I normally go to Car Toys in Portland for car stereo work because they've always been consistent and fair with pricing. But this time I decided to try something new and gave Outrageous Audio a chance after seeing their big storefront on SE 82nd -- especially the huge sign that says "INSTALLATION IS FREE." Unfortunately, my experience turned into something very different from what was advertised. What Happened I walked in already knowing the stereo unit I wanted, but they didn't carry that model. They did, however, offer an alternative unit on sale (from around $549 to $300), and a backup camera for about $125. No problem there -- the pricing seemed fair so far. The issue came when we discussed installation. I was told the job would take about two hours. Totally reasonable for a stereo + backup camera on a full-size truck with plenty of space. But then the labor estimate came out: Roughly $400 for installation. That works out to over $200 per hour. For context, most reputable shops in Portland charge between $75-$150/hr, and Car Toys is usually in that range as well. Even dealerships don't usually hit $200/hr for basic stereo installs. So being charged that much -- under a building-sized banner claiming "free installation" -- felt misleading at best, and at worst, a bait-and-switch tactic. Why This Matters I can afford to pay for the install, but that isn't the point. Customers deserve honest, transparent pricing. Advertising free installation and then charging over $200/hr is not reasonable by any industry standard. If "free installation" only applies to certain units, or only the most basic installs, that should be clearly stated -- not discovered when the bill arrives. Would I Go Back? No. This experience was enough for me. If you want: predictable pricing clear communication industry-standard labor rates and no surprises ...you're far better off going to Car Toys or another reputable installer in the area. Final Thoughts Outrageous Audio might offer decent products, but the installation pricing and lack of transparency were major red flags. I gave them a fair chance, but based on what I experienced, I cannot recommend them and won't be returning. read more

I bought a XS Power battery from these guys. It died they charged it. Now that I am ready to do the big 3 I am looking for the battery terminals that go to that battery. Were very helpful in getting a stereo installed same-day for a car I bought. I came in towards the end of the afternoon and still got the unit installed before the end of the day. There were a couple of misunderstandings on my part regarding the camera in the front and some features of the head unit, and I could have spent more time discussing them but was in a rush and didn't notice until much later (not their fault!) They also didn't remember to plug in a component but I called and they talked me through the fix which was SUPER simple. All told I still give them 5 stars for their customer service and ability to get me set up in the matter of a few hours. Maybe try to make it in before 3pm though if you want things done same-day! Been here a few times and it's always been a good experience. Last time I went there I took my Ram in to get a backup camera taking advantage of a sale they had. One of the crew accidentally broke a small part of my dash surround while putting it back together and they offered to buy me one and replace it for free. It took about a week to get the part and replace it but I really appreciate that they took responsibility and made things right. You know the type you find in dem joints, the type that drills holes through your gas tank, wiring wrapped around the steering wheel, stuff that used ta work that isn't working when you get the jalopy back again. I got on the ol' ameche, called my man Doug and told him I wanted a new stereo. He says, be here at this time and this day and I'll fix you up. I drives four hours each way on this day. I gets there, he say Imma put this Alpine in your rig and you'll love it. Tells me the price, I'm there an hour, parts with some cabbage an' I'm "on the road again". The most unprofessional customer service I've ever experienced. I bought a subwoofer in January with an amp the supplies half the power the sub is rated for and there is no bass going thru the sub. I was talked out of buying the sub and amp that i originally wanted to buy and told that the sub and amp that they suggested was better.
