 MacBook. There was some initial confusion at first and I ended up with the wrong battery, but they accepted my return well after the return period due to the fact I had spent all that time trying to install it. I had to call them twice and they gave me the run around that it was now too late and they refused to restock their unopened products. I spent $305.98 to purchase 4GB x2 strips of MAC memories (total of 8GB) in 2010. It was an expensive investment because I trusted their advertising: : "Life Time Warranty", etc. In 2015, I needed to increase my memory capacity. So, I spent $84.99 more to purchase another 4GB x2 strips of MAC memories (total of 8GB). The memories I purchased from 2015 were not compatible with my older memories I purchased from OWC. After took about 50 days and many emails, plus shipping cost on my part, I got the refund of $84.99 from OWC. Some representatives were kind, others were not kind at all. The fact is: they do not test the memories they sell regarding compatibility with the older memories they sold to customers like me. I still do not have the needed memory for my video work until today. I have been very disappointed with this company, which is the same as many greedy and cold hearted corporations in this world. read more

Think twice if you are planning obtain any services from OWC. I bought a OWC USB c dock based on reviews from tech websites. I received the product and everything worked fine except for the "faulty" HDMI port. I opened a RMA and quickly shipped the dock back for a replacement in late Feb 2016. Fast forward to present day, after 7 weeks of waiting, I have yet to receive the replacement. I reached out OWC and their answers have always been "we don't know when the new stock will arrive". To me, that means, even though we designed and made the product but we don't know when we will receive the dock from China. What are they waiting for? They bought the dock from a factory and just put their brand on? How could they possibly not know when the new stock will arrive? Even though OWC offered 2 years of warranty, but its useless if the items they offer is made by order basis. Think twice before buying any OWC products. read more

I installed an OWC replacement battery in my 15" Retina MacBook Pro laptop in August and from the beginning it didn't hold nearly the same charge as the original (new) battery. By November it wasn't holding much of a charge and I had a "Replace Now" warning. I called OWC about a warranty claim and they wanted me to send the battery back before they sent a replacement. This is a model with the battery glued into the laptop and the replacement process is a good three hours. By the time the battery comes out most of the internals of the laptop are on the bench with dozens of tiny screws, many of which are different and need to be carefully kept with whatever little part they were holding in. So not only would I be without a computer for however many weeks it takes to complete the exchange, but all of these little screws and parts would be out of the laptop just waiting to be lost, damaged, or mixed up. After a long argument with multiple "customer service" representatives OWC finally agreed "as a one-time courtesy" to send the replacement without returning the defective one they sold me. As a number of other reviewers have noted, OWC carefully screens the reviews posted to their site. It's almost impossible to find anything other than 5-star reviews. Between all the negative reviews on Yelp and BBB, it's obvious they're throwing out anything negative. They also have no way to remove or edit a review once it's posted. I ended up having to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau to get my original positive review removed. They claim that's going to be fixed. No surprise the updated review I submitted has not been posted (no claim that will be fixed). As if that's not enough, they post reviews on pages for other products, presumably when there aren't enough reviews for the actual product. In the case of this battery, a number of these other-product reviews note how simple the replacement is. This one is not simple. The video instructions they provide are perfect, but this is a long, tedious, and potentially risky process and I'm really unhappy I had to do it twice. Update: OWC customer service insists on telling the story that they don't screen reviews and that they do not have any control over their reviews. This is not true. Their reviews are handled by a 3rd party, BazaarVoice.com, but I confirmed with that company that they do not control the reviews. Furthermore, I received confirmation from the OWC Chief Technologist that they do in fact control the reviews on their site and he was the one who finally removed mine. He promised to educate the customer service reps but that apparently still has not been done. read more

First time I have come across a company that refused to help me. I bought a solid state usb powered drive three years and three months ago. I am three months out of warranty. The USB connection point is malfunctioning, not the drive. It cannot get reliable power. I called for some advice. Told I was three months out of warranty. I said OK, let me send it in and I will pay for a repair. I back up about every few months so I had some data I wanted recovered. Figured the drive was functional other than having to fanagle the cable in place. Tech support manager simply said NO. I am out of warranty so they would not repair it. I said OK I'll take it to a local repair shop. They said that will probably not work as the external drive uses a Blade series 5 drive that will not fit in any other enclosure. And no, they will not sell me a replacement enclosure. So to recap, OWC sells an external drive 1TB solid state of a proprietary design that only they can repair, but if you are beyond the warranty period, they will NOT repair it, even if you offer to pay. Tech support told me to look into Data Savers, which could cost an arm and leg. I said the drive is intact, its the connection that is loose. They don't care. So now I am stuck with a $499 hard drive with no fix, no solutions. Before they hung up, the lady said, "I am sorry you feel that way", after I calmly told her that making a proprietary (hard to fix) product and then not standing by that product (even after warranty) is reprehensible business practice." I will never purchase anything from them again. They simply do not care. For such an expensive drive, I expected more than three years use out of it. read more

OWC is refusing to honor their 3 year warranty on a 4TB Mercury Elite Pro hard drive I purchased directly from them in February 2014. In December 2015, the drive failed. I called OWC, received a RMA number, and was told to ship the hard drive back to them. When they received it, a customer service representative sent me an email saying the drive was purchased from a store in Corvallis OR and that I would need the sales receipt from that store. So I sent them a copy of my PayPal receipt for the hard drive, showing that it was indeed purchased directly from OWC. However, they are still claiming the drive was purchased from this other store in Corvallis (despite my PayPal receipt) and they will not honor their warranty and will not repair or replace my hard drive. They have just lost a long time customer and I will be filing a complaint with the FTC. EDIT: after being contacted by Nick C. (see below), he was able to straighten out the confusion over serial number on my hard drive and I received a replacement drive a few days later. I'm upgrading my rating from 1 star to 3 stars and asking them to review their customer service policies so this problem doesn't happen to others. read more

Over the years I've made purchases of OWC parts for my computers and have always been pleased with their performance/quality. Recently however, I was introduced to how wonderfully they stood behind an issue which involved me having to ship my entire computer to them for further inspection to see if I had caused the issue or if, indeed, it was an usual malfunction of one of their parts. I'm speaking now to the honesty and integrity of this company: They could have easily made this out to be my problem. Instead they stood behind their name and reputation and came through with shining colors. A company that in my book has proven themselves to be completely trustworthy. A 240GB Mercury Extreme Pro purchased directly from OWC has failed twice with each lasting less than 18 months out of the 5 year warranty. Unlike other suppliers... it is a challenge to organise an international express / advance / cross ship warranty replacement from OWC with the correct documentation. OWC will cause unnecessary duties, taxes and fees by NOT completing basic information on their commercial shipping invoices like reason for export: warranty replacement. Despite OWC paying the unnecessary GST on the first replacement they are still incapable of acknowledging their inability to correctly provide a commercial shipping invoice that clearly identifies warranty replacements. No duties, taxes or fees are applicable to warranty replacements if OWC supplies the correct information on their commercial shipping invoices. You also have to pay each time for return shipping of their defective product. Total cost for returning two failures under warranty is over 30% of new product. OWC customer service are very unprofessional with their handling of international shipping issues. I was getting ready to buy a new MacBook Air due to my drive being completely full and I need to do my taxes. Saw the new SSD drives with more than double the memory of my MacBook Air and read how easy it was to install, etc. At half the price of a new computer, I figured, "why not"? I ordered and the web site said to expect it within a few days. A week goes by and I place a call. Ryan B tells me that there was "an unforeseen delay" and apologizes profusely and tells me he is upgrading my shipping and I should expect it by April 4. Then he sends me an email confirming our discussion and the upgraded shipping. Now it is April 7, so I called. New rep feeds me the same line about an "unforeseen delay" and tells me that once they receive the shipment they'll fulfill orders in the order they were placed and she doesn't know if mine will be shipped out of the first shipment they receive or not. Then she tells me that an email went out to that effect---Umm, no, I never received that email. Then she told me the ETA for my drive is 5 business days. I told her about the need to do taxes on time, etc. and she couldn't be bothered. (In fairness, it is not her problem, but it is frustrating to me that a company would sell a product it doesn't even have in stock, and no indicate it.) Finally, she told me to call back on Monday to see if they received any and if mine was going to be sent out. It would be nice to know that the SSD actually exists and works as promised. Right now it is a fictional item that has eluded me on two different expected delivery dates. Customer service seems to be in a position that they can't (or won't) do anything. Ultimately, I suspect if they don't have the item they can't ship them, so it is not customer service reps' fault. However, the company should put full disclosures on its web site and/or ordering page and not have expected delivery dates that they can't possibly fulfill. To me, it's an integrity issue. read more

SSD quality ? SSD for MacBook, 2.5 inch SSD etc are comparatively cheap, so we used it, but unfortunately it seems that some items are defective. I have ordered so far less than 10 items, but unfortunately I had exchange 3 times so far. Personally I have no choice but to doubt the quality of OWC made SSD. In the future we will interact with things that need to be replaced, but we will not purchase them anew. The last deal, as soon as it arrives, SSD as bad. In past experiences it took time to exchange (although the shipping fee is free, but the slow transportation method is used), I was planning to respond with a replacement. Because I was in a hurry, I chose a replacement. After that, if I send by exchange, they will pay the return fee ($ 20) on the OWC side, but if you buy a new one, they can not pay the return fee. No matter how many times we negotiated it did not change. Ms. Rebecca also took charge of responsibility on the way. I asked to talk with Mr. Doug M who had corresponded for a long time. However, "He no longer exists" correspondence. To tell you the details, I will get tariff quite well if I order from Japan (I do not think there is a case of exchange), so if I re-order again the tariff will take double. Even if I told them about that, they can not do anything at all. As for SSD, it is 3 years warranty, 5 year warranty, and says that it can be replaced any number of times during that time. Still waiting on order. I've purchased from OWC multiple times over the years however this lack of negligence in regards to customer service leads me to seek service somewhere else after this issue is fixed. I'm still waiting on my order a week later. I've gotten no update in email from OWC expect the email I received once I purchased the items. OWC seems to have had no problem taking my money, however they seem to have a hard time keep customers informed on set backs. I've contacted customer service twice. The first time I was told it would be delivered in seven days. I've waited a six business days and decided to contact them again after no update. I contact customer service again now I'm being told it will be another three business day wait and thats once the product is in stock it will ship. OWC needs to start being upfront with its customers and honest. I've been more than fair and yet I'm still waiting on a hard drive and ram that after more than a week I've yet to receive. Being told now two different stories by your customer service agents doesn't help the matter at all. Plus I'm still waiting on my order. I raised the concern that I never once received any kind of update on the delay and the customer service agents had no response for why. This is just bad service and bad business. I will be giving this company two more days then I'm cancelling this order I shouldn't have to beg a company that had received more than 700 dollars of money an update on a product I bought. So I know nothing about computer hardware but I was running out of hard drive space on my Macbook Pro and I needed a new battery. I found this place referenced on a few Mac sites, so I decided this was the place to buy my stuff! They probably thought I was some lame-ass customer because I had to alter my order twice, but they were nice and altered my order for me without any hesitation. I received an email letting me know that my request was processed. They shipped my items on a Tuesday and I received them on Saturday! Pretty good timing! They had an instructional video on youtube that explained how to change out a hard drive on a macbook pro, so I followed it after cloning my drive, and I was able to install my hard drive all by myself! THEY DID NOT EVEN SHIP THE PRODUCT WITHIN THAT TIME FRAME, let alone deliver it. When I called them, they said the product was 'backordered' when the website indicated in-stock. They made no effort to overnight ship it, or even give me a discount on my next order. No apology, nothing. I bought a replacement SSD drive from OWC. Drive came in fine, installed it with the helpful video from the website, and then the trouble began. The package I bought came with an external HD case for the old SSD drive inside my computer. That's how you transfer the data from one SSD to the other. But the screws in the enclosure wouldn't come out, since OWC had sent the wrong screwdriver (some special kinda screw). Oh well... not a big deal right? Except first the customer service person tells me this is a KNOWN error that they haven't corrected, something wrong with the way the enclosures are manufactured. And second, she wants me to PAY to have a replacement enclosure shipped out. WHAT?! Well, I got a supervisor to skip that part, so they send me the replacement, and that one doesn't work either. So I have to call in again and the lady on the phone makes it sound like OWC is doing me a favor by sending me another enclosure before I send the one I have back. Seriously people? The drive might be amazing, but the customer service has been legendarily bad. I'm in this deep and I don't want to have to go find another company to get the SSD from, so I'll stick it out. But I won't ever shop with OWC again and I'd recommend you find another place to shop from. Wish I had checked the reviews before I shopped like you're doing! Update: Kudos to OWC to quickly responding to a complaint on Yelp. Too bad they won't fix the problem just as quickly. If I could give your company 0 stars I would. I have had nothing but problems with the HDD I bought for my 2015 MBP 13". After a few rounds with 'customer service' I was told that I would have to RMA the drive. The option I was given was to go without a computer while waiting for the RMA (a business computer) or have the hold $500 frozen while they sent me a replacement. So lets get this straight; they sell me a product they acknowledge is not working / defective and expect me to take the penalty while they correct their mistake. Totally unacceptable and the worst part was the customer service manager told me "I'm sorry you 'feel' that way"... how condescending can you be? I am not FEELING anything, seriously? You acknowledged you product is not working correctly, that makes it a FACT your product is faulty not a feeling I have. This is hands-down the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I WILL report you to the BBB. I WILL write a negative review on every social media outlet I can. I WILL report this as FRAUD on my account and bar you from making anymore charges while i recoup the money you stole. DON'T BUY Custom Mac Pro with dual SSD RAID as a boot drive bought May 2011 Unfortunately as much as I wanted to make this work it just didn't.. After receiving the unit which was very exciting to see it perform fast, it already exhibited issues. All documented with emails, I brought to their attention that the eSata card was not working properly and wasn't recognizing peripherals but the main issue was the booting. for months now I had to put up with the heart wrenching question.. "will it boot up today?" Anyway for the speed of the machine I said I would put up with that once or twice a month and followed their instructions on repairing permissions etc..which it worked only if it restarted properly. They would only blame software not hardware. Cut a long story short both SSDs failed in the space of 3 months of each other, first last August and last one this last week of October 2011 so I had Apple put a normal hard drive on it. They never replied to my complain of August when the first one failed (would you if you were at fault??) So my advise...DON'T BUY from them.. spend the extra money and buy for the manufacturer like Apple and believe you're saving more money at the end.." read more

So, I had previously written up a pretty poor review. I had a frustrating experience trying to sort out when the product I purchased would ship after paying for expedited overnight shipping. There was a disconnect between the timing of having products available and when they were listed as available on the website (the website listed them before they were actually available by a couple of days it seems). Over the past couple days I chatted with reps online multiple times to try and get everything sorted out. To be fair to OWC this all happened over a weekend, so I can't really expect them to be operating at full steam. The reps were all actually very nice, and did what they could to help me out - this was much appreciated. In the end, OWC managed to follow through on my order - and while it's shipping 1 business day later than I had hoped, they didn't just leave me hanging. They're helping me out with the shipping cost and getting the product out for overnight delivery. Stuff like this will happen with any company at some point, what actually has changed this from a negative to a positive experience has been the customer service that I've received. They have a willingness to actually be proactive about making their customer feel important. Seeing how they've handled my order and actually brought closure to the whole thing, I'm sure I'll be making future purchases at OWC. read more

They are pretty much the only competitor in their market and they allow themselves to not respect their policies. I ordered the wrong drive because of my error, and theirs because I was pointed to the wrong model of SSD, went through the RMA process to send it back, and now they charged me a restocking fee even though the product page says no restocking fee. read more

I am an unhappy customer, here is why. Jan 24 2018 I received the refurbished iMac I ordered as a replacement for the iMac I had ... it turns on, but it would not pair up with my wireless iMac mouse and keyboard. I can could not do anything with it. The iMac came with no keyboard and no mouse. I called MacSales Customer Service: They told me that if I am using iMac wireless keyboard and mouse, it will not be able to pair up. I will need a mouse and keyboard that hard wire connects to the computer in order to set it up to work with my iMac wireless keyboard and mouse. If you do not have an extra mouse and keyboard, I will need to purchase them. I should have been informed of this before I placed my order. I returned the iMac to Other World Computing for a refund. It cost me $58 to UPS it back to them. Thus I was an unhappy customer. read more
