This brewery is super cute. I love the posters and the overall vibe, and I've really tried to like it. But the ordering system is honestly a mess. You stand in a long line just to get a menu, since there aren't any available beforehand. Once you finally get up there, you might get redirected mid-order like it's some kind of game show. By the time you actually order, you've barely had a second to look at anything. Then you're stuck standing in a crowded area waiting for your drink with no clear place to go, while staff weave around you like you're in the way. I promise, I would love to not be standing there either. Drinks have been underwhelming too. The ranch water was so weak I thought maybe it was just a suggestion of tequila. And then the iPad flips around with a 25 percent tip option, which feels bold considering you're finding your own menu, ordering under pressure, waiting in chaos, and bussing your own table. I actually like this location of El Sueñito/Frelard Tamales better than the original one in Seattle just because the Bellingham location has a giant outdoor seating area. This place also has a slightly different workflow - you order at the counter rather than table service. Other than that, they're very similar experiences. They have a good selection of mostly lighter style beers. I think most people who enjoy beer would be able to find something they like here. read more

We stopped in here while on vacation for a few drinks and a snack. We ordered the queso with chorizo. Honestly, not worth the calories. Sorry. I found it really lacking flavor, which is odd for something with chorizo. But the typical spices I love in it were lacking. Cheese was also bland. I love that they are either making their own chips or buying thicker ones but they desperately need salt or any kind of seasoning. Now we didn't eat anything else but the other food coming out looked incredible! For the beer and cider.....100!!!! Seriously, I unique, refreshing, and overall a wonderful surprise. This was our go-to place for food, drinks, and atmosphere. Yesterday, my husband and I ordered drinks and a plate of nachos. Imagine my surprise when I lifted a chip loaded with queso and guac to find a long black strand of hair trailing behind. It was the perfect weather this Sunday to visit El Suenito and their small, but mighty outdoor patio space. We must've come during the down time because there wasn't a wait at all for ordering and we managed to grab a table outside with our dogs. First of all, how great are those Frelard Tamales?! We tried the Salsa Roja Pork, Chorizo & Cheese and Bean & Cheese Tamales (they were out of their other rotating flavors). Each 1/2 pound tamale was packed with flavor, and the meal portion was perfect with the rice and beans. I also appreciated that they had non-beer options, like cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages, so that everyone can enjoy sipping on something. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and really got lucky with the crowd and wait time (we went around 5PM). The next time I visit, I'll have to get a beer flight to try more of their beers! :) read more

Came for the beer. Came back for the Tamales. This place is a gem. I tried several beers and everone was extremely well executed. My favorites were the dark Mexican Lager and the stout. Maybe big malty beers is their wheelhouse, maybe I was just in that mood. Either way it was a hit. We came in after a light breakfast and weren't planning to eat. Smelling the Tamales coming out nearly chaged our minds. Instead we came back at supper time and indulged. The food is amazing! I love tamales and these were some of the best I've ever had. This was our second brewery stop when getting to Bellingham....just down the road from our first stop The Otherlands. The brewery looks very inviting from the street... large patio w strung papel picados and an open garage door to the brewery and tap room. As we perused the tap list we watched several plates of delicious looking food come out for orders! The sweet May helped us w our beers selections; I opted for a Conejo Azteca and for my mom Alebrijes. As I glanced around... looking at the merch above the tap window I spotted a Support Queer Beer shirt which prompted me to confirm that this beer was? I left w the rad shirt!! El Suenito is queer owned and brewed! We ended up stopping here again on our last day as well as the brewery as in our top three in Bellingham. I don't drink beer but when on a pub crawl for a friends birthday. This spot was a highlight for me because they had more options than just beer! I ordered a margarita and asked if they had flavored ones and the bartender offered me a huckleberry syrup that wasn't on the menu but they had been sampling for potential new drinks. It was very kind to offer it and it was PHENOMENAL. (I may have a bit of a sweet tooth). I also ordered a couple tacos and they were the perfect pairing with a drink. After being on a RV road trip for a month away from California, we were craving for Mexican food and this was recommended by some of the staff at local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Did an online take-out order for a group of volunteers back in June on a Saturday evening. Glad we did the online order because it was crowded and parking was limited. Once we walked up to counter to let them know were there for the pickup order they gave us a pager. One of the items was sold out and staff handled it beautifully with another replacement and we were on our way. The food was wonderful and very authentic tamales and the style of masa we like. Very dense and moist masa is what we like and the chicken and pork filling was massive. We ordered the red and green sauce to top the tamales and loved it. The red sauce was the exact kind of heat we were looking for. The rice was OK but the beans were really good. Look forward to coming back here on our next trip to Bellingham. read more

Steve and I have been waiting for this brewery to open for a couple of years now. We monitored their progress on Instagram. We attempted to get their tamales before this location opened I believe at a bookstore last year in which they were kind of a pop up for a short time but the line was out the door and up the street so we decided against it. When this location opened in February we wanted to steer clear of the opening day for fear of running into the same thing so we waited just a bit longer. We were glad we waited, while still very busy we ill timed something else and that was all the traffic being heavier than usual to see the tulip fields in Mount Vernon(which I recommend but prepare for congestion and go early). So by the time we reached Bellingham we were in much need of craft beer and tamales. While the restaurant was busy and a small line was there to place orders they got people on their way fast. Once your order was ready you went up to a part of the front counter to pick it up. At first the tamales we picked out on the menu posted in the window we later learned were sold out at the front counter but we improvised easily and got other tamales with different filling inside than the ones we picked. Truth be told I am not sure if you can go wrong with any of their tamales. Despite us having to change our order from our first choices our second choices were wonderful. The tamales were nice and moist but not too moist. Some tamales can taste a little on the dry side but these were absolutely perfect and the filling inside was so very flavorful. We also ordered a appetizer of guacamole and chips which also did not disappoint in the slightest. The guacamole was wonderfully creamy! And of course I saw an opportunity to get their Mexican Lager which was a most appropriate time to have with tamales and guacamole and chips. The tamales and the size of the plate also came with rice and beans. Sometimes I'm not always enthused with these side dishes but not a problem here. It just added to the great meal Steve and I had. We were so very glad to get to this brewery at last and it was worth the wait. We purchased some t shirts to represent the brewery while being out and about on other trips and without a shadow of a doubt will be back for those tamale again. After making a few other stops at other craft breweries in town we prepared for the slog back with the tulip traffic but this was definitely a highlight to the whole trip! read more

I came here late afternoon on a busy Friday. Initially, I was hoping that it would be less crowded since opening week, but it was still packed. I tried a lighter beer ($5 for a 10oz) and got the soyrizo tamale plate that came with rice and beans. Some pros of this place are the variety of food they serve outside the traditional food truck/brewery combo, and the open area seating that will no doubt be more popular in the summer days (currently lacking a covered outdoor area, so be prepared to get wet). They also had non-beer drinks like ciders, margaritas, and aqua frescas as well. That being said, I was not overly impressed by the soyrizo tamale or rice and beans, but I do have to give them kudos for the incredibly filling meal for $13. I felt there was more tamale corn filling as opposed to soyrizo than I would hope. As the business continues to develop, hopefully the tamale demand evens out as they get their bearings, as they commonly sell out of the more traditional tamales like chicken and pork earlier on. I would encourage folks to check this place out. I wouldn't mind visiting again in the summer and giving their tamales or tacos another shot. read more

I lived in Texas for ten years, one year with a Mexican family. I have eaten my share of tamales. The one chicken tamale I had here was good... very good. Probably one of the best I've ever had. At first, I thought $6 for a single tamale was a little on the expensive side, but when it came out, it was the size of a hotdog bun! Tamales can often be dry, but this was moist, fresh and flavorful. I am eager to return and try some of the other types. I am not a beer drinker, so I am unable to comment on the brews.
