My partner and I stumbled upon Ovenbird Bakery when driving through Independence, Oregon this summer. The charming bakery is located on the main strip downtown, and is loaded with character! There was a couple playing chess on one of the bistro tables out front, and two elderly gentlemen having a lively conversation about local politics. This is just my scene! We ordered a marionberry danish and a sugar cookie, both of which were fresh, delicious and well-priced. The staff were super friendly and offered us a sample of freshly-baked dog treats for our pug Penelope, who we had in tow. Top five fave, no doubt! Katie (the baker extraordinaire) can make pretty much any kind of scone, and they're AMAZING! This is my go-to when I need lunch for a staff meeting, baked goods for a special event, and/or just a yummy snack. Here's what we've had AND highly recommend: Chocolate cupcakes Lemon cupcakes ANY deli sandwich on their made-fresh-daily focaccia bread. (you're welcome) Scones (All flavors, but my favorites are the hazelnut chocolate chip & the maple & the lemon flavors) Hubby loves all the danishes (esp. the berry ones) This place is a little gem in town that shouldn't be missed. One of the first things I had from Ovenbird was a peanut butter cookie that so reminded me of my Mom's that I literally teared up. I sent an email and the baker responded that they used the recipe from Betty Crocker's The Cooky Book - which was exactly what my Mom used. Their pastries are superb, and not too sweet. Flaky croissants, Danish's with ripe local fruit, cinnamon rolls with and without raisins (I'm team raisin). Their quiche is delicious - some have a potato crust. Their sandwiches are generous and every soup I've tried is absolutely more-ish. The staff is friendly, kind, and involved in their community. They have a fund, kept up by them and other downtown businesses, that assures the UPS driver never pays for his lunch (I love this so much.). Since Nov. 1, they're offering 1/2 sandwich + soup lunch free to those who receive SNAP benefits. (Anyone can donate $$ to keep that going) Stop by and support this awesome local business! read more

Chanced upon this bakery when looking for a meeting place midway between two cities and what is wonderful find it was. They don't have a lot on for beverages, it is not a coffeehouse masquerading as a bakery, but a legit full-service bakery. From the case by the piece they offer a variety of quiche each day along with some amazing sweet treats. I was so excited to see a bakery making cinnamon rolls without raisins and cream cheese frosting that I had to make a trip back on the weekend. It is a rustic, small town bakery with a few tables in and out to enjoy a treat, or lunch (they offer soup and sandwiches) with the most decadent aroma of baking bread. I hadn't been to this bakery for a while, and I was in the mood for a morning treat. I was walking around Independence, and decided to try this place again. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. The service was friendly as well. I selected an almond bearclaw and a pain au chocolate to go. Both were excellent. The pain au chocolate was nice and flaky, with no sogginess. The pastry and the chocolate both had great, rich flavor. The bearclaw was full of almond-y creaminess, and was delightful. Both were a nice size, not too expensive, and fresh. They have bread, coffee, and sandwiches also, and I will be trying more of their offerings, that's for sure. I am really glad I remembered this gem of a bakery! They made my morning! read more

oven bird is my favorite spot in the area. every flavor of the coffee cake has been so delicious, i could say the same for the quiche. fluffy and full of 'toppings'. their drip coffee is also good and i am picky with my coffee!! the bread is always so good, though i get sad I cant finish a loaf quick enough! i will always support this bakery as it's one of the best bakeries i've been to. read more

I just popped in here for a few baked goods to go while out and about. We saved them for the next morning. It was close to 2 PM (they close at 2:30 PM) so I bought one cinnamon roll (the last one) and a raspberry baked good, I'm not sure what you call it. They were very good and I'm eager to get back here and try a few more things. It's a small place with a couple of tables and some outside if we ever get an actual spring that doesn't include snow. I've heard good things about Ovenbird, finally got a chance to stop by. We were not disappointed. We sampled the cupcake with fresh fruit on top for $2, the salami pepper jack,croissant, and peach, danish, both $4. All were very good. Our favorite was the peach danish! The soup that day was shrimp clam chowder. We didn't try it, but I would've liked to so we will need to make a return visit for lunch soon. High praise given to Ovenbird!!! read more

My son wanted one thing for his birthday - a cherry pie. We are gluten free, so finding that was already going to be a struggle without driving to Portland, but the staff here made us a beautiful cherry pie, even though they don't even offer cherry pies on their menu. Cute bakery with amazing coffee cake and pastry opens. Every morning we saw them making bread from scratch but never had the opportunity to try their sandwiches. The lady at the checkout was super sweet and friendly. She answered questions we had and definitely gave off the friendly vibe that is one of the best parts of the small town vibe. I had low expectations for their drip coffee but it was actually also super good and we went back three times the week we were in town. Would highly recommend stopping here! read more

This place is an amazing find. The quiches are incredible. Thick and fluffy and lots of variety. Crust is so flaky. It's like eating air With butter! and the pastries are incredibly delicious. They have very good sandwiches if you like whatever options they decide to put on them. Theoretically, you get to chose, but prepare to be surprised. Either the cashier doesn't really pay attention to what you order of the person making the sandwich doesn't pay attention to the order. Last year I ordered a 2-tier rainbow cake for a rainbow cake and received a 1-tier Easter cake instead. They tried to insist it was my fault. I didn't think saying 2-tier rainbow cake meant Easter cake but okay. This year I liked the baker so I tried to go back giving them benefit of the doubt. I gave them pictures this time as well. I ordered a 2-tier lego cake, white with strawberry middle. ....I received a regular round white cake with lego candy on it, lemon flavored. It looks absolutely NOTHING like the photos I sent. They also way overcharged for this. People at the party asked if I had made it and were shocked an actual bakery made this. It looks very plain. I am so upset as this happened again when I tried to be nice to give them the benefit. I texted the woman saying I was upset that the cake was messed up again, and she replied she didn't want me as a customer again. Don't worry hun. I won't be coming back. Your Yelp reviews are horrible and you never listen to your customers. You overcharge for your cakes. I 10000000% would recommend you order from somewhere else. My boss recommended (as in INSISTED I absolutely must go!) to Ovenbird. Wow, I'm so glad I did! I'm a sucker for anything sweet and they had the most beautiful pastries I've ever seen. Also, can I just say that I'm not use to non-Portland prices, I couldn't believe how little it cost for a GIANT cherry-cream cheese danish! I also bought 2 little lemon cookies to go for later tonight. The guy working there was friendly and I had mentioned I wasn't from here, but that I was told to try them out. He gave great recommendations of the area, and even mentioned that Saturdays are the best day to go because thats when they have all their good stuff out. Up early in Independence is a little rough if you're looking for a cup of coffee and pastry! Stumbled upon Ovenbird Bakery while walking through town before 7am. Friendly staff, delicious smells, and great pastries and quiche. Our favorite were the almond croissant - almond paste all the way through the entire croissant, and the feta, tomato, pepperoncini quiche. Delicious! Wishing we found this gem yesterday when we arrived as they are only open M-S 6:30a-2:30p. Looking forward to our next visit! read more
