My brother and I met here for lunch. We both had the Crab Bisque--wow, so good! I also had the Watermelon Feta salad--very refreshing and well as delicious. My brother enjoyed his halushki along with the rest of his lunch (can't remember exactly what). It was quiet when we arrived, and the staff were all pleasant and genuine about how they liked the food themselves. By the time we left, there was a lively amount of people enjoying the food and atmosphere. There are two words that rank this place as one of my favorite places to eat in Johnstown: Chicken. Ball. (I'll get to more of that deliciousness in a bit.) The Phoenix is conveniently located on Broad Street, which makes it easy to find! It's very clean inside and features a large bar! (Big plus!) The staff here is always friendly and more than happy to accommodate! All in all, it's your classic neighborhood bar and grill. The menu has lots of tasty options no matter what you're craving! Fish, Mexican, chicken, turkey, wraps, burgers, sandwiches, meatloaf, wings...it's all on the menu. Now, lets get to the best part: Chicken Ball. Their chicken balls are only served on Mondays and Saturdays. Now I'm sure you're wondering: "What is a chicken ball?". Glad you asked! They take stuffing and chicken and form it into a softball sized ball, and flash fry it. The outside gets nice and crispy while the inside is warm and fluffy. It's served in a bowl on top of a serving of mashed potatoes and topped with gravy. By far my personal favorite thing on the menu. It is quite dense and I struggle to finish it all... but it's worth the struggle. If you find yourself in Johnstown, give this hometown place a try! It's definitely worth a visit! read more

Great homemade food in a nice setting. We were in town for a weekend event and went back to eat dinner twice. The house homemade sweet and sour dressing is amazing. I had the homemade crab soup which was very good as well. And the desserts!! All homemade and look and taste amazing. Highly recommend. read more

Wonderful place to grab a bite to eat with an awesome staff that makes you feel like old friends. Visiting from out of town and had lunch on our way home. Had the Chicken Ball (which is a MUST if you are there when they make it). The cheese stuffed tater tots were awesome as well. The restaurant was very clean. Was looking for something to eat at in Johnstown other than a chain place or Quaker Steak, my usual go-to. Picked this spot off Yelp. The Phoenix is basically your neighborhood bar/restaurant. We were there about 4pm on Saturday afternoon and they were moderately busy, with some families and older couples. I tried the chicken ball looking for something different. As others have said, it's heavy on the stuffing and a bit light on the chicken. It was really dense - I couldn't finish it all. I'd have to say the wings at the Phoenix are low-key some of the best in town. They always seem to be cooked perfectly and the flavors are robust and tasty. But let's face it, the Phoenix is known for their chicken balls! While I don't want to understate the rest of their menu, the chicken balls are definitely worth stopping in for. The bar is spacious and the bartenders know how to mix a great cocktail. The atmosphere is cozy and warm, just the kind of place I enjoy spending my Saturday nights. read more

It's only available on Saturday and Monday so make sure they are serving it before you get there or you'll be verrrry disappointed. Don't bother getting the sample platter. It's small and could serve as a one-person meal. The tuna melt was good as well. Get the fries with brown gravy. It's really good! I read the reviews, but my visit did not bear out the same results. I thought the Yelp photos made the food look amazing, so I gave it a shot. I had the honey ranch wings which were really good. They were awesome actually. I ordered a jacked up burger with fries which was an upgrade, but the fries came out cold and the burger was OK at best; I had to chew threw a few pieces of grizzle. The worst part for me was the service. They weren't rude or anything, just not very attentive. The place was not even a quarter full and it took forever for my food to get to me at the bar, and the bartender would dump the food and jet off somewhere else. Probably won't return. read more

Love the Phoenix! The food can best be described as bar meets homemade. Some of my favorites are (obvi) the chicken ball - which I prefer to thanksgiving (don't tell my fam), homemade Mac n cheese and lobster bisque on Fridays, and my husband likes the Cuban. Prices are great and usually a draft beer special or two! We've happened to be there during Sam Adams giveaways - bonus! Service is great...Dave is the owner and manager...food can be a little slow but that's because his wife is in the back making much of it from scratch! Atmosphere some describe as divey - I describe as historic. One of the first hotels in the area made for miners and steelworkers. Well kept - original tin ceilings and they always decorate for the season. Family friendly. Bonus: They cater and their menu is amazing. I said I'd never eaten there (even though I've lived most of my life in Richland.) Where has this place been hiding? Apparently on Broad Street all these years! We had the Chicken Balls (my new favorite!) and we shared a piece of chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting as well as lemon cake with raspberry icing (also my new favorites!) The place isn't much to look at from the outside, and you might have a hard time actually finding it. The decor is basic and has been around for a while. I was reminded of some of the cantinas we've visited in Spain and Italy. The food is down-home cooking; I strongly recommend their chicken meatball, which is the size of a softball, in an excellent gravy. It's only available on certain days. Our boys chowed down on the Snicker pie for dessert, yum! The service was perfectly fine and the prices quite reasonable. We found this restaurant on Yelp. One of the frequent comments was the cleanliness of the restaurant. Another was the good food. We were not disappointed. We arrived on Saturday just after opening. There were customers already seated, which told us that they have a home-fan base. The server was very friendly and suggested the Saturday special, and after he explained what it was, we decided to split it. It was the chicken ball--easily the size of a softball. It's shredded chicken, mixed with dressing and formed into a ball, then deep fried and served with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy. Tremendous. This was my second time at the Phoenix. First time we went for the chicken balls, this time was just for dinner. Chicken balls were delicious and I should have probably stuck with them, unfortunately it was not a night that they were being served. I got a Rachel wrap with fries, my husband got meatloaf(the special), and my 4 year old got a grilled cheese and fruit. My 4 year old enjoyed her grilled cheese(but really how hard is it to make a grilled cheese). Her fruit was clearly straight out of a can, and less than enjoyable. My wrap was mediocre at best. The fries were good, crispy and well seasoned. The meatloaf. Well, it was less than desirable. My husband described it as 'edible'. Staff was super nice and accommodating. Since it's been 50/50 I guess I'll have to go one more time to see if it's worth it. read more

Amazing Food! Huge quesadilla was amazing!!! Our food was top shelf, and our waitress was very attentive to all of our needs!!!

Stop there based on YELP reviews and their marquee even noted they were #1 in Johnstown. Food was awesome, staff was very nice, and the price was very reasonable. Only problem was for whatever reason our order got lost and had to wait almost 40 minutes for our food while everyone who had come in after us were promptly served. It was until we complained that we got our food and then felt rushed as appetizers and dinner served almost on top of each other. When we did get served the food was very tasty. We got a sampler of couple different flavors of wings, hot & the "sticky". They were good but no bleu cheese was offered or served. The jalapeño poppers were good. I had the Reuben sandwich which was as good as any that I've had from delis anywhere and my date enjoyed her Cobb Salad. Except for a few "I'm sorry", there was no effort to compensate for our wait and troubles. Not even comping us our drinks which we're very reasonably priced. We were told we could call on Monday, 2 days later, and they would see what they could. Would I go back, maybe! The next time Im in Johnstown though, I will definitely try another establishment. read more
