Coming back from Vancouver and stopped here for lunch. It's a nice 2 story building with indoor and outdoor seating as well on the 2nd floor. The service is super friendly and the food is great! The menu was breakfast items when we arrived there after 12 but there's a Seasonal menu which is available after 3 pm. We had the Breakfast Smashed potato hash & eggs ($14.50) - a bowl of smashed potatoes, brussels sprouts, caramelized onions and very interesting enough, pickled grapes- topped with 2 eggs sunny side up. Seasoned nicely and can be shared by 2. The street frites ($8) were nice and crispy, big and fat. The pretzel ($11.50) was nice and buttery with a crispy crust and soft inside. Hubby sampled the pickled egg ($2) which was bright yellow from tumeric. He said that the egg was very mild and could've been pickled longer. Pint glasses were $7. A tad bit on the pricey side but we really enjoyed the food. As an aside, the bathroom had feminine products in a basket-nice touch and the kiddo enjoyed playing the corn hole games and drawing with chalk outside in the play area. I really liked this spot. I had the spring honey saison which was delicious. We had some snacks at this spot and they did not disappoint. Everything that went by looks yummy. We shared the Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese and the latkes. Everything was tasty. The latkes were light and flavorful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Wow! Found my new favorite brewery in Bellingham! Good beer and such a fun food menu. I always get sad when a giant pretzel is on the menu but it doesn't come with beer cheese. At this point, they're brand-new. They already have a great little space and a great lineup of classic styles of beer, and the food looks incredible. They've nailed that perfect blend of making you feel like you've come over to hang out with your friends at their home, and everything about the beer and food is first class. It's tough to beat the feeling that what they're serving is made to very demanding standards, but the vibe is completely relaxed and neighborly. It's a 2-story building across the street from some of the best kitchen cutlery made anywhere on the planet (that's a story for another review). There's a little host stand out front with empty growlers (so you can see the size) and the day's menu. They've really considered every detail--you can see that the people running the joint have been in the industry for a while. The outside host stand will probably move once C19 lockdown is over, but it's a funky, charming vibe for now. I do need to say that a couple servers walked back and forth past us multiple times without even saying hello, let alone asking us if we'd like a table. We didn't have to wait all that long, and I'm sure somebody other than them was doing that actual hosting yesterday. But train your staff to at least acknowledge people waiting in line, even if they're not regulars yet. Once we sat, we tore into the beer list quickly, but had just come from lunch so we can't comment on the food. It all *looked* incredible, and virtually everyone around us got something, so we saw a lot of it. I am already ready to come back for the food, too. Anyway, the beers. Pilseners. One unfiltered, one filtered. Both amazing. Light body, perfect bubbles, beautiful grassy and slightly spicy aromatics, quenching mouthfeel. I bought a growler of the kellerbier (unfiltered) to take home. They have cool pot-bellied growlers! Kinda wish they had crowlers but it's early in the game for them so I'm happy to own Otherlands growlers now. Saisons. I am so stoked to have another skillful saison brewer in the state. Each one is worth a barrow full of gold to me. One of their saisons yesterday was "well hopped" and the other was "extra hopped." They both are from the Dupont side of the saison family tree, showing floral notes, a bit of pepper, some tangy citrus, and then each showing distinct personalities from their hop profiles. I brought home a growler of the "extra hopped." IPA & Stout. The Wildflower IPA was excellent--big flavor and aromas with a crystal-clear body and nothing over the top. Distinctly not a hazy, not a glass of fruit juice. The export stout was toasty and a bit chocolatey, chewy and malty without being filling. If I had enough growlers of my own and had brought them all, I probably would have gotten growlers of every beer. These are classic European beers rather than the fruity, over-the-top stuff that's currently trendy in the U.S. (The U.S. makes millions of giga-gallons of AMAZING craft beers, too--my comment on the trendy stuff is ONLY on the trendy stuff. These guys have a skillful old-world thing going here.). The inside here is super nice. Shiny light wood floors and carpentry, dark painted walls, light and airy, cool little details to the decor. Uncluttered. You feel like you could hang out here for hours and never have anything but fun. I can't wait to come back. read more

I have been in this place tree times and have good experience throughout . Starting with the friendly welcoming smiles , there's outside or roomy upstairs seating options . They have healthy food options ; falafel yet not authentic, but delicious has an attractive mouth watering spicy sauce on it .Pierogies! Ok , so don't expect the version of it you had at an Italian restaurant that's fried in butter and what not , this is boiled and will have different texture yet the taste is preserved . This is their interpretation of the food , and healthier overall approach . I am a big fan . Their beer menu has good items , I'm enjoyed the lager . This brewery is in the middle of a neighborhood, just a little outside of downtown Bellingham. There is a nice outdoor set up that seems like it would be amazing in the summer. You get some nice mountain views too. Not dog friendly inside but it is on the patio. We sat outside on a rainy and windy day in the 1 hour there was sun which was just glorious. However it was still very windy so the outside patio's separators were blowing around like crazy and I was definitely chilly. We asked if we could turn on the heater next to us, and the server (who was super nice and attentive) couldn't get it to work due to the wind. She had someone else come out who I think was the owner or manager and he made several comments about distancing while there wasn't a single other party out on the patio which felt a little strange. Not a very long beer menu and only one cider. I ordered the lost giants cider (nice dry cider) and my partner ordered the wildflower IPA. Food menu was great with lots of European options (pretzel, pierogis, latkes, etc). We ordered the farmhouse platter which came with three cheeses (how many cheeses jerry???? *kevin hart voice* lol), pita, hummus, pickled asparagus, pickled egg, pickle, and olives. Hummus and pita were my favorites. Didn't care for the olives! Plenty of breweries in Bellingham that have more drink options but this is one of the few with unique food. Would give a 3.5 based on our experience today but rounding up. Give it a try, especially in the summer! read more

This week I'm in Bellingham, Washington, exploring the local breweries and their modest pubs. I knew I stumbled across a gem when the normally rain soaked clouds parted and a singular ray of sunshine brightened my path as I pulled up in front of Otherlands Beer. It was a signal. I had two choices of where to enjoy my brief visit to Otherlands: indoors or outdoors. Again, I was in Bellingham, which immediately dictated that I was going to be dining indoors, as I prefer my meals to stay warm as long as possible. But, in fairness, they have a nice patio area which looked comfortable, but, again, it was cold and mostly cloudy. The weather strongly suggested indoor dining. They have a spacious dining area upstairs, and the bar is tastefully decorated and inviting. The aesthetic is exactly what you want to see in a small pub. They offered 6 beer selections, all of their own design. They proudly boast that they are "rustic, folksy, and funky," and I couldn't have said it better myself. Being a fan of black beers, I was marginally disappointed to learn that the closest thing they had was a dark lager, but it boasted of being malty and full bodied, so I said, "why the heck not?" The Night Mayor was smooth and malty, and had a hint of something roasted...not sure what it was, but it was a perfect companion for me while I waited on my meal. The meal? Well. That's what drew me to the place. They don't offer the standard bar fare. What do you do when everyone else is similar to each other, but you want to step into the scene? Well, you do something that no one else is doing--make your cuisine exotic, but with a familiar feel to it. In this case, they chose to serve European treats. And THIS is what makes them special. I chose the perogies and the latkes, and I'll address them individually. Perogies--so, I've had perogies in several different places, and they are usually different in each location. In this pub, they were like boiled dumplings and mine were filled with sauerkraut, served over mushrooms, with rye crunches, and crème fraiche. And they were AMAZING! The other choice was potato and cheese filled with a berbere curry sauce, but I'm certain I chose the best option. Latkes--I must confess, I've never had latkes before. And now I really regret not discovering them sooner. These little fried "crack balls" are absolutely addictive. They're golden fried potato and celery root pancakes (more like a fritter, really) served with lemon thyme apple butter, crème fraiche and pickled red onions. And let me tell you, I ordered the half order, and I wished I went for the full serving. I know I'm going to remember these devilish delights for many years to come. Otherlands has a great staff, tons of friendly smiles, excellent service, and a unique menu that will continue to set them apart from their competitors. Their foods and beers compliment each other. We came here primarily for beer but decided to check out their brunch options and had a wonderful experience. They have 6 beers on tap, with half pours of everything available for $3.50, a super reasonable deal. They offer brunch on the weekend from 10:30-3, with everything vegetarian and many dishes veganizable. It was hard to choose, as so many things looked delicious. I eventually went with the shakshuka--vegan version. You get a piping hot skillet, with red pepper and tomato sauce, with tofu scramble, cashew crème, some herbs, and served with 2 generous pieces of freshly baked bread. Really fantastic dish. I personally don't like the sourness of most beers of this style, but this place absolutely nailed my preferences. As far as food, we had the farmers cheese pierogis, and they were great. The salt and vinegar fries w vegan aioli plus the smoked beet Ruben, again a large size and quite tasty. What a great find. It's a good sign when everything on the menu calls out. The beer is quite good. I had a hoppy saison that was impressive. Often such beers loose the delicacy of the style to the hops, here they achieved a sublime balance. Now the food. I had the falafel, and it was the best I've had in years. It comes with fries which are at once crispy and meaty. And the portions are huge! Two could eat from most offerings. My husband had the latkes which were crispy and wonderful. How can this be?? A Bellingham brewery not dominated by IPAs? What? We tried Otherland on a Saturday afternoon and I was so happy to see so many beers on the menu that sounded appealing to me. Otherland's focus is on European-style beers - Helles, kellerbier, Czech, weizen -- and they are complex and highly quaffable. We came back the next morning (!!) for brunch and more beer, and wound up trying them all. There wasn't a beer in the bunch that I wouldn't have again. Now, the food. First off, no meat, which I consider to be a very good thing. I'm not vegetarian but I'm so sick of pork belly on virtually everyone's menu. I had a sandwich with a potato latke, pickled onions, Gouda cheese and other yummy things on a pretzel bun, with a side of more potatoes. My husband had an enormous burrito stuffed with eggs and sweet potatoes and so much more (but no meat). We also shared an order of salt and vinegar fries; I'm a fry addict and these are among the best I've ever had. Both entrees were also delicious,i and gave us lunch for the next day, as the portions are generous. Service is friendly and efficient, too.
