It's been over 10 years since the last time I went to Our Sons. When I came in 2011 it took nearly an HOUR to get our fried chicken and the service was bad. But since it's been over 10 years I decided to give it another try (May 20th 2023 lunch time) in hope things were better. I was greatly disappointed. Firstly there is counter seating (about 5 seats) and otherwise tiny booths along a narrow dining space. The fabric on the booth seats is torn in multiple places in every booth - which are cramped and difficult for my dining companion to get into and out of. Menus are so tiny print that you need a magnifying lens to read it and in fact if I had not checked the menu online, I wouldn't know what they offered in general (even online it's not clear what beverages they have). Naturally the prices for everything was higher than listed online. Ordering went fine. But it took over 40 minutes to get our food. What is worse, I could see our food ready to be served - which the waitress ignored for at least 10 minutes; no shock my mashed potatoes were ice cold. No one cared about getting our food to us. All this time I was waiting to take medicine that cannot be taken on an empty stomach. And the waitress didn't notice. She was chatting it up with other customers. Likewise, since there's no signage to tell you to pay at the register when ready, it was painful trying to actually pay for the meal. As for the food - nothing to write home about. It wasn't terrible, but definitely does not live up to the hype. i honestly could have gotten better food and for less money at the KFC on Scalp Ave. Or, for that matter, made myself and I'm a pretty lousy cook, especially towards fried chicken. In summary, unless your aim is to throw money at a small business on principal, try another restaurant. There was nothing happy about my experience. read more

I was born and raised just outside of Johnstown and could absolutely kick myself for not getting here sooner. We grabbed an order for takeout and waited about 25 minutes which was absolutely worth it as the fried chicken came out hot and fresh. They go fairly light with their batter but it was crisp and perfectly seasoned. We also enjoyed the sides of mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw. Bonus points for their huge gob for dessert as well. The inside is no frills, but I can see why everyone raves about this place. Hopefully we can make it back here one day for breakfast. read more

The service was good, but food was terrible. My eggs were only half fried, the potatoes did not look good and tasted ever worse, the bacon I had to send back. When I got the bacon back, it looked like they had placed it in a deep fried until it looked like a black ribbon. We will never go there again. They did have good coffee. read more

I stopped in for lunch and was taken back in time! The food was very comforting and delicious. I wasn't brave enough to try a 4 piece chicken dinner (too much food) so I had the chicken tenderloins. Everything was great, the roll was to die for. I even returned this evening for a piece of strawberry pie. Everyone was delightful, my waitress Jenna was extremely friendly (no, I am not related to anyone at this establishment, plus I live 1000 miles away). I travel for work and this was one of the best local restaurants I've frequented. Plus customers were quick to explain what a Gob was. The prices couldn't be beaten! $6.99 for dinner. read more

Assortment of good homemade pies; heaping piles of homemade baked goods, including local tradition the "gob" available on the counter. Diner/ mom & pop restaurant atmosphere. Go just to see the owner's wife, a matronly woman with blue eyeshadow, octagon eyeglasses on a chain, and enormous white pouf hairdo. Try to get one of the booths by the window, order a cup of coffee & watch the world go by. Catering and banquet facilities are available, but quality drops when they do large orders. read more

3/02/2016: Okay, another trip to Our Sons, and I'm updating my review and bumping up the rating to 3 stars. Very good coffee with free refills! Decent diner-style food- Expect a heart attack on a plate! Busy place where the servers hustle; still would not recommend stopping here if you're in a hurry. Today there was a large group of cops and another group post funeral. (Original review): I hate to give 2-star reviews to locally-owned "Mom and Pop"-type places, but I just can't give this place 3 stars. Came here with my husband before seeing Bob Dylan at the War Memorial and was almost late for the show when the fried chicken we were told would take 10-12 minutes took closer to 30. My husband's chicken was good but not great (and portions were surprisingly small for an area in love with all things super-sized). My burger was totally "blah," as were my Ore-Ida like frozen crinkle cut fries (just like they used to serve in the school cafeteria). Two saving graces: totally amazing and ridiculously huge gobs and pretty good homemade potato pierogis. I might come back again if I were in the area, but I definitely would *not* make a special trip! read more

I had a marvelous dinner here tonight with my wife. I ordered their pressure cooked fried chicken which was fantastic. But it got better since they had homemade perogies as a side dish! My wife had the rib sampler which had some excellent baby back ribs. A ton of food and we were out of there for under 20 bucks. Can't wait to go back. read more

Cause I felt like it I gave this poormans version of KFC 3 stars. I only gave it 3 stars cause it is the only place in Johnstown where they don't ask you if you'd like apple pie or biggie size... The Chicken is ok though.... Escape everyone as fast as you can.... read more

Very big fan of Our Sons! In the 3-4 month period since I 1st went here; I now go no less that twice a week. Very inexpensive, the food is great, the atmosphere is classic Johnstown, and great service. - Love breakfast here when I can get here by 11am during the week, 1pm on weekends. 2 eggs scrambled, homefries, toast, and sausage. Can't bring myself to try any other breakfast since I already found perfection! Some times as an add on, my girl will ask me to pick up blueberry pancakes; she says there wonderful! - If I go in the afternoon/evening - I get country fried steak. The best! (No need for any other description) - I've had they're Chopped Steak before, it's very good. - My girl had a cheese burger there. She said it was in the top ten she's ever had and it's one of the cheapest meals! There sides are very good as well - mashed potatos, corn, perogies, etc. I had to stop with the gobs but they are incredible. Can you tell I love this place? read more

Above average homemade dinner rolls. Just make sure you get them fresh. But this isn't why my wife and I go there. Yeah, you guessed correctly ... it's the chicken! The pressure fried chicken is my favorite chicken in town. And when I say "town" I'm generalizing ... I'm including all surrounding areas. Just try it. It's delicious. I always get a side of ranch to dip my chicken in, because its a great homemade ranch. And while you're at it, you might as while add an order of their in-house pierogies. Also delicious. Just make sure you're a fan of butter-grilled onions, because they're loaded with them. read more

On March 15th, 2009 my military friends and I went in for lunch. It was extremely busy but being that we're from Washington DC and the Holiday Inn recommended them to us we thought that the restaurant would be a hit! Well we waited by the door in our uniforms for over 30 minutes for a table. When we were finally sat down the lady took our beverages and told us it will be a few moments until she got them back to us. We waited for over an hour for our drinks. Finally she brought them to us, waterlogged! The ice had melted so you know they had sat for sometime. We were afraid to ask for new drinks because it took that long to get them the first time around. We were going to get up and leave but we thought the outside room was busy. We were tucked away in a corner in the back room by the bathrooms. Once we ordered our food and it came, the cole slaw, rolls and pie was the best part of the meal. Our chicken was rubbery and the mashed potatoes were instant and they had no flavor. 2 hours later we were finished eating, we actually never seen our waitress during our meal service other than to bring us our meals or to bring us our water logged drinks. We walked out to get our checks and our waitress had gone home it was the end of her shift and they said they didn't know we were in the back room. How can you not know you have customers in the back room? How can you be a waitress and leave your tables and not tell anybody you have them? They didn't even have a check for us as she didn't write our order down and we had to tell them what we ate. If we weren't honest people our $15 meal could of been less than what it was because they didn't have a clue! So we would recommend if your going to eat at this diner to go when they're slow so you get service and tell them you don't want to sit in the back room so they don't forget about you!! read more

We stopped by here after a visit to the Johnstown Children's Museum. There were 3 adults and 5 kids ranging from 1-7 years old. Despite our best efforts the kids were very (joyfully) loud. Lucky for us we were seated in a back room with only two other, understanding patrons. Our waitress, Sue, was gratuitous and wonderful. She assured us that she herself had 4 children and that these days would soon pass- one day we would be able to eat in peace. We were very happy with the quality of our food and our service. My mother left a 50% tip on the table and paid the check with exact change. At check out my mother expressed her pleasure to a women we assume was the owner. In response, she snapped at my mother and said "I hope you left a tip." We won't be back. read more

A staff member at the local museum recommended Our Sons'! This place takes you back in time! The food was delicious! The waitress was nice! The owner was nice and he is a cool guy. The bake goods are out this world! We bought bread and a gob (whoopie pie here in York County PA)! The prices were excellent,no complaints! While sitting there eating, customer were stopping in and buying bread like crazy! We will be going back when in the area again. God Bless this little Restaurant! read more

This place was horrible. The service was practically non-existent; our waitress did not explain that "salad" meant either cottage cheese, applesauce, or iceberg lettuce and therefore my partner was not offered a "green" salad. After the food was served she only came back to our table to drop off the check; not to inquire about our food or to refill drinks, which were emptied soon into the meal. The food was served cold--I got the fish fry, as the rest of the menu was unappealing-it was cold, had a funky taste, and was overall bad. The french fries were cold for both of us, and the obviously canned corn was cold and sitting in water. My partner got the "best in town chicken"--there must not be competition. I tried a bite as well and it was mediocre at best. I will never return and I would discourage everyone I know from dining at this sad excuse for a family restaurant. read more

We finally stopped in after passing this eatery by for 3 years. They did not disappoint!! We had breakfast during the weekday morning. The place was nearly empty when we got there but it filled up quickly. We found out why too. Everything was great! They made the eggs perfect and the scrapple is NOT deep fried, they actually grill it!! That's rare in this hurry up world. Service was exceptional. Our waitress made up very comfortable. The food was good and the wait staff did their job for the most part. We placed our order and at the same time ordered a take out family pack. Our meal was served rather quickly, but when we received our check I asked about our take out and it was forgotten to be placed. We waited for are take out and was offered a refill on our drinks which was no offer. The real problem was with the owner who was screaming at one of her employees it was very unpleasant and took away from our dinning experience. Than when the mailman delivered the mail she went off on him. This was very unprofessional and very rude to the customers. read more
