I am new Jersey City resident and was looking for a black owned business that specialized in natural hair. I normally do my own hair, but I was going to a wedding and needed a silk press. Patricia and the whole entire staff was so professional and accommodating. You can tell they have a lot of loyal long-term customers. Based on just sitting in the chair, You just feel at home. I was nervous letting someone cut my hair, but I needed it to be done. Patricia understood that my hair is normally curly and trimmed my hair based on that. This salon is not for me. I looked like I just came out of 1991. I only had one hairstylist did my hair the way I liked it before walking out the salon. It was a nice razor cut. I'm actually terribly sad because I came to this salon with really high hopes it would become my go to place once they told me they could do pony tails. The first person that tried to do my ponytail, didn't even brush it to make it even and didn't know how to do a feed in braid properly. The second person who rewashed my hair and decided to do it over because the first person used half a bottle of hairspray and it was clear my hair was a mess, the second stylist tried her best but she also did not do a good job. My hair doesn't look nice at all, and I have about 8 rubber bands in my hair for a SINGLE ponytail. I wish hair salons were just honest about the styles they can and can't do. I wasted $50 and 4 hours of my time on a single feed in ponytail that I absolutely hate. It was clear that I didn't like the way it was styled but I just took the loss. First and Last time. Next time please just say no, it's not a style you are comfortable doing. read more

If you want a curly cut, do not come here. They did not even know what a wash and go WAS. I had to tell the stylist how to enhance my curl pattern, was put under the dryer with NO PRODUCT (barely a "leave in") and sat in the chair worried if I'd have hair by the end of the cut. I was horrified leaving the salon and the state of my hair. I'll never go back here again, and I don't recommend it for anyone with curly hair. read more

I was scheduled for a silk press and a cut. I must say they stayed true to my appointment time of 11:20. I was serviced by Kuta although I could have sworn I requested Patricia when I scheduled the appointment online. I received a quick wash. My scalp was still itching after the wash. I received a deep conditioning after which my hair was blown dried, straightened, cut and bumped. I requested a silk press and paid for one but at best what I received was a blow out, followed by a quick flat iron press. The staff was pleasant nothing spectacular to report as a first time customer. However, if you advertise silk press and charge for one you should provide those services and that is not what I received. read more

I used to let Patricia do my locs but she just kept getting worse and worse. My locs are hard and are flaking due to some terrible gel she put in my hair. I was going to show her but better than thst I will just never go back. If you have locs don't go here they don't know how to do our hair. I just came from Urban Rose and I'm excited. I went for my usual Saturday afternoon appointment. I always like the way they remember how to treat my hair; water repellent, powder for the top, light heat because it's fine and I don't have chemicals in it, and flowing curls (they always ask what style do I want because I like to show the length now that there is some? Today they were a bit crowded but it was a pleasure to wait. I got to see the regulars and watch them transform from ragamuffins to beauties, that's always fun. All and all it's always the highlight of my weekend. I cannot help but write a second review of Patricia's styling service! As a recap, 2 weeks ago, I went to the salon for a classic sew-in. 5 stars! Today, I sat in Patricia's chair for partial highlights. I've always been very nervous about color..will it be too bright, too red, too orange?! I showed her a photo of Beyonce's highlights, a combo of honey blonde and caramel highlights. After she applied the color, roller set my hair, blow dried and flat ironed, voila! The magic was revealed. The color I'd envisioned for my look was spot on. She'd nailed it! I can't speak highly enough of Patricia and her styling talents! So I was looking for a salon that could do natural hair and I read the reviews of Urban Rose and decided to give it a try. I made an appointment over the phone but when I got there they couldn't find it in the book. No worries I dont think the lady understood me buT it was cool because I was still serviced right away when I came in. A lovely lady name Kuta did my hair. She was very nice and offered me coffee and water. She worked with my hair very well. Even complimented that I had nice hair which made me feel good because a lot of salons aren't very friendly to course hair texture. My blowout was very nice. I needed a trim and she did it perfectly! My daughter was visiting for the summer and was in need of a new hair style for her first trip to Canada & Caribana. Living in West New York it's hard to find a salon that does African-American hair and a sew. My daughter had a specific hair style she wanted and of course Dad wants to make it happen. I searched Google and found a few shops. What made this business stand out was the fact urban was in their business name. Of course I'm always a skeptic when trying out new places and again wanted my baby to be happy. I couldn't have been more happy and satisfied with the end result. My daughter is extremely happy with her hair and cannot keep her hand out of it. I never plan ahead more than 24 hours in advance for an appointment and at other salons you know how risky that is and will likely get a response of "sorry next time!" or "all booked!" But here at urban rose I called about an hour before they opened on Saturday, told them my hair type ( African american hair 4C (can help with ALL hair types and textures). My appointment was set with Patrica. She treated me so well with a deep conditioner and trim. Another stylist combed my hair out after my wash, at first using a comb that was a bit too rough on my tender head, tangled and tight curls, I asked if she had a wider toothed comb and she changed it right away! She was incredibly nice about it and understood immediately what I was looking for, so don't be afraid to speak up and specify what grooming works best for your hair! I live in the heights so finding a salon that can do black hair, well and at a decent price similar to what you would find in Harlem, was a godsend! I found myself in NJC and totally unable to wakeup from a horrible hair nightmare; If you read my prior reviews, u will understand how serious I am about my hair and who touches it. Seriously, I was in the middle of a two week trip and knew I looked like a total mess despite having my extensions redone merely 3 weeks prior. Not enough glue in the beauty supply to fix my issue so I turned once again to yelp to help me find someone who might be able to at best, transform my problem from terrible to just sorta' bad. Worse yet, I didn't have a car so location was limiting factor. Found a salon that seemed to offer just what I was looking for less than two miles away! Read multiple yelp reviews prior to my arrival. Was still unsure and somewhat puzzled how to interpret the many reviews that consistently described the people at this salon as "super nice", and "really nice" etc. Seemed like an exaggeration. Couldn't imagine how much "nice"-r they could be than other places. Isn't everyone "nice" when you are potentially going to come in and spend a couple of hundred dollars??!! Boy was I shocked when I went in for my appointment. "Nice" as used in prior reviews was extreme understatement. I felt like the Queen of NY for a day. They welcomed me in like an old friend the minute I walked thru the door. Then begin the service and hospitality- " Was I hungry or thirsty" or "hot or cold?" And throughout my appointment they continually queried, "whether I was okay and if I needed anything" and whether "I was okay or were they pulling my hair even slightly?" They even did things like looking after my handbag and consistently preventing me from even lifting a finger any time I attempted to do so. I have never experienced such concern for my comfort and happiness from any beautician, service provider, friend or even significant other. Without even a trace of phoniness, these beauty goddesses made my several hour appointment feel like a pampering session. Now add to this , the extreme quality of their work. They were familiar with all different extension methods and services. They even knew extension methods i had never heard of. I also couldn't help but notice that they were ok working on all hair types too-since I saw several different nationalities of women all getting their hair done. In a nutshell, the quality of the work was top notch and prices were 1/2 to 1/3 of what I would have paid on the West Coast. Natasha was the stylist that hooked up my hair; she proved to be more than just a nice person and a pretty face, she was an absolute pro of a weaver!!. Braids and hair were tight and flat and she managed to work with the mess I had without even needing one additional piece of additional hair. I was blown away by everything I encountered at this off the beaten path salon. Whenever I am in NYC or NJC, i will make sure to schedule a day out to come to redo my hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
