The word is quaint. Yes, it's a cliche, but it's accurate. The staff at the front desk is super helpful, I believe we were helped by someone named Pluto, who was very patient with us . . . We had two little kids that were obsessed with the candy bowls, and my wife's elderly (we are of Indian origin) parents who . . . let's just say, they had a lot of interesting questions. The rooms were really nice...very clean and spacious. This place accommodates dogs. Let me rephrase, they welcome dogs. They had a cot for each of our dogs to sleep in, treats, poop bags, and a coupon for the neighborhood pet shop. I think it says a lot about a place when they welcome dogs with such open arms. Outlook Inn is also situated near the downtown area and is walking distance from some nice shops and restaurants. This doesn't count towards this rating but Orcas island was beautiful. I highly recommend you visit and stay at Outlook Inn, especially if you have a dog. read more

We enjoyed a little family getaway here! They've got pet-friendly rooms so it was perfect for us. Upon arrival, they had a little corner set up for our dog...dog bed, towels, and a treat bag! It was so cute!! It was an easy check in, friendly staff. The bay view suits are a pretty good size and the bed was comfy! The little kitchenette was handy to have, and was stocked with the basics. Great views and so close to everything. There are many stores and restaurants close by that are easy to walk to. The only little complaint we had was that the shower water could've been hotter. But other than that, it was an amazing stay! We will definitely be coming back to stay here!! read more

I had a really uncomfortable experience with the front desk manager, kayty. She came across as rude, dismissive, and honestly a bit hostile. At one point she raised her voice, which felt completely inappropriate. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like I was bothering her just by asking basic questions. Not the level of professionalism or hospitality you'd expect, especially from a manager. I am surprised that this is the manager of a hotel. read more

Not that impressed. The pictures are a bit miss leading of the rooms. Our room is very musty no real view of anything but our parking spot. We have a standard king. No refrigerator, or microwave. There is only one chair in the room. Kind of annoying for a couple. Also there are no towel bars anywhere to hang a wash cloth or a towel. Seems like a place that charges almost $200 a night would have some of those basic things. read more

Wanted a local getaway and Orcas was the chosen destination as it felt far away but was only a short drive and ferry ride from Seattle. We wanted to be in a location where we could be secluded but also walk to get food and thus we booked a stay at the Outlook Inn, specifically one of their Water's Edge rooms. The rooms themselves were very nice and had great views since it was right over the water. Even though we were there when it was rather smoky from the surrounding wildfires, we still had managed to enjoy some coffee out on our deck in the mornings which was amazing. Because of COVID we actually were emailed check in instructions where we could go straight and access our room with a lockbox. They also didn't do any cleaning services but instead provided a phone number we could text for anything we needed and they would meet us outside to hand it over. As guests at the Outlook Inn you also have access to their grassy outdoor area located right next to the Water's Edge rooms as well as access to their garden area that housed a beautiful building with a pond and some outdoor seating. I highly recommend the Outlook Inn and if you can swing it, the Water's Edge rooms. We also tried their restaurant, the New Leaf Cafe and it was so yummy I was tempted to lick my plate clean... but that's for another review. :) read more

We have to give this 3 stars. The staff was friendly and the place was clean and in a good location. However, it was too expensive for what it was. There are no amenities at the inn, other than the cafe, which was closed two of the three days we were there. The office was also closed much of our stay. Our room was in an old motel type building- no elevator, outdoor entries, and a view of the parking lot. The room had been updated, but the whole place- paint, carpets, etc.- was a bit run down. The windows didn't work, which we discovered when we arrived and had to air out the room because the smell of bleach was so strong. There was a large biking tour group of young people staying there, and it seemed like the right kind of place for them, rather than anything like a luxury resort. read more

I booked this room on Expedia. It was somehow overlooked by me at the time of booking that it was a shared bathroom. what was even more surprising is that the shower is separate from the toilet and the sink. I guess that makes sense for purposes of sharing with possibly four or five other rooms but definitely not ideal. That said I found the bathrooms extremely clean with new fixtures. The shower could have benefited by a hair dryer and maybe somewhere to hang things closer to the shower, or a little bit more space than the small bench inside provided. There is plenty of hot water, liquid soap shampoo and conditioner provided. As it turned out sharing was not an issue, I had the entire hallway to myself. I don't know what it would be like if there was lower or No vacancy. I found the room quaint, maybe outdated. The description of the room says garden view but it was more like a parking lot view, not too terrible and you can keep an eye on your vehicle. It does say that there's a desk but in order to sit at the small vintage secretary desk you would have to drag over the ottoman or the large stuffed chair which is probably not going to happen. The sink leaked. The dripping kept me awake and I got up and had to position a glass to try and catch the drips hoping it will quiet it down a little bit. When I took a peek under the sink it was obvious that this was not a new problem. The stairway just as one leaves the lobby and heads up the stairs to the room, had a strange odor. I would describe it as a combination of beef stew and some kind of cleaning solution. It was pretty consistent from the time I arrived until check out. I also noticed strong fragrance of essential oil when I walked in the lobby. Much more pleasant than some kind of synthetic junk that other places use but it was a little overpowering for anyone who's sensitive to fragrances. The front desk personnel was very friendly and helpful. Definitely give them an A+. read more

Oh lovely and cozy. The administrative part is like a little house. They have a little gift shop where you can find their natural brand used in every room. You can also get hoodies in case it's windy outside as we did ;) Restaurant has different hours. It has tall windows so you can appreciate the view. Light strings make it a perfect spot for summer tables outside :D We had breakfast here. Croque Madam was delicious. They have discount for mimosas (grapefruit, orange, cranberry). Waffles come with berries and whipped cream :) I like all white rooms :) they fell cozy. I liked the smell of their products but I felt that shampoo didn't wash well. Probably has no bubbling thingy that gets this but it's just the feeling :S Lotion aroma was gorgeous. I didn't like shower because water temperature would change radically. Probably because connection was shared with other rooms. This place really made our stay on Orcas Island memorable. The Lovely view. The Comfortable room. It was quiet, and beautiful. Maybe not all rooms have this, but our room had a fireplace and small balcony. We happened to be here in October, so the night and early mornings were chilly. Having that fireplace made it all the sweeter. The location is ideal: you can walk to the market in town or to many of the restaurants. Also, the food at the restaurant was superb. Really I can't think of anything I don't like about this hotel. It seemed the ideal location to have a wedding, or anniversary party, or any event. read more

I stayed in the Bay View Suite Room 53. The room itself was fantastic. The bathtub in the bathroom was the best part of the room. The gas fireplace was difficult to work and it wouldn't start a few times, but other than that it was great. There are some rooms in the hotel that are pet friendly so we did hear dogs barking a few times but since we went in the off-season it wasn't too busy. As far as price goes, I did feel like the amenities did not match the price. I think in the off-season they should lower their prices or have specials considering most things aren't open on the island. It was a great place to social distance though and I felt safe entire time. Overall I am happy I went but probably won't be back for a long time. read more

I have stayed at The Outlook Inn for over 25 years. Over that time the building has changed hands several times and been remodeled several times. The location is superb, the rooms are clean, the restaurant is good. The price is high but I appreciate they need to keep reinvesting in this old property to keep it maintained. The grounds are lovely. So why one star? The last few times I have stayed here, the staff has been indifferent at best, some almost hostile. I was scheduled to stay here a few weeks ago but got covid and had to cancel. I come up for business and my other accommodations in the San Junas were super helpful and accommodating, they all allowed me to reschedule and were very understanding and friendly. Not so The Outlook Inn. They wanted a picture of my PCR test (who takes a picture of their PCR test?!) and without that would not let me reschedule. They were pretty rude about it as well. I should note the room was prepaid. I regularly visit the islands because I have a business need to and they acted like I cancelled a frivolous vacation on a whim. We stayed 2 nights in a bay view room. I don't think the pictures do it justice, the room was much nicer and cozier than we were expecting and the view was amazing! Not much in the town was open, but we went on some amazing hikes and enjoyed the scenery. It was very helpful having plates and utensils in the room to eat takeout by the fire. We had a great time, check in was easy, staff checked in by text to see if we needed anything, and we had a great, restful, relaxing stay and would love to come back! read more

It was peaceful and gorgeous at night, and we felt happy and rested in the cozy bed. The breakfast at Leaf was a delicious daily treat that kept us humming for a good portion of the day. We were there for the Orcas Island Film Festival, the location was perfect, we were able to cruise around on foot to all of our destinations from Outlook. Serenity now! (but not in the Seinfeldian sense). The Outlook Inn was everything advertised, namely kind, professional service, pride in care, and a magical setting. I admit I was leery of staying somewhere with shared bathrooms, both because of the lack of privacy and concerns about cleanliness. Honestly, the bathrooms were cleaner than many hotels where you have a private one, and the "sharing" was not a problem as there were so many single-stall bathrooms and shower stalls to choose from, including one just right outside our room, #14. Our room as an old dresser, nightstand, and a clean and functional sink/vanity with mirrors, artwork and large picture windows. Despite the coziness of the room there was plenty of nooks and crannies to store our stuff in. This is a strange observation, but our room had this old house smell that reminded me of visiting my grandmother as a little kid. It took me back to those long dormant memories and rekindled them and brought them back to life like tuning the keys on one of my grandmother's baby grand pianos. There was no flat screen TV in the room to distract us, only the sound of the floors creaking and my and honeybunny's voices as we read aloud to each other. The bed was so comfortable and the comforter so fluffy that in the morning when I awoke to the sound of the wind outside howling and the old wood creaking as the wind buffeted the century-old timbers, I felt a kind of peace that only a refuge of this kind could provision. I want to like it here. Beautiful hotel. Cute rooms. The housekeeping keeps me from liking it. I went to take a shower at 9pm, pubic hair on the drain in the shared bathroom. Hair on the shower walls. I got into bed and my pillow smelled. I got rid of my pillow and realized the sheets had the "sour milk" smell as well. In the morning I got up and put the pillow back in place and I saw a blood stain. The fitted sheet had a tear. I told the front desk about the sheets. We come back in the afternoon. I see that instead of blood stains there is a new gray stain. A different tear on the sheet. A hair that wasn't mine or my husbands on the pillow. The sour smell, is part of the pillow not just the pillow case. The candy on the pillows was there for our second night only. Oh... and no vacuuming on the second day. read more

We got married at The Outlook Inn this last August (2022). When I first booked this venue in 2021, the Inn was under different ownership and we were not informed about the sale until a few months later. There seemed to be a lot of turnover and it was hard to pin down who I was supposed to communicate with leading up to my wedding. I would rate our experience higher, but there was a lot of miscommunication about the booking of our rooms (I have pages of emails about this. My husband and I stayed in one of their Water's Edge suites, my sister and her partner were in another Water's Edge suite, my MIL was in another one of the Water's Edge suites, and most of our guests stayed in the other Inn rooms for the weekend as well), and the Inn made a several thousand dollar mistake when it came to making final payments right before our wedding. The thing that bummed me out the most was that I was told during my wedding dinner that they would have someone take my leftovers to our room, but that never happened. I paid an extra $1000 for a roast pig because I'm Filipino and it was important to my family to have one, on top of paying for a bar package and a dinner package per guest (we had around 65 people at our wedding and the bar and dinner package came out to about $165 per head prior to taxes and gratuity, not including the pig roast). I went back to the front desk the next morning and was told all of the leftover food was tossed out and they did not have anything to give to me. Outside of the miscommunication, the charge mistake, and the sadness I felt over all of the leftover food being tossed out, the venue itself was beautiful. The Water's Edge suites are stunning. People were still cautious about traveling because of COVID, so we were thankful to have the amount of guests that we did have attend. The catering staff was wonderful and my guests were impressed with the bartender. And I LOVED all of our other vendors. My husband and I were adamant that we wanted to be married on Orcas Island and we were happy to find a venue where we could make that happen. Overall, considering that there are very few wedding venues on Orcas, The Outlook Inn was a pretty good choice. I know $20,000+ might not be a lot for some people when it comes to spending money on a venue and catering for a wedding, but for me, for that amount of money, I was hoping for a stellar experience. As soon as the Water's Edge rooms were built, I dreamed of staying here. We made the trip recently and it definitely did not disappoint! The room is sleek and clean with heated floors in the bathrooms. We enjoyed sitting on the deck with privacy, the kitchenette, fireplace, and comfortable bedding. We also liked the smart TV's and Nespresso machine in suite. I thought we had booked the rooms with the soaking tubs, but I guess they only have tubs in the "deluxe suites" so make sure you read the fine print when booking. I thought all rooms had tubs. This place is perfect for staying right in town. We usually stay outside of town and have been coming to the island for decades, so it was a treat to be within walking distance to all of our favorite shops and restaurants and to be able to come back to the room to relax at whim. Waking up to the view of the island and bird watching in the morning was so peaceful. A definite highlight for downtime. You cannot beat walking right across the street to the New Leaf Cafe for a fabulous breakfast. Get the brioche toast, it is fantastic. We liked the mobile check-in and text message service from the front desk. We did ask for our trash to be picked up from our room, only to be told we must leave it outside and we had already left our room for the day. So make note that they are still doing door-service only in rooms. We hope to be back for another luxurious stay! read more

I found this place on Booking.com and thought the location looked good for what I'd be wanting to do on Orcas Island which was wandering aimlessly through Eastsound and drinking coffee, maybe some geocaching, a hike or two and shopping. We got off the ferry around 1 and check in wasn't until 3. They allowed us to check in early and placed us in the east wing. I had a standard queen room and by the name "standard", I wasn't expecting anything too wonderful but opening the door, I was met with a bright airy spot with a large window seat, a white bed dressed kinda shabby chic-ish and a clean white bathroom with a standing shower. The bath products seemed local/upscale-ish. There was a Keurig with tea, coffee and cocoa but you have to get paper travel cups from the lobby, which we did twice, and interacted with friendly staff. The wifi was worthless, but I suppose most people aren't here to be on the grid. There was no HBO and we didn't turn on the tv once. The mini fridge was welcome but the noise from it was a bit distracting in my personal opinion being 5 feet from the bed. If we didn't have food to keep cold (leftovers from Mijitas) I would suggest unplugging it. I did, however, love the fan in the closet, not because it was hot but because white noise is welcome when sleeping in a new place. That was a surprise perk. Minus a full star for shower wonkiness. The shower temperature was not consistent. It'd go hotter, then spray cold water. We only stayed one night but yeah, it was winter and cold water even for 2 seconds was unwelcome, though comical in retrospect. We also asked for a late checkout (the place seemed empty) and our request was compromised. An hour late for free or we could add 4 hours for $50, half the price of the room. We decided against that. Half the room rate should be half the day. No big deal. The main detraction was the shower temperature. Comfy bed, updated cute room. Loved the window seat. read more

Lovely little get away, beautiful accommodation, our view was fabulous. What wasn't so fabulous were the people in room #53 right next to us. It's awful when you're awoken suddenly at 12:30 am because someone has a pet elephant, hyena and talking parrot in their room. I mean what else could it possibly be that would cause the bed and the floor vibrate, loud voices and ear piercing laughter. I know that human beings would never be so rude as to come into their room at almost 1 o'clock in the morning and cause such a racket for over a hour. I even banged on the wall at one point which must have scared the animals for maybe 10 minutes but then the ruckus continued on. Only 4 stars because it wasn't clear how much uphill and stairs we would encounter to get to our room 42, and I did call and ask as I am here with Dad who has trouble with both. Pros: 1) THE VIEW. 2) Loved that it is family owned. 3) The beds are pretty comfy. 3) The restaurant attached (New Leaf Cafe) is AMAZING. 4) Towel warmers in the bathroom. 5) Location. You can walk around the Eastsound easily. I have to say the garden areas were nice and had an almost Japanese flair to them. The reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars is because: 1) There was a giant bird poop running down the window of our Water View Suite. I know you can't control the birds but I could tell it had been there for awhile and it really disrupted the view, which is why we paid for the room. It would have been easy for housecleaning to clean since it was the window off the balcony. 2) Water pressure of the shower was not good and was so weak after about a minute that it was more dripping than pouring and it was difficult to wash my hair. For the price it was good minus the two items above. We will probably stay here again on our next trip to Orcas! read more

It's quaint in an not top notch way. The "waterfront" room, is on second floor and does have a window with grids on it looking over parking lot street and then a view of waterfront. It has a fridge, no microwave. It's roomy has a bay window looking over the bar. Service was fine but not super accommodating. The island has an overall laid back approach. You won't be waited on. They do have a nice Resturant. Great food, fair service, everyone that works in hotel and Resturant wears yoga pants and tee shirts. (Strange, but not really if you walk around town) The town is liberal, hippie-ville. Lots of "gardners", they all know each other. They are friendly enough. You are there to pay and pay you will. We had quite a lot of belongings along with a baby stroller and the staff offered no assistance taking things to our room up multiple flights of stairs. My boyfriend and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary and I'm glad I picked it! We stayed in one of the Bay View Suites, and there was simply nothing wrong with our stay. Every suite has a breathtaking view of the ocean and I loved falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing on the nearby beach. With a large two person jetted tub, a small kitchenette, a glorious king sized bed, a sunken living room and a fireplace it was really hard for us to leave the Inn and go back to Seattle. The staff is small, which in my opinion almost always equals better. The side room off the foyer offers free DVD's, books, and games for guest which was a nice bonus, so leave all that stuff at home! The hotel had everything we wanted and more! While I love to stay at different properties every time I travel, I'll be making an exception to stop back at the Outlook Inn when I return to Orcas. They do have 2 other buildings, but I did not look at those and as such am not sure how they are, but the suite was amazing! read more

We planned for two nights but ended up staying three! My partner and I went to Orcas Island on a spontaneous trip during the off-season in April. The Inn was having a special where if you booked multiple nights, you got Sunday half off. We planned for Saturday and Sunday night, but couldn't bring ourselves to leave on Monday and booked the room for one last night. We stayed on the top floor in one of the Luxury Bay Suites. The room was spacious but cozy (thanks to the radiant floor heating-which at times did get a little too cozy). The views of the water were breathtaking, and the large windows provided us with the best sight to wake up to. There was also a lovely small balcony, perfect for nigh time cuddling while watching the moonlit bay. The room itself is very nice. There is a sunken living room with fireplace and a raised sleeping area. The bed was very comfortable. Next to the bed was a coffeemaker, which I really appreciated because without coffee it is literally impossible to get my partner out of bed, though it was a little disappointing that the only choice in the room was decaf. Near the sleeping area, was a convenient kitchenette with sink, microwave and large mini fridge (I know oxymoronic but it is the best way to describe it). There was glasses, mugs and dish ware provided in the cupboard, which we really appreciated. It showed a very thoughtful level of care. Though, they could've just pushed the hotel restaurant on us, they instead allowed us to choose what we would prefer to do (i.e. store and heat our own food if we wished), while giving us drink coupons to the restaurant (which I will describe in a bit). The bathroom was amazing, with both a shower and a oversized jetted tub. The bathroom, as well as the living room and the sleeping area, had a telephone which was great for us because there were more than a few times when we got confused about one thing or another and had to call to ask the front desk. The staff was always hospitable, courteous and helpful, no matter how obvious the answers to our questions might have seemed. The hotel restaurant, New Leaf Cafe, was amazing! We didn't really end up using the fridge that much once we figured out the deliciousness that awaited us downstairs. My only regret is that we didn't go there on our first day. The food is all fresh, seems to be pretty local and really well-prepared. Try the truffle fries, and anything on the breakfast menu. As far as the cocktails go, I really recommend the strawberry sunrise with breakfast or brunch. To top it all off, the inn is a close walk to the island grocery store and all the other main shops and restaurants on Main Street. It also just right across the street from the water. Perfect location! All in all, we had a lovely time. Everyone treated us with respect and warmth, and as an interracial queer couple, I always worry at least a little about travel, but we encountered no problems. Our relationship was treated like a valid relationship, not a spectacle, an abomination or something to act super creepily approving of to get ally points or prove how progressive one's establishment is. Nope, we were just treated like any other guests that happened to be a couple on a romantic getaway. In fact, we were treated more decently than we ever are in Seattle. That was the nicest surprise. While it's right there on Main Street in Eastsound, the Outlook Inn remains something of a hidden treasure when it comes to lodging on Orcas. With prices below $100 a night for rooms in the historic main building (many with views out to Eastsound), it's hard to go wrong. I've stayed here (in the main historic inn) three times, and have always found the rooms clean and inviting and the staff friendly. Since it's in Eastsound, you're right smack dab in the middle of the island, with easy access to both the west and east sides. And if you just want to stay in town, you can walk everywhere! If you're biking, they have a locking shed out back for storage. The only drawback to the cheaper rooms is that the bathrooms and showers are out in the hallway - but there are a lot of them and I've never had an issue with finding an open one.
