After seeing recent positive reviews for Otter Moving and storage, I hired them to handle a move from a 1-bedroom apartment to a 2- bedroom apartment. From the start, the customer service was friendly and straight forward. The team had great communication and were very efficient. I was given a very reasonable quote for a move in addition to some moving boxes. I ordered about 30 boxes from them which they delivered 2 weeks prior to my move. On the morning of the move, Gregory and his team arrived and they did a quick once-over of the inventory which gets confirmed the day before. In addition to the items I had inventoried, i failed to mention 6 large duffle bags of clothes. My building also didnt allow the movers to park in the residential parking lot so i was charged an inconvenience fee of 150 the day of. I also decided the day before some items i initially wanted to take with me like a bookshelf and an entertainment unit were too big for my new apartment, so Otter Movers hauled them out and brought them to a dump site. in terms of packing, I did most of the packing and also had to take major appliances like my fridge and stove - they were wonderful and disassembling any furniture that needed to be moved and reassembling at the new apartment. There was great communication and despite having to pay extra on the day of, it was due to my failure to inventory properly. There was some damage to some crates, a nightstand, and items fell out of a crate that I cannot find- however, despite that, I had a great experience with these movers and will def hire again. I had a bit of a complicated move and Otter was flexible, accommodating, and also gave me a very reasonable quote that was right in the middle range of all the companies I compared (and I compared a lot). Ultimately I chose to go with Otter because of their flexibility, fabulous communication at Ivan, and flat rate cost (I dislike paying hourly, not knowing what the move will cost, then dealing with movers that seem to be going slowly to jack up the price). Move 1: Move some of my items from NYC to Boston Move 2: Move the other half of my items from NYC to LA, but on a different date about a month later, store the items, then deliver on a future date Getting a COI for my building in NYC was easy and hassle free. For both moves, the movers showed up on time and were prepared, fast, and helpful. I had to change my LA move date a few times due to changing plans, and Otter was extremely flexible with this, allowing me to pay for additional storage to move the delivery date back. Move 1, I rented a car to drive to Boston and meet them there. Somehow the movers beat me, and Ivan helped me communicate with the team on the ground and they allowed me a bit more of a grace period before they charge me for waiting. Movers were great and made sure that everything was placed where I wanted it. Move 2, I believe Otter outsourced the long distance part of my move to a different moving company and some items arrived damaged. My white couch was soiled and there were some dents and scratches on some other items. I was initially very upset and wished I hadn't moved the things at all, but Otter went above and beyond to get it right. They didn't pressure me to get them photos right away (I was not in town yet but had a friend receive the items and note the damage) and told me to take my time to make sure I documented everything that I had a problem with. They always responded back to my emails right away and ultimately made me a very fair offer to remediate the damages. Because of the positive way in which they handled this situation, I am still giving them 4 stars despite the damage. My takeway: Short Distance moves - 100% trust Otter to take care of your items and to do professional job. Long Distance moves - Outsourced, so it's less certain how your items will be handled, but you have Otter's guarantee behind it All in all, Otter will take care of you and make sure things are right. The long distance move was the lowest quote I could find, by a lot, because they deliver within a 2 week window and not a guaranteed date (my move was the smallest/minimum size so they probably just added it on to a larger move where there was space in the truck). Given that they remedied the situation and I chose to take the risk on the less expensive move, I am not mad. If you have precious / irreplaceable items, I probably would not trust them for a long distance move, unless you make sure to wrap everything very well yourself (I think this is where things went wrong - there was not proper padding and packaging for a long distance move and storage). read more

I requested quotes from 6-7 moving companies including Otter, Perfect Moving, Piece of Cake, Man with a Van, and a few others. The price quote Otter provided was very straightforward with no hidden fees. It's based on distance and the volume of your move; there are no hourly fees. I put down a $50 deposit to secure my moving date and time, and they contacted me by phone and email the day before to complete the rest of the payment as well as confirm all details of the move. Communication with Otter was extremely easy and smooth; they are very responsive and informative if you have any questions leading up to the day of the move. On the morning of my move, my movers (Izzy and his team) texted me 30 minutes before they arrived to let me know their ETA. They were very punctual and arrived when they said they would. I was very happy with Izzy and his team; they were friendly, efficient, and made the move very easy for me. It was a rainy day and they made sure to put down a cloth in the doorway to keep the floors dry which I appreciate. My mattress, desk, and desk chair were carefully wrapped before they moved it out. It has been our fourth move in 10 years and it's been the only time that i have things broken, but not only glasses and mugs, but lamps, decorations, furniture- the wooden legs of my table where broken which talks about the careless handling of my things. Even one vintage furniture that I payed EXTRA to get caution for it was damaged. The packing team in NY was ok but since minute one the person in charge was specifing me that usually the tip ranges from 15 to 20% which btw is false but the fact that he mentioned it before even finishing the job was outrageous. I did ended up giving this amount just so I had my stuff taken well care of, which was so delusional of me. The worst part was after the packing- so the estimated time that I was told was between 3 and 10 business days, although they swore that it would be shorter than this ( which it wasn't) but after the packing ZERO follow up was made from their end, zero info of where my stuff was, of when was it going to be shipped etc, my husband needed to call daily to have some kind of answer and they where super un professional at the phone, telling him at first that the truck already left NY and then the next day they weren't sure so this was a nightmare. When our things arrived 10 days after, was the worst service, the guys where complaining all the time that there where a lot of boxes, then they just threw literally everything in my living room and didn't event finish assembling the furniture, they handled my things poorly and just wanted to get out of there. So bottom line, I know the estimates are more competitive than other companies but you get a terrible service for that saving, and the worst thing is all the broken / damaged things that you loose for ever. For hiring movers for the first time ever, I was pretty nervous. I went with Otter for my move within New York. To land on Otter, I called 5 or so moving companies to get quotes based on the items I had (about a 1 bedroom apartments worth). Otter provided the best/lowest deal, with friendly customer service. The moving overall went smooth. Movers came prepared with boxes, blankets, wraps, bubble wrap. I did some prep work to help them out and consolidate most of my items but they took care of several boxes, and bulk items like my bed, desk and more. I had more items than anticipated but I tipped the movers well as they were nice and efficient throughout. No damage was done. Overall Otter moving was a great experience. So I want to disclose that I didn't end up using their services but I still wanted to come on here to leave them a good review considering how accommodating they were as far as trying to get me the best price. Altogether, I looked up about 4-5 different moving companies in NYC but Otter became one of my top two. The quote they gave me was a very fair price but I decided to go with a different company because they quoted me a slightly cheaper price and offered me a nursing discount (I work as a nurse). However, I got a follow up call from Peter later that evening and he offered to lower my quote price to even less than what I was offered at the other company (which I thought was a complete steal already). Peter worked around a few things to get me the discounted price and if I hadn't already sent in my deposit/payment and completed the paperwork with the other company, I would have gone with Otter instead. All to say that the service seemed great and they really do work with you to try to get you a fair price. I would recommend and would definitely consider for my next move! read more

Don't use Otter moving. I moved last week and it was a very unprofessional situation. Only 2 guys showed up. One did not understand a word of English and the other only very little. It took much longer because it was only the 2 of them and they also damaged 2 lamps. One being an Italian designer lamp. They packed it too tight and a glass element broke. I had to call several times about the damage, not one time did anyone reach out to me. Now they only want to pay out a minimal refund which is shocking and claim I should have purchased additional insurance for myself... Do not use. They charge women more and they break your things and take no accountability. When a woman says they were charged twice that of their male friend who used the same service, two weeks prior for a more expensive time window (mornings cost more) on a much larger apartment - the only appropriate reply is some version of "there must be a mistake, let us look into this..." But instead, good old Vlad The Bully told me I was ridiculous (nice touch, dismissing women who dare to call out discrimination). My broken family heirlooms over 100 years old? No reply at all. I paid $1215 (not what I was quoted) to move a 420 sq ft studio + a 50 sq ft storage space and have my things destroyed. I fully expect them to deny and attack in reply if they even reply at all. Bullies are all cowards. Oh yeah, he also offered me a full refund just to make it all go away - but I don't want a refund, I want equality and accountability. Own it, clown. It happened. Otter Moving was an overall positive experience for me. They were quick, professional, and careful with all my stuff (nothing broke and everything wrapped/handled beautifully). The staff are nice but do keep to themselves. The only thing I was disappointed about was that they weren't 100% transparent with pricing. I was very clear before the move that my bed frame included storage drawers and that the whole thing would need to be disassembled/reassembled. They did not charge me extra prior but the second the movers showed up they told me they were going to charge an extra $200 for it. I was able to get in touch with the office and they acknowledged that they missed this and provided the service to me for free. I give them credit for handling this exceptionally. Additionally, when booking, the company seems to suggest that wardrobe boxes are included but I was charged for them. They also charged a hefty "special handling" fee for a wardrobe but it was not handled any differently from the rest of my furniture - not disassembled, but simply wrapped and carried. Other companies did not charge me extra for this when I compared quotes. I feel like the company needs to be more transparent about the exact pricing because the reason I chose them was that I thought they were. Note that they do charge for every single box and item you have by the cubic foot, though they are upfront about it! They did include things that other companies don't though - like TV box, mirror box, etc. - this is impressive. Overall, they were professional, swift, and got the job done with no hassle at moderate pricing compared to other companies. I tipped all 3 of my movers $100 each. read more
